Hi everyone! I need some advice because I urgently need a computer and I'm having a hard time finding a good option within my budget. (Just to be transparent: I don't know a lot about laptops, so everything I'm sharing here is based on things I've been reading and researching lately!)

I'm from Cali, Colombia, so prices and availability are very different from the US/Europe. My initial budget is around 400,000 COP (~$100 USD), but I could potentially stretch it to around $200 USD (~700,000–800,000 COP) if it is really worth it. I cannot realistically go much higher than that.

What I need it for:

University/school work (I'm finishing high school and will study Law)

Lots of browser tabs (sometimes 50–100+)

PDFs and research

Google Drive/Docs and Microsoft Office

Video calls/classes

English/German/French study

General everyday use

Some light gaming, but gaming is NOT my priority

I would like to use Linux if the hardware is old

I currently have an HP All-in-One with a Ryzen 3 4300U, only 4 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD. It has become extremely slow and freezes frequently, especially with many browser tabs and video calls. I installed Linux Mint, which helped somewhat, but the hardware is still a major limitation.

I originally wanted a laptop that could last me 5–8 years, but I understand that this is probably unrealistic with my current budget. Right now I mainly need something that is clearly better/more usable than my current computer and can serve me for the next few years.

Options I've found so far:

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon — around 820,000–900,000 COP (~$220–250 USD) | 8 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, Full HD, Intel UHD 620, Windows 11 Pro, Refurbished. (The listing says "i5-8600U", which seems suspicious because I can't find a normal Intel mobile CPU with that exact model number).

Lenovo ThinkPad E490 — 820,843 COP (~$220 USD) | i5-8265U, 8 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, Full HD, Intel UHD 620, Refurbished. The seller says the battery is guaranteed for only 1–2 hours, although it may last longer. The good thing is that RAM can be upgraded.

Mac Mini Mid-2011 — 400,000 COP (~$100 USD) | Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, Windows 10 currently installed (I could install Linux on it instead). The Mac Mini is tempting because it fits my current budget and has 16 GB RAM + SSD, but obviously it isn't portable and I would still need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. I already have an HP All-in-One, but I don't think I can simply use its screen as a monitor for the Mac Mini.

So my main question is: what would you do in my situation?

Would you buy the $100 Mac Mini as a temporary desktop?

Spend up to ~$200 on a used/refurbished ThinkPad/Latitude/EliteBook?

Look for an older business laptop such as a ThinkPad T480/T470, Dell Latitude 5400/5490, HP EliteBook 840, etc.?

Buy something older/cheaper and upgrade the RAM/SSD?

Do something completely different?

I'm specifically looking for used business laptops because I've read that older ThinkPads, Latitudes and EliteBooks can be much better value than very cheap new laptops. I'm also willing to buy something older if it has good Linux compatibility, an SSD, at least 8 GB RAM, and preferably upgradeable RAM.

Important: I'm in Colombia, so please keep in mind that a recommendation that costs $150 in the US might cost significantly more here.

Any advice on specific models, CPU generations I should look for, models I should avoid, or what would be the best use of ~$100–200 in my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I have had a 15,6" laptop for the past 9 years (which weighted 2 kg and had thicker frames than nowaday's laptops) and wanted to switch. I'm interested in a 14" laptop that weights around 1,25 kg and a 16" laptop that weights around 1,5 kg. I'm not sure whether to go for the 14" or the 16", as I would be carrying it to uni in a bag almost everyday (and in a bus/train sometimes) but also don't have a really good sight and are used to my old 15,6" laptop. I use my laptop mostly for uni and studying, which would be minimum 7h in front of it every day, reading, typing, using split screen,... I'm concerned about whether the 16" would feel like "too much" of a screen, as in too inmersive, and the 14" too small and make my eyes fatigue. Also, something that used to happen to me with my old laptop is that I would avoid bringing it to uni just because of the weight (with it, my bag weighted up to 4 kg and that was overwhelming).

This being said, I would be happy if someone shared their experience of switching from 15,6" to 14" or 16" as well. Thanks!

would this computer work for playing slightly modded (~100 mods) minecraft, or stardew valley with like 4 mods at most?

