Discussion Parents hiding and controlling medication

Im 19. I woke up at 11:40 this morning and tried to get my vyvanse from my mother. She usually hides it from me and doesn’t let me take it by myself for some reason. She said I couldn’t take it since I woke up 40 mins late. I have chemistry exams to study for and need vyvanse to study. My doctor said I have one of the worst cases of inattentive adhd he had ever seen and I NEED these meds to be productive. I’m so pissed off right now.

My mother is very controlling and cruel at times. Many members of my extended family also see this behavior and sympathize with me. They can be very cruel at times. When i’m on meds everything is great. I can focus and be productive. My memory actually works on vyvanse and I can study loads of information in one session and retain the info for later. I’m so pissed and stressed right now.

Medication Who was gonna tell me that i could of been living a much eaiser life this whole time????

Holy shit I got prescribed meds for the first time and took them today and oh my gosh I was so productive I deep cleaned my fridge & my car & my room. I finally read the book I’ve been trying to read. I genuinely can’t believe how much easier everything was I didn’t just try to do a task and sit there and dissociate.

I feel like I can function like a normal person all the things I thought was me just being lazy are like fixed ??? Perhaps I am not just lazy just like untreated and like I’ve done a bunch of therapy and such over the years but nothing was as affective as this it’s like magic I swear.

Questions/Advice How do you get off your phone?

Im overwhelmed and tired which makes me doomscroll, which makes me overwhelmed and tired. Viscous cycle and all that.
I have so much schoolwork and hobbies, but starting anything feels like walking to the starting line of a marathon. So i just choose the easy way out, by doomscrolling endlessly.

Im not diagnosed (but strongly suspecting though), but though that since ADHD'ers also struggle with executive dysfunction (including starting tasks, breaking patterns) i thought id ask here.

Questions/Advice Avoid messages when overwhelmed?

Is it an ADHD-thing to avoid wanting to read/answer messages when you feel overwhelmed by your work/private life when too many things are going on? Or more of an introvert reaction?

I tend to do this a lot when it happens and then I disappear for 3-4 days without ever wanting to answer anyone.

Medication Long term medicated ADHDers, do you have to be on meds forever?

Do you have to take meds forever?

Will they help my brain to a certain extent where if i was in the future to slowly titrate off of it it would be okay and I wouldn't be negative affected?

How have you been affected long term by your medication do you need more or less? Do you feel better now than you have done?

Just curious about other peoples experiences.

Thank you all for your responses, I hope I find my right dose and I can still change mentally

Discussion Why is it every time I try to start actually focusing on getting work done, I get the sudden urge to use the bathroom?

Seriously, I could be distracted or doom scrolling for some time and then I’m like “okay, time to ACTUALLY start working on this”. I go into focus mode and then BAM - sudden urge to poop or I suddenly have to pee REALLY bad and then I can’t focus because of the uncomfortable bodily sensation. And then, getting up to go use the bathroom is a distraction in itself from the task I wanted to actually start doing and it pisses (haha) me off.

WHY?!!??

Discussion Do you think there's an association between extraversion/introversion and ADHD?

Obviously, anyone can be either thing to varying degrees, but do you think people with ADHD are generally more likely to be one of them? Or does it vary by subtype? As in, combined and hyperactive people are more extroverted and inattentive ones are more introverted? Or is it totally random and ADHD has no effect on this part of your personality?

Medication Every doctor I've had takes 1 look at me and acts like i will miss use the medications.

Ive cried in so many doctors offices. I just want to feel normal again. I keep having doctors make me jump through hoops to ultimately tell me that they don't prescribe the meds i need. Then ask if i would like something to help with anxiety and depression..

Now im trying a online company for my appointments and my doctor is not understanding that every pharmacy she is sending me to is on back order. Was able to get 10 out of the 30 and she is acting like i have the whole prescription despite them faxing her the information. Im paying out of pocket for the appointments and the meds. I have no insurance until my job hires me full time.

Success/Celebration I finally learnt how to braid my hair!!!

I am a late teen and i’ve always struggled with braiding my hair as my ADHD makes it hard for small actions with my hands. Normally my mum braids my hair but i’ve always wanted to braid my own hair like all the other girls. It’s 1 am right now and i tried it before bed and I actually did it! I’m crying right now i’m so proud of myself I always thought that I would never be able to be independent but i’ve worked so hard to be who I am today and I just wanted to share that :)

Questions/Advice Question about leg bouncing

So when I’m in school a lot of people (including me) bounce their leg in class (most of them doing it almost every second of class (including me)). I never notice I’m bouncing my leg a lot until either a classmate or teacher says something but otherwise I never notice. Anyone else have this same thing happen and if so do you ever notice when you’re doing it?

