In 2022, N.O.R.E., who fucked with Vlad, said, ‘Hey, I want you to come to Drink Champs.’ And I said, ‘Yo, you’re my man. No problem, I got you, but I just don’t want to drink on the show. I’ll drink soda and just pretend to drink.’

He said, ‘No, no, no, you gotta drink. You gotta drink. This is the show.’

And I’m like, ‘Bro, I don’t drink on camera. This is just not what I do. I’ve never done that before.’

But he kept going, ‘No, no. Yo, you’ve made all this money off the culture. You gotta give back. Oh, you rich, so you don’t care,’ and all this other shit.

He’s guilting me and forcing me and coercing me into drinking, to the point where I said, ‘Man, I don’t even want to talk to you anymore.’

Two years later, I thought about it. I said, ‘You know something, man? I fuck with this dude. I respect him. I like his music. I’ll come to your show, and I’ll drink.’

I’ll fly myself out. I fly first class. I stay at the Ritz, get my own security. That whole trip probably cost me about seven, eight thousand dollars. And I came and did it anyways.

But the thing is, N.O.R.E.’s like, ‘You’re a culture vulture. You’re bad for the culture.’

But when you look at what N.O.R.E. does on that show, everybody gets drunk.

Let me tell you something: He had Lamar Odom drinking on his show. Lamar Odom had almost died not that long before.

He had DMX drinking on his show, who later died from an overdose and had a lifelong drug and alcohol problem.

He had Kanye. Kanye, who is a self-proclaimed alcoholic, drinking on his show, starts blabbering about, ‘I could say whatever antisemitic thing that I want to say, and Adidas can’t fire me.’ And he gets fired immediately after, losing $1.5 billion—the biggest loss in hip-hop history.

All because of N.O.R.E. All because of that show where he’s coercing people to drink the way he did it with me. And then he gets liquor sponsors to come in and pay for it.

Okay, he called me the Jerry Springer of hip-hop. If I’m the Jerry Springer of hip-hop, he’s the Jack Kevorkian of hip-hop-the Dr. Death of hip-hop. People die financially or get harmed around this dude. Seriously. N.O.R.E.”

I’ve gone through a sort of journey in music the past couple years where I use Everynoise & Chosic to explore groups of subgenres at random (some that I’ve never even heard of before) and find songs that I can listen to all the way through every time I hear it without skipping and feel like the whole song is a strong complete package. Now, will you agree with my tastes? The hope is that you will enjoy enough of these songs to justify using your time to listen to the music that I’ve narrowed down for you below.

All artists and songs within artists are listed in (somewhat) order of my own personal favorites or what I think are ‘best’. It is very likely that I will go through the entire discography of a couple of the artists that end up getting mentioned in this thread and add them over time. Every song below is here. This way, it will be easier for some to listen to the music rather than song by song inside this post. In fact, It is very likely that I will go through the entire discography of a couple of the artists that end up getting mentioned in this thread and add them over time.

Most importantly, music is to be enjoyed. In whatever way you enjoy music, I hope you will find some time to listen to many of the songs on this post to find some new songs & artists that you never knew you enjoyed.

FAVORITE:

Nas: After finishing this entire process, I realize Nas is the only name I would be fully comfortable throwing forward as ‘the best rapper of all time’. For the most part, I think there are ~8 (or more) greatest rappers of all time, depending on your tastes. Nas is simply the most complete package. Especially his wordsmithing, flow, & storytelling. The World is Yours is one of my favorites to rap myself, Undying Love is absolutely impeccable storytelling about a man that comes home to find his wife cheating on him, Doo Rags is a different type of song from one of my favorite albums when I was younger, Get Down is another incredible story, & Remember the Times is an absolute wild ride of him recounting insane past sex stories.

STRONG REC:

Black Thought: 1 of the 2 closest names I can imagine also being in consideration for the best of all time. But once we get past Nas, I’d rather say that Black Thought is one of the absolute highest names on a very small list of the best rappers ever. I love the way everything flows together in How to Hold a Choppa, Glorious Game is one of my overall go to song recommendations in Hip Hop, and Conception + We Could Be Good being above Glorious Game just goes to show how much respect I have for his ability to string words together over satisfying sounds.

Kendrick Lamar: The other name that comes to mind for one of the greatest overall packages that I listened to. One of the very very few names on this list where I believe I need to give all of his music another listen to see if I missed anything. For the most part, I don’t feel like going through the entire discography of any artist on this list again. I’d rather explore new music. Kendrick is one of the very few exceptions for me. Opposites Attract & Die Hard are immediate recommendations to me, while Sherane & Real provide something different inside this subgenre that I didn’t get from any other artist.

