Questions/Advice How do I try to convince my parents to get me an ADHD diagnosis?

For context, I'm 18M and going into my second year of university. Growing up I was never suspected to have ADHD since I always was the top of my class, and eventually made it to a great university a year earlier than my classmates. Even in university I consistently finish in the top quarter of my year group after exams. I'm studying a degree I love and I can focus on university work no problem.

But one of my housemates this year has ADHD, and I see myself in him in a lot more ways than I'd be comfortable with. I'm Incredibly disorganised, and constantly late to everything. I'm constantly fidgeting and lose concentration really easily. I sometimes forget about what I'm talking about in the middle of a conversation and my emotions are also really volatile amongst other things that we have in common. I also find it incredibly hard to maintain romantic relationships or friendships. My housemates urged me to get a diagnosis but I don't have the money for it so the only way for me to get diagnosed is through my parent's funding or trying to find a way through the university which also requires money.

Is there any way to convince my parents to get me checked? My parents are Asian but they're not that traditional. Some things still linger though such as mental health and mental illness being a taboo topic. Especially since one of my little cousins has severe AutDHD and another has an IQ deficiency. I think my parents are afraid that their firstborn son also has a mental issue since I'm their pride and joy, and the rest of the family also see me as a good example, since I made it to a good university and I'm studying a respected degree. I really want a diagnosis though, despite seeming like I'm holding it together on the outside I'm really struggling.

Questions/Advice Can ADHD be ruled out by a blood test?

I’m confused about something and would really appreciate some advice.

I strongly suspected that I might have ADHD, so I went to a regular doctor. He ordered some laboratory tests, including a blood test. However, he didn’t really ask me any questions about my symptoms, childhood history, attention problems, or how these issues affect my daily life.

After looking at the test results, he told me that I only have fear/anxiety and that I don’t have ADHD.

This confused me because, as far as I understand, ADHD cannot be diagnosed or ruled out through a blood test.

Can a blood test actually determine whether someone has ADHD? If a doctor ruled out ADHD mainly based on laboratory/blood tests without doing a proper ADHD assessment, should I consider getting a second opinion from a psychiatrist or another professional who specializes in ADHD?

I’d also appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through an ADHD assessment. What was the proper diagnostic process like for you?

Seeking Empathy feeling really deep down from time to time?

39 yo, self-diagnosed (since march). I always struggled with handling a lot of work -although wanting to do the best whenever possible. For the last couple of weeks, my workload has been immense. I still feel tired and stressed about it. For a couple of times now, I feel deeply down, as if there is no joy in life. My therapist (of 2.5 years) told me this is normal (we mostly focus on my life and childhood, rather than adhd itself). Is this dangerous for someone with ADHD? Should I start medication? Is this happening because of the stress accumulated over the last few weeks? or because deep down I know I'll never be able to keep up with the pace my career requires?

A new firm to assist people who have ADHD with bills/financial matters

One of the things that gets out of control occasionally for me is bills. I do okay for a while but every now and then I get off track with my bills. Something is forgotten and then I have Kate fees, shut off notices, etc ...

The suggested company would be something that people with ADHD could sign up with and they would schedule a call/web meeting/in person meeting to go over your monthly bills, make sure you paid everything, work with you to get everything paid on time.

Unless something like this already exists in which case what's the name of the company? Do you have a website or phone number for them?

Seeking Empathy Pharmacy Issue - PISSED OFF!

I have been getting my Adderall from a grocery store in Pennsylvania that has a pharmacy for about a year and a half, and I've had no issues until now. Today, I received a call from the pharmacist after my refill was submitted, saying they couldn't refill it due to a recent memo about Schedule II drugs and telehealth, which is a lie. They also mentioned my doctor is out of state....smh.

I've seen others on this subreddit facing similar problems, but I never thought it would happen to me. I'm extremely frustrated. I realized arguing with the pharmacist wouldn't help, as they have the final say and can refuse to fill a prescription if they feel uncomfortable doing so.

It's baffling that a licensed psychiatrist can legally prescribe medication, yet a pharmacist can deny filling it without any proof of drug abuse, simply because they don't want to. There seems to be a serious disconnect in the laws in this country, which is unbelievable.

Anyway, I'm done venting. Does anyone know where I can go for my prescription? I've heard that major chains can be problematic. Has anyone had experience with Sam's Club pharmacy? I was thinking mail order from Express Scripts, I've heard that it's pretty consistent, what are everyone's thoughts?

Questions/Advice Less stressful Pharmacy recommendations in Houston area

’m new to Texas and already established with a local, in-person physician for my narcolepsy and ADHD. I’m looking for pharmacy recommendations in the Houston/Humble area that is ok with realistic, straightforward estimates of when a fill will be ready when the medication is in stock, so I'm not left in the dark. I completely understand the national shortages and don't expect a pharmacy to magically fill a backordered medication.