Questions/Advice Cannot start doing anything

I have an issue with pressure and it has severely impacted my life negatively. I read a lot here about time-blindedness but for me, I perceive time like a hawk. If anything I am aware of each and every passing second especially if I have an assignment to submit or a deadline for a project. And then I dont do it. I simply watch the opportunity slip out of my hands. Everytime. I am tired. I have no idea what this is. I simply cannot just start. If anyone has any advice, I would be genuinely grateful. Thank you.

Tips/Suggestions Can't believe I haven't just been eating cereal in the morning...

As an adult I've always avoided cereal for breakfast because it has a reputation for being pretty worthless nutritionally, and most other options for breakfast are too much work to deal with in the morning.

In truth, that perception mostly comes from kid's cereal, which might as well be candy with the amount of added sugars.

Actual, grown-up cereal? That shit's got fiber (which is so hard to get enough of if you're not eating 15 bananas a day), it's got whole grains, and it's got the carbs we need for that morning energy. Pouring myself a bowl of it and grabbing a protein shake (or better yet some greek yogurt for the gut benefits) gives me just about everything I need for the start of the day, and it takes about 30 seconds.

This is huge tech, and I wish I had gotten on it sooner!

EDIT: You should still eat fruit though! I looked into it and cereals mostly contain insoluble fiber. Luckily you don't need too much soluble fiber, it looks like an apple or a banana contains about all you need.

Seeking Empathy I barely have any hobbies and it's making me feel so boring

Upvotes

i do go to the gym and play video games with friends every few days.

but i have no real interests. i dont know anything about things i theoretically like. like fandoms and stuff. im also kinda bad at the game i play and i see little to no progress.

i used to love drawing and painting. but now i only do that when i need a self made present for somebody.

and i hate how quickly i lose interest in so many things. additionally, everything i do like / wanna try out feels like a chore when i think about it (like drawing, painting) or i simply never really feel like doing it.

instead im just on my phone the whole time. either texting someone, watching tiktok / reels or watching youtube.

lately ive been joining some hangout servers on discord and i can never contribute to any conversations because i dont know anything about anything. and i cant even start conversations because, well, i never haave anything to talk about except telling people what im doing in the moment.

no wonder no one on discord has ever really wanted to be friends with me / actively dm me within the 5 years ive had discord. because im just extremely boring.

can anyone with adhd relate to this? or am i really just lazy

Seeking Empathy After all, you're still you

Well, I am writing this to vent, to get some thoughts off my chest, and in case someone out there needs to read this.

I know that having ADHD and depression can often feel overwhelming because of the thoughts constantly looping in your head. I know what that feeling of fear is like; for me, it was the feeling of not being valid, of not being worth it, or believing your problems are too big for you. But hey, that's not true. Sometimes accepting help is hard, maybe because you don't want to be a burden or tire people out, but hey, you are special to all of those people.

Feeling pain in your soul is okay, but it's not the only thing that exists. There is always something or someone out there to remind you that there are beautiful things in the world—like the friends you laugh with, your supportive family, or that special person who loves you unconditionally.

I know how hard it is to get up with no motivation and force yourself to do things, but there is always a reason to find your willpower. If you don't want to do it for yourself anymore, do it for this internet stranger who wants to see the person behind the screen pull through.

Despite everything, you are not alone. You are a beautiful, special, and wonderful person who is always going to shine. Even as an internet stranger, I want to listen to people so they can vent without any pressure.

It was hard for me to deal with everything that overwhelms the mind—the thoughts, the anxiety, and the numbness—but I learned that you can achieve anything.

Thank you so much for reading, and remember how special you are. Sending you the very best and lots of love, this internet stranger. :)

Questions/Advice How did your adhd medication feel when you first started taking it?

I am reaching out to a doctor or nurse psychiatric practitioner to see if I have adhd.

Not looking for a diagnosis. Giving context and hopefully one of you relates and can answer my question at end.
I have trouble concentrating, staying on task, am messy, can not (edit) keep things consistent. I will work out for a week and give up. I will study for a week before a major exam (cpa) but can’t focus for the life of me a month before, I failed.
I make really stupid decisions, like not proof reading my resume and leaving my personal snarky comments I make to myself in my resume.
At times I think I’m just an immature manchild. But I always look back on those actions thinking how fucking immature I was, only to do something immature like that again in the future.
I thought it was depression or stress. But I think I may have to consider adhd.

I want to know how long it took for you personally to see if your medication was working or not. Did it take several weeks to see improvements in your focus? Or was it that day? Because I read the medication takes hours and I have a hard time seeing that.

Edit: I have taken therapy and medication for depression. So I try to fix myself in other ways. The depression is pretty much under control.

Questions/Advice D-amphetamine last rate

I’ve been taking D-Amphetamine 20mg, two a day as prescribed to me and it only last maybe two or three hours for me per tablet. I feel locked in but not for so long and when I say three hours I’m being generous. Has anyone experienced the same situation and if so any recommendation would be helpful. Maybe I need a higher dose or maybe I need to take an extended dose.

