Announcement The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - An Oral History from the Game Developers

Hello everyone,

As you might be aware, I've spent time over the last few months tracking down as many of the game developers of Morrowind that I can find, and doing interviews with them to talk about their experiences working on the game - discuss certain elements of their contributions, share some anecdotes and reflect on the game nearly 25 years after its release.

I'm really proud of this, and have tried to make this as authentic and all encompassing as I can - but there's still so much more out there. Sadly I was unable to find contact details for some people. Others either didn't reply to me, or turned me down. Hopefully one day we as a community can hear their stories but for now this is the best I can do.

This is 8 hours of interviews with the game devs. My idea for uploading one long video clip is that people can cherry pick bits they want to watch - but also to encourage people to watch interviews they might have otherwise overlooked/missed had they been posted separately.

Its difficult to put down in writing the impact this game has had on my life, as I'm sure it has for many others. I'll never forget my first experience playing the game on an Xbox around a friend's house and just instantly being drawn pulled into that world. Since then I've spent countless hours exploring Vvardenfell and beyond, and the game has been a constant source of joy and comfort for me. It's a game I will continue to love and play for the rest of my life, no doubt.

I hope you all enjoy this. A big thanks to everyone who took the time to do video calls with me. It has truly been a pleasure working on this.

Discussion Did I break the game? Or Get unbelievably lucky?

I’m level five as a warrior and was running around on an early house quest. I found a temple and fought somebody who wasn’t too hard and got a full Ebony set plus a daedric war axe. That’s an amazing step up from my steel.
It’s all really heavy, so not totally practical tease all of it all at once, but also this seems to be endgame stuff? What happened? What should I do?

Question Mithril Armor Set

Post image

I first saw the mithril greaves while treasure hunting in Nenaav's buildings, and then console commanded the rest of the armor set. Which mod release is supposed to add this armor set? It had Bre in the item ID, so High Rock I'm assuming?

OpenMW Playing openMW on a low-end laptop and getting poor performance in the open-world (inside cells it's fine) any tips?

Upvotes

I'm getting worse performance outside than I get with oblivion and fallout new vegas, it's not terrible but I would really appreciate a smoother experience, I installed project Atlas but it didn't seem to change that much.

Discussion TR Player Housing

Poison Song has been great so far, and I'm very happy I picked up TR just a few months prior to PS so I could compare all the differences. However, one thing I still have not managed to do (on any version) is find player housing. Yes, I know about sleeping at the guilds, or just getting an empty house, but I was hoping at some point to run into the ability to actually own my own (non-Great House) home or at least an apartment (did I somehow miss a way to get an apartment in the Velothi Towers? I really wanted one).

Does anybody know of something like that? My inventory management is getting frustrating and I really don't want to just take some dead guy's house. I don't even care if the house is a little out of the way, as I can just use transportation magic.

Question Any ever do a no spellcrafting run? What merchant spells are most useful?

I'm thinking about doing a no spellcrafting run. I actually kind of dislike the spellcrafting system. I think it just sort of overshadowed the actual base spells a little too much. I do use it though because I can't help myself lol. I think on my next playthrough, I wanna try playing without crafting custom spells. I'm so used to using the merchant spells as fuel for custom spells that I don’t even really know which ones are good. Is there anyone who uses the merchant spells heavily who has some good ones? I'm especially a little worried about dealing damage later in the game.

Discussion Do you want a remaster/remake of Morrowind?

I don't think it's necessary, because of OpenMW, Skywind, and the Morrowind RTX Remix (which I don't really care about.). Unlike Oblivion, Morrowind has multiple projects that are trying to improve/ remaster Morrowind. Oblivion needed a remaster more than Morrowind (partially because Oblivion is ugly as hell, at least, that's my opinion), because Oblivion modding was partially dead, while Morrowind modding is going through a renaissance period. But if you do think Morrowind needs a remaster/remake, I want to know if it needs to be a remaster, or a remake.

Question Any mods that add long coats like Aragorn's?

Post image

Thinking about doing an Aragorn run, unarmored and with long blade + bow, maybe I'll wear light bracers and boots for looks. I was wondering if there were any mods that added a leather long coat like the one he wears on Fellowship. Thanks in advance!

Question How to not get bored or leave playthroughs half off

I've been playing Morrowind for a few weeks now and I finished the main story and both dlcs on three characters, now I made a few new characters to play with tamriel rebuilt without interacting with the main story or dlcs but I just get burned out halfway through the playthroughs.

I know it's probably gonna be a skill issue or I'm just a sky baby, but I'd like some ideas and suggestions to how not to leave playthroughs halfway, I love the game and I've had a lot of fun but I end up burning out with my new characters and make another one which I also get burned out of, help please and thank you.

New Player - Advice/Help Stuck on "Robes for the Mystery Play" — Xastos in Narsis doesn't sell the pink Nibenese robes

I'm stuck on the Tamriel Rebuilt quest "Robes for the Mystery Play" and could use some help.

https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Tamriel_Rebuilt:Robes_for_the_Mystery_Play

First off — I just want to say I absolutely love Tamriel Rebuilt. Like, really love it. I honestly think it's better than the base game in so many ways. This is how cities should feel — lived-in, massive, full of character. Old Ebonheart alone has been an incredible experience. I've been doing quests there for the Mages Guild, the Fighters Guild, and the East Empire Company, and I've been having a blast.

But now I'm stuck.im on Imperial Cult mission.

