Auto Insurance Car Insurance Moving States

Hi all - I’m currently on my parents car insurance and moving states. This sub says my dad needs to sign a car over to me, file a Form 709 Gift Tax, and then I get car insurance in my own name. What if instead of giving me the whole car, my dad just adds me to the title (so we are both on the title). This will avoid my needing a Form 709. Can I then get insurance in my name or will it be more difficult with him on the title? Will insurance be more expensive or less with him on the title? Or, if it’s the two of us, can I stay under his car insurance while living out of state? Thanks!

Auto Insurance i want the cheapest car insurance possible

I don't care about coverage or plans or whatever, I just can't drive without it so I want to pay the least possible. I am 18, no accidents no tickets no nothing, buying a used car on Facebook in full. What's my best option? I live in Indiana (hell) so I don't know if that effects anything, any ideas?

Auto Insurance I am in desperate need of input. I feel lost and overwhelmed.

Progressive (direct, my current insurer): ~$275/mo with a $2,000 deductible, but this hasn’t been reviewed against the recent at-fault accident yet since my policy period isn’t up

GEICO, via an independent agency rep (not a GEICO employee, sells GEICO policies among others): quoted me $289/mo with a $1,000 deductible, said it’s “finalized” and includes the accident, dated the report as pulled a day after my accident

GEICO, when I called their support line directly: rep said they saw no MVR or CLUE report pulled on their end, and estimated I’d actually be looking at $350+
• GEICO, when I ran a quote myself directly on GEICO’s own website: also came back around $350+

My confusion: The agency rep insists her $289 quote is final and accounts for my at-fault accident. But two independent GEICO sources (their phone support and their own website) both landed at $350+, with no visibility into her quote.

Is it normal for an insurance agency’s internal quoting system to generate a materially different number than what the actual insurer’s own website or call center produces? Should I trust the direct-from-GEICO number over the agency’s, even though the agent says hers is finalized? Any experience with this kind of discrepancy would help. Trying to figure out which number is realistic before I commit to a car purchase.

Leosource insurance is a scam agency

I just wanted to share a negative experience that I had with this insurance brokerage company, hopefully so that other poeple don't fall into the same trap that I did.

I recently left my job and moved states and was looking for a short term insurance policy while looking for a new position. I went through a website that seemed to be with Covered California and ended up getting a link to this company, LeoSource insurance. The guy that I spoke with seemed pretty nice and helped me get a policy that was along the lines of what I was looking for and cheaper (still not cheap) than other options (which was a red flag). I realized after signing up that the policy I had signed up for did not meet the state required minimum, so I had to go back to looking for a new policy. At the time I thought "ok that's no big deal, the company has a 30 day cancellation policy."

Here's where they get you. I called them back the following day and requested to cancel my insurance policy and the representative that I spoke with was nice and said "yes, no problem I will cancel it for you right now and issue a refund." About a week later I still hadn't received a confirmation or a refund in my account so I called again and she said that it normally takes a month for the refund to be issued. Seemed like a lot but I thought I was going to be refunded so whatever. A couple of days ago (now about 30 days later) I got a notification that I was being charged for another month of the insurance. I called back in yesterday and the representative that I talked to said that there was never a previous cancellation request but he was happy to cancel it for me. This morning I got a followup call from a representative whom I've spoken to previously, who basically told me that my cancellation request was not within the 30 days so they will not make a refund request and that it was my fault for not doing more to follow up with them or establish a paper or email trail. We argued back and forth for 20mins with her basically telling me that I was making things up and wasting her time before telling me to have a nice day and abruptly hanging up.

So there's the scam for you. They will sell you something that you don't need and if you request to have the policy cancelled, they will intentionally not issue a cancellation email until after the 30 days so that they don't have to give you a refund. Am I at fault for being a moron? Yes and I should have done more research and known better than to fall for something like this. But I just want to put this out there so that if anyone is thinking of getting a policy through them they can ideally see this and go with a legit company.

regarding clarification of cost coverage prior to initiating legal proceedings?