Seeking Empathy i hate cleaning and i hate having a clean room

some of you might call me nasty for this, but im so distraught i have to write about it.

idk if this is an adhd thing but me and my mom cleaned my room and i geniuenly want to cry (not in the good way). my room is pretty big, and even though i have bunch of decorations and posters it still feels so empty and the space is so overwhelming and i hate it. 3 hours of pure mental torture of having to organize things where they dont belong (because they belong ON MY DESK WHERE I CAN SEE THEM. NOT IN STUPID DRAWERS), only to be on the verge of tears as its finally nearing to the end.

my clutter is my physical separator of the room zones and it brings me comfort that i know exactly where everything is, now everything is jumbled up together and i already dont remember where most of my things are, i hate this.

i also feel bad for having this reaction though, because my mom was helping me and now im just really anxious and uncomfortable after all the effort and time we've both put in.

does anyone have any similar experiences or am i just crazy??

Tips/Suggestions How do I cope with being such a wildly incompetent adult?

Basically, does anyone have any tips or advice for getting things done that don’t come up often? (e.g., emissions testing, registration, mundane bullshit like that)

I’m 22 and I feel like even though I’m just getting started with my adult life, I am going to continuously fail myself and everyone else around me. I forgot to get emissions done on my car and so my registration is expired. I got pulled over yesterday and I didn’t have my insurance in the car, luckily the officer let me go, and after talking to my dad he said he wouldn’t lecture me on it, just get it done. Howeverrr my brother texts me later to tell me that my dad is losing his shit about it, saying he’s tired of “holding our hands”. My brother and I are both diagnosed ADHD and my dad almost certainly has it too. It just doesn’t feel good to hear that, even if it’s not directly? I don’t know.

Questions/Advice Do hyperfixations return?

So I had this hyperfixation that lasted 9 months but during it I felt the most happiest in my entire life. I loved it so much that I started seeking it out in other things, similar things, I loved and adored things like I never had and felt alive again since I was a kid. I loved this hyperfixation with all my heart. But around January of this year I started feeling tired of it, like it wasn't special and it devastated me. Like it broke my heart. I tried for months to rekindle some spark of it and even now I can't feel anything for it, less than anything. I've tried accepting that, tried moving on, but nothing has done it for me, nothing inspires me or motivates me. I've tried letting myself breathe and truly step away from it but I'm scared that I'll never like it again. What should I do?

Tips/Suggestions My boss permits focus time

Upvotes

I was diagnosed with ADHD in December last year. I’m a 39-year-old woman working in IT, mainly providing customer support for our internal users.

We receive around 10 user requests per day via email, so the workload isn’t particularly high in terms of the number of requests I personally have to handle. Still, I wanted to try incorporating more focused work time into my schedule so I can get things done that require sustained concentration, such as updating guides, writing documentation and protocols, etc.

My boss, who is also a woman, recently told me that I’m not allowed to schedule focus blocks because I need to be available for users to call me whenever they need support.

The problem is that this has other consequences: without dedicated time to focus, I struggle to finish the tasks that require deeper concentration, which means that I end up delivering some things late. I tried explaining to her that multitasking doesn’t work well for me and that having scheduled time to focus would not only help me be more productive, but would also have a positive impact on my mental health.

At some point, I stopped trying to explain because I felt like I wasn’t getting through to her.

Now I’m wondering whether I should start looking for another job.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you handle it? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences or advice on how to approach this situation.

Medication What would you do if you were in my situation?

Upvotes

I got diagnosed last year with ADHD and got my 8yr old diagnosed too. We were put on same meds. Fast acting Ritalin.
I had lots of stress and the more stressed I got, harder it was to focus and felt meds didn’t help. I would forget to take afternoon doses etc. dr wouldn’t give me long acting until they knew what was working but I struggled to advance to even the next stage. I ended up depressed and suicidal. Hospital psychiatrist put me on mertazipine and told me to stop adhd meds as he felt they were making my mental health symptoms worse . I felt calm and relaxed on mertazipine and less overwhelmed. Anyway life is a bit of a blur now. My daughter also got agitated and more poorly behaved as a result. I’m scared of going back on meds and I feel like genetic testing would help find better meds but that’s not available in Australia. I feel like I have to choose between mental health vs adhd treatment. I also know that I could be better and that adhd is holding me back in a lot of ways.

Questions/Advice Has exercising helped you with ADHD?

I really want to start my weight loss journey, but my ADHD is making it so difficult to actually start. I struggle with
motivation, consistency, and getting myself into a routine.

For those of you with ADHD, has exercising helped you manage it or made it easier to stay consistent with fitness?
