It's Commodore 64 launch day

Pinpointing what day the C-64 launched is surprisingly difficult. In this blog post, I make the case for September 1, 1982. And then its continued success into the early 1990s surprised even Commodore. So, happy 44th birthday, C-64. https://dfarq.homeip.net/commodore-64-released-september-1-1982/

Another Commodore 1902A Monitor with cold solder joints at positions 12 and 18, causing the flyback transformer to cut out (no high voltage). Saw this on YouTube a couple times; thrilled it was such an easy fix

Mini Office on the Commodore 64

Post image
120 Upvotes

Doing a little bit of office work in-between playing games on this rainy Saturday afternoon.

I picked up this 1985 Mini Office tape from Summit's 299 range for £1 in a Cash Converters recently.

Did anyone actually use this software in their business back in the day?

Nostalgia meets 3D Design

Bit of a nostalgic throwback tonight......

Going through storage to get some camping equipment out and came across my old Commodore 64,

Those who are not old enough to know what they are...... imagine a life before mobile phones, playstations or even WiFi, When you had to walk down the street and ask your friends mam if they were allowed to play out before the street lights went off,

The pinnacle of of computers in the early 80s,

8 bit....Playing games from a cassette tape (oh, howay, you can't be that young to not know what they are as well) and waiting 2 hours for pacman to load up then "crashing" because there wasn't enough storage 😏

Give me a bit nostalgia so decided to design these lil keyrings (and some other bits) that will be 3D printed tomorrow 👌🏽.....my god, Just saying that on a commodore post feels so weird.

Commodore Should Create the C65 as a New Platform

Commodore owns the C65 IP. I don't think that they would even try to integrate the Mega-65 into the product line. Instead, I would expect them to move forward with the C65 as designed by Commodore and release it with modern options.

This would likely render the Mega65 and the C65 as different machines. As much as people think the two are the same, the MBA in me says it won't likely happen. The only reason that the Ultimate happened was the benefit for both parties and Gideon sticking to the origional roms and keeping the core system a C64.

That is not the case with the Mega-65. From what information is available, Mega-65 software won't run on an origional C65. Maybe Commodore will decide to run the C65 on completely different hardware. The Mega 65 is certainly out of the sweetspot for most Commodore fans, even though a Mister can be purchased for less than $200 USD. The mister can run far more complex cores than the the C65 and the Mega-65.

My best guess is that Commodore will go back to the well and design a C65 based on the origional specs. The could also add a C64 core instead of the C65 compatibility mode as well. Finally add an IDE to pimp C64 games to be upgraded on the C65 with better graphics and sound.

This would create a new eco system that would eventually spawn new software as well. Giving Commodore a future. Something they currently lack. With a logo like "8 Bits is enough" they could create a realm that nobody would or could compete with. With enahanced CPU speeds, new or upgraded software could demonstrate that the classics can truely attract both old and new fans.

This is my quirky vintage Commodore International watch. For me, it captures the excitement of early home computing innovation. Everything was cutting edge!

Imagine that, in the 1990s, somebody told you that Commodore would still be selling brand new Commodore 64s in 2026.

The longest-selling computer of all time, indeed.

If it became sort of a periodic thing to make a new commodore “special edition” like the C77u, what other versions/themes would you like to see?

The obvious one given Perfractic’s personal fandom is a KITT64CU: All black with an LED strip to replicate the scanner light thing. Maybe even use RGB to replicate the “talking” lights on the dashboard. ships with a KITT soundboard program. Use the 64C case, and put down shiny polished black panels on the top.

🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥

Another (very dumb) idea that amuses me is a C64U Jazz edition. A C64U based on the “jazz” styrofoam cup design. You know the one. 🤪

Any other ideas?

1902A - Operating characteristics (heat, smell)

I have a 1902A that wasn't powered on in ~20 years. 6 months ago, I replaced the power switch. When powering it on, the picture would display perfectly for 3-4 seconds, then the screen would shut off; the red light indicator would remain on, but the CRT would totally not fire (truly dead screen, not just "blank"). I was going to formally try to diagnose it tonight, and voila, on the first try, it stayed on and displayed a beautiful picture. But it's been a long time since I operated one of these "new" or had a basis of comparison. So I guess my questions are:

  • Is the top/back of the case normally a little warm after it's been powered on a few minutes?
  • If you put your face/nose up to the top vents, do you smell a little ozone, or at the very least, something electrical?

On the second point, there is a smell, but I wouldn't call it "ozone"; it's definitely more the smell of firing something up that's accumulated some dust. However, the PCB and internals looked very clean when I inspected it, so I'm honestly just not sure what's normal. If anyone has a well-cared for 1902A or at least one that's 100% in operating spec, I'd love to know about the more esoteric sensory experience of it being powered, haha.

Still very scared now that there's an intermittent fault that's going to cause some kind of cascading problem later. I have an IR camera, but I imagine those are less useful with CRTs.

Commodore 77 use cases

What do people think are the use cases for the upgraded Commodore 77's specs?

I'm not throwing shade, and I'm by no means retro-tech savvy, so this is a completely genuine question: what can you do with the C77 that you can't do with the C64 Ultimate, and is there any real, practical benefit?

Really curious what people more knowledgable than me think about this.

Commodore at GamesCom 2026

So as some of you may know, GamesCom is the largest computer/video game convention in the world, currently happening in Germany. I was extremely surprised to learn that not only does Commodore have a presence there, but holy smokes... well, here is a video (German narration, sorry):

They really went all in.