My issue is purely about communication when the medication is in stock. Right now, I am on day 4 without my medication. My doctor sent the electronic prescription two days ago, but when I speak to someone at the pharmacy, I just get a generic "we'll text you when it's ready, but not sure if we can get to it today". They won't tell me if that means today, tomorrow, or next week. I even went in person and they didn't fill it yesterday so I eventually left. Today they don't know if they'll have time to get to it. I'm FOUR days past my medication's due fill date. So I'm not early at all.

I am currently using Costco. While they are nice and usually have good reviews, they have the medication in stock but still won't give me a timeframe. I feel like I'm being put on the back burner due to the stigma around Adderall, and I just want a place that treats me like any other patient, puts me in the queue fairly, and gives me a straightforward answer.

I am willing to drive outside of Humble/Houston if there is an independent or grocery pharmacy you highly recommend. Thank you so much for any leads!

Discussion Idle musing on a possible reason ADHD exists

As the title mentioned, this is an idle thought that occurred to me, and i thought it made sense, but im curious on other people's thoughts on if its crazy brain worms or possibly logical. :D

I was thinking on all the ..."hrekin" thats going on in the world today, and remembering i never was one to care about doing things out of peer pressure. I was always mostly a loner, and it wasnt until adulthood that i found friends to hang around, because in school i thought the whole status and popularity thing was stupid.

It made me think about how much harder it is to build up than it is to tear down, whether its a physical thing or people's emotions or society itself. But while it can be fun to destroy things once in a while (as long as i dont have to clean up the mess or deal with angry people after lol), my great enjoyment tends to come from puzzle solving and creation. It's hard, its frustrating, and the payoff is so satisfying.

It makes me wonder if ADHD is a sort of social survival trait - that having adhd individuals helps keep society from becoming too entrenched in corruption and tearing each other down to get on top, by having a subset of people who relish a challange, are willing to defy the norm, and have that mix of childish defiance and innocence that questions impossibilities and desire desperate craving to seek new experiences and knowledge.

Nature's backup plan against entrenched corruption, if you will. Thoughts? I know theres childish and immature ADHDers but i honestly cant think of any deliberately cruel ones. But maybe thats just the terrible memory recall speaking. :P

Seeking Empathy My rejection sensitivity is making me feel silly right now.

Hey yall! I recently been showing my group of friends a show I absolutely love and we watched about 6 episodes in total so far (20 minutes long for each episode and we watched 3 today) and they didnt like it at all. They scored it basically a 4/10 and we talked and they didn't really like any of the characters and mentioned how some episodes they spaced out.

There was also this recent time when we were all listening to music and I put on a song that I like and is kinda of a historical song but with a rock twist and after listening to it for 4 seconds they said it was bad and we switched it off. (They liked my other suggestions though!)

This is all really small and doesn't mean anything at all but for some reason my feelings are kinda hurt even though I know Im being irrational! In the moment it was fine but I dont know I feel drained after hanging out today and I dont know whats wrong with me.

Questions/Advice I have everything I need to turn my life around, but I can't get myself to start

I am in a very fortunate situation at the moment. I am not going into too much details or how it came to be, but for the next 2.5 years I have the opportunity to turn my life around.

For the next 2.5 years I will have the financial freedom and time to: get my driver's licence, pay off all my debt, save some money and get some online qualifications.

I have been in this situation since May of this year. I have managed to pay off 90% of my debt, but that's all I've done. For the past 3 months I have battled with myself to start online courses and to start studying for my learner's driver's license, but I can't get myself to do it. If I had committed then I would have gotten my driver's license a month ago.

I am so so scared that one day I will blink and 2.5 years have passed and I have accomplished NOTHING. Most of the day I sit here stressing over how I'm wasting time but I just can't get myself to do anything about it.

I would very much appreciate some advice on how to get my shit together.

And just FYI, I am unmedicated. I've been to multiple specialists and tried quite literally every kind of medicaton and combination of medication and nothing works. I've been trying to get treatment that works for over 10 years. So I've given up on finding someting that works.

I notice I can’t stop touching my face, and also I feel like I need to always be touching something. Or fidgeting. My mind feels like it can’t rest ever. It’s constantly racing. Plus, I also feel like I tend to image embarrassing things in my head and I physically cringe. I know these embarrassing thoughts aren’t real. But they feel so real…

Questions/Advice How do you get anything done without an external deadline (and before right before said deadline)?

