Mod Post Please be cautious of participating in surveys of trans people

1.4k Upvotes

Hey all,

The mod team wants to remind you to please be cautious of participating with research teams and surveys that are studying trans people.

Another trans subreddit offered the following statement to their subscribers:

"Lisa Littman, a transphobic researcher who invented the concept of "rapid-onset gender dysphoria", recently asked our moderation team for permission to post about a study she's working on with Kenneth Zucker and J. Michael Bailey. We said no." The moderators went on to offer contact information in the case of this survey popping up.

There are numerous organizations attempting to study trans people right now with dubious intent. It's important that you remember to verify the source of the studies, related organizations, and the names of the lead researchers before moving forward with any of these. It's very easy for a research group to manipulate data to get the results they want.

As a reminder, however, we do allow some surveys on this subreddit, but we require all surveyors to be screened by our moderation team first. If you feel that a survey is here without being screened first, please report the post AND message our moderator team so we can take a look.

Thank you!

Good News Anti-Trans Dem Seth Moulton Loses Senate Primary to Outspoken Trans Ally Ed Markey in a Landslide

To Seth Moulton, trans kids were a liability the Democratic Party needed to abandon. But to Massachusetts voters, the only liabilities are Democrats like him.

Venting My boss found out about my transition today

So, about two months ago, my boss and I switched computers because his was being repaired and I was going on vacation. What I didn’t realize was my notes app was connected to my laptop, so he opened it to take some notes on the work he was doing, and saw a note I had written about my transition. I’ve been on HRT for 6 months.

So about two weeks ago, he told me that he knew. “Look. I want you to know that you are safe” were the exact words he said to me. And he actually kept it secret (aside from his wife) for weeks. His wife has also been super cool about it and they’ve both been really supportive. She even texted me “just wanted to tell you your skin has been glowing XO” like, they’re genuine allies.

But today. Today, he told the head boss my secret, because “I’ve been making it super obvious.” Like bro, I JUST told my parents last week, and my best friends didn’t know until two nights ago when
I changed all of my Xbox information. It was not obvious.

And now, one of my biggest secrets, and one that I was hoping to roll out on my own terms, has been taken from me. By someone who promised I was safe with them.

I was desperate to come out. I was sick of keeping secrets and living a double life. So I’m glad I’ve told the people I chose to tell. Just be careful who you trust. And don’t connect your notes app to your work computer, ffs 🤦‍♀️ goddamn APPLE

Euphoria Strange question from a stranger left me euphoric

My wife (Cis F) and I (MtF) were at Costco with our 2 young kids, when a lady came up to us and began the standard "your baby is so cute" small talk, then followed up with the question "how did you do it?"

So obviously I stare at her blankly "um...what?"

"How do you have kids, like which one of you carried?"

This is when I realized that this lady thinks that my wife and I are a cis lesbian couple, and wants to know how we were able to have children. Not wanting out myself as transgender I just point to my wife and go "she carried both."

It turns out that someone this lady is close to, who is in a lesbian relationship, used a surrogate to have a child, and was just interested in how others had done it.

While it is an odd question to ask a stranger it left me euphoric that I passed as a cis woman.

Advice Question How do I cope with not being allowed around on my sister's kids?

I've been out to my family for a year and half and I've not seen my sister's kids, six and nine years old, since then. She says that she's worried about what questions her kids would ask, she's not sure if her husband would be ok with it, and she wants me to have a better relationship with her first. I've cried most of the time I've talked to her recently because it feels like I'm not supported or accepted.

My dad agrees with her and says that being around her kids would be like forcing my beliefs on them. My mom tried to offer a compromise and say I can be around them as long as I don't tell them I'm their aunt now and have a new name.

They just don't understand or don't want to or don't care enough to want to.

Has anyone else had problems with siblings being hesitant to have you around their kids?

Celebration I got organically gendered correctly for the first time.

