Website- https://malvannyc.com/
Location: Carroll Gardens. Closest subway is the F/G at Smith-9th (5 minute walk or so)
This is a new, excellent spot from the same owner/chef as the Goan place Indian Table nearby in Cobble Hill. They serve Malvani food, a subset of Maharashtrian food from Konkan. In short, a lot of dried coconut and a heavy mix of spices. Favorite dishes were the amazing Khekdyache Kalwan/Crab Curry, which had a ton of softshell crab, and the Sabudana Wadi/Tapioca Patty, which had nice spices and a good texture, but all were tasty. They also have good cocktails and have a good-looking thali menu for brunch
List of dishes, photos (descriptions from website,) and a mini-review of each
'1. Khekdyache Kalwan- Crab curry with a complex blend of toasted coconut paste/vatan, Malvani masala, tamarind, and kokum syrup. $35. Tons of softshell crab and quite spicy. Easily my favorite.
2, 13, and 14. Sabudana Wadi- Tapioca pearls patty served with a green coconut chutney. $12. Nice textures with a thick chutney.
Kolambiche Dangar- Crispy, rustic shrimp cutlet, fresh grated coconut, mashed potato, minced onions, rice flour, Malvan spices, and fresh herbs served with green chutney. $15. Couldn't taste the shrimp due to the heavy spices, but a fun texture.
Kombdi Vade- A Malvan delicacy consisting of chicken prepared with a dry coconut/Kopra paste, special coastal spice blend Malvani Masala, served with a multigrain puffed puri variant "Vade." $32. The original, less sweet version of Xacutti with a bit more sourness. Tender chicken. Bread on the side was slightly dry, but went with the dish
Shagoti- Wild mushrooms slow-cooked with roasted fennel seed, star anise, poppy seed, coconut, and tamarind. $30. Very mushroomy dish, but tasty.
Mix of all mains + sides/rice
Ambe Mohar- A fragrant, short-grain rice known for its distinctive mango-like aroma. $6. They also had regular rice for the same price. Not super fragrant/we really only needed one.
Puran Polli- Bread filled with chickpea, coconut jaggery, and cardamom. $5. Not as sweet as I expected. Nice to go with the chicken and crab
Fanas/Jackfruit- Yellow turmeric root infused vodka, jackfruit cordial, passionfruit, yellow chartreuse, and prosecco. $18. Nice mix of sourness and sweetness.
Taandul/Rice- Sous vide toasted ambe mohar rice bourbon, coconut jaggery, cardamom bitters, and smoked coconut husk. $19. They smoked it at the table. Had a tiny taste/reminded me of a subtley smokey/coconut flavored old-fashioned.

Used the search feature and couldn’t find anything, what should I get as someone who’s never been.

Hi, I just moved here and one of my favorite food from back home was supă cu găluște, an almost chicken noodle soup like dish that contains a light broth, vegetables, and semolina dumplings. I’m Romanian and Serbian and grew up eating all my dad’s food that he would make, but I can’t find a good place here that sells it. My problem mainly is that supă cu găluște is techechally a Hungarian dish, and I can’t find it at any Hungarian restaurants!!! Help me!!!

Should we go to L’Artusi even at a less than ideal time or Il Buco? Il Bucos menu looked a little limited and not overly appealing but the ambience looks amazing. Which should we go to?

I can’t keep driving to Astoria every time I want an Italian sandwich. My allegiance to Sal, Kris and Charlie’s is literally ruining my life. I need a quick fix or a shortlist from you wonderful people because I am too insatiable to really long-game this one from scratch.
Where do you get your personal best italian sandwich?
THANK YOU..

Long-time downtown resident. Have always wanted to know where the great produce/fish/grocery stops are in Chinatown. Focused on bringing home to cook vs eating out. Can y'all help?

Planning a birthday dinner for my husband - we loved Frevo! I'm trying to find another tasting menu option - I was planning on either Huso, Luthun, Saga or even Manhatta but they are all closed on Tuesday evenings. What's another must tasting menu? No Korean or Veg only.
I came across L'Abeille, Essential, The Modern Kitchen Table and Cesar.. Wondering if any of them are worth booking for an amazing dinner?? Or any other recommendations would be great!
*update - I'd like to stay under $300 if possible (for menu only - before tax/tip) but will spend more if it's worth it!