Immortal Technique: When one of his songs hits, they pack some of the hardest emotional punches & storytelling that all of rap / hip hop has to offer. You Never Know came out as my single favorite song in all of Hip Hop, Truth’s Razor is a great intro into that song, Harlem Streets is powerful and talks about many more places than just Harlem, Crimes of the Heart is immensely underrated, and Leaving the Past is a longtime favorite of mine. Listen to Dance With the Devil at your own risk. It is easily the single heaviest song on this entire list alongside You Never Know & some others.

Atmosphere: Wow. I wasn’t expecting this high of a placement. And, truly, a lot of the credit for his name being this high on the list is not only his length of time in Hip Hop and the amount of albums he has released (which I did adjust for, as with others like Lil’ Wayne & Drake), but also that there was a certain album in his discography that takes up 1 out of every 3 songs below. Half of that album is Hip Hop art. Incredible. Still, even disregarding that album, he is still a strong artist with really unique beats. I do genuinely recommend that you go to the bottom of this post at some point where I rank my ‘best albums’, and listen to all 7 songs from When Life Gives You Lemons. Painting is incredible in every way, illustrating life’s many mistakes in such a harrowing way, Guarantees is dark, The Waitress has a bleak ending on top of an amazing flute beat, Yesterday is a depressing life experience dressed up in happy piano, In My Head confronts anxiety in a unique way, Seismic Waves is fun, In Her Music Box is a cute song about his daughter, and Dirty Girl is impeccable. But again, he also has a LOT of music to draw from for this list.

Kanye West: Look, first of all, I get it. I’m trying my best to separate the artist from the art. I want to make it clear: suffering from severe mental health issues does not excuse becoming a self-proclaimed “black Nazi”. That being said, if I remove that giant elephant from the conversation and judge him purely on his musical output, he is a clear powerhouse in Hip Hop and (almost disappointingly) one of the best to ever do it IMO. His beats / mixing / sample selection is probably my favorite of any artist on this list. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy holds a couple of places on the list below, All of the Lights being one of the best interludes on any of the 100’s of albums I listened to, Street Lights is one of my all time favorite Hip Hop songs, I’ve played Lost in the World to so many people that hate Kanye, and it is hard to hate that song. Blame Game is insane, his bars in Cudi Montage are great. New Day is a great introspective look at having kids as a famous person. Overall, a person who is mentally broken and has said some truly abhorrent things has also created some amazing music inside this subgenre. The duality of man.

Eminem: Many may think that even this high of a placement is low (as I am vaguely ordering everything on this post), but I found something disappointing in my journey through Eminem’s discography that you are free to disagree with. Outside of ‘The Eminem Show’ & ‘The Marshal Mathers LP’, especially considering his newer albums, I just found myself not enjoying many of them. Still, his wordsmithing is possibly #1 and is one of the only 2-4 artists on this list (alongside Nas, MF Doom, & maybe 1 other) that I find somewhat hard to keep up with on certain songs. Stan is one of the best overall packages that I found in 100’s of albums from 33 of the most celebrated artists in the subgenre. Till I Collapse & The Way I Am are amazing go-to examples of why people talk about him as one of the greats. Drug Ballad is a personal favorite of mine. And songs like Beautiful & Headlights show the emotional side of his songs with Headlights addressing his long history of how he has viewed his mother through his music, how he has treated her, and just how complicated their relationship is.

Jay-Z: Jay-Z didn’t stick out to me in any particular way other than I can recognize his strength across many different albums and I always felt like a Jay-Z song could be good. There are some artists, where after going through 100+ of their songs and still having another 300+ songs left (Lil’ Wayne), I was not looking forward to the outlook. Jay-Z never once felt like a slog to get through. I know that doesn’t sound like a compliment, but nearly every single artist in the world has a LOT of horrible music if you listen to every song they’ve ever put out through a highly critical lens. Jay-Z has a high floor IMO. Pray is an impeccable representation of his skill. Lost One is a critical look at many emotional moments in his life. Rap Game is a fun poetic exercise in taking an idea touched on in other rapper’s songs and fleshing it out more completely, almost like a creative writing assignment.