My fiancée (cis woman) and I are moving and after we loaded up the last of our stuff / finished cleaning up we stopped to get some drinks for the drive. Now for context my hair is unwashed, I don’t have any makeup on, I’m wearing some of my old guy clothes, and I’m sweaty and gross because is fucking hot and humid; needless to say, there’s literally nothing about that screams feminine. Before ordering we both had to use the bathroom so as we walk in we go straight to the bathrooms and without batting an eye at us the worker at the counter goes, “do you ladies need the bathroom key?” She then proceeds to open the women’s room for both of us. I still use the men’s room so this was incredibly unexpected. This was my first time using the women’s bathroom as well as my first being organically be gender correctly. I literally got back in my car after and started bawling (happy tears). I can’t even put into words how I feel. This was 2 days ago and I’m still riding the high.

Discussion "how are you trans you listen to System of a Down" was a real sentence a real human spoke at me last night.

I was offended at first but didn't say anything I thought they were criticizing/gatekeeping my transness not criticizing my tastes, but then as it just sat w me I started laughing at how ridiculous it sounded. Is there a secret list of music you can't listen to and be trans? What did they mean by that? But then it popped in my head again this morning and like I don't feel any of their songs are problematic? I don't follow any of the members on social media, are they outspoken transphobes on social media? Things don't usually stay rent free in my head people have said far worse straightforward things to me that roll off my back idk why this is sticking w me 😭

Funny What are the chances...

...the woman working the Walgreens pharmacy drive-thru in blue scrubs knows what progesterone is? 😂

Sitting here waiting for mine and I suddenly can't stop thinking about that meme:

“Nobody’s gonna know.”
“They’re gonna know.”
“How would they know?”
“They’re gonna know.”
“How would they know?!”

Because now my brain is going:

She knows.
She absolutely knows.
...but how would she know?! 😂

And the much funnier question:

Does she give even the faintest shit why I’m picking it up?

EDIT: Oh dear God.

The woman disappeared and the male pharmacist in the white lab coat with a voice approximately three octaves below sea level came over to the intercom:

“Do you have any questions about your prescription?”

Sir.

I have several, but absolutely none of them are about the progesterone. 💀

At this point the meme has become documentary footage:

“They’re gonna know.”
“How would they know?”
THE PHARMACIST HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.

Relationships Dating as a trans woman is so much better than as a man

To preface this, I am a lesbian.

Don’t get me wrong they’re absolutely still some of the same issues like compatibility or people who can’t maintain a conversation. But overall, my dating experience has been extremely positive.

As a man on dating apps, that shit used to be bone dry I was literally swiping right on everyone and hoping someone matched me. Even then, the women I matched with were usually very hesitant to open up even after weeks of talking, which led to very few dates.

Now as a trans woman, the dating apps I use are bumping I feel like I have the opportunity to be picky and not have to swipe right on every single person. I went from maybe getting a match once every week to two weeks as a man to getting multiple matches every day as a trans woman.

Not just the matching, but the conversations tend to be better. It feels like the women I match with are more open/honest with me about their goals, feelings, and expectations with dating. The craziest part in my mind was that planning a date went from something that might happen after a week to something that could happen within a few hours of matching/talking and I have actually been going out on dates more often.

The only issue is that sometimes some women do not fully read my profile and see that I am trans so I always make sure I send them a message stating that I am trans and making sure they are OK with that before planning a date. Other than that, I’ve been having a wonderful experience. Also having a beautiful woman flirt with you is fucking awesome. I have never blushed this much in my life.

Trigger Warning Almost died last night Spoiler

So I got body contouring yesterday. Surgery seems like it went off without a hitch, and I have hips and a great butt now. I know it’s too early to tell what the final results will be but I’m really happy with the outcome.

I started bleeding from one of the back incisions, but the surgery team assured me that was normal. However, when I got up off my stomach to go to bed, I noticed one of the front drain sites was soaked through, and there was a big bubble of blood under the adhesive.

My husband went to help me change it and put fresh gauze on it, but when we peeled the bandage off, blood started squirting out fast in an arc. We got pressure on it right away, but then noticed my other drain site was oozing blood. I was losing a lot of blood. Husband called 911, meanwhile I was shaking, dizzy and nauseous, going cold but drenched in sweat, mouth went dry, vision started going black. Felt like I was this close 👌 from losing consciousness.

