My application for FBR through my Irish grandfather was accepted August 28, 2025. I received a congratulations email yesterday, August 31, 2026, at 7am EST, that my application for citizenship had been successful. I was not contacted throughout and as far as I know my witness was not contacted either. The email says the certificate has been printed and posted so hopefully won't take too long to get here!

My application was received in Ireland on September 2, 2025.

My application was just approved by email on September 1, 2026 at 8 a.m. Eastern Time (Canada) aka 13:00 in Ireland.

I was never contacted at any point during the wait.

Edited to add that I was not contacted at all throughout that time and nor was the witness.

Has anyone found a benefit of having a passport card at all?

Just got a new passport and also want a card but wondering if its just €40 gone.

I like having all the forms of ID id ever need. Especially since flying back from China and the person at the airline desk asking for a citizens card and not accepting driver's licence on top on my passport.

Hello! I’m just wondering if anyone here is Turkish and has gotten a Turkish association agreement visa? I applied for one in July because I’ll have reached one year at my job this week. But i still haven’t gotten a response and I’m getting quite nervous. Nothing online says how long it actually takes or any updates regarding it whatsoever. Could someone please help me? Thank you!

So sitting around the 16mth mark (FBR & Passport), my passport finally arrived. I made a post around 2wks ago, regarding the passport office contacting me and stating they couldn’t get hold of my witness.

I contacted my witness immediately, then contacted the office back immediately to let them know my witness was waiting everyday for the call.

Then all of a sudden a nice lady took charge of my application and called the witness herself (instead of leaving it to the Irish embassy in Paris!), within a day it was confirmed and then a quick retake of my photo (thank god, as my original application photo was not great!). Friday went to print, following Monday last week it was dispatched, and finally arrived in Denmark this morning.

My application did drag on, around the 4mth mark. Dragged on for no apparent reason according to the passport helpline, they forwarded it to a manager (twice). Finally bringing me to here!

I’m happy this chapter is over, it’s been a long journey. Good luck to everyone that’s going through the motions, I’ll stay in the sub to help out in anyway I can.

Received my FBR approval today and want to get right on to applying for a passport, but step 2 asked for my certificate number that I don't have yet.

Do I just have to wait for the certificate at this point, or is there anything that I can do in the meantime while I wait so that I'm ready to go?

I know I could search around, but there's a lot of info out there and sometimes it's just easier to ask… thanks.

The email says printed fidelity form, and this invitation does not say printed so I’m reading this as just showing them your phone counts? Anyone confirm?

Been viewing here for a while and first time post. I'm a UK born guy with a British passport, living in The Netherlands, and as I have an Irish grandfather, I decided to commit to pursuing Irish citizenship. It's something I've wanted to do for a while and finally pushed myself to start (and enjoy the wait- I'm British, we enjoy queueing, haha!). But I'm experiencing a small block.

I got all of the documents required, did my research, made the application, and now need to have someone perform the witnessing - but I can't seem to find anyone willing to do this. I've contacted over 10 notaries here and they inform me they don't provide that service and point me to the Gemeente (the local council/municipality, for those outside NL). Which is nice, but I already contacted them and they expressly refused to do it, saying they will only do this for Dutch documents. My doctor is unwilling to help (doctors are hard to see here even when you're actually sick, at the best of times), and both the pharmacist and my veterinarian seemed nonplussed at being asked and declined to do so. I asked my bank, and they also refused to do this as it isn't something they generally do. I even used the correct term, or what I think is the correct term - "Medeondertekening ter bevestiging van uw identiteit" - but with no luck.

Has anyone here successfully completed this step in The Netherlands, and if so, could they give me any pointers please? Thanks! It really does seem that people don't really "do" this in NL.

Hello! I will be spending 6 months in Ireland and will require an IRP.

I am finding mixed answers on how long it should be expected to receive the permit. I see things say as long as 10 weeks to receive the in person appointment needed and another 1-2 to receive the actual card.

My issue is, it also says I must be physically in Ireland In order to book the appointment. I cannot afford 10 weeks of waiting in country for my IRP appointment. Can I truly not book this appointment from my current residence? Will it actually take 10 weeks? Any workarounds or advice in the IRP process would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :))

I will be reaching the 5-year reckonable residence requirements very soon, and I am very curious on other's experiences with the documents they've submitted that were acceptable or not.

In my case,

I am able to provide RTB letter, Health Insurance with husband, and Broadband Internet Bill for year 1 but the rest of four years I can provide strong docs such as EDS etc.

I can provide bank statements, but during the first year period we still were using our Portuguese bank accounts and it states only his name. I'm trying to get the bank to issue a document stating that I was and still am an active user on the account. When I log on, it says im the account holder but when asking for documents, its only in his name which is a weird thing.

Has anyone submitted any other documents other than bank statements or applied with other supporting documents?

The new guidance wants the addresses of the shops on it. My bank, PTSB, does not provide the addresses of the shops on the statements.

As many know, there are mechanisms in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 to revoke a certificate of naturalisation from a naturalised citizen for a variety of reasons.

