Discussion Parents hiding and controlling medication

Im 19. I woke up at 11:40 this morning and tried to get my vyvanse from my mother. She usually hides it from me and doesn’t let me take it by myself for some reason. She said I couldn’t take it since I woke up 40 mins late. I have chemistry exams to study for and need vyvanse to study. My doctor said I have one of the worst cases of inattentive adhd he had ever seen and I NEED these meds to be productive. I’m so pissed off right now.

My mother is very controlling and cruel at times. Many members of my extended family also see this behavior and sympathize with me. They can be very cruel at times. When i’m on meds everything is great. I can focus and be productive. My memory actually works on vyvanse and I can study loads of information in one session and retain the info for later. I’m so pissed and stressed right now.

Medication Who was gonna tell me that i could of been living a much eaiser life this whole time????

Holy shit I got prescribed meds for the first time and took them today and oh my gosh I was so productive I deep cleaned my fridge & my car & my room. I finally read the book I’ve been trying to read. I genuinely can’t believe how much easier everything was I didn’t just try to do a task and sit there and dissociate.

I feel like I can function like a normal person all the things I thought was me just being lazy are like fixed ??? Perhaps I am not just lazy just like untreated and like I’ve done a bunch of therapy and such over the years but nothing was as affective as this it’s like magic I swear.

Medication Long term medicated ADHDers, do you have to be on meds forever?

Do you have to take meds forever?

Will they help my brain to a certain extent where if i was in the future to slowly titrate off of it it would be okay and I wouldn't be negative affected?

How have you been affected long term by your medication do you need more or less? Do you feel better now than you have done?

Just curious about other peoples experiences.

Thank you all for your responses, I hope I find my right dose and I can still change mentally

Questions/Advice Cannot start doing anything

I have an issue with pressure and it has severely impacted my life negatively. I read a lot here about time-blindedness but for me, I perceive time like a hawk. If anything I am aware of each and every passing second especially if I have an assignment to submit or a deadline for a project. And then I dont do it. I simply watch the opportunity slip out of my hands. Everytime. I am tired. I have no idea what this is. I simply cannot just start. If anyone has any advice, I would be genuinely grateful. Thank you.

Seeking Empathy After all, you're still you

Well, I am writing this to vent, to get some thoughts off my chest, and in case someone out there needs to read this.

I know that having ADHD and depression can often feel overwhelming because of the thoughts constantly looping in your head. I know what that feeling of fear is like; for me, it was the feeling of not being valid, of not being worth it, or believing your problems are too big for you. But hey, that's not true. Sometimes accepting help is hard, maybe because you don't want to be a burden or tire people out, but hey, you are special to all of those people.

Feeling pain in your soul is okay, but it's not the only thing that exists. There is always something or someone out there to remind you that there are beautiful things in the world—like the friends you laugh with, your supportive family, or that special person who loves you unconditionally.

I know how hard it is to get up with no motivation and force yourself to do things, but there is always a reason to find your willpower. If you don't want to do it for yourself anymore, do it for this internet stranger who wants to see the person behind the screen pull through.

Despite everything, you are not alone. You are a beautiful, special, and wonderful person who is always going to shine. Even as an internet stranger, I want to listen to people so they can vent without any pressure.

It was hard for me to deal with everything that overwhelms the mind—the thoughts, the anxiety, and the numbness—but I learned that you can achieve anything.

Thank you so much for reading, and remember how special you are. Sending you the very best and lots of love, this internet stranger. :)

Questions/Advice How do you get off your phone?

Im overwhelmed and tired which makes me doomscroll, which makes me overwhelmed and tired. Viscous cycle and all that.
I have so much schoolwork and hobbies, but starting anything feels like walking to the starting line of a marathon. So i just choose the easy way out, by doomscrolling endlessly.

Im not diagnosed (but strongly suspecting though), but though that since ADHD'ers also struggle with executive dysfunction (including starting tasks, breaking patterns) i thought id ask here.

Discussion Why is it every time I try to start actually focusing on getting work done, I get the sudden urge to use the bathroom?

Seriously, I could be distracted or doom scrolling for some time and then I’m like “okay, time to ACTUALLY start working on this”. I go into focus mode and then BAM - sudden urge to poop or I suddenly have to pee REALLY bad and then I can’t focus because of the uncomfortable bodily sensation. And then, getting up to go use the bathroom is a distraction in itself from the task I wanted to actually start doing and it pisses (haha) me off.

