About 48GB RAM

u/OldJames47 14h ago

Wait till Black Friday and it will get you 36 GB of RAM.

Joke’s on you when I get my 32 GB for Christmas

Just wait until the AI bubble bursts, retailers will lower the price so much that you'll be able to get 16gb!

shit load of books

131

u/istalri96 18h ago

I've gotten back into reading again recently. God books are not cheap I was at a little private bookstore. Vibes were immaculate but the prices were rough. But I would rather support a small business. Granted I can get books 50% from Barnes and Noble my brother works for them so he can get stuff cheaper. Which would be the smarter choice.

library the ones you aren't sure about and buy the ones you'll think you'll love.

20

Then id say a good rule of thumb might be to buy from b&n when you are going in knowing what you want, and then when you are just wandering and checking out workers suggestions go local

Buying books and actually reading the books you buy are two completely separate hobbies.

5

u/aluminumnek 17h ago

I just want one book and it’s about $1000. These don’t come up for sale very often if at all…

From REMs album, fables of the reconstruction,

"Life and How to Live It" takes inspiration from a book entitled Life: How to Live by eccentric Athens–based author Brivs Mekis.[16] Mekis split his house into two distinct halves and alternated between living in the two until he died.[17] After his death, copies of the book were found; despite these copies being made none had ever been sold or given away, until after his death.

5

u/Extreme-Bite-9123 17h ago

I didn’t even consider rarer books I wanted, that would probably be enough to get me New Hampshires favorite son, the Benjamin Harrison trio of books, and a few more

I would finally be able to indulge the urge to get some fancy yarn and then a lot of cheaper yarns. Maybe some fancy crochet hooks too.

4

u/fuckingskeletor 15h ago

Was literally just thinking "I couldn buy so much yarn..."

12

u/teresajs 18h ago

Yup, I estimate 4-5 sweaters' worth of really good yarn.  That would keep me busy for over 6 months.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/CarlRJ 14h ago

I know a few friends who would see this and reply "challenge accepted". One who has calculated that she shouldn't by any more yarn because she literally has a lifetime supply now. But she still hears the siren's call of pretty colors.

A lot of paint, a decent army, or a single leg of a Titan.

Warhammer is both expensive and cheap, at the same time.

156

u/MushroomGoats1 19h ago

Warhammer is like my cheapest hobby. Compared to shooting or car parts....it's very cheap. The secret is to paint every single guy you get. No shameful grey dudes on the board

65

u/darkagl1 18h ago

But the great grey pile of shame is part of the hobby isn't it?

35

u/H4LF4D 18h ago

It aint my warhammer if i dont have 3 ongoing projects that I surely will get to within the next fiscal year or end of edition, whichever comes last

An airbrush setup and moderate pile of shame.

12

u/ballin_buddha 19h ago

I have 5 armies and only 1 has 2k points of painted models. The shame is real

6

u/CrowdCon-troll 18h ago

I've had my Warlord for like 5 years now and i just cannot bring myself to touch such expensive pieces. Let alone paint it.

→ More replies (1)

91

u/CT-96 19h ago

I wouldn't call anything in Warhammer cheap. Except the books. A single 15ml pot of paint is almost $10CAD which is insane.

42

u/sephirothFFVII 19h ago

Why is the paint so expensive? Couldn't you just take a sample and color match it?

94

u/k-to-the 19h ago

Theoretically sure, the bigger thing is that the models are so small that paints are made with very fine pigment particles. It doesn't need to be the company brand paint for sure, but versions of hobby paints are usually better at thinning out enough to not glob up the details but still get full color coverage.

44

u/Khanon555 19h ago

A thinned out pot of paint can also cover a ton of models for a long time, if you store it correctly.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/FactorOdd9670 18h ago

This is so true, craft acrylics just turn into chalky sludge the second you thin them down enough for tiny details. Investing in decent hobby paint saves you so much time and frustration trying to fix clogged scale lines.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Arbiter_89 18h ago

A lot of people are giving partial answers. Here's the most complete answer I can write:

For model paints there's several factors.

Finish - most people want a matte finish. Glossy finishes look more like a plastic toy. (Yes they are plastic toys, but they want to look real.)

Pigment - finer pigments are more expensive but mean a smoother layer and more consistent color. You also want an opaque pigment to ensure the color is as true as possible. Cheaper paints are more translucent.

Drying time - you usually want your paint to dry faster so you dont accidentally smudge the paint while its wet

Thickness - you want as thin a paint as possible.

