I’m wanting to get it to fit in an osprey daylite 26+6 (ideally not expanded so I keep as carryon on but have room for snacks etc between flights).

Planning on taking two strips of each medication with me for starters knowing I should be able to get more if I need. Just some for starters so have access immediately to hand.

Any recommendations? Does that list need trimming down further or is it already quite minimal

Do we think I’m being unrealistic to think I can pack everything into the daylite and it’ll likely be too heavy anyway for the common 7kg carry on limit?

I've been running a 35L for a couple years now, mostly warm-climate trips, and it's worked great. Took it to somewhere actually cold for the first time and my packing list just didn't hold up, I ended up wearing half my bag on travel days to make it fit. Feels like there's a real ceiling on how much cold weather a bag this size can handle.

just did 2 weeks in aussie with fair amount of mountains and hiking, and only 3d later im headed to vietnam for another 12 days! looking for some packing advice.

ive tried to pack as minimally as possible by not bringing my laptop and reducing the amount of clothes im bringing, especially because i intend to go there to shop for more stuff like waterproof jackets and pants.

1. do i still need an umbrella if im getting a waterproof jacket?
2. do i need more/less clothes? my socks and undies are disposable but also washable. im intending to do laundry but its my first time doing hostels so im unsure
3. im assuming hostels dont provide soap/towels, so is 1 microfibre towel enough? i can bring some disposable towels too

i usually stay in hotels and airbnbs so its my firstime fully backpacking, and first time going solo, would appreciate all advice! also going on the hagiang loop, and was considering bring another 15-20L ish backpack, not sure if i should.

edit: ⁠what else am i missing besides a hardshell jacket? not just for this trip, but for any future trips anywhere.

Hand luggage only. Expecting rain. One pair of shoes and one hoodie which i'll wear on the plane + throughout. Shoes are Salomon xt6 GTX

I only have one REAL hike, which is Shivapuri in Nepal, but the peak is still 10-13 degrees and I'll be roasting. Mount Emei is the problem. Not hiking, but averages 0-5 degrees PLUS bitter wind, and I'm not hiking so won't be warm at all.

I currently don't own a packable down/primaloft jacket OR a waterproof jacket (unbelievable I know) and I'm trying to understand what I should prioritise as I don't want to spend more money than necessary or take up unnecessary space.

I have two long sleeves, some vests for Hanoi, a few pairs of trousers and maybe 2 tshirts.

Anybody who has done a similar itinerary, what layer is more appropriate, and insulated jacket and then maybe a cheap poncho over the top, or just layering the hoodie with a REAL waterproof shell?

I'm (26F) doing 5-6 days each in Dublin, Galway, Edinburgh, London, Porto, Lisbon, Seville, Barcelona, Versailles, Nice, Venice, Rome, Athens, Thessaloniki, Budapest, Prague, Vienna.

Some advice on packing would be great! As you can see, there will be a lot of variation in climate. I'm planning to pack enough clothes for 7-10 days and do my laundry since I'm staying in hostels. I won't be hiking at all, it'll be mostly urban commuting, visiting museums, and archaeological sites. Also, I run pretty hot and I'm Canadian (wore a fall jacket through the Canadian winter one time because I didn't like how bulky it was) so I'm not too scared of the fall/winter weather. My bag is the bagsmart 37L expandable travel backpack.

For those if of you who have heavier bags.. I'm thinking the Aer TP4, Pakt One Travel Backpack, Peak Design, Tortuga 40 Pro etc, how much does your bag end up weighting? Do you manage to hit 7kg carry on limit or does it usually spill over ? How do you avoid getting gate checked ? What are the hacks you use to keep the rest of your pack light.

I am getting more ruthless about what earns space in my bag.

Clothes compress. Toiletries can be decanted. Supplements somehow multiply into six hard plastic bottles that are 70% air.

I am not asking about prescriptions, just normal daily vitamins/supplements. I would love a setup where I can keep the routine

without packing a separate organizer for every day of the trip.

What has worked best for you on longer trips?

Edit: I actually found a format that looks much closer to what I want. NB1 health pre-packs the morning/evening capsules and then there is one prebiotic powder. I would do their home gut test first because the routine is made for me, but after that it is basically the opposite of traveling with a bag full of bottles. I am seriously considering switching before my next trip.