Genuinely, ive tried so many things: making fake deadlines, cutting it up into smaller pieces, but alas. Unless there's an external deadline (like making something for someone or turning something in before a said date) I won't do it. And if there is i only do it right before. This is especially an issue considering im having a break year this year so there's no external pressure on anything

Questions/Advice Not sure to take Elvanse daily or not. - Here is why

Hello all,

Can you All please share your experience on long term daily use of Elvanse. I am currently struck in a dilemma; the days I use Elvanse I feel more quite, organized and collected in my mind- this is defenitly usefull on work days. Another thing it does help me motivate to get out of the door. Cons; less associative creative thoughts, less being Able to ‘enjoy’ life; experiencing real laughter/ being Able to feel emotions of others. The days im free I am not using Elvanse I am very tired and often sleep for 10+ hours and want to lay in bed all day and do not wanna do anything. Also I have muscle pains after some days of usage.

Is this just a beginner experience? How do you experience it- and you Guys got any tips? Not Looking for medical advice!

Discussion What is ur day to day like with inattentive adhd

I cant for some reason take inattentive adhd seriously

Like I understand other mental problems such as ptsd, depression , autism

But I don't see the inattentive kind of adhd as a serious condition but as something most people struggle with

Like a lot of people struggle with procrastination, most people don't want to study or do house work and they have to force themselves to do it, a lot of people don't like to be rejected

Most people r gonna forget an appointment unless they've put in their calendar and are reminded of it, most people doze off and day dream, most people are forgetful, like I know a lot of people that walk into a room and forget what they wanted to get, a lot of people also struggle with silly mistakes and carelessness- for example a lot of people are gonna make silly mistakes in a math exam e.g. 3 plus 4 equals 8 for example even if they're confident with arithmetics which ie why teachers encourage students to double check their answers

I feel like most people struggle with a lack of motivation and energy to do things and only want to do tasks they are obsessed with. Like I know for me I struggle to study everyday because it's a monotonous task

Most people genuinely struggle with discipline cause its a very difficult skill to acquire. A lot of people also only start studying during exam season because the lectures are too boring

Can people with the inattentive kind of adhd genuinely explain their day to day life with this condition with no metaphors or poetic language being used.

I'm genuinely not trying to hate - I just wanna understand the condition

Questions/Advice Caffeine / Adderall routine??

Upvotes

Hii adhd friends. I recently got prescribed Adderall for my adhd, and I do not take it everyday cause I think it’s important to have breaks. I’ll take it a few days in a row, then a day or two off, and so on.

On the days when I’m not taking my Adderall, is it generally alright to have caffeine for the focus boost? Or would that be kind of counterproductive to taking “breaks” from the medication?

I typically have zero caffeine during my adderall days, cause I’ve heard caffeine can negatively impact the adderall’s efficacy.

For context, if at all necessary, the caffeine I do consume on my days off from the medication is not a whole lot. Typically a matcha latte or two. Nothing crazy like Yerba or other energy drinks.

I feel like this is such a silly question but I genuinely don’t know much about adderall yet. And google’s answers are too sterile lol I want to hear real human experiences 😂

Thanks.

Tips/Suggestions Can someone get the ffffking sleep off my eyes?

I can't seem to shake the sleep off my eyes, no matter what. Tried everything. Stimulants, sleep apnea tests, cpap machines, mirtazapine for better sleep at night- you name it!

There's a heavy feeling behind my eyes that doesn't go away until I close them and go to sleep.

If there's a job that pays for sleeping, I'll have it, thanks!

Does anyone else face something similar?

Please, any suggestions, anything! I'm drowning here!

Questions/Advice I`m confused and exhausted, my opinions contradict with my actions.

I have always been extra skeptical of self-diagnosis, but it can't do that big of a harm to just wonder, right ?

It's a question which way too many people have asked themselves at one point. "Do I have ADHD?" I did the same, except it began as, "Is it possible that I have ADHD?" Still the same question, but less direct, and the wording reflects my philosophy on self-diagnosing.

Recently, though, I started wondering more and more. It first began with CORE on cognitive metrics (I know, online test, not reliable, blah blah, but it's the best one I had) a gap of 34 IQ points between the reasoning and working memory subtests. Then I started observing myself in my day to day more.

I noticed I could possibly suffer from executive dysfunction, since I usually delay the hell out of trivial tasks and mostly end up not doing them at all. Some of these "trivial tasks" are basic survival and self-care, like eating, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, brushing my teeth, etc.

This stuff has mostly been there for a big part of my life. I realized that I'm way more active during lectures when the teacher covers theoretical stuff I'm interested in, and I black out during moments I'm not that interested in what the teacher is telling. But of course, all of this could be self-bias...