WHY?!!??

Medication Every doctor I've had takes 1 look at me and acts like i will miss use the medications.

Ive cried in so many doctors offices. I just want to feel normal again. I keep having doctors make me jump through hoops to ultimately tell me that they don't prescribe the meds i need. Then ask if i would like something to help with anxiety and depression..

Now im trying a online company for my appointments and my doctor is not understanding that every pharmacy she is sending me to is on back order. Was able to get 10 out of the 30 and she is acting like i have the whole prescription despite them faxing her the information. Im paying out of pocket for the appointments and the meds. I have no insurance until my job hires me full time.

Seeking Empathy Pharmacy Issue - PISSED OFF!

I have been getting my Adderall from a grocery store in Pennsylvania that has a pharmacy for about a year and a half, and I've had no issues until now. Today, I received a call from the pharmacist after my refill was submitted, saying they couldn't refill it due to a recent memo about Schedule II drugs and telehealth, which is a lie. They also mentioned my doctor is out of state....smh.

I've seen others on this subreddit facing similar problems, but I never thought it would happen to me. I'm extremely frustrated. I realized arguing with the pharmacist wouldn't help, as they have the final say and can refuse to fill a prescription if they feel uncomfortable doing so.

It's baffling that a licensed psychiatrist can legally prescribe medication, yet a pharmacist can deny filling it without any proof of drug abuse, simply because they don't want to. There seems to be a serious disconnect in the laws in this country, which is unbelievable.

Anyway, I'm done venting. Does anyone know where I can go for my prescription? I've heard that major chains can be problematic. Has anyone had experience with Sam's Club pharmacy? I was thinking mail order from Express Scripts, I've heard that it's pretty consistent, what are everyone's thoughts?

Questions/Advice How did your adhd medication feel when you first started taking it?

I am reaching out to a doctor or nurse psychiatric practitioner to see if I have adhd.

Not looking for a diagnosis. Giving context and hopefully one of you relates and can answer my question at end.
I have trouble concentrating, staying on task, am messy, can not (edit) keep things consistent. I will work out for a week and give up. I will study for a week before a major exam (cpa) but can’t focus for the life of me a month before, I failed.
I make really stupid decisions, like not proof reading my resume and leaving my personal snarky comments I make to myself in my resume.
At times I think I’m just an immature manchild. But I always look back on those actions thinking how fucking immature I was, only to do something immature like that again in the future.
I thought it was depression or stress. But I think I may have to consider adhd.

I want to know how long it took for you personally to see if your medication was working or not. Did it take several weeks to see improvements in your focus? Or was it that day? Because I read the medication takes hours and I have a hard time seeing that.

Edit: I have taken therapy and medication for depression. So I try to fix myself in other ways. The depression is pretty much under control.

Discussion Idle musing on a possible reason ADHD exists

As the title mentioned, this is an idle thought that occurred to me, and i thought it made sense, but im curious on other people's thoughts on if its crazy brain worms or possibly logical. :D

I was thinking on all the ..."hrekin" thats going on in the world today, and remembering i never was one to care about doing things out of peer pressure. I was always mostly a loner, and it wasnt until adulthood that i found friends to hang around, because in school i thought the whole status and popularity thing was stupid.

It made me think about how much harder it is to build up than it is to tear down, whether its a physical thing or people's emotions or society itself. But while it can be fun to destroy things once in a while (as long as i dont have to clean up the mess or deal with angry people after lol), my great enjoyment tends to come from puzzle solving and creation. It's hard, its frustrating, and the payoff is so satisfying.

It makes me wonder if ADHD is a sort of social survival trait - that having adhd individuals helps keep society from becoming too entrenched in corruption and tearing each other down to get on top, by having a subset of people who relish a challange, are willing to defy the norm, and have that mix of childish defiance and innocence that questions impossibilities and desire desperate craving to seek new experiences and knowledge.

Nature's backup plan against entrenched corruption, if you will. Thoughts? I know theres childish and immature ADHDers but i honestly cant think of any deliberately cruel ones. But maybe thats just the terrible memory recall speaking. :P

Seeking Empathy Schrodinger’s stupid

I hate being caught in this limbo. I’m so smart! But I’m doing everything wrong.

I’m too emotional. I can’t do basic tasks correctly (I have pretty bad visual-spatial disorder so I struggle to group things by size or get things looking straight/even). I’m too weird to be friends with. I’m too flakey to develop a skill. I can’t intuit the same social cues my family can, so I’m treated like a child. My presence is a burden, even when I’m actively assisting that person with something.