I have legal expenses insurance. The issue is that the insurance company initially told me that covering the costs would be difficult or even impossible because I had taken out the policy only after purchasing the vehicle.

Nevertheless, I submitted a request for coverage.

Subsequently, coverage was confirmed, and I received a written confirmation of coverage with instructions to forward it to my lawyer.

My insurance advisor initially told me that this case was fully covered. However, after consulting the legal department, he changed his statement. After I finally received the written confirmation of coverage, I asked him for the reason; he said I had "gotten lucky" and that the costs could be covered after all.

Since I received incorrect information at the start, I am somewhat unsettled. Consequently, I find it difficult to trust him completely now.

I also have the impression that I might have been entitled to coverage from the very beginning and that the insurance company only told me it wasn't possible due to an initial error.

As this is my first case involving legal expenses insurance, I am somewhat concerned that contacting the insurance company directly about the current status might negatively affect the coverage confirmation I have already received.

I would like to ask the insurance company why coverage was initially ruled out but is now possible.

Could you please advise me if it is safe for me to contact the insurance company directly or talk with the lawyer first?

Thank you very much for your time.

The insurance company offered a very low ACV which I rejected. There is also the issue of the rental car; I’m hoping everyone can help me out.

I was in a car accident on July 25th, and the other driver was found 100% at fault. I rented a car starting July 27th and am still renting one now. On August 14th, the vehicle was declared a total loss. Since the other driver's insurance coverage was insufficient to cover the claim, I used my own collision coverage. Today, the insurance company offered me a settlement amount of $14,800 after deducting the $1,000 deductible; I rejected this offer because, in Los Angeles, the total cost (including sales tax and transfer fees) for a 2018 Prius One with around 110,000 miles should normally be between $18,000 and $20,000. I have a few questions: 1️⃣ Regarding the rental car covered by my own insurance: is it true—as my claims adjuster stated—that rental costs are reimbursed for a maximum of only 30 days? My policy covers $40 per day for rentals, up to a maximum of $1,200. I have already been renting for over 35 days, and the daily rate is $37.50; does this mean I have to pay for the excess days myself? 2️⃣ My car had just undergone maintenance before the accident and was in excellent condition, yet the insurance company based their offer on the value of vehicles with known quality issues. I provided them with pricing for comparable vehicles with similar mileage this afternoon; will they issue a revised offer?

Auto Insurance Adding second driver to car insurance with no insurance history

Hey folks

So I always been told by my parents that insurance follows the car and not the driver so I haven’t been on my partners car insurance despite driving the car regularly. I don’t think I was on my parent’s insurance either. Last night I figured out I should definitely be added as a second driver so I’ll be doing that in the next day or two. I am M29 and have had my license for ten years with a clean record but no insurance history. I also have excellent credit and live in NJ. My partner is F35 and has had her own insurance for a while now. Should we expect our insurance to go up a lot when I’m added to the policy? I’m assuming insurers place more weight on a clean insurance claim record than a clean driving record?

Thanks!

Home Insurance Would you buy this house?

My husband and I are day dreaming about what homes we could own in Bay Area of Houston if not for the wild variability in insurance. We found this fixer upper on an absolutely stunning lot in an incredibly unique neighborhood. Surprisingly the NFIP quote is around $2500 which is cheaper than many houses in Zone X in the area in the middle of indiscriminate suburban sprawl.

I doubt you could transfer policies because this is an estate sale.

Insurance professionals, would you play the long on game on this one? Pros and cons? Things to consider? We plan to stay for at least 10 years.

Possibly a bad decision, but if we risk flooding no matter where we are in the area, we might as well enjoy it right?

Gm Insurance Headache

Anyone else ever make a claim with them and been an absolute disaster?