I just finished four weeks traveling through northern Spain and southern France with the Osprey Daylite 26+6, moving mostly by rail and bus and averaging about two nights per destination over 14 locations. I did laundry in hotel sinks and showers. I packed too much, and I packed the wrong clothes. For this kind of fast-moving trip, I now think reducing pack volume is essential primarily because it forces you to reduce weight.

What I didn’t need

Linen chore coat: Wore it only on the flights. August was far too hot otherwise.

Lightweight travel pants: I wrongly assumed people in Spain and France mostly wore long pants in cities, even in summer. Shorts were extremely common, especially among people under 60. I could have worn khaki golf shorts and packed only one pair of running/hiking shorts.

Merino T-shirts: My biggest clothing mistake. I love merino, but even lightweight merino was too hot. I bought a navy Uniqlo AIRism shirt and a white Dry-Ex shirt, and they became the heroes of the trip. Loose synthetic shirts are cooler, handle sweat better, and dry faster. I prefer loose linen button-downs in the summer at home when I have a dryer available. But synthetics are better for sink/shower laundry and a hotel room drying line. I'll need to research full-synthetic button-downs, as I think they'd be even better for travel than synthetic tees.

Detergent sheets: Convenient to pack and better for merino, but poor odor control compared with regular detergent or pods bought locally.

Bamboo cutlery: Used zero times.

Dry bag for laundry: A plastic grocery bag works just as well and doesn’t need to be dried afterward or packed.

Nanobag: Used it for the beach, but a grocery bag would have worked fine. It's ultralight and ultracompact, but not bringing it would be one less thing to pack.

Earplugs, eye mask, and travel pillow: The free airline versions were fine. I never needed them otherwise. I had a couple nights with noisy neighbors, and my airpods with noise cancellation resolved it.

Hard glasses case: Took up space and never got used.

5,000 mAh battery: Never used it. Like most people, I tend to overpack tech.

Second power adapter: Never used it.

Rain jacket: Never used it. I had one rainy day and some sprinkles that were easy to plan around. If necessary, I could have bought a cheap umbrella.

Third shirt, boxer briefs, and socks: “Wear one, wash one, spare one” was unnecessary. "Wear one, wash one" would have worked. Synthetic shirts and merino boxer briefs dried overnight. Wool socks were sometimes slightly damp in the morning but dried quickly once worn.

Backpack rain cover: Never needed it.

Printed train and bus tickets: Waste of paper. Everyone preferred scanning tickets from my phone.

What I forgot and bought

Tweezers and nail clippers: Needed both and had to buy them.

Deodorant body spray: I never use it at home. It's something I equate with teenage boys. But it was surprisingly useful and refreshing after long, hot travel days. Available in Spain for under 2€.

Small microfiber towel: I bought Decathlon’s 39 x 55 cm towel. It was perfect for swimming and sitting on the beach while being much easier to wash and pack than a full-size towel.

What I’m glad I brought

Water shoes: Packed flat and worked perfectly for beaches. I’m glad I left my Tevas at home. My only other footwear was the black trail runners I wore every day.

Shout wipes: Unexpected MVP. I used all four that I brought and could easily have used four more.

Laundry lesson

Sink/shower laundry worked extremely well. I physically pushed myself hard on this trip and was exhausted most evenings. I would not have wanted to sit in a laundromat.

The key is clothing that can be washed at night and worn again the next day. I’m also done bringing laundry sheets for longer trips. Regular detergent did a noticeably better job preventing that persistent backpacker funk.

Merino vs. synthetic

I’m still firmly on Team Merino for boxer briefs and socks. For shirts in hot weather, loose, full-synthetic shirts were much better for me than merino in August heat.

The biggest lesson

On a trip involving constant trains, buses, stairs, station transfers, and walking to hotels, weight matters more than volume. But reducing volume helps reduce weight because you stop filling empty space with “just in case” items. The Daylite 26+6 is a great bag. I just don’t think I need that much room anymore. For my next similar adventure trip, Mexico in January, I’m downgrading to the Quechua NH500 Escape 16L. Not because I want to see how little I can survive with. But because I want a bag small enough that I stop packing things I don’t need. And even with the Daylite 26+6 unexpanded, it's very easy to pack a lot of things I don't need. While I picked up a few small souvenirs along the way, I waited until the last location to buy heavier gifts and grocery items and brought them home in a heavier-duty 1.5€ Corte Inglés shopping bag.

Hi all. I’ll be travelling to Europe for 20 days. I’m planning to carry 7 pairs of underwear and socks with me.
But this will be first time at any hostel in Europe. I’m not sure about the laundry services or how to even wash or dry my underwears and socks.