There are no accommodations that can be made for me. I’m properly medicated, I’m in therapy. I’m just too stupid for my age. I’m smart enough to earn a living, but not smart enough to be accepted as an equal.

Discussion Do you think there's an association between extraversion/introversion and ADHD?

Obviously, anyone can be either thing to varying degrees, but do you think people with ADHD are generally more likely to be one of them? Or does it vary by subtype? As in, combined and hyperactive people are more extroverted and inattentive ones are more introverted? Or is it totally random and ADHD has no effect on this part of your personality?

Success/Celebration I finally learnt how to braid my hair!!!

I am a late teen and i’ve always struggled with braiding my hair as my ADHD makes it hard for small actions with my hands. Normally my mum braids my hair but i’ve always wanted to braid my own hair like all the other girls. It’s 1 am right now and i tried it before bed and I actually did it! I’m crying right now i’m so proud of myself I always thought that I would never be able to be independent but i’ve worked so hard to be who I am today and I just wanted to share that :)

Questions/Advice Can ADHD be ruled out by a blood test?

I’m confused about something and would really appreciate some advice.

I strongly suspected that I might have ADHD, so I went to a regular doctor. He ordered some laboratory tests, including a blood test. However, he didn’t really ask me any questions about my symptoms, childhood history, attention problems, or how these issues affect my daily life.

After looking at the test results, he told me that I only have fear/anxiety and that I don’t have ADHD.

This confused me because, as far as I understand, ADHD cannot be diagnosed or ruled out through a blood test.

Can a blood test actually determine whether someone has ADHD? If a doctor ruled out ADHD mainly based on laboratory/blood tests without doing a proper ADHD assessment, should I consider getting a second opinion from a psychiatrist or another professional who specializes in ADHD?

I’d also appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through an ADHD assessment. What was the proper diagnostic process like for you?

Questions/Advice my sister moved in and suddenly i do things. i can't work out what part of that is doing it

i have adhd and the big stuff is fine. i can hyperfocus on a hard problem for nine hours straight. what i can't do is call the dentist, or send one email, or go to bed.

i've read about body doubling for years. never tried it with anyone. the reason is i'm the kind of person who stops answering everybody when things pile up, i go quiet for a week or two, and then replying feels worse than it did on day one so i keep not doing it. matching with a stranger and then ghosting them in the exact week i needed them, no thanks.

then my sister moved in with me a couple of months ago to help me through a rough patch.

and it works, annoyingly well. if i tell her i'm going to do something, i do it. not because she checks up on me. she doesn't chase me or ask how it went. i just said it to her face and now it's real.

what i can't work out is which part is doing the work: - that someone is physically in the flat - that it's someone whose opinion i actually care about - or just that i said it out loud to a human at all

it matters for the weeks she isn't here. i've tried saying it out loud to myself, writing it down, telling a friend over text. none of it does the same thing. but i don't know if that's because text is weaker or because i knew nobody was going to follow up.

so for people who body double or have an accountability partner: what actually makes it work for you? is it the presence, the person, or just having committed out loud to someone?

and has anyone got a version that survives you going quiet for two weeks? that's the part i keep failing.

tldr: sister moved in, i suddenly do things, no idea if it's her being there or just having said it out loud. want to know what makes it work for you.

Questions/Advice school is so traumatizing

Summer is about to end and it's going to be my last year of high school soon. I live in an Asian country so academic achievements are VERY important here and that's part of the reason why I hate school so much. 've been so terrified of going to school since kindergarten. I've struggled with constant scolding, horrible academic performance, family/relationship problems, stress, etc. I don't think I've been truly happy ever since I went to kindergarten, and I'm absolutely terrified to start this new school year. I can't bear the trauma school has been giving me for over a decade now. I wanted to study to prepare for it, but then I just stare at my book and zone out. My parents won't let me take meds, but I'm genuinely struggling and I think I've wasted all of my potentials.

I think a lot of you went through the same experience as I did. I'm clueless about what to do next, and I need your advice on how to cope or to overcome this hell hole.