I was interested in knowing how often this actually happens, and whether there is a legitimate risk to be considered, and hence made an FOI request to the Department of Justice asking for the number of times there have been revocations under the following sections.

Pursuant to S.19(1)(c) of the 1956 Act, a certificate of naturalisation may be revoked after a period of seven years resident outside of the state without annually declaring your intention to remain an Irish Citizen in the prescribed manner.

This has never happened! No one has ever had a certificate of naturalisation revoked under this section of the act. This doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't be completing the declaration form after 7 years outside of the state, given how trivial it is, and the fact that it is still possible for the Minister of Justice to revoke your certificate in the future, but the risk is incredibly minor.

Pursuant to S.19(1)(e) of the 1956 Act, a certificate of naturalisation may be revoked if you acquire a foreign citizenship by any voluntary act other than marriage.

This has happened three times, voluntarily. Two times in 2016, and once in 2018. I assume this is the result of a naturalised Irish Citizen, naturalising in a country where one must first renounce all other citizenships. Therefore losing their Irish Citizenship under this section of the Act as opposed to S.21?

In any case, the risk of having your certificate of naturalisation revoked in these situations is practically zero, for those who were curious!

I'm planning to apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation in Jan 2027 and I am trying to understand how the new residency proof system works and would appreciate opinions from anyone who has recently applied.

My situation is:

• I start to work from January 2022 ( that is why i decide to count from this date for the 5 years), as I have an **Employment Detail Summary ** for 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
• I also have bank statements from January 2022 onwards, covering until now. 
• I have a RTB letter from August 2022 until the present, but before August 2022, unfortunately I don't have any Type B documents (utility bills etc).

Under the current system, my understanding is:

• Strong official document (used to be Type A) = 100 points
• Supporting document (used ot be Type B) = 50 points
• Need 150 points for each year of residence claimed.

For 2022, I potentially have:

• EDS = 100 points
• Bank statements = 100 points
• Tenancy letter starting August 2022 = 50 points

So I have two possible approaches:

Option 1: Submit the EDS + bank statements for 2022, giving me 200 points, even though the guidance says you don't need to provide additional documents once you reach 150.

Option 2: Submit the bank statement (100) + tenancy letter (50) = 150 points, even though the tenancy only starts in August 2022.

For 2023–2026, I should have no issue using an EDS + tenancy document for each year to reach 150 points.

My main questions are:

1. Is it okay to submit 200 points for 2022, or should I strictly submit documents totalling 150 points? I think they used to ask us to submit from Type A and Type B, but now they refrased the documents category, does that mean we have more options, and i can submit two Strong official document aka Type As for proof?
2. If I use the tenancy letter starting in August 2022 as my 50-point supporting document, is that acceptable for the 2022 residency year even though it doesn't cover January–July?

I need some guidance regarding Stamp 2 to Stamp 1G transition. I submitted my application on 28th August and later learned about ISD’s rule of accepting renewal applications only 12 weeks in advance. Given that my Stamp 2 is valid till 31st December 2026, my window opens only on 8th October. Under these circumstances, shall I cancel the current application? How long does it take for them to approve a cancellation? And do they refund the application fee?

Any help will be appreciated.

Hey all, hoping someone here has dealt with something similar.

I'll be renewing my Stamp 1G (Third Level Graduate Programme) soon as it is valid till mid-December. My current passport still has a good few months left on it, but not quite enough to cover the full length of the new 12-month permission if it were granted. I found a line on the ISD site saying that in first-time registrations, if your new permission would run past your passport's expiry, they cap the permission at your passport expiry date and you top it up later once you get a new passport. But I can't find anything confirming whether the same applies to renewals specifically.

I've already submitted a query through the Customer Service Portal asking about this directly, but there's no rep assigned to it yet and no indication of how long it usually takes to get a response.

Has anyone actually renewed their IRP with a passport that had less validity left than the new permission period? What happened, did they cap it, ask for anything extra, or was it a non-issue? Also curious if anyone knows a rough turnaround time on portal queries these days, trying to figure out if I should just wait it out or make other plans in the meantime.

Quick question - Is my mother eligible for FBR if her grandparents (all four) were born in Ireland BUT neither of her parents (who were born in the US) did anything to officially "claim" Irish citizenship. I'm fairly certain that they didn't have to "claim" Irish citizenship as it was granted for being born to Irish-born citizens, which therefore means my mother is eligible for Irish citizenship via FBR. Is that interpretation correct?

Hello! I am a Canadian who has been trying to get my Irish passport! I applied for Irish citizenship through the Foreign Birth Registry in October of 2025 and I haven’t heard anything since. I got one email about two weeks after stating that my application was received but after that nothing. I was just wondering if this is normal or if there is anything else I can do. Thanks so much!

​The system instructions say "Multiple pages must be combined into a single document".

​In my case, I only have around 11 pages of bank statements in total (3 consecutive months for each year, arranged chronologically). ​Is it better to combine all 11 pages into one single PDF (Description: Bank Statements 2024-2026)?

Has anyone uploaded a single merged PDF for multiple years without any issues? Appreciate any advice!
