A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Insurance agent heavily suggesting not to put in a claim for battery fire

Hello. On Saturday I was driving to pick up a friend when suddenly the battery in my trunk caught fire. Called my agent from State Farm and he is heavily suggesting that I don't file a claim because this is considered "mechanical" and should instead be covered by warranty. I'm on the hook roughly for $15,000 which is the remaining balance I owe on the vehicle which I imagine is totaled. Mind you, this is a used vehicle with no factory warranty left. Advice? Really don't know what to do.

Auto Insurance What does ACV mean?

My car is totaled. Could someone explain if ACV is intended to be what I need to pay retail to buy the same car year and mileage, or what I would have gotten in trade at a dealer, or somewhere in between? If it isn’t the retail price, how is that making me whole if I just want to be where I was before I got rear ended (by the other driver, and maybe now again by insurance!)

Edit: thanks! you can see by the answers I’m not the only one whose confused. I’m not asking for more or less than exactly what I had 10 seconds before the accident. Dealers must make a profit and offer sellers a hassle-free instant credit at less than retail towards another car. A seller to a private buyer endures a hassle and risk, and so expects more cash than a dealer will offer. I’m not a dealer so I can’t command the hassle-free price and I have to pay more from a private seller or a dealer at retail to be made whole. I understand my insurance may not do this, but I think there is a solid legal argument that the at-fault driver should make up the difference to get me back where I was in a separate suit.

Auto Insurance T-Boned, other driver refusing to make a statement to State Farm

Hey all,

I was recently t-boned by another driver. My hatchback has a ton of damage, but the other vehicle (lifted truck) got out with a small dent. The driver wasn't the owner of the truck, but both vehicles are insured with State Farm. I made a claim, but the guy who was driving the truck at the time is refusing to give a statement about what happened, and State Farm says that my reimbursement will be filed under my policy instead of the other vehicle's policy, because it's supposedly not clear enough that the other driver was at fault.

Is there anything I can do about this? I don't have any evidence except text messages where he says that I can shoot him an offer for the damages, if I wanted to settle w/o insurance.

Insurance refusing to cover roof and mold after ice dam.

Had a leak from an ice dam in feb. Insurance says the interior damage is limited to ceiling and some drywall, refuses to cover roof or mold. Been fighting since buy I think I'm out of options. They claim the roof had moss on it (there's no moss in the picture they sent claiming moss aside from one tiny spot). The roof is 13 years old and was in good shape prior to the ice dam. Now the decking looks warped and some of the shingles look lifted. They are denying coverage for roof and mold. Any options besides a lawyer?

Auto Insurance Scratched parked car

Hey guys, I’m a college student. This morning I was pulling into a spot, I misjudged the space and ended up scratching the car while the owner was getting out of the car. We both cringed, exchanged info, and went off to our classes.

It was a small scratch on the bumper and a scratch on the reflector. I offered to pay and they said they’ll have insurance cover it.

What do I do? Should I wait to hear back? I’m freaking out cause my premium will go up

Car title (no buyer name)

Has anyone dealt with IAA asking for a blank title after a total loss?**
My car was recently totaled in an accident, and IAA (a third-party company handling things like towing, title processing, etc.) is involved in the claim.
They are asking me to send them the vehicle title without filling in the buyer/purchaser name** so they can process my settlement.
The issue is that, in my state, I believe it may be illegal to sign or transfer a title without entering the buyer’s name. I’ve also received conflicting instructions about this.
Has anyone here been in a similar situation with IAA or a total-loss claim? Did you send the title with the buyer section left blank, and if so, how was it handled?

Auto Insurance Progressive found the previous owner of the car that I just bought from and says that they are an unlisted driver and couldn't finish the quote.

Upvotes

Hello, this is my first car and first time buying car insurance. I haven't registered the car I bought yet so the car isn't really under my name even though I bought it. I went with progressive because they gave me a cheap quote. I had to send proof of the car and the title since it isn't registered yet. A day later they said that they found the previous owner and he isn't listed as another driver for the car so they couldn't give me my quote. However, an hour later they sent me my quote and on the quote summary section, I am only listed with all my information and not the previous owner. Did they fix the problem? Also I just sent an email wanting to confirm that I am only paying for myself and not the previous owner. Please Help!

Help with diminished value?

Does anyone have any guidance on how much to ask for diminished value on my car.

It was only a month old when I got hit in a brand new Toyota 2026 Prius with less than 1,000 miles. The damage wasn’t “too bad” with just a back corner being damaged/hit (not my fault) $3500 in repairs.

I saw the 17c formula but with my car only having had been a month old I’m wondering if I should ask for more or if that has no bearing on a the claim.

Travel for Work

Upvotes

I am a travel nurse and travel to other states to practice while maintaining a tax home in my home state.