I am getting money back from my Uni and want to put it to a better computer since mine dies in 4 minutes (exaggeration) and has an i3 processor. With the little bit of googling I have done with my pea sized brain I think it can, but I want to check with people who actually know what theyre doing.

So I know for sure I am mostly doing work on my computer, but I need a laptop for class and I want to cheapskate this purchase because I just need it to be portable and handle code and possibly cad tools. Is 16GB ram and 512 GB enough?

I’m a software developer and will be starting a Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence master’s soon. I’ll mainly use the laptop for coding, IntelliJ, Docker, ROS 2 and general development.
I’m considering the ThinkPad X9 15 Gen 1. Would you recommend it for this use case, or should I get a different laptop instead?
I really like its low weight and 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, but I’m not a fan of very glossy screens and reflections. How noticeable is the reflectiveness in everyday use?

There’s no price difference between the touchscreen and non touchscreen versions where I’m buying it. I’ve read that the touchscreen version has an additional layer on top of the display, which can make it more reflective. I’m not sure if that’s actually the case with the X9 15, though. Has anyone compared the two versions?

Would you pick the X9 15, or go for another laptop?

It was working till yesterday, but today when i tried to turn it on, the capslock,fu key,num key and power lights are on but no display and the fan is spinning in full speed. The charging light come on when i conmect it what to do?it is a lenovo ideapad slim3 15ARB8

Over the last year I had bought 2 laptops and accidentally broke one, I decided to take the hardwire out of the broken laptop and install it into my new one. The new laptop is a Lenovo LOQ, the old was a ASUS tuff laptop.

The drive was the main drive for the Asus, however I have not been able to get the Lenovo to see it so I can reformat it.

I’ve checked windows disk management and it is not showing up there at all, nothing used, unallocated, or visible in those menus, I have also checked the bios and I cannot see it there either. I have reseated it as well to make sure that it is installed properly.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

I’m a freshman Electrical Engineering student and I already have a beefy laptop (Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI 5070 ti) but I’m looking for something to be able to take to class and use to take notes way easier because the Acer is very bulky and I would like to find an alternatives. Hi, I'll be studying industrial engineering this year, and I'm planning to buy a notebook for my studies and daily life. I was thinking of the Asus Zephyrus G14 2025 since I've heard that it's a great mix between daily life and heavywork usage(CAD, Solidworks, MATLAB, ANSYS alongside some gaming) but the one with 32GB of RAM felt super expensive, and 16GB also didn't feel quite enough, so the question is, would 16GB of RAM be enough for my studies, and is this notebook generally decent?

Note: This is a new program, so there is no detailed description of the programs used in the 2nd and 3rd years.

I'm looking for a new laptop in Germany with a budget of around €600–800.

My main use will be university/everyday work, Lightroom and some casual DaVinci Resolve editing. I don't need a workstation or a hardcore gaming laptop, but I'd like enough graphics performance to handle occasional video editing comfortably.

What I'm looking for:

• 14–16" display
• Preferably under/around 2 kg
• Solid build quality
• 16 GB RAM minimum, 32 GB would be great
• 512 GB SSD minimum
• Good display, preferably 100% sRGB or better
• Good battery life — ideally around 7–10 hours for normal use
• No bulky/heavy gaming laptops

For graphics, I've mainly been looking at laptops with stronger iGPUs like Intel Arc 130V/140V and AMD Radeon 780M/860M or better.

I'm not limited to integrated graphics, though. If there's a laptop with a dedicated GPU that still has decent battery life, good build quality and isn't too bulky, I'm definitely interested.

I'm also open to older-generation models, if they offer better value.

My priorities are basically:

Performance > Build > Battery life > Weight

I am doing a course. Suddenly I can’t connect to the website where my course is. I had no problems connecting before.

I can connect to it on my phone or IPad no problem. But I need to use my laptop.

I have tried Chrome and Edge and it still says the site took too long to respond. I have deleted VPNs. Still no luck.