Trucks been at the shop for over a month now and they haven’t even had a chance to work on it. GM insurance direct contact approved the damages over the photos submitted etc, sent the initial quote which was like 3k. Body shop is around 15k.. after filing a supplementary claim the 3rd party appraiser Alacrity has been a nightmare. Ghosting the shop for even a week no response. Arguing back and forth with the shop like it’s coming out of his personal pocket. Doesn’t even want to submit the claim to GM for approval.. went to 2 shops before starting the process and they both came out to about the same dollar amount (11/12k) before actually tearing into the truck..
shops telling me I might have to enact the “right to appraisal” , super disappointed with GM insurance and the whole process. Claim with progressive years ago was easy and no problem whatsoever. Been borrowing a vehicle for over a month now and work hasn’t even started. Any advice on what to do?

I had a one year subscription to AAA last year. It lasped this year. I have never seen so much junk mail in my life. It's like I've joined a cult and I've left and they are after me. And it's not just little postcards no, it's huge packets of manilla envelopes. Day after day after day. I cleaned out my car the other day and 90% of the paper was AAA crap.

Health Insurance Is it normal for your job to be charging you for health insurance when you've been off work due to health related reasons?

I’m with Sunlife in Canada and been off work for the last year due to health related issues. It’s taken over a year for my insurance and dr’s to get their shit together and get all of it done. On top of that I have to pay my job for insurance every month so I can still have it. Is this normal? Why doesn’t the employer cover it? Can you get this money back? Am I wrong to think this isn’t right?

Health Insurance Should I make my allergist bill this differently?

So I went to an allergist for the first time and the bill is much higher than anticipated. One of the odd things I'm seeing is that instead of billing me one time for my allergy serum, they are splitting the billing into 3 months of bills. $500-$500-$200. Looking at the billing, they're billing it as if I had services on dates where I did not actually have services done.

According to them, they are doing this and billing these as "Antigen Therapy Services" over 3 months to give me better discounts from my insuance. Part of me thinks this is BS and a way they can charge more as insurance would knock down the 1 time bill of $1,200 more than 3x separate bills. Am I on the right track, or is this allergist actually getting me a "deal" by doing it this way?

Cancelled my insurance and got virtually nothing back

I was in a stressful situation where my home was supposed to sell on a specific date but didn't. I had cancelled my long time insurance and had to get a new insurance policy since I was no longer living there. I was able to finally close on selling 16 days later so I cancelled the new insurance policy. I thought I would get most of the money back since that is how it has worked for me before, but got almost nothing back. My insurance agent broke it down as follows:

A payment was made for 844.69 and the policy was in force for 16 days.

First subtract all fees from that amount ...fees were $58.69 so that then leaves a balance of 786.00 (fees are only partially refundable).

Then the policy is short rated at 10% which is 10% of the overall premium (the overall premium of this policy was $3,202.69). 10% of that was 320.26

So he paid 844.69

less fess       58.69

____________________

786.00

short rate    320.26

__________________________

465.74

/16 days in force is daily rate of 27.35

The refund you got back was for your FIGA fee.

Does this look correct? I would imagine the daily fee would be less than 27.35 if the overall policy was 3.2K. I am in FL and all I can find about short rate law is that they can't take more than 10% but I'm not clear on if that is based on what I paid or the full premium amount as they are saying. I can't seem to find anywhere in my contract though where it says I have to pay an early cancellation fee or short rate fee. I just see it mentioning cancellation will result in pro rata. Any insight is appreciated! I just seems like I got ripped off to pay almost 850 to insure a home for 16 days.

Confused abt my deductible

Before making my claim with my insurance I went to the body shop got an estimate and then called the insurance. I just got my check and the insurance estimate and they are the full amount, not the amount minus my deductible. I’m just confused as to why they fully paid me for the repairs leaving me not paying my deductible?

