Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.

TLDR: YES

actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.

It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.

What do you expect from a fraternity?

I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.

  1. You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...

  2. Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.

If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.

If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...

Rushing a Social Fraternity

Answer these questions:

  1. What interests do I have?
  2. Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?

1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.

2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.

Misc. Advice

  1. You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
  2. It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
  3. Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.

How fraternity life has affected me

My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Megathread Frat. Or Not Frat.

Since y'all like shitposting asking if random things from water beds to which New Balances are frat, here's the place to do it.

We've turned down the frequency of these posts from weekly to monthly. This way it doesn't clutter up the sub.

Frat Stuff How bad is hazing at certain schools?

I’m a high school Senior starting college apps. And I know I wanna rush. How’s hazing at schools like VT and UMD, or even smaller schools like Bucknell or Temple? Is it worse than a lax locker room?

Serious I’m in a gay fraternity, what should I do?

Upvotes

Like 13 dudes in the past 6 months have come out and 5 of them are dating. 1 of the couples is a throuplet.

Anyway, they all just talk about glory holes and white wine and nothing else. It’s like they became new people. They used to just be kinda boring and just talk about work and sports.

Anyway the president tried to make pledges walk in the pride parade and we lost like 21 dudes. Our chapter is low key falling apart.

Instead of littles and bigs, it’s bigs and littles you know what i mean?

I go to a horizon league school in the Midwest

Serious Brother can’t control himself

Need some advice. Last night a brother at our party just yelled at me for like 5 minutes straight and then swung and hit me across the face just because I was standing next to our dj at the dj stand. This isn’t even the first time he’s put his hands on me for making up bullshit problems just because he gets angry when he’s drunk. All I did was stand next to the dj and he was on my ass because he built the stand so he can decide where I stand at a party??? My frat doesn’t even care about it and it’s not the first time he’s told me he wants to kill me over some joke of a problem so I’m wondering what you guys think I should do. All of this was in front of rushes and girls btw

Serious AIO My frat put me as an alumni without asking me after only being in for a 2 years and not graduated.

Hello all I’m not gonna lie I’m a a little salty (i’m using a burner account cus my main is known) so due to my school messing up my student aid I had to sit A SEMESTER out not even a full year but at the first meeting 2 weeks ago when I ask why the meeting wasn’t started ( i thought with me we had quorum) they told me that they already filed me as an alumni without me knowing or giving a reason so I didn’t count i even check on our membership database and it was changed. am I wrong for feeling kinda salty about it I’m the only blk dude in my southern chapter so theirs already been talks about what is and isn’t ok but I have never felt so much distance from my chapter as when they told me that and don’t even know what to do fr do I just put my letters down. I checked and they didn’t need yo do this since i was only gonna be gone the semester.

PS i made it extremely clear that i still wanted to be active as a collegiate brother so idk why they decided to do that

Edit: I didn’t leave my school entirely dual enrolled at the local community college cus my main collage has a program there so for all instance and purposes I have all the other student privileges but no classes to pay I did it this way because I wanted to stay collegiate I check the school system and I still have student status

Rush Advice Reaching out to another chapter

Hi all. I recently transferred schools and found out that another school in my area has a chapter. Would it be possible for me to get involved again? If so, what would be the best way to reach out?

Rush Advice What are the real benefits of joining a fraternity at a Big Ten school?

I go to Michigan State University, a large Big Ten school, and I’m considering rushing this semester. Greek life here seems bigger with sororities than fraternities, and it feels like we only have around four fraternities that are considered really popular.

For those who joined a fraternity, how did it benefit you? Did it help socially, with meeting women, networking, career opportunities, or finding a genuine friend group?

Also, how many fraternities should I visit in one day and throughout rush overall? Should I explore as many as possible or focus on three or four?

I’m a transfer student mainly looking to build a real social circle and become more involved on campus. I’d appreciate any advice or things you wish you knew before rushing.

Ps I had a interview with one frat in the summer and reached out to a few others already

Serious Brown racism

It’s frustrating how people say that minorities who feel excluded should just assimilate more, when sometimes you genuinely try to do exactly that and people still won’t give you a chance. I’m a brown dude who’s competed in sports, assumes the best in people, and genuinely tries to get to know everyone. If a frat doesn’t vibe with me during rush, I’m completely chill with that—I’m not expecting everyone to like me. But it’s frustrating when some white brothers won’t even give you the time of day, while the frats that are actually welcoming and make an effort to get to know you tend to be the most diverse. I really like that diversity, but I also want to feel like I can assimilate and be part of a group without race being a barrier. I mean at the end of the day I j wanna have the opportunity to make friends and connections w anyone I c.

Serious Rushing and pledging as an architecture major (Cal Poly Pomona)

I’m gonna post this to both frat and architecture just to get two differnt perspectives but I wanted to post here mostly due to my concerns and the reasons of why I’m thinking about rushing. Rush starts next week and I’m an architecture student at a BARCH accredited school. I’d say I’m a pretty good student my projects from last year and this year both got picked as one of the better projects of the studios, I do and understand my work but I also work a lot. That would be a problem. The fraternity I’m trying to rush would be sigma chi, their pledge process isn’t the longest about five weeks and the material seems not too bad. My concern is being able to rush pledge and be in a fraternity while being in such a Time consuming major such as architecture. I want to join because it would be a place to let go from studio which kind of restricts me from really having an amazing social life so one of the pros would be if have one built in. A lot of the guys in the fraternity are mechanical engineers or engineers in general. Yes there are a lot of business majors but I was hoping with the lower count of guys in the fraternity and a lot of them being engineers they’d have some empathy for my work loads. I’ve gone to their parties as a PNM both last spring and this fall so I just wanted to get the perspectives of both sides also how would the networking help after graduation in terms of Sigma Chi s alumni network for architecture. Any responses would be great thanks!

Frat Stuff You can say “no” and that’s enough

If you’re at a crazy frat party, and everyone’s doing it, you have the autonomy to say no. You don’t have to engage in dangerous behavior. If you feel pressured to participate, a school with a crazy Greek-life culture isn’t the right fit for you.

Rush Advice How do you rush more than one frat

literally all of them at my school have events at the same time... I have narrowed a list of 2-3 and been to one event but they all have events during the same 2 hours and same days. plus really far from each other so I can’t spend like an hour at one then go to another. what should I do? there’s only like 6 events total per frat

school is purdue

Serious Recycling program

So I already started a recycling program for our cans and scrap metal, it is pulling in about $500/month, and so it is paying for itself. Basically pays our own social fund, as brotherhood + parties with sororities give us enough scrap metal.

I want to expand it to other things, though… I didn’t start the program for finances, I did it because I want to be more environmentally conscious… it’s just that this was aligned with house finances.

We aren’t a traditional frat, we are an ex-WWII rationing/home economics lab, so it’s moreso a cheap alternative to Greek life, and we don’t have the cash to burn.

——————

Has anyone else set up a recycling program? I go to Purdue, and I’ve struggled with figuring out how to get plastic & paper/cardboard recycling at the (essentially commercial) scale of a 60 person house.