My policy is based in my home state per tax laws and common sense - I cannot change policy for every contract. However the contract I’m at now I’m here for 11 months (12 months is the limit for the above mentioned criteria)

I enrolled in Progressive Snapshot because I’ve done it before and it has saved me money and I also don’t drive much.

Will this be a problem with them seeing I’m “living” out of state? I obviously have all documentation necessary to prove I’m here from work and do not live here permanently, but I know insurance can be weird and I’m wondering if I should opt out for this purpose. I don’t want them to use this to deny any potential future claims

Home Insurance Suggestions for how to value native bushes lost in wild fire?

As the title indicates, I'm in an area recently impacted by a significant fire. Many of my neighbors lost their homes and we are feeling incredibly grateful to still have ours.

We're working with insurance on our smoke damage home and personal property claim. One of the things they’ve asked us to do is to outline damaged landscape items and indicate replacement cost.

The challenge I'm hitting is that some of the established landscaping we lost were native bushes that no landscaper or arborist is likely to replace. No local nurseries carry this species because this type of plant is everywhere. We specifically kept and cared for about 5 large ones in our yard, 3 are completely gone, and I'm at a loss for how to start with a cost evaluation.

We also lost a number of other natives that I've planted over the years but those are smaller and more straightforward given that we originally bought them. The other bushes were here when we moved in.

Any suggestions or insite is greatly appreciated!

Auto Insurance first major car accident and im injured, advice needed

so i got into a pretty major wreck on the highway where traffic came to a complete stop and i was rear ended in my suv by a sedan going est speed of 68 mph. i was not taken by an ambulance but i got evaluated at the er the same day and was told i likely had a concussion as well as global amnesia surrounding the events of the accident. im following up with my primary regarding the possibility of a mTBI to see whether or not ill need to be referred to a specialist since i cant remember anything after the impact or how i even got on the shoulder for that matter. i also told the fire fighters who arrived on seen that i believed that i was okay physically but that i wasnt sure and wrote in my statement "i am not injured at this time to my current knowledge" verbatim, which im paranoid about. ive given statements to both the bodily injury adjuster and the claims adjusted but they both haven't been able to reach the other party yet. im 19 and know absolutely nothing about insurance or the right way to go about this, so i need all the advice i can possibly get please!!

Car insurance help, people coming after me falsely

Upvotes

On Aug 2 2026 my mother's boyfriend & I got into a huge argument. His car and my car and my mom's car were all in the driveway. I hopped in my car and had to reverse out of the driveway and then speed away to get away as fast as possible (earlier that day, he had chased me up the driveway calling me stupid repeatedly, so I really wanted to get away.) I am 28F my mom is 75F and her bf is 77M. After I sped away from the house (and have not returned since) he filed a claim with his insurance stating that I struck his car as I was reversing and trying to get away from them. I am worried both he and my mom will attest to his insurance (he has Liberty Mutual) "yes, I saw her hit John's car," when I did not. At first, Liberty was trying to get in touch with me and I said I had no idea what they were talking about (didn't know he had Liberty when they were contacting me.) A few days later, my mom probably hooked John up with my license plate and insurance info, and now my insurance reached out saying "this person says you struck their parked car." I say "no, I have no knowledge of that. my car has no damage so how did I strike a car? what damages are they claiming?" and that's when I learn my insurance (Arbella) was contacted by Liberty Mutual. I submitted an operators report saying how "this is my moms BF reporting- we don't get along- I was leaving the house- my car has no damages" and submitted photos of my undamaged car. I'm worried if insurance will believe them because it's 2v1? And the Arbella said a demand could be sent from Liberty Mutual if he doesn't just give it up. There's only eyewitness testimony, no camera footage to prove I didn't hit him, and it's stressing me out and I'm losing sleep over it to the point where I have been sleeping/living in my car since he did this just to not see them. I guess my question is do they have a case? I'm worried he will relentlessly come after me

Auto Insurance I am in desperate need of input. I feel lost and overwhelmed.

Upvotes

Progressive (direct, my current insurer): ~$275/mo with a $2,000 deductible, but this hasn’t been reviewed against the recent at-fault accident yet since my policy period isn’t up

GEICO, via an independent agency rep (not a GEICO employee, sells GEICO policies among others): quoted me $289/mo with a $1,000 deductible, said it’s “finalized” and includes the accident, dated the report as pulled a day after my accident

GEICO, when I called their support line directly: rep said they saw no MVR or CLUE report pulled on their end, and estimated I’d actually be looking at $350+
• GEICO, when I ran a quote myself directly on GEICO’s own website: also came back around $350+

My confusion: The agency rep insists her $289 quote is final and accounts for my at-fault accident. But two independent GEICO sources (their phone support and their own website) both landed at $350+, with no visibility into her quote.

Is it normal for an insurance agency’s internal quoting system to generate a materially different number than what the actual insurer’s own website or call center produces? Should I trust the direct-from-GEICO number over the agency’s, even though the agent says hers is finalized? Any experience with this kind of discrepancy would help. Trying to figure out which number is realistic before I commit to a car purchase.