Ambulance got there really fast. Paramedics took over, got me on a gurney and loaded in the ambulance, managed to stop the bleeding but I was doing bad. Got rushed to the hospital where they did a great job getting me stable. They’re gonna keep me here another day now.

I had to ride in an ambulance right after I got home from bottom surgery too, in so much pain I passed out. So, I’m 0 for 2 on not needing emergency services after surgery.

I feel like hell, but I still don’t regret getting this surgery. I have hips now, that’s so worth it for me. But, damn was I ever scared for a while.

Edit:

Okay everyone, followup, just got discharged. I did not in fact almost die, despite a cup of blood colored fluid shooting from my abdomen in a jet followed by dizziness and vision going dark. Apparently there is a fluid that the surgical team puts inside you to do the liposuction, not all of which ends up getting removed, and which works its way out of you slowly. Or, in some cases, quickly! I weighed myself just now, and I’m actually 5lbs heavier, so there’s a lot of fluid still in me! What I experienced was that fluid bursting out through a drain site, followed by a vasovagal response due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. It felt like I was dying, the paramedics were extremely concerned, the ER staff were concerned, it took the plastic surgery team coming in to actually explain what was going on. So, good news overall! Bad news: this might happen again lol.

Euphoria First Date

Oh my god. I just had my first date as a woman, and I feel so god damned powerful. I havent started HRT, but I had cute clothes and really good makeup and Im honestly lucky how well I can present as feminine with (currently) a lot of work and help and help from a cis female friend. They made me feel so wanted and good. It was also my first time kissing someone who was masculine presenting, which was way more thrilling than I thought it would be. I cant ever remember feeling this good before.

Good News Update on Cis Male Friend liking me (MTF/Trans Woman)

CONTEXT/FIRST POST HERE!!

Sooooooooo :) first off, I appreciate all the cute stories in the replies and the sweet ones being supportive💘 y’all helped me be more confident with this situation :) thank you all!

but ANYWAYS the date went well.. i think VERY well. He took me to this steak house place :) it was very nice and cozy in there tbh. I wore the cutest outfit I could find, Dark red dress and some heels. He was honestly soooooo handsome like he reminded me of Tom Welling back in the 2000s 🥹 I complimented him and he was flustered :) ssooooooo adorable omg!!! Well fast forward to what happened. We talked about a bunch of stuff, memories, college, or work. I was going to bring up the yk elephant in the room (elephant being the fact that I like him so much) I was ready tbh, I even practiced back home lol. But then, he brought it up. Not the fact that I like him but the fact that he likes me. So me being awkward, I probably look weird like I didn’t know what to do but stare😭 like this is literally the moment I’ve been waiting for but I got mental blocked🥲 however me on the inside was freaking out. He got scared and apologized, saying he should’ve not said that but ofc I had to stop him from that, I told him that I liked him too :) like for a looooooong time now (well I didn’t say that part but ykwim) We both have like laughter like an awkward one but hey at least me and him both know that now🥹💘 Fast forward again, we got done and he drove me home and kissed me on the cheek hehe :)

maybe he did ask to stay the night… and maybe I said yes… and maybe he’s snuggled up next to me as i’m typing this… just maybe who knows ☝️🤓

Anyways :) I wanna keep updating you all so I’ll do my best to update asap <33

Euphoria I officially shrank!

I've always been 5'8". I got that measurement when I was 17 and got my license, I've measured myself many times since then, and when I started transitioning at 39, that was still my height. When I was still identifying as a guy, it was... Ok. I was a little below average but not in short king territory. It would have been nice to be a little taller, maybe, for dating apps, but whatever.

When I started transitioning, it was also ok. I was a little taller than average for a woman but I have cis girl friends who are taller so I didn't really stand out. I could live with that!

I just had my first annual physical since before I started transitioning (... And also since I had a pediatrician don't judge me, I'm only 41 that wasn't that long ago...) And... I'm 5'7". Officially, I'm 1.702 meters, which is actually just a hair under 5'7"!

It's not a huge difference, but it brings me into the average range for women and I'm so happy!

Link I Created the First Ever Timeline for Legal Gender Recognition in the US. Our Rights Go Back Much Further Than You’d Think.

