I'm on my 3rd job. I started off at my first job 3 years ago and despised it completely. I left within 10 months and landed another role for about 20 months and didn't get a raise so I started looking elsewhere.

I just started my 3rd job and am going to stay 2 years at the minimum, but am concerned about the same thing happening. Sometimes a subfield which might have seemed interesting turns out to be miserable, or maybe I run into a case of the 2nd job where I get literally zero raises or promotions.

I get that I'm supposed to show some loyalty, but I'm not really willing to abuse myself that much. At my 2nd role, I knew senior engineers there with 10+ years of experience making sub-100k in a HCOL area. It's just ridiculous.

I am a PLC/controls engineer that’s about 2.2 years out of school. I was at company A for 1.5 years and I’ve been at company B since I left company A. My first job was long hours, crazy chaotic, either no work or 80+ hours of work. My current job is a glorified PM job, where most of my plant support is basically IT or parts ordering. I was promised lots of technical projects while interviewing and I have proposed several drive/control upgrades that have been delayed till “past 2027” due to a merger and just budget choices from the people above me (typical). I want to know if I’m crazy or justified in wanting to leave? I worry that I am hurting my skill development / career development if I continue on. I received an excellent review from my boss and he is impressed by my work but I just feel it’s too easy and I can already see the ceiling. I mentioned having a path set to move towards a management role but was told that they wouldn’t want my skills to leave the engineering department due to how successful I’ve been. Will this hurt my career to look to leave now or should I hold out and make the change after some more time?

When I was a kid in the '70s, I had a digital voltmeter with an interesting readout.

Each digit was represented by a spinning drum, with the numbers 0-9 printed on it. When I applied voltage to the test leads, the least significant digit would spin furiously, and every time it completed a rotation, the next value digit would increase. And continuing on to the most significant digit, until it displayed the final value. A fascinating process to watch! 

The only comparison I can think of would be a mileage marker on a bicycle. Separate drums, one digit connected to the next digit, cascading to indicate the proper value.

I remember the least significant digit would sometimes 'wobble' between values, hunting for the proper position. I think this means the display drums provided feedback to a bridge, trying to match the applied voltage.

As people often do, I thought it was interesting, and it disappeared from my collection after a year or two. Now, much older, I wish I had kept it for it's uniqueness.

I am a CE who just graduated in June, focusing on grid modernization software & power systems. I had an internship that ran from the day after graduation until the end of August. No return offer so I am unemployed now. I have had one interview so far after ~60 applications (I think most I am waiting to hear back on since they are more recent, interview was around my 15th application).

I am scheduled to take the FE in the middle of September, but what do I do after that? Any particular project focuses that will be most valuable?

Would appreciate any input on what I can best use my time for right now

Hi guys, i'm not an engineer, just a technician. For the longest time i have had trouble getting an intuitive grasp around the basics of circuits: voltage, capacitors, inductors, etc. Then i read about the Force-Voltage mechanical analogy and suddenly it all made sense: Charge being analogous displacement, current to velocity, voltage to force, capacitor to spring, inductor to inertial mass, resistor to friciton/dampener. Suddenly the behaviour of the components made intuitive sense.

Then i read about the Force-Current analogy, and now i am lost again. Current acting as a force? Voltage as velocity? Magnetic Flux as displacement? Capacitance as mass? I am lost again.

Does that analogy make sense? Is there an intuitive way to understand it?

This is my first semester where I have been given access through my school to free apps on any desk. I know Revit and AutoCAD are the like the main ones; are there any others that are worth spending significant time on?

Hi I'm in an undergrad processor architecture class that's covering risc cpus and I was wondering what part of the architecture in arm cortex cpus make them more power efficient than a typical x86 cpu like your Intel and amd chips. I asked my professor and he more or less told me that it's how arm based processors use a combination of 16b and 32b instruction sets vs x86 using all 32b instructions but just wanted a bit more clarification and explanation on the topic. Im on my second year of my bachelor's right now and a project lead for IEEE at my school, what is the best advice that you can give?

I’m an electrical engineering student currently on a co-op entering my third year. I love what I’m learning in school and I’ve always envisioned myself doing something rigorous and having a proud title like engineer.

However, for probably a year now I’ve been having turmoil about the thought of working as an engineer for the rest of my life.

Now that I’ve been working all summer and will continue through the semester, it pretty much confirmed my doubts. I hate working a typical 9-5 in the office sitting at a computer. My current co-op is pretty great objectively; I get to run test on expensive hardware, I’m running my own design project from start to finish (the exact thing I wanted to do originally that made me choose EE), and a bunch of other stuff. It’s a solid view if my future career. I don’t hate it but I’m just not happy working a job like this for years on end.

I know it’s shallow to complain about great job security and pay, but I just don’t know what to do. I’m gonna finish my degree it’s just hard for me to swallow my pride and not be an engineer, especially if it pays less. I just can’t imagine myself doing anything less than that, which I know is an issue on my side.