I need ideas or help from fellow experienced backpackers. What’s a good etiquette when it comes washing and drying my inners without disturbing other travellers in the dorm.

And in general, any others tips for the travel will be appreciated and helpful.

I write this because all sizer posts I could find about this bag were using old (larger) bag sizers. Officially, the bag is 2cm too long (42cm vs the allowed 40cm), but even though it was stuffed to the point where it was difficult to close, I was still able to massage it into both the Ryanair (not pictured) and Wizz Air (attached) sizers when asked at the gate. It required a little shoving as always, but fit easily within the Ryanair and Wizz air sizers with even some room to spare.

I recently got back from a week-long dance trip -- we were required to bring plenty of dance attire as well as clothes to wear after practices, making it a slightly unusual packing list. I did some laundry in the sink, so the quantities reflect that:

  • Kitsch solid bar shampoo and conditioner packed into water-tight drying bags and attached to the backpack zippers - this wasn't a problem for bag sizers at all.

Everything soft (clothes) was packed into one small and one medium Thule compression packing cube, which fit nearly perfectly into both sides of the Allpa Mini. All in all I can highly recommend this backpack, and I think I could easily fit everything I need for even a few weeks into this 20L bag so long as I am willing/able to do laundry frequently. The only thing I felt maybe was missing is the handle along the long side of the backpack that's present on my 32L Allpa, and also a waist strap, as it can still get quite heavy to carry without proper support, but I was perfectly okay carrying it on my back for 4+ hours. I'm super happy I made this purchase, can't recommend it enough, and look forward to using it for many trips to come.

Although I tend to travel with a carry on sized bag (the Osprey Farpoint 40), the extra fees for carryons for my flights on Air Canada and Frontier to the coastal Pacific Northwest finally encouraged me to figure out long-term travel in a personal item for a recent 8 day trip.

I had previously only done a 2-day trip for a funeral in a bagsmart blast bag, but that bag was too large for Air Canada, and I overpacked it so it also barely fit in the Frontier sizer. I also did not like its lack of a rigid back or straps. As I am a person with significant sizer anxiety, I downsized to a very colorful Osprey Daylite 26+6 on sale, and proceeded to overpack that bag too! It did barely fit in the Air Canada sizer if I wore my puffy jacket and put my umbrella in my pocket at least.

I am mostly looking for critiques and advice on dealing with inclement weather, which was the main reason I overpacked, but also general areas where I could trim unnecessary bulk. Also the weather ended up being entirely rain free, with the coldest temps in the mid 50s, which while typical in the PNW in August is likely influencing my perceptions.

   8. 1 smartwool merino wool long underwear top -- wore a lot, but as a sweater. Ended up being my "formal"-ish top, as it was black and demure compared to the rest of my wardrobe.
   9. 1 lightweight backpacking poncho in stuff sack -- never used, didn't rain
   10. REI trail made rain pants -- never used, didn't rain
   11. Waterproof hiking shoes -- good daily drivers, handled all the hiking well. Worn during all travel so didn't contribute to overpacking
   12. Pair of rather thick sandals -- comfy but bulky, could save a lot of space with a thinner pair as I hate walking long distances in sandals.
   13. Beanie -- not cold enough, never used
   14. Pair of merino glove liners -- not anywhere near cold enough, never used
   15. Pair of waterproof gloves with light insulation -- not cold enough and didn't rain.
   16. Puffer jacket -- Not cold enough, didn't use
   17. Sleep mask + buff + earplugs -- I cannot sleep without these, the buff is also nice for cold days, which did not occur this trip.
2. Tech
   1. Small power bank (has USB-C to charge, but USB-A to output, requiring duplicate chargers below. Could upgrade to a usb-c in and out one.)