Questions/Advice Can’t workout on days I take my meds

Anyone else have this problem I took my 15mg xr adderal at 11am and at 9pm go to the gym and barely get thru 3 sets before I’m on the verge of passing out feeling like I’m suffocating I have to breath as deep as possible and can’t continue the lift. What will counteract this? Inhaler? Vasodilators? Blood pressure meds? I’m doing tons of research to figure this out I can’t not go to the gym but I can’t also not take my meds

Questions/Advice Question about leg bouncing

So when I’m in school a lot of people (including me) bounce their leg in class (most of them doing it almost every second of class (including me)). I never notice I’m bouncing my leg a lot until either a classmate or teacher says something but otherwise I never notice. Anyone else have this same thing happen and if so do you ever notice when you’re doing it?

Tips/Suggestions How do I cope with being such a wildly incompetent adult?

Basically, does anyone have any tips or advice for getting things done that don’t come up often? (e.g., emissions testing, registration, mundane bullshit like that)

I’m 22 and I feel like even though I’m just getting started with my adult life, I am going to continuously fail myself and everyone else around me. I forgot to get emissions done on my car and so my registration is expired. I got pulled over yesterday and I didn’t have my insurance in the car, luckily the officer let me go, and after talking to my dad he said he wouldn’t lecture me on it, just get it done. Howeverrr my brother texts me later to tell me that my dad is losing his shit about it, saying he’s tired of “holding our hands”. My brother and I are both diagnosed ADHD and my dad almost certainly has it too. It just doesn’t feel good to hear that, even if it’s not directly? I don’t know.

Seeking Empathy My rejection sensitivity is making me feel silly right now.

Hey yall! I recently been showing my group of friends a show I absolutely love and we watched about 6 episodes in total so far (20 minutes long for each episode and we watched 3 today) and they didnt like it at all. They scored it basically a 4/10 and we talked and they didn't really like any of the characters and mentioned how some episodes they spaced out.

There was also this recent time when we were all listening to music and I put on a song that I like and is kinda of a historical song but with a rock twist and after listening to it for 4 seconds they said it was bad and we switched it off. (They liked my other suggestions though!)

This is all really small and doesn't mean anything at all but for some reason my feelings are kinda hurt even though I know Im being irrational! In the moment it was fine but I dont know I feel drained after hanging out today and I dont know whats wrong with me.

Seeking Empathy I barely have any hobbies and it's making me feel so boring

i do go to the gym and play video games with friends every few days.

but i have no real interests. i dont know anything about things i theoretically like. like fandoms and stuff. im also kinda bad at the game i play and i see little to no progress.

i used to love drawing and painting. but now i only do that when i need a self made present for somebody.

and i hate how quickly i lose interest in so many things. additionally, everything i do like / wanna try out feels like a chore when i think about it (like drawing, painting) or i simply never really feel like doing it.

instead im just on my phone the whole time. either texting someone, watching tiktok / reels or watching youtube.

lately ive been joining some hangout servers on discord and i can never contribute to any conversations because i dont know anything about anything. and i cant even start conversations because, well, i never haave anything to talk about except telling people what im doing in the moment.

no wonder no one on discord has ever really wanted to be friends with me / actively dm me within the 5 years ive had discord. because im just extremely boring.

can anyone with adhd relate to this? or am i really just lazy

Questions/Advice Been sitting on the couch all day reading manga for the past week.

For the past week, I've been spending my entire days reading manga. It is currently the last summer break before I start college, so I know that I won't have this much free time again. I want to spend my time doing the 7 hobbies I have (math, philosophy, music, programming, writing, language learning, basketball) along with getting basic tasks down like brushing my teeth in the morning, exercising, etc. Another problem is that this manga I found is extremely addicting (called oresama teacher if you're curious), and I find myself thinking about it the entire day. So part of the battle is also that I'm eager to get back on the couch to read it.

If I can't take care of my basic needs, let alone spend dedicated time on my hobbies, it seems like my time in college is going to be very difficult, which starts in just three weeks.

Edit: forgot to add that reading this manga is also causing me to stay up at night.

Seeking Empathy is it normal to struggle to play videogames?

is it even logical to struggle to play videogames? I find it so dumb because videogames might seem like the easiest activity of all but in my case i have a really hard time sticking with a game that has a story or tangible progression, like Resident Evil or Mario Odyssey; most of the time i find myself playing games with the same gameplay loop over and over again like fortnite, candy crush, even minesweeper, games that I dont even enjoy anymore but are easy to play in an instant and dont ask ANYTHING from you (except money) I guess playing dumb live service games is my way of doomscrolling which I dont do because I dont have social media anymore (deleted them)