Overall, I think Citadel/Warhammer paints are decent paints and aren't THAT expensive in the US. The price quoted presumably includes free shipping. If you buy on their site it's only $3.87 a pot but you need to pay shipping separately, so if you're buying 3 or more it gets a lot cheaper fast. You can also go to a Warhammer store where they will sell it to you at that price with no shipping required.

That said, Citadel containers are the worst. Some of their whites dry up way too quick, and they really lack options to buy bulk sets.

I think there's valid complaints against Citadel paints, but disagree with anyone who says the paint is "the worst" and I think anyone who says it's $10 CAD a pot isn't showing the full picture.

16

u/sriversage 19h ago

There's more to paint than pigment, most importantly the medium. This wouldn't work unfortunately.

17

u/Konvexen 19h ago

Ok but to be fair Citadel paints are overpriced.

You can absolutely get better paints for cheaper than Citadel prices.

15

u/Khanon555 18h ago

Also to be fair, they are manufactured in the uk.

Where people spend there money can be a factor for some.

Not calling them cheap by any means :)

9

u/CT-96 19h ago

It depends. For generic colours, you can absolutely buy paints from other brands like Tamiya or Army Painter. But Citadel also has some specific stuff that's harder to find or make yourself like their textured paints and shading glosses.

A respectable vintage professional trumpet, a used kind of ok Chinese Euphonium, or the worlds worst tuba.

56

u/angrath 20h ago

As someone looking to buy my son a tuba - how do I do it?? They seem to be priced all over the place!

93

u/oryci 19h ago

Find a local tuba instructor and ask them what they recommend based on your budget. Don’t assume that you can determine this on your own. Cheap horns are all over the place, they look good but play terribly. If you don’t have the experience go to someone who does.

I play sax professionally, I’m not a brass person and that’d be what I do in this situation.

13

u/Azuras_Star8 18h ago

My god a proper sax is smooth as butter.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Raja479 19h ago

What kind of tuba are you looking for? Like, a smaller one just to start them on(a 3/4 size BBb) or are you looking for a four valve horn they could take to college? Or are they looking to pursue tuba seriously?

Yamaha answers most of these and tends to hold their value. You can find them used for under $1000 for a three valve, closer to $2000-$3000 for a four valve. Then their higher end models that play in different keys can get very expensive.

A decent set of irons. Been playing a hand me down set of clubs from age 14 to 34. Bought a used but newer driver from a friend, and got a really nice putter from my father. Dad won the putter from a raffle, but he's left handed and doesn't play golf anymore anyways. My 3 wood and 5 wood are still from the old hand me downs, as well as my wedges except for a lob wedge that I found in the woods.

Friend gave me his old irons and a random 4 hybrid since they actually fit my height, but they are from the 90s as well. My job rewards high performance with points I can spend in an online store, but after doing the math, a free set of Calloway irons will take "top 5" performances every month for about 3 years. I'm actually going for it to save all this money but still get new and current clubs.

Naturally, my idiot golfing self believes that these clubs will lower my scores from mid 90's to mid 80's. One day, no matter what, I will own a new set of clubs only played by me.

Good leather is expensive

Not personally into that scene, but if you want high quality custom leather, you're easily looking at hundreds of dollars per piece.

There is a whole spectrum out there. Want stuff that looks the part but can't really play the part? (Think clothing that is pleather or some plastic-derivative, restraints that wouldn't hold up to a person really trying to get out.) That's fairly cheap. You could outfit a whole party with a thousand dollars.

Now if you get into the other end of the spectrum, you might be talking custom made clothing with countless little features that can actually stand up to whatever abuses you might subject to it. You probably just increased the price by an order of magnitude. Now it's one person can have a reasonably well outfitted kit that looks and plays the part.

In ham radio, a pretty nice radio or antenna. In birding, a pretty nice scope or plane ticket to somewhere with a bunch of birds you haven’t seen yet

Ammo... Lots of ammo Soni could practice and compete more. Steel Challenge, Rimfire challenge, and pcsl are my hobbies and that would get me a few months.

A used canon 5dMk4 and 50mm ef1.8 , heck you’d even have enough left for a decent flash or strobe . Would blow you away.

I could get a couple of the kitchen tools I want! Or one nice chess table. Or the camping gear I want.

If I actually had $1k to spare I would go with the latter at this very moment.

Honestly a decent amount- I’d get a CZ p10c with a Holosun, a holster, ear pro, glasses, and the rest on ammo

A kick in the ass from my wife.

3

u/phonomancer 16h ago

I'm sure you could get that for free if you don't want to spring for the premium ass-kicking.

Scale modeling. All the tools you need including an airbrush and compressor and a year worth of kits and paints (or two or three years worth if you build at a casual or considered pace)