I talked to Valacca Prontia and followed the leads. I asked around Old Ebonheart, got directed to Narsis, and found Xastos Evorissia at the Grand Bazaar in the Market Quarter.[he said he has pink Nibenese robes]

The problem is, he doesn't seem to sell the actual pink Nibenese robes. His inventory only has regular "Expensive Robes" — two of them, to be exact. I bought them thinking they might work, but they didn't trigger the quest.

I tried waiting in-game for two full days and checked his stock again, but it never changed. Still no Nibenese robes.

Has anyone else run into this? Is there a specific way to get him to stock them, or am I looking in the wrong place entirely?

I've attached a screenshot of his inventory for reference.

Quest details from the walkthrough:
- Talk to Valacca Prontia about pink Nibenese robes
- Ask clothiers in Old Ebonheart (Imeric Geordaine or Yaguz gro-Dhaluk) to be directed to Narsis
- Ask traders in Narsis to be directed to Xastos Evorissia at the Grand Bazaar
- Find two expensive pink Nibenese robes, possibly from Xastos

I've done all of that, but Xastos only has the regular Expensive Robes.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion How do you guys manage saves across multiple devices?

Ive always had this issue where non steam games struggle to play over more than 1 device.
because of the saves.

sometimes i wana play on my handheld. Then later on my desktop
if its not a steam game i now have to manually copy files or use some archaic software that's really not intuitive.

so i fixed the problem.

i wrote a cross platform app windows, linux, android
where you can just click push saves after you are done playing.
saves go directly to google drive

on your next device just press pull saves.
then play your game.

anyone interested in it? i was going to try charge for it but i figure there wont really be any potential in that. so how about i just give. for free. anyone want?

if there is interest ill take the app out of testing mode and publish it for free.

ive been playing morrowind literally on my Ayaneo geek 1s windows, linux desktop pc, android phone and just picking up where i left off on the last device.
its just so easy. not to Todd this thread up but it just works.

Question Recommended Shaders for OpenMW

Hi, I am new to Morrowind and trying to dial in my preferred OpenMW setup.

I'm using the Expanded Vanilla list from Modding OpenMW. I initially tried the full "Graphics Overhaul" list, but it ran a bit too choppy on my rig, so I backed off to keep performance smoother.

Since I really love Morrowind's core aesthetic, I'm just looking for subtle post-processing shaders or lightweight visual upgrades that enhance atmosphere without straying too too far from the original vibe.

What post-processing shaders, or other graphical additions, would you recommend?

New Player - Advice/Help Morrowind

Upvotes

Having played Morrowind when it first came out, I poured hundreds of hours into the game back in the day...

I bought Morrowind on Steam to play on my PC - I have not had a gaming PC since the late 90s and finally bought a PowerSpec G765....

I know very little about PC games or modding (I did mod Morrowind a ton back in the day), and my PC is connected to my TV that I play on my couch so keyboard/mouse stuff is not easy...

How exactly can I locate, download, and install/apply a few mods to make the game run and/or look good?

I would love instructions as though I am 10 years old: where to go, what to download, how to apply.

I keep hearing about Morrowind OpenMW... do I just go to the website, download some executable (after I install Morrowind through Steam), and magic happens? Just looking for something to make the graphics look decent and/or the game play well

Thank you so much for any advice

Showcase Skyrim-Style Zero-Start" Challenge in OpenMW Total Overhaul (2 HP / 2 MP) — No Save-Scumming!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share the beginning of a highly experimental and brutal challenge run I just configured using the Total Overhaul mod list on OpenMW.

I’ve always felt that Morrowind characters become god-like way too fast around level 20, and the vanilla difficulty slider just turns enemies into boring damage sponges. I wanted something genuinely organic, dangerous, and modern. So, I used the NCG Lua-Edition (Natural Character Growth) mod to completely tear down the vanilla leveling rules and build a true Skyrim-style experience.

The Rules & Configuration:

  1. True Skyrim Leveling: I changed the mod settings so it is completely irrelevant whether a skill is Major, Minor, or Misc. Every single one of them contributes exactly 1 point to my overall character level. If my Athletics or Armorer goes up, my player level goes up—just like in Skyrim.
  2. True Zero Start: I forced the NCG settings to 0% start value ratio (removing all initial race/class attribute bonuses) and manually set all 27 skills to level 1 via console.
  3. Organic Growth: My attributes are now mathematically calculated 100% based on my active skills in real-time. No more min-maxing modifiers.
  4. Cleared Spellbook: To match the level 1 magic skills, I deleted every single starting spell from my spellbook via console. The only thing left is my innate Breton racial power (Dragon Skin). I start completely empty-handed!
  5. No Save-Scumming: I am NOT playing Ironman (Permadeath is just instant suicide with these stats), but I am strictly banning save-scumming. If a spell fails, a lockpick breaks, or a persuasion attempt goes horribly wrong, I have to live with the consequences. No reloading for perfect outcomes!

Meet Cedrik, the Breton Inquisitor:
Because NCG recalculated my stats from a clean slate of level 1 skills, my starting attributes are in the absolute gutter (Strength 3, Intelligence 1, Willpower 0...).

As a result, I am currently standing in the Seyda Neen Census Office with:

  • Health: 2 HP
  • Magicka: 2 MP
  • Fatigue: 12 (Thankfully, my Speed rolled at a whopping 12 due to baseline movement weight calculations, giving me a tiny chance to move).
