Throughout antiquity, portraits of The Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus have been a staple of classical art and almost a Rite of Passage for traditional painters, with renditions by everyone from Raphael to William Adolphe-Bouguereau. Personally, Bouguereau’s version, coupled with his La Pieta are two of my favorite religious arts ever because of the glaring similarities offset by the subtlest tonal and emotional shifts. That said, I had to do a take on the subject for the series: most times Mary and Jesus are portrayed solo, but I thought it would be resplendent to have angels protecting and covering the mother and child; both of whom look on with power and calm.
Traditionally, women of time period and region might wear a particular headdress or otherwise some head covering, which would also be typical for a Madonna piece—but we celebrate black hair here, so exceptions will always be made. I dont want the series to necessarily be filled with pop culture, but certain figures will be making appearances within very select contexts—the fun is in knowing who and why. It was a journey figuring out what elements would be included or excluded but they opened the door for more options in upcoming pieces…!

Jackie gets a redesign in the second issue (now funding on Kickstarter) mostly because it can be too dang hard to draw at times! This week's album cover pose was one of those times! 

Sorry if this is a bit macabre. But you gotta admit a colonizer's skull mounted on your lawn would get your point across with great effect.

The character you see here actually got her start as a crude sculpture I modeled in clay and then painted with acrylics. I wanted to render her in a medium I'm more skilled at than modeling clay.

I swear I have other characters but since she’s the main character, I’ve been drawing her a lot lately :3

To give a short summary of my story:

Princess Jewelle is given various tasks to help her kingdom and other civilizations around the world which range from famine to fighting off magic users that harm people. all the while, bigger evils lurk in the shadows…

This is Veshrin, a character for a story I'm working on, he is a shape changer and is, in the eyes of the religion that seeks his destruction, in a role similar to Lucifer so I felt I needed to make him beautiful. Done in CSP On the iPad, in four or five hours.

When I designed those cop characters a couple of arcs ago I thought "They looks so funny, I have to find a way to use them again!" This is perfect role for them as modern American policing has its roots in the slave catchers and overseers.

This flashback arc is gonna be a long one, but a fun thing has been using it to bring back some old designs as ancestors of present characters.

is a big part of Uppity, so in this Civil war period arc I wanted to make sure to have some slave song representation.

Concept art for a pair of Egyptian warrior characters I designed for a game dev program called GameGen which I've been participating in this year. The man, whom I've named Kahotep, is actually recycled from an earlier project which was a simple Mario-style platformer I made with Construct 3. My initial thought was to retool him for a more advanced game I could eventually make in the Unreal engine, but then I remembered a recent article reporting that ancient Egyptian princesses may have actually used weapons of war buried with them and so made a gender-flipped version named Khenmet.

Finally did a full body drawing of my sona/mascot, Devihashi aka Nao!

When doing these recent marker drawings, I used photos of models I follow on Instagram as reference for the poses and anatomy. My goal is to get a bit better at human anatomy by use image references when I draw.
