Looking for amp recommendations? Start here!

If you'd like help finding an amp, we need a few details on what exactly you want out of your new amplifier. Bass amp help is welcome too!

Country/Region

It's a great help to know where you are located, some amp brands may be more expensive. Amp brands from one continent tend to be more expensive in another because of shipping, and vice versa. No need to get too specific and dox yourself.

Budget

How much are you looking to spend? Do you wanna buy a used amp, or brand new?

Genre/Style

What are you going to use the amp for? Does it need a clean channel and/or high gain?

Volume & Size Requirement

Let us know if you're trying not to bother neighbours, if you're trying to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer, or if you need the flexbility to do both! Also include if you'd prefer combo vs head & cab, if you can only haul a 1x12 or if you're trying to crank a full stack, etc.

Feel free to include other details like if you need the amp to have built in fx, digital vs solid state vs tube vs hybrid amp, whatever else will help us find you the right amp!

AMP PHOTO What are people’s thoughts on Egnater amps?

My latest rig, a Renegade head, two 2x12 Tourmaster cabs, swapped out 2 of the Elite 80s for two Vintage 30s in an X formation. I almost never hear anything about these amps. What’s the consensus on these? Aside from being fairly heavy, they seem like a very versatile amp for the price you can obtain them.

A Video doesn’t do the sound justice but it’s really amazing sounding when dialed in and I’m in it for only around $350 USD total

I run these in stereo along with a Mr. Black double tracker. With a little delay, I get a wall that Al ost sounds like 4 guitars.

Yes, I have two GT1 multis. I loved the first one so much, that when it started failing I went and bought another one. I also have the Boss GT1B but it's not in the photo.

15w? 25w? 30w? 50w tube amp?

Post image

I just sold my 6505 120w from peavey because it wa WAYYY too powerful for my use and awful to transport I research to replace it with something lighter in watts and weight, I play hardcore and it seems that evh 5150iii throw some heavy sht but i'm unsure on the power I plan to play small shows in bars and small venues, so am I damned to take a 30-50w or a 15 would do the job and is EVH the brand to look for ultimately ? I heard good about engl fireball25 too but other than them not so much smaller amp that seems to be recurrent

HELP Marshall SV20H or Anagram Darkglass

Upvotes

Hello all,

I am considering getting a Plexi style amp. My maximum budget is around £900. I am split between a SV20H and a good modelling solution, most probably an anagram darkglass considering all the hype around it. I am just worried that I will not be satisfied wirh the tones I'll get from it. Note that I have a very good reactive load/attenuator/reamping soluyion so it won't be an issue to tame the amp. I also have 4x12 cab with greenbacks. Any advice would be much appreciated 👍 Has anyone have any experience in comparing a Plexi with darkglass?

Newbie deciding amp vs modeler guitar journey

I’m a noob and just getting started. I have a very varied music taste but I would put myself more on the metal spectrum of things. I am just going to be playing at home (I have a pretty good sound insulated room in my basement where I can play loud). As I am in the beginning of my journey I am trying to be smart about in what gear I acquire - I definitely care about getting the right tone for the right moment, and I know a lot of people suggest you to just play with whatever cheap guitar and cheap amp and just practice - I definitely get a lot of joy in getting the sounds of my favorite albums etc. I am currently playing on a Boss Katana 50 which sounds alright but I always feel that something is missing with it, even if it’s pretty awesome and easy to use So my question is do I go in the direction of:

  1. Getting a Tone Master Pro / Quad Cortex and the FR12 cab which can generate pretty much anything with quite a lot of quality of life and easiness (even though I keep reading a lot of reviewers saying it sounds like crap if you dont tinker with it…). If it’s as good as some people say it seems like an amazing option!

  2. Get 2 tube amb combos (like a Fender + EVH 5150) and just get pedals that work for both, and rest assured you get the most real sound you can get (that modelers basically just tries to imitate).

  3. Buy something like a Marshal DSL40 or PRS MT15 that can ”do it all” (which seems like more and more of an impossibility the more I read about it).

I rather buy something something more expensive that works great, rather than buying something that I will upgrade anyways in the future. I’ve never owned a tube amp, so I’m worried if I dont get one will I miss the experience of having one and messing with it + pedals etc.

Thanks for help

Picked this beauty up in a trade today and it has absolutely blown my mind. First vintage amp that I’ve owned and it lives up to the hype. Need to get a minor reverb oscillation issue solved and it will run dang near perfect.