BBBBBUUUUUT WAIT. Shit, I'm trying to self-diagnose! Despite my very clear philosophy regarding self-diagnosis. LOL

I think this is starting to get unhealthy, me trying to cope with my bad discipline by blaming a neurodevelopmental condition which I may or may not have.

What do I do?

Medication Episodic derealization and fatigue after going down in adderall dosage

I started generic adderall 5mg for one week, and went up to 10mg the second week as prescribed to catch up to my previous equivalent concerta 27mg dosage. I felt 10mg was too strong (maybe bc different family class), and experienced insomnia for 3 days, so I went back down to 5mg.

It's been 3 days since being back on 5mg again and I feel quite tired. I can nap for the whole day and still feel tired, and then sleep again at night.

I sometimes get these episodic derealization moments for a 5 seconds that comes and goes throughout the day, where it feels like I'm not in my body. I am thinking of going up to 10mg again because 5mg doesn't feel like it's working anymore, and try to tough out the insomnia or take it earlier in the day, but was wondering if anyone has gone through something similar.

Questions/Advice Long term impact of multiple hyperfocus sessions?

Upvotes

I’m in my late 20s and recently self diagnosed myself having adhd. I have severe fidgeting habit from early childhood. But I never faced any issue with my academics until my college. Even then I did ok to graduate and get a good job. All my life nobody around me guessed or noticed I have adhd. Only until recently I started noticing my hyperfocus for hours straight while constantly tapping my legs. I have to binge watch a lot at night just to keep me sane.

My job is highly stressful but well paying. I’m curious what are the long term effects of multiple hyperfocus sessions in a day. will my cognitive levels drop after a certain age?

Questions/Advice Missed Appointment

Hello so I am not coming on here to get sympathy however I have waited around 6-7 years for an initial contact meeting as i was pushed to the back of the adult queue 3 years into my ADHD diagnosis (turned 18) and with working lates (1am-2am finishes) I missed my appointment this afternoon.

I am curious as to what will happen if they discharge me. Will I not be able to get my medication anymore? Will they completely push me to the back of the queue again?

I am lost as to what I can do as I really am dissapointed in myself for missing this appointment as I understand how long wait times are for meds.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Questions/Advice Anxiety about starting Adderall XR!

Hello. First time here. Just diagnosed a few days ago. I didn’t even have a slight idea I that I had adhd.

I am concerned about taking stimulants because I have pretty severe anxiety. I was prescribed generic adderall xr 10mg.

What if I don’t actually have adhd and was misdiagnosed? All I did was take a written test thing and talk to a doctor. Am I gonna bug out?

Just looking for some insight in what it’s like. I keep seeing conflicting stories on here.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Do you think there's an association between extraversion/introversion and ADHD?

Obviously, anyone can be either thing to varying degrees, but do you think people with ADHD are generally more likely to be one of them? Or does it vary by subtype? As in, combined and hyperactive people are more extroverted and inattentive ones are more introverted? Or is it totally random and ADHD has no effect on this part of your personality?

Questions/Advice For those who finally walked away from an ADHD relationship, did life get better?

Hi! I am 28/F who fell in love with my dx ex. The novelty of our relationship was incredible, especially considering he was my first boyfriend. However, as an empath, something just didn't sit right with me when we were together. It felt like I couldn't quite put my finger on it... but hey, the mask was top-tier.
One moment I was questioning the relationship, and the next day I was questioning myself for even questioning it.

Anyway, I fell deeply in love with him and, like most of you have felt, I felt it too. I moved in with him (he lives in another country, so I had to leave my career and everything I've ever known just to be with this man.

And just like that... the mask slipped.
I felt like a toy that he would put back on his shelf whenever he got bored with me. I cannot speak a word otherwise he would perceive me as someone needy and he would rage because of his rejection sensitivity. For the longest time, I felt so lonely. The arguments kept coming until we couldn't repair things anymore.
He booked me a flight ticket, kicked me out of his apartment, and here I am, alone in an unfamiliar country while waiting for my flight, asking y'all to shed some light because my heart is absolutely breaking.

It's like a switch flipped inside his head, and all his love, care, and kindness just flew out the window to abandon me so easily in just a day. I don't even know this man anymore... How could someone be so cold and cruel?

So, to those who left or perhaps were left by an ADHD partner, how did you move forward? When did you finally start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? Did you ever have regrets?

And if there's any advice you could give to those who recently got out of it, what would it be?

Questions/Advice Question about leg bouncing

So when I’m in school a lot of people (including me) bounce their leg in class (most of them doing it almost every second of class (including me)). I never notice I’m bouncing my leg a lot until either a classmate or teacher says something but otherwise I never notice. Anyone else have this same thing happen and if so do you ever notice when you’re doing it?