Car insurance doubled after accident

Location: NJ
Carrier: GEICO
Hello all, I was in a vehicular accident two months ago where I was not at fault. I was stopped and someone hit me from behind totaling my car. While GEICO had made me whole on the value of my car , the adjuster mentioned my rates would not go up since the police report and insurance companies deemed the other party at fault. That being said, they raised my rates today to ~$300/month from around $150/month. It’s ironic because my cost of coverage for two cars was about $300/month and I had finally reduced it to half by removing the totaled car after the accident. I know policies often change after accidents even though no fault was mine it puts me at risk. Is this normal for rates to go up this much?

Edit: update

I talked to GEICO. The premiums will stay the same (146/month) the only issue was that I lost my multi vehicle discount and made GEICO my primary insurance provider, which they prorated back to June when my policy was renewed. So it’s a one time thing even if the email says my new premium has doubled. You can confirm this by looking at the website upcoming payments as well as the premium on the website. The email they sent me had a wrong premium amount.

Other driver didn’t stop at the stop sign, yet there insurance is blaming me.

I was in an accident last week with my 18 month old daughter in the car. We were at a four-way stop sign intersection I stopped. Nobody else was even at the stop signs at that point. The car that hit me was about 20-30 feet back. I start to go and when I’m entering the middle of the intersection. I realize they did not stop at the stop sign and I made eye contact with them as they hit my car. Their insurance company is saying it was my responsibility to ensure that the intersection was clear when I entered. Now I’m having to pay out-of-pocket a high deductible that I will not see back and my car will take three weeks to be fixed. It is a nice new car so I did not get rental insurance because I did not think my car would break down and I would need it. The other insurance company will not pay for my rental car. I am missing work. I am missing school and I don’t know how I’m going to be able to afford to live for the next three weeks. Is there anything I can do to fight this?

Ongoing headache with hail damage claim

Looking for a reality check from anyone who has dealt with similar situations. I’ll try to keep this focused on the facts.

My property is an older home in Ohio with a detached garage, and suffered a hail storm in April. The original RCV is around $18,000.

The main house roof was replaced without major issues. Received initial ACV and depreciation was released upon completion.

The garage roof has a low slope section. The original adjuster’s estimate scoped standard 3-tab shingles for the entire garage roof. When my contractor came out to install it, they found standard shingles could not be properly installed and the roof has a different type of shingle rated for low sloped roofs. My contractor submitted a supplement for the correct materials, but insurance denied it saying that the roof “wear and tear from age” rather than storm damage. But they already scoped the shingle replacement?

ITEL report confirmed that my existing vinyl siding is discontinued and no matching replacement is available. The report doesn’t even have a “closest match” listed. My contractor requested full replacement for reasonably comparable appearance per Ohio admin code. Insurance denied the supplement citing “natural stopping points” and “only damaged portion”. They are currently only covering one elevation.

My claim has had multiple process issues. My original adjuster left the company without notification, and supplements went unanswered for a month until I called and asked what was going on.

My new adjuster ordered a second inspection. The fill in inspector spent approximately 5 minutes at the property and told me and my contractor that my insurance will only cover siding damage on other elevations if it’s “knee high”. We pointed out multiple sections where there were dings and cracks and the adjuster took pictures. He was unprofessional, and told me that he felt like my assigned adjuster was just offloading work and he is putting my claim right back on his plate.

The initial supplement denials were verbal only, and the adjuster is difficult to understand. I needed to specifically request written denials.

I have multiple specific written requests to this adjuster that have been ignored or given brief responses that don’t address the actual question.

At this point, I’m frustrated with both insurance and my contractor. My contractor is pushing me towards appraisal and says that based on their experience with my insurance company, this is the best route for me to take. On the other hand, I feel that my contractors supplement requests were quite weak, and some communication was delayed. I picked this company because they had good reviews and are supposed to be good dealing with insurance. The person I’m working with at this company is very young, and I’m new to this whole process too.

To add to this, since they couldn’t install the original scoped material on the garage roof, there is more leftover material than usual. The leftover material has been left on my yard for months after following up with my contractor a few times to get rid of it. It’s not biggest deal to me with everything else going on, but it does make me question how this company has handled the rest of my claim.