DISCUSSION Amp Recomendation?

I am trying to decide between a new amp (combo tube amps except 1). All fit into my budget, and I play a mix of literally everything. My main playing style is a grungy country sound, but some days i wanna sound like SRV/ John Mayer, other days I wanna sound like Van Halen/ Guns N Roses. I want a pretty versatile amp with great cleans but can still get pretty gritty. I do use pedals for gain (TS9/ BD2/ SD1) but I am starting to experiment with dialing amp gain as I am upgrading from lower end budget solid states. I do mostly practice in my room, but I do practice with full band pretty often with medium sized gigs (more than just bar/ outdoor gigs) so I would like some volume but still is usable at home. Heres my list, sorry for the novel but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Evh 5150 iconic 40w
Marshall DSL40
Blackstar Stage 60 (used)

Scratchy Sound

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got this not too long ago, and its sounding really scratchy on all channels, at any level of volume. Is this likely a cab/ speaker issue or an amp issue. I’ve tried listening closer and can’t really pinpoint a certain speaker thats crapped out but all knobs work and sound fine if there wasn’t that extra noise. I don’t really want to get rid of this amp bc I do like how it sounds and its been real good for a couple months and has been played during a couple shows with no issue, but I also don’t want to dump a bunch of money into repairs since it is a lower end amp. This only started happening recently. Thank you!

Need a small amp recommendation for a shared apartment

Hey everyone,

I'm currently living in a shared apartment, so keeping the noise down for my roommates is my priority.

Right now, I have the Neural DSP Archetype: Mateus Asato plugin, but to be honest, I just don't enjoy practicing through plugins every time I want to pick up the guitar. I want a dedicated hardware amp—something quick to plug into and play.

Since I'm moving out in a few months, I don't want to buy a big setup right now (like a tube head + cabinet). I just need something simple, and budget-friendly that sounds genuinely good for the price at low desktop volumes.

Some examples I've been looking at are the Vox Pathfinder 10 or the Yamaha THR5, but I just can't decide.

I mostly play rock and metal, along with some clean tones for general practice.

What would you recommend for my situation?

Scored this in trade for an old Ampeg V4 I had and wasnt really using much. It’s a lot more amp than I’m used to. Has more gain & volume than I’ll ever need. And from what I’ve researched these things are built to last forever, I love that. Im not super well versed in the 4 cable method, if anyone could share some tips as far as what to have in the loop and in front the amp or whatever else might be useful to know.

HELP Need help with Fender Mustang 1.V2 power issues

Hi everyone, I have a second-hand Fender Mustang 1.V2 that I'm rather fond of. Of late, it had a lot of issues picking up my signal and I diagnosed this to be poor solder on the input jack. I promptly removed and resoldered it. Upon doing this, my amp no longer turned on for some reason.

I've been able to check continuity using a multimeter across both the switch and fuse (the T1.6AL visible externally) and they function well. I'm unsure what other problems might be preventing the power, because the plug socket and stuff are completely fine also.

If anyone has experience with electronics, please let me know. Really hoping I can do some more diagnostics myself at the least because I won't be able to get it repaired for a month more. I have preliminary experience with electronics and can take safety measures.

Princeton Reverb reissue troubleshooting

A few weeks ago I powered up my Princeton reverb, heard a loud popping sound, and now it’s dead silent.

Before I take it to a tech for diagnosis and repair, is there anything I should try in order to remedy the situation on my own? Obviously I’m not about to start poking around inside the amp itself.

I have checked the fuse, and the tubes look ok from a visual standpoint.

Thanks!

Speaker recommendations for a cabinet build for my Wangs VT-1H

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was recently gifted a 1960s Univox bass cabinet and I want to rebuild it as a guitar cabinet to pair with my 1w Wangs VT-1H. Currently the speaker is a 15" Jensen P15. Quite a good speaker, but not for my use case. I play pop punk, modern metal, and some clean stuff too. I'm looking at converting this cabinet to 12" and am looking for speaker recommendations. I mostly play at "bedroom" volume levels. Thanks!

Blown tubes?

I’ve had this red nob fender twin reverb for a year and 4 months ago the reverb tank stoped working and when I went to look the tubes were glowing red. When I went to play I didn’t have any issues and to this day I play this amp everyday for about an hour with a lot of gain and never have a problem. Today I was smelling a burning smell coming from the amp and am curious if this is a sign that my tubes are bad or about to give out.