Life Insurance Globe Life/Samra "Remote Customer Enrollment Specialist"

Hi guys, I have an interview for this tomorrow and am trying to decide whether to keep it.

This position was advertised as "no cold calling," while simply helping people enroll in services, and answering questions to/supporting pre-existing customers over the phone.

I've seen posts about Globe Life but not this specifically-worded position, though I suspect its little different from others.

But I'd just like to confirm if anyone has experience with this role and if its truly not a cold-calling one. And if there is a base salary for it or is all commission.

Thanks a bunch for any help.

Claims Related My husband got into a car crash 2 months ago and insurance is dragging their feet it feels like. Is there anything else we can do?

2 months ago my husband was involved in a car crash and found not at fault. This happened at the end of june. We contacted the insurance companies and filed a claim the day it happened and called for an update mid July. We never heard anything back until end of July when we were supposed to receive and offer and was told they were still working on it and had JUST gotten the vehicle by the insurance company. Mid August we finally got an offer but found out the offer given was ONLY for the vehicle and the people handling the medical bill and compensating the time off work he missed would be in contact soon. Still have yet to year anything back AND we've had to make two payments on the vehicle even tho we haven't had it in our possession and its been reported that the vehicle was in an accident. My husband will be contacting them tomorrow to figure out what's going on but it feels like it shouldn't have taken this long.

Is there any advice to be given during this situation? Has anyone else dealt with anything similar? How else can we resolve this?

Auto Insurance $0 in deductible recovery across three not-at-fault accidents

I’m not sure if this is a revelation, a vent, or if I’m asking for advice. However, all respectful responses are appreciated.

We have progressive and been with them the past 4 years.

1st accident July 2023, someone backed into our SUV as she was pulling out of a parking spot and my husband was driving straight. Damaged our passenger side doors. She had no insurance.

My UM covered the accident. Progressive said they would get our deposit back. Two years later they said “we exhausted all our options and no luck.”

2nd accident March 2026, I was driving straight slowly in front of a school during drop off hours, a car went into the oncoming traffic lane to go around me. He didn’t clear my car and ended up hitting my driver side, damaging my front bumper. Turns out he was an uber driver in an uber rental. Uber was giving us the runaround, so I used my insurance to speed up the repairs. No luck yet with subrogation

3rd accident June 2026, driving straight on a 3 lane one way. Other driver (at high speed) randomly slams into my driver side, pushing me out of my driving lane and into a parked car. Totaled both his car, mine, and the parked car. We both have progressive, he claims he swerved out of the path of a phantom driver from a side street. No one to corroborate his story, but Progressive decides we all have to use our own insurance anyway. They gave us both the same adjuster, and she kept mentioning he might not have enough coverage to cover my vehicle, my injuries, and the other parked car.

Now I’m at 3 accidents. No reimbursements, no explanations. I mean, is this typical? Did we just have a bout of unfortunate luck? should we consider switching auto insurers?

Or is this what it was all along: car insurance is for you, and you only. Maybe that’s it.

I just can’t imagine Progressive not wanting to be reimbursed (with the exception of the last accident)

Health Insurance Does homeowners insurance cover water damage if the leak itself is a plumbing failure?

trying to understand the distinction here before I call insurance. the problem is a pipe behind our bathroom vanity suddenly leaked and damaged the vanity drywall and part of the flooring. I keep reading that homeowners insurance may cover the resulting water damage but not necessarily the plumbing repair that caused it is that true?

Cancelled my insurance and got virtually nothing back

I was in a stressful situation where my home was supposed to sell on a specific date but didn't. I had cancelled my long time insurance and had to get a new insurance policy since I was no longer living there. I was able to finally close on selling 16 days later so I cancelled the new insurance policy. I thought I would get most of the money back since that is how it has worked for me before, but got almost nothing back. My insurance agent broke it down as follows:

A payment was made for 844.69 and the policy was in force for 16 days.

First subtract all fees from that amount ...fees were $58.69 so that then leaves a balance of 786.00 (fees are only partially refundable).

Then the policy is short rated at 10% which is 10% of the overall premium (the overall premium of this policy was $3,202.69). 10% of that was 320.26

So he paid 844.69

less fess       58.69

____________________

786.00

short rate    320.26

__________________________

465.74

/16 days in force is daily rate of 27.35

The refund you got back was for your FIGA fee.

Does this look correct? I would imagine the daily fee would be less than 27.35 if the overall policy was 3.2K. I am in FL and all I can find about short rate law is that they can't take more than 10% but I'm not clear on if that is based on what I paid or the full premium amount as they are saying. I can't seem to find anywhere in my contract though where it says I have to pay an early cancellation fee or short rate fee. I just see it mentioning cancellation will result in pro rata. Any insight is appreciated! I just seems like I got ripped off to pay almost 850 to insure a home for 16 days.