   5. Noise canceling wireless headphones -- essential for me in airplanes.
3. Laundry
   1. Matador soap bag + bar of Dr Bronners
   2. 13L Ultra sil dry bag (I have tried laundry in smaller ones and I do not like it)
   3. REI microfiber towel -- used for the roll and squeeze, but I was in hotels which provided towels the whole time and so did not need this
      1. Note -- Sink laundry would not dry overnight, even the airsm underwear, in particular on the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island, and so I had to wear stuff to get it dry. Thankfully I am weird and like the feeling of wet clothes.
4. Toiletries
   1. Not at all a space issue, but stuff like prescriptions, comb, toothbrush and paste, floss, etc. All are from my backpacking kit and so are small and light. Prescriptions are a little annoying as the bottles are sizable, but when traveling internationally I prefer that they be in their original bottles.
5. Other items
   1. Hydrapak flux 750ml -- Pleasantly surprised by this one -- bit of a plasticky taste but does actually hold its shape well enough. Needed more water on hikes so may get a second
   2. Windproof travel umbrella -- did not rain so did not use.
6. Snacks
   1. Filled what little space remained with dense snacks like cheese sticks and macadamia nuts
      1. I have food allergies so extra food is always nice, and it keeps me much more pleasant on travel days.

Overall I was adequately prepared for all the scenarios I encountered on this trip, except perhaps wanting clothes that could look slightly less out of place in one nice restaurant I went to. I live and travel in very dry climates so I was surprised that I had to wear my clothes to dry them though.

The two real downsides to one bagging were doing sink laundry, which takes about 15-20min a day because I perform such tasks slowly, and not bringing some kind of packing cubes, so my clothes would just explode everywhere all over the hotel room when I emptied the bag to use as a day bag for e.g. hikes. Thus I will probably try to get some packing cubes before my next trip, but am unsure if I should go with compression cubes or not. This sub has given plenty of recommendations for cubes in the 26+6, so I will likely go with the amazon basics small cubes or maybe some Thule compression ones.

Three Peaks GBR made a really weird decision to list their Tide backpack as 47x38x16cm on their website, which would have absolutely put me off if I were buying it specifically to travel with. However, you can clearly see it is actually 40x30x16cm and they must have been including the handles and pockets in the dimensions. Oh well, the backpack isn't on their website anymore so I guess it's not their problem anymore. Shame as I do love the bag. I don't like cabin backpacks that are sold as exactly the dimensions allowed as they get overstuffed and end up being bigger than the sizer - this 16cm deep bag was overstuffed and now fits perfectly in the Ryanair sizer. I didn't get checked like a few others in the queue but I wasn't worried about it.

The bag itself. It's boxy and I love boxy. I love having external bottle pockets, but these ones are quite loose and don't have a way to secure a bottle, which isn't great - my 500ml bottle can come out a little too easily when using it day to day and it being put flat on floors etc. And then on the flipside, when it's stuffed full like this, it basically can't be used. I ended up clipping my bottle to the zip at the airport which could have been a problem if I got checked, but I figured I'd ditch it or just squirrel things into my pockets to make it fit. It has no other outside pockets. That's a pro and a con at different times. I like no outside pocket because no one is going to try and steal anything from it, but sometimes you do want an easy access pocket. There is a zip pocket on the inside for small items, as well as a laptop divider and a tablet divider with a strap to keep them in, and the back of the bag has a surprisingly big security pocket under the suitcase passthrough. I ended up using the security pocket as my easy access pocket for my Kobo and passport. I wish the black straps going down the front had lashing points like the similar North Face Base Camp Daypack, which would have been better for my bottle and keychain camera than the zips, as well as random stuff in my everyday life. I bought another one of these bags from Vinted in grey because I like variety, but it must be an older model and doesn't have these features, which I was a bit bummed about.

Anyway, I cheated a little bit because my partner flew two weeks ahead of me and I had her put my sandals (Birkenstock Milano) in her suitcase because I wanted a pair of trainers just in case. Shouldn't have bothered - I was fine wearing my sandals all week and barely wore the trainers. She also took some things like shampoo and toothpaste so I didn't need to bring those either. We were mostly staying at her dad's house so we had access to a washing machine and the summer sun dries everything super fast. We didn't need to bring any towels or anything like that.

When we got to her house, I unloaded everything onto the floor - doesn't look like it all fit but it did! Not pictured are my water bottle and Kobo because I put them down and forgot to include for the picture.

I spent weeks making a packing list before going and there's nothing that I forgot to put on the list, nothing I felt I missed. I just blanked on getting my Mounjaro out of the fridge before going because I didn't double check my list at the last minute. Hey, I had my first ADHD titration appointment the day after we got back. :) Going to a house with a washing machine and supplies made it easy, definitely. A bigger bag would have been nice but ultimately this was fine. I'll tell you though, the Mounjaro has helped with how many clothes I can fit into a bag.