Location can be any of the 5 boroughs and price can be any tier.
Scallops can be raw or cooked, truly either is fine, but please NOT FRIED!
Prefer AYCE, made to order, rather than a buffet where items are sitting out for an unknown amount of time.
Prefer jumbo sea scallops vs small bay scallops but quality matters most in this case :)
The two options we've come up with already are Crab House or Sushi Hayashi - if you have any comments on either of their scallop offerings, I'm all ears!
Thank you in advance!

Went about a month ago and can’t stop thinking about the meal. The eggplant dip (Mirza Qasemi) with trout roe and a soft boiled egg…my mouth automatically waters just looking at the photo!
The lamb ribs were so succulent and fell right off the bone & the date sauce added the perfect amount of sweetness.
The Kabob Koobideh…woahhh just amazing!!! I now understand the hype and cannot wait to return to try the Ghomeh.
Cocktails were also creative + delicious and we had the saffron ice cream at the end, which was perfect and worth $16. I thought everything was well priced.

As someone who regular goes to fine dining institutions and have relationships with many restaurants through the city, it seems that Atomix is the one high end institution that does not reward regular repeat diners with a simpler booking process. I have dined with the restaurant multiple times and celebrated a few life milestones with them but have been told that no further assistance would be offered in securing future reservations. I was wondering if anyone in this sub is a regular at Atomix and is able to avoid their Tock booking process. Basically, is it me or is does Atomix strictly adheres to a free and fair process through Tock exclusively?

I am visiting my daughter the week before Thanksgiving and leaving late on Wednesday. I am looking for somewhere that serves American comfort food like turkey and gravy. I saw a similar post 3 years ago, so I know about Cafe 82. Any other suggestions? She lives in Brooklyn so places in that area would work too.

hi everyone! i'm planning a very special birthday trip and would love to snag a good place to have dinner our first night in the city (Friday 10/2)
we will be staying near/around Penn Station since our bus stop is nearby that area but are super open to anywhere accessible on the subway for a group of 6!
my budget between all of us total would be around ~$550? Not looking to spend more than $30 per entree if possible.
Elegance doesnt matter to me as much as atmosphere. We want to get some cocktails, enjoy each others company and possibly hit up ktown for drinks after! I'd love a Vietnamese or good American spot but I love all asian cuisines/fusion and itialian! I appreciate all of your help in advance!
I've had these on my list... are they worth?:
- LenLen
- Malii Gramercy
- Valeria
- Soothr
- Fish Cheeks (been, loooooove the vibe and food there)
- Hojokban (been, not sure if they can accommodate our party and food is up my alley!)

Looking for recs for a restaurant for two person intimate meal to celebrate a 30th birthday. Favorite cuisines include Mediterranean/middle eastern and Japanese. Budget is flexible but since it’s a big one open to spending at most 80-100 pp.

I usually go to Gran Castillo de Jagua for Dominican and Puerto Rican food, which I absolutely love, but they don’t have tostones de pana. I’m craving good and fresh tostones de pana like my abuela used to make for me and my siblings and I’m genuinely struggling to find them (and what I have found hasn’t been fresh).
Also open to other recs for comida criolla in northern Brooklyn if you have!

Our budget is ~$150pp. Has anyone had a recent experience at any of these and can vouch for one?

Its been over a decade since I've lived in NYC and last couple times I went back home, I had bad diner experiences. What are your favorite ones right now? Preferably ones that have been around for a while (like old, greasy spoon style), but I'll take new ones too! Anywhere in Manhattan or BK or Queens.
Coming back for a few weeks and on the hunt.
EDIT: Not only did I get some really great recommendations, this thread sparked a flood of memories!
Thanks everyone.

I have celiac disease and I have to have a few procedures done to test for other GI issues. My GI doctor asked me to do a gluten challenge and is on board with this. I am going to be incredibly sick either way so I want to taste real food for once. I am planning a trip to NYC to do a pizza crawl. Not from NYC so looking for some recommendations and travel help. I have had John’s of Bleeker before and am fine with whole pie shops but would prefer slice shops to try as many different places as possible. Don’t care about locations across the city as I’m fine traveling to any of the 5 Burroughs. Obviously a pro if they were close enough I didn’t have to travel for 1+ hours between them. If you could only do 5-7 shops in a day where would you go and what slice would you get? Where would you start and in which order would you travel in to get there?
TLDR: glu-tard looking to enjoy pizza for a day or 2. Help a guy out with recs
