QUESTION Small Tube Amp Inquiry

Upvotes

Hello!

Im looking for a smaller tube amp (likely between 1-5w) and was hoping for some help from this community

I currently live with my partner and two young kids and I want to be able to let er rip when they’re not home but 98% of the time will be playing relatively quietly and don’t want the volume knob to live at 1

Only functionality that I really need are gain and reverb

Recently was told to look into a 1w Marshall head, a Marshall DSL1CR,or a fender champ/super champ

Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated!

QUESTION How do I figure out what to play on my guitar to go along with my lyrics?

Upvotes

As someone who started music through choir at school, and got to concert choir. I have no idea how to make my guitar flow with how I’m writing my lyrics. And every time I try to play something to see what sounds good. It sounds like an intro less than something going with the rhythm. Now I would say I’m an almost intermediate guitarist. I know how to practice other songs but when it comes to making my own I feel like my mind explodes with how do I get my guitar to match the energy of what I’m singing.

QUESTION Is songsterr still good?

Upvotes

Im getting back into guitar after a good 10 years. Ive played occasionally here and there. But i miss it and i have time funds now to get a whole setup. Songsterr was always the site i went to to learn songs. Are they still pretty up to par? Or has something better come out that you prefer? And why do you prefer it?

NEWBIE I want to learn!!!! Plz point me to the right direction

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I already have a guitar and I really want to learn how to play, but I’m a complete beginner and I want to teach myself.

Does anyone know any good free websites, YouTube channels, apps, or online courses that are beginner friendly and actually teach you step by step from zero?

Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks!

PURCHASE My new guitar, a Fender Lead III reissue from a few years ago

Post image
Upvotes

This has been my most-wanted guitar for a while now after playing its sibling, the Lead II, in a guitar store. I finally got one with my birthday money, and it both feels and sounds amazing. It came with 9-gauge strings, which I don't care for, but they should be easy enough to replace. Overall I'm super happy with this guitar and I plan to have it be my main one for the foreseeable future!

GEAR Is this Fender Baritone worth it vs the Squier alternative?

Upvotes

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new baritone guitar and the new Fender/Squier guitars tick all the boxes for me (yeah yeah don't crucify me over the fender controversy).

However, the Squier Jazzmaster and Fender Jaguar baritones are both quite similar.
Both are 27 inch scale offsets, both HH and both would do the job for drop F# metal stuff im going for.

The main differences tipping me towards the Fender are me preferring the jag aesthetics, higher (?) output pickups, locking tuners, nicer material neck, a heel cut, and a flatter fingerboard radius which would fit the play style more.
I've also heard the laurel fingerboard on the squiers can be super dry.

My question is, are these added things and better production quality worth it for the Fender? As it is around double the price. I do intend for this to be a long term guitar and regularly gigged.
I've linked both below:

Fender Baritone Jaguar
Squier Baritone Jazzmaster

Thanks!

QUESTION Nickel allergy; best/longest lasting strings?

Upvotes

Hi all; as the title says, I have a nickel allergy and I am looking for the general consensus on what strings people use. I’ve used Elixir Optiwebs for a few years now. While I really don’t have a big problem with them, I think I’m just looking for “greener pastures”. I know some jazz cats like using chromes, but I’ve never gotten the chance to test them out; of course, I’m a little wary because of the price tag.
So I guess I have 2 tl;dr questions

1). What do people with nickel allergies use, besides coated strings?

2). How do chromes feel for other genres besides traditional jazz playing?

Thanks!

It sounds really cool, but the bow I made sucks azz. I made it out of a piece of steel with sewing thread wrapped around it. V2 is in the works!

QUESTION Should i go with Seymour duncan SH-4'S or Fishman modern fluences

This is my schecter reaper 6 and i love the thing its been my main guitar and work horse for about almost 3 years now, but no matter what fine tuning ive done to it i cant get the tone i want out of of em, plus i get drowned out of the mix whenever i play with my band, and after trying some SH-4s on my girlfriends telecaster i've been thinking about putting some in place of my diamond decimators they came with, but ive also heard some good things about fishman modern fluences, i mostly play alot of 2000's and 90's rock and metal, probably MCR the most out of any band lately.

just trying to get an opinon since im not the most versed in the pickup market, if there are some better choices let me know but those were the two that came up most of the time as recommendations from the internet and irl friends.

Recently acquired an almost mint condition '67 Deluxe Reverb AB763. I recently got it back from servicing including a new cap job. Put a Celestion Heritage g12-65, as I wasn't a fan of the Oxford. Here's my cover of a Phish tune. I'm also using an analogman ts9 and compressor.