Trans people’s right to legal gender recognition is much older than we realize—older than abortion rights, Alaska’s statehood, and the Civil Rights Act. That history just became common knowledge.

Funny Y’all weren’t lying about mood effects 😵‍💫

I was not having a good day today, just minor things irritating me throughout. I was very irritable in general lol. I’m a bit under two weeks on HRT.

I was at a sandwich shop and they were completely swamped so my order took a while, this didn’t bother me like at all because I work in food service too and damn. Anyways I was the last one to get my sandwich. I wasn’t the last to order but the tickets got all shuffled and the lady behind the counter knew this and said “thank you for your patience, want another sandwich for free?”. Y’all I almost cried 😭. I’ve only cried once since I was like 15 (20 now). I had to hold it together lol that’s like the nicest thing that’s ever happened 🥹

Advice Question Was told to throw out my E after 28 days

Been under the influence for a decade and never had this happen before. Went to the pharmacy to refill my script for 3 months worth of E like i've done a thousand times before, but this time the girlie who gave me my prescription told me to throw it out within 28 days of initial use and that was also written in sharpie on the bag for my script. Same script and same E i've been on for a decade so absolutely ignoring it, but anyone else had this happen recently?

Venting being trans is ruining my hopes of finding love

I’ve always been doomed with shitty luck when it comes to dating. Sometimes i understand why and sometimes i dont. I have always been someone who dreams of getting married to this amazing man surrounded by our loved ones, where we have this deep connection that only death could bring us apart. When I first tried out dating at 18 I downloaded apps and maybe this wasn’t the best way to find my partner. But I was so hopeful. Being gay pre transition there was a lot of emphasis on the physical appearance rather than personality which i never understood but regardless I grew so hyper fixated on making sure I was “cute enough” for others. Of course, hardly any meaningful connections came to fruition which could be due to me being to focused on pleasing others and due to hookup culture. Not to mention the amount of body dysphoria I was experiencing.

Fast forward, I’m now trans and things are no better. It’s no help that I am cursed to being attracted to men, and now I struggle with the fear that men don’t like me for me, but because I’m their “fantasy”. The amount of times I’ve been told, “I was just curious in being with a trans woman” is too much to count. Fortunately, I am in a better place mentally where I don’t let comments like these affect me, but it’s heart wrenching to constantly hear it. Was it easier to find love before I transitioned? Has transitioning added on a deeper, complex, difficult layer to my love life? I don’t hate being trans, I hate how others treat me because of it. Everytime I see one of my trans sisters find their Prince Charming I sob uncontrollably because i fear that will never be me. That I am doomed to deal with men who only want to explore my body but not my soul. It only takes one, but damn, it’s like finding a diamond in a pile of moissanite. I keep trying to just focus on my transition, especially since I’m very early (7mo) but I am so hardwired in yearning for love. Will it ever get better? Maybe cis men are the problem haha.

Trigger Warning I don't know how to feel about this

Basically today i had a discussion with a friend and he said that gender and sexuallity is bad and humans shouldn't identify themselves with it, not even as non binary, i naturally didn't agree with him, but his words made me feel bad for wanting to be a girl in the first place, I WANT TO BE A GIRL, I AM ONE, but he made me think for a second that maybe it just wouldn't make sense...

Btw he's not transphobic or anything like that, he's not bad, but he can be a little bit of a pedant and if you don't agree with him he will treat you like a fool, he says he's "objective" and all that stuff, the worst thing of all is that he still identifies himself as a heterosexual cis man.

Trigger Warning I’ve locked my trauma and dysphoria behind a vault door that I don’t have the key to

I’m 2.5 years into my medical transition. Can you believe I’ve yet to cry for myself? It’s only been in the last two months that I’m beginning to be able to cry at sad movies or for other people. In those situations I tear up and it stops within seconds. I have yet to actually sob.

But when it comes to my own trauma, my dysphoria, I get a mental block. My brain goes NOPE and I distract myself with how good transitioning feels. Or what problems I need to solve. I’ve been seeing a therapist for 3 years too.

Maybe it’s 5 decades of emotional suppression that’s difficult to break through. I transitioned at 49.