I’m of the mind to go through with appraisal as I’ve heard good things. I’ve been dealing with this for 4+ months and honestly getting exhausted.

CA insurer denying rental-car collision despite “custody of or being operated by” policy language

location: California

I’m seeking help understanding the physical-damage language in my California personal auto policy. I am also beginning to consult attorneys, but I would appreciate perspectives from insurance and coverage professionals.

The basic facts:

  • I rented a private passenger SUV for a short personal trip in Utah.
  • I was the named renter and was sitting in the front passenger seat when the collision occurred.
  • A non-household friend was driving with my permission.
  • My friend was not listed on my auto policy or the rental agreement.
  • The rental company is demanding approximately $26,600 for a total loss and related charges.
  • My California policy had collision coverage with a $500 deductible.
  • The rental SUV was not owned by me and was not furnished or available for my regular use.

Other possible coverage sources have been pursued:

  • The rental agreement stated that a damage waiver was included, but the rental company denied the waiver because my friend was not an authorized driver.
  • My friend was a named insured under his own Washington auto policy and had collision coverage. His policy covered qualifying non-owned vehicles used with the owner’s permission. His insurer denied coverage because he was not listed on the rental agreement and therefore, in its view, did not have the rental company’s permission.
  • The credit-card benefit administrator advised that its rental benefit applies only when the cardholder is driving.

Therefore, no insurer or benefit provider is currently paying the rental company’s claim.

My present dispute concerns the section of my California policy titled “Part D: Coverage for Physical Damage to Your Auto,” which provides collision and comprehensive coverage.

Part D says the insurer will pay for direct and accidental loss to a covered auto or a “non-owned auto.”

The relevant definition states:

“Non-owned auto” means a private passenger auto not owned by or furnished or available for the regular use of the named insured or a family member “while in the custody of or being operated by” the named insured or a family member.

My insurer denied coverage because my friend and the rental vehicle were not listed on my policy.

I requested reconsideration and specifically asked the insurer to address the separate “custody of” language. The insurer responded that a non-owned vehicle is covered only when operated by me, a family member, or another listed driver.

However, the Part D definition in my issued policy does not say “only when operated by.” It says “in the custody of or being operated by.”

I was the named renter, remained contractually responsible for the vehicle, retained the rental agreement and keys, and was physically present in the front passenger seat when the collision occurred.

I have asked the insurer to:

  1. Address the “custody of” alternative directly.
  2. Identify the Part D provision containing its claimed operation-only requirement.
  3. Identify any Part D exclusion that eliminates my physical-damage coverage solely because a non-household friend was driving.
  4. Explain whether it is relying on the policy’s separate “reasonable belief” exclusion.
  5. Analyze my Part D physical-damage coverage separately from whether my friend qualifies for liability coverage.

My questions:

  • In ordinary auto-coverage practice, can a named renter who remains in the vehicle retain “custody” even though another person is physically driving?
  • Is the insurer effectively reading “in the custody of” out of the definition?
  • Is an unlisted driver automatically disqualifying for my first-party physical-damage coverage when the insurer has not identified an applicable unlisted-driver exclusion?
  • What should a proper written coverage determination address before the insurer relies on an operation-only interpretation?
  • Regarding my friend’s Washington policy, can permission from the named renter ever satisfy a non-owned-auto requirement for “owner’s permission,” even when the driver was not listed on the rental agreement?
  • What type of attorney should ordinarily lead the coverage dispute?

Auto Insurance Canceled my State Farm insurance.

Today I canceled with State Farm. I was paying 300 bucks for my Toyota Camry. I have zero accident and zero tickets. When I first started with them I was paying around 160ish and the most I ever paid was 305 and idk way they knocked off 5 bucks and I've been paying 300 bucks for a couple of months now. I ended up going with progressive insurance for the same coverage for 216 bucks. I still think insurance prices are crazy. I've been driving since I was 17 I'm 27 now and have never filed a claim on any of my policy's. It is what it is I guess.