What I didn't use? I barely used my mini Gorillapod which surprised me. I brought it to do selfies of us but we almost always found something to lean the camera on instead or had someone to take a picture for us. We didn't end up going out in the dark too much so no long exposures. I didn't use all my filters, but very grateful to have the CPL. I ended up not using my CCTV toy lens just because my 17mm was more versatile and I got lazy to change. Usually I do a whole day on a toy lens but we didn't really have a lot of "walking around with a camera" days in the end. I also didn't use all of my socks as I was in sandals most of the time. I regretted bothering with a watch as I was too hot to wear it most of the time.

What I'm really glad I did bring? The keychain camera and the phone waterproof pouch. I wasn't sure about bringing the keychain camera because I don't really like the pictures from it much, but it was so small to just clip on the zip that I just brought it anyway. We decided to go to the beach without any valuables, phones, cameras, etc. and I had the idea to put it in the phone pouch to use the keychain camera at the beach and in the sea. It was great to have this little guy just for fun snaps of us.

I am considering the New Cotopaxi Allpa 35 (the one with the water bottle holder and non removable hip belt) but has come across a few reviews and about the TPU coating being suseptible to peeling off especially in hotter or more humid climates or after being stored for a while.

Most of the photos I saw online were from the older Cotopaxis and I was wondering if anyone here had an experience with the current model or is it too soon to know?

I don't see any comments regarding them having improved the materials on this part of the bag so I'm wondering if it's just a matter of time and this peeling issue with occour with the new version as well.

Context: I am a Dynamic Positioning Operator onboard a Drillship. So, my work schedule is a 14 on and 14 off. This is my usual stuff i bring onboard with me. I need to bring along every higiene item since I can't buy them like I would in a normal travel to a land destination.

I am looking to reduce down to a 20/26L Backpack, i am wondering if bringing only 2 merino shirts would work and removing the organizer i might try that the next time.

I was also keen to bring my switch hoping that my phone and switch would remove the necessity to have a laptop, but I have been missing my laptop for a few activies when I am off duty. Not sure if I will bring it next time or just get used to not having it with me.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I spent a while looking at different bags in this sub Reddit for one that would work well for work and travel, I settled on the Antler Discovery backpack over the Osprey 26+6 and this was my first trip testing it on ryanair.

The bag is basically full and tightened down with the straps, it fits "snug" but is below the top of the red sticker.

My bag has enough clothes for a 10 day trip, toiletries, action camera and even a 16 inch MacBook pro

My husband and I travel by motorcycle and I am looking for a shoe that can be my go to off bike walking/dinner/everything shoe. I typically just travel with my Tevas, but we are starting to venture into colder and wetter climates and the Tevas with socks look I sported in Japan last November wasn't really what I was going for.

We are going to Morocco in November and I need to be prepared for the possibility of rain and colder temps. Here's my requirements:

• Must be able to pack down as flat as possible. I wear a moto boot when we are riding, so they will be packed in our panniers for most of the day.
• Waterproof
• Durable - I'm not trying to buy a new shoe every year
• No sandals - it will be cold in the Atlas Mountains and I need to be able to wear socks
• Doesn't need to be anything fancy. We mostly dirtbag it when we travel.
• I would love to stay under $150, but I can be flexible for a true BIFL shoe

I looked into Vessis but they have really mixed reviews in terms of long term durability of the sole and the waterproofing.

Any suggestions?

I have a suitcase and a backpack that are similar in capacity. Travelpro crew versapack global rollaboard (38L) and Osprey Daylight 35L. I’m curious how others decide if they will use a suitcase vs a backpack when the capacity is similar. Both a carryon sized.
I’m not really looking for suggestions on what I should use, which is why I’m not explaining my upcoming travels. I think it’s enough that I don’t have any imo obvious reasons to pick one over the other. I’m really curious what others take into consideration to see what I’m missing, if anything.

I recently picked up the Travel 500 30L bag from Decathlon and am planning to use it for my next trip to Hongkong and Japan in September. There were some questions in another thread about how it compares to the Osprey 26+6, so I am trying to provide some insights.

I packed clothes for five days. As it is still quite hot in September, summer clothing is enough. Total weight for the Osprey is 6.4 kg and for the Decathlon is 7.0 kg.

Despite having 4l more capacity (30l vs 26l), the Decathlon was pretty much packed full. The Osprey, having no internal compartments is more space efficient and also provides additional 6l when expanded.

While I could carry both bags comfortably, the additional waist belt of the Decathlon will probably be an advantage when walking longer distances. It is also removable when not needed.