RECOMMEND:

Drake: Drake is the absolute definition of a high mid-tier rapper IMO. He comes off as the gatekeeper of the best of the best. You must be better than Drake to be in the conversation. An absolute crowd pleaser. I try my hardest in every single artist and every single subgenre of music I explore to go into things open minded. I did slightly struggle at first not expecting a certain sound from Drake after all the things I’ve heard about him. But I’ll give him a funny compliment: he is the only artist on this list where I could listen to multiple songs in a diverse group of people from all walks of lives & ages and I could get everyone to enjoy it. But also, if you are wondering why he has so many songs on my list, it's because he has released a LOT of music. Yebba’s Heartbreak is one of the best Interludes in all of Hip Hop. With You and Can’t Take a Joke and Madiba Riddim and Massive are all just examples of his ability to create a song I can throw on into a ton of group settings and they work really well. Crowd pleaser. Pimmie’s Dilemma is another incredible interlude. And without talking about the absolute insane amount of songs he has released in his lifetime and listing out all the ones below that I like, take a note that Little Birdie (viewer discretion is advised) is my ‘least favorite’ song of his that I ended up keeping, and it’s still a mini-banger.

Che Noir: I was really disappointed when I listened through the entire discography of 2 of the most well known women in all of Hip Hop. I listened to what felt like 10 or more albums from both of those women (combined) and could hardly find a single song that I loved. And I really tried. It led me to specifically seeking out other women in Hip Hop and I found 4 other names that made it onto this list. Of all 6 of those women, Che Noir edged out 1 or 2 other women in Hip Hop as my favorite. Feel free to disagree: Nas-lite. Moroccan Mint & Smooth Jazz go to show why it was one of the strongest albums that I found in this process. Destiny Rose is an incredible song about her struggle with conceiving a child and whether or not it is true it makes me feel like tearing up when I listen to it.

J. Cole: Mixed grab bag. Also, listening to J. Cole, Drake, & Kendrick’s entire discography of music really lets me appreciate how hilarious those 3 personalities were clashing with each other when they did. I just don’t know what Drake & Cole were doing. And I don’t mean in a way of “they can’t hold a candle to Kendrick”. By now, you know that I believe Kendrick is the best of the 3, but I don’t think the other 2 are so far off or anything. I purely think that the personalities inside their music (with J. Cole rapping about meditating instead of drugs + Drake having a lot of almost R&B esque Hip Hop songs about the complex emotions in relationships) makes the clash against Kendrick so funny. Anyway, he is another classic representation of a high/upper mid-tier rapper to me. And, when I say “mid-tier” in this context, I mean when discussing the greats. I’m starting to hit the part of the list where I am less excited to write out individual pieces for each song below, but all the strong recs below are great examples for each artist.

Outkast/Andre 3000: Oh boy. What did I get myself into? If you are reading this, you may be one of 2 general groups. Either, you only know some of their most popular music + maybe Atliens, or you are like me and you have listened to all (or nearly all) of their albums and songs and you know how weird this discography gets. Listening to this discography made me understand how truly accurate Key & Peele’s sketch about Outkast must be. And yes, I also listened to the 4 experimental jazz albums. My favorite song on all 4 of those albums is listed below, I’m sure you can tell which one based on the title alone.

LIGHT REC:

Tupac: Look, I know what you’re thinking. And it’s not the only name that will upset you seeing it this low. Because it is at this time you are realizing you haven’t seen Notorious B.I.G on this list yet. But I did listen to him. So, getting that out of the way, I did find Tupac better than Notorious B.I.G. I also didn’t find either of them to be particularly amazing or worthy of being hailed as 2 of the greatest rappers of all time. However, I think the biggest disappointment is that both of them clearly would’ve only gotten better over time. I mean, even Tupac would’ve benefited from just being the only person on his songs more often. Baby Don’t Cry is an amazing song; until it isn’t.

Out of every artists on this entire list, regardless of how low I ranked them, Missy Elliot & Lil' Wayne were the only 2 that I didn't enjoy the process of going through all their music. Even though I rated B.I.G. low, I still enjoy plenty of his music to some degree. I know a lot of his songs word for word and plenty of them are fine. But Missy & Wayne were tough. Truly unenjoyable at some points.

i’ll start: biggie isn’t a top 20 rapper all time

I was listening to “Popped Off” by Dr. Dre and T.I. and I always get a kick from how obvious it is that a Relapse era Eminem wrote Dr. Dre’s verse. First and foremost, Dre has always been a producer first so it’s expected that whoever he’s on the track with has written his verse (see Kendrick Lamar on “The Recipe” or Snoop Dogg on “Nuthin’ but a G Thang”) but it’s always more interesting if the rapper writing it isn’t even on the track.

The flow patterns and lyrical content is just so clearly Eminem that it’s funny to me, so I’m just wondering what other examples you guys have where this applies.

Incomplete at the time of J Dilla's passing (February 10th, 2006), the album was completed by producer Karriem Riggins.

Dilla's manager, Tim Maynor, had announced in November 2005 that The Shining would come out in February 2006. While J Dilla underwent treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for complications brought on by TTP and a form of lupus, he worked on two albums: Donuts and The Shining, using a Boss SP-303 sampler and a small 45 record player his friends brought him.