Hoping someone can give me some advise. What i am trying to accomplish is to use my laptop with amplitube as my pedal board with an amp. I understand the theory of bypassing the amp and cabinet in amplitube, where i am having the issues is the physical wiring and FX loop.

Hardware:

Laptop running amplitube

Guitar

focusrite scarlett 2i2

Orange 35 amp

MIDI pedalboard to control amplitube pedals.

QUESTION Green Day's Woodstock 94 guitar mix question from someone who knows nothing about mixing or guitars

im someone who has pretty much watched every Green Day show there is that i could find on YouTube and on the GreenDayCommunity archive and notice that Woodstock 94 probably has the most unique guitar tone of all of the shows I watched. The guitar tone is SUPER heavy and muddy (pun not intended) and it sounds really cool.

Just curious, really. Any guitar/mixing nerds who could explain why in a way a civilian could digest is appreciated greatly!!

QUESTION New CS54 bridge pickup too quiet?

I just installed some new Custom Shop 54 pickups into my MX Standard Strat and the bridge pickup is really quiet compared to the neck and middle. When I turn my amp way up the pickup sounds fine but even with it set much closer to the strings it’s less than half the volume of the other two pickups and much quieter than any guitar I own.

I’ve resoldered the grounds and even swapped the hot wires on my switch to rule out an issue with that component. The low volume follows the bridge no matter which joint it’s wired to and the other pickups are still fine.

It’s not my first time installing pickups and it’s a pretty straight forward install so I’m landing on there being something wrong with the pickup itself but wanted to see what the mod gurus thought before I reached out to Fender.

Thanks!

QUESTION Fingerstyle Song Recommendations

Hi, this is my first post here!

I've been playing guitar for a few years now (although I'm not nearly as good as I should be given how long I've been playing!), and I'd call myself intermediate. I learned Hozier's "Cherry Wine" a few months ago, and it's by far my favorite song to play on guitar, and I love the fact that it's easy to sing along to, since I'm not exactly a singer. I'm interested in finding other fingerstyle songs, preferably where singing and playing at the same time isn't a super huge hurdle.

Some artists/bands I like if that helps at all:

Mitski, Queen, Cavetown, Hozier, Stromae, Death Cab for Cutie, Omnipotent Youth Society (deep cut but if you know you know)

Thanks for the help!!

DISCUSSION What’s the easiest sounding song with the most deceptively difficult riff?

What riffs are harder than they sound? The typical ones you’ll hear are Snow and Every Breath You Take, those ones are notorious, almost too well known. and imo Snow sounds just as hard as it is. People also throw out Sweet Home Alabama and Smells Like Teen Spirit (played correctly) which makes sense.

I think the question you must ask yourself is what riff requires the most effort for the lowest amount of impressiveness to the general public. My vote would go to a legendary divorced dad rock riff, the harmonics intro to Blurry by Puddle of Mudd, and I’d throw in Can’t Stop, Under The Bridge, Interstate Love Song, and Drive in there.

QUESTION Can someone help me understand why the chords don't sound right?

Thumbnail youtu.be

In the comments people said the progression is E A7 G B7, but when I try to play it it doesn't sound quite right. I think they are using variations of those chords but I really can't figure it out

My guitar is in tune, and I know how to play the normal chords. Still don't sound exactly right. Any help figuring out what the chords are?

QUESTION Anyone with a pre-lawsuit/lawsuit Ibanez tele or strat, what is this piece?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

So, I was setting up this Ibanez telecaster from the early 70’s and as I was going to adjust the truss-rod, this small metal piece fell when I removed the cover lid (the cover is in the third picture). Now, I see no way to place this piece back without it looking janky, since the only way I see it fitting its bellow the nut and the cover lid, which makes the nut elevated and with an air gap, and I don’t remember if it looked janky before. Does anyone have any similar guitar with that same cover lid that can help me out here? Even just a top or side profile picture would help me understand what is going on. Because I honestly see no other use for this piece other than sitting the cover lid better and elevating the nut. The guitar might have been serviced before because it doesn’t seem to have the original nut as that also fell off without any glue residue. If anyone can help me, I’d very much appreciate it!

Edit: I forgot to say that this piece looks like a razor blade, with one side with a little ramp and the other side is somewhat flat.

QUESTION What is the cheapest way to fix this?

I got it a couple years ago and I went to get a pickup replacement and they said they couldn’t do it because the body was damaged. How do I fix this?