I want a less technical career, specifically I would love to teach or lead. But getting my PhD and fighting to become a teaching professor is not any better, and a high school teacher has different struggles that make me hesitant. On top of it I’m getting married at the end of the year so when I graduate it’s not like I can go run off and jump between jobs and do something crazy, I need a tangible career with a proper trajectory.

I just feel lost and would love to hear some thoughts. Currently I’m a president of a student org at my church and I love it because I drive our organizational growth and community engagement by directing student outreach, running events, managing administrative operations, and representing the group externally. This type of role gives me passion and I’m not sure if there’s a career like this out there, especially with my degree. I’ve looked at some director jobs like director of student affairs and what not but I’m unsure.

Any thoughts are welcomed, sorry for the long post 😅. Long story short I don’t want to be stuck at a computer I want something that engages me and every day is different. Has anyone gone through something similar? It’s hard for me to drop engineering from my life but I don’t think a typical career in it will make me happy.

im a first year electrical eng student at a pretty prestigious university in north america. my fall semester last year was pretty tough. i managed to scrape by but then in my 2nd semester my study habits got very flimsy, was feeling super burnt out, mental health was declining, which in result had me to repeat the entire 2nd semester. the rule for my uni is if you fail more than 2 courses, you have to repeat the semester. this not only delayed my grad by a year, but overall derailed my journey of graduating on time with my other peers.

what kills me the most is that only 2-3 students in my class ended up in the same situation as me. which means chances of me failing would have been quite low, but i still managed to hit rock bottom. some advisors told me to
consider looking at other eng, but i really feel committed to my current one and am currently pushing through. i just finished 3 out of my 7 courses during the summer semester and will be back again in the fall with the new freshmen

overall, my morale seems to not be getting any better. maybe this is the result of being a high achiever throughout my life until university. maybe this won’t seem like a big deal after i finally graduate, but right now i feel i don’t belong in my class at all :,)

I am building a circuit where the motor (represented by 1kOhm resistor) is controlled by a 5V signal. The given circuit functions properly, however when comparing to other H-Bridges I saw on the internet I noticed some differences and am thinking is there something wrong here?

im a first year ece student . Before jumping into any specific domain,What are the most important basics I should learn first?. for ex mathematics , basic electronics, programing etc .

Is there a common foundation that will make it easier to explore different ECE domains later? Also, what would you recommend learning during the first year?

I was just given news I didn’t get the internship that I interviewed for. Interview went awesome I thought. The only thing they said was the lack of autocad experience. I have experience in multiple other cad softwares including solidworks, which is harder than autocad in my opinion. Is it really that competitive? How do I market myself to let these interviewers know that this stuff is really damn easy for me, and not having experience in a specific software (that I could learn in a couple days, beyond what they probably use it for) shouldn’t be a reason to pick someone else?

I’m trying and failing to not take this personally! I’ve been jaded in this job market ever since I was laid off, a few months prior to deciding to go get a degree in EE.

This a simple chat bot i built, which responds to Jarvis.

It built in a complicated way, and its not quite smart, BUT, you can have conversations with it.

It is my understanding as per BS 7671 that metalwork is either an exposed consecutive part or an extraneous metallic part, not both.

If it's exposed, it typically gets a CPC. If it's extraneous, it typically gets an equipotential bond.

E.g., exposed metal casing of an electrical appliance gets a cpc. Metal pipe or steelwork gets an equipotential bond.

Is there ever a scenario where something would get both a CPC and an equipotential bond (as in the two as separate connections)?

What about in a substation?

Ignition coil with ballast resistor (1.7ohm), 5 pin relay, 12V battery, proximity switch and 12V motor with a hex nut to trigger the proximity switch.

Please suggest any working hardware circuits for an AM transmitter which works at 800kHz. I tried few circuit designs with 555 timer and opamp it works perfectly in simulation but in real hardware I couldn't get the desired output. It is okay if the circuit is transistor and LC tank based too.

So I am currently in my undergrad last semester from a third world country. I'd like to pursue my masters degree abroad with aids and scholarships. So as i was about to explore options (yup the visa problem is acknowledged) we are required to pick our elective courses for the next semester. My undergrad thesis is in the field of implantable antenna design but i haven't worked much on it yet. And I'm also unsure if i want to continue with implantable antenna in my masters. I'm a bit interested in embedded systems but i just have a quite medium level project on smart access control system implementing esp32 with a web server to grant any requested access with live streaming along with a manual password rfid card access and probably a position on our departments line follower car competition. However the elective course situation needs to be sorted first. I'm attaching my available options below.

I acquired an old spectrometer and wanted to hook it up to its respective PCI card for talking to a computer. unfortunately one end is db25, the other is dc37 and the cable is unobtanium. so i crimped my own :>

i bought crimp db25/dc37 connectors and a metal shell and then sacrificed a DVI cable which gave me just barely enough conductors to make it work. and it does work!
