[LabB0T] Monthly Projects Megathread — September 2026

Monthly Projects Megathread — September 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
News Plexamp v4.50.4 Released
104 Upvotes
Plexamp v4.50.4
A quick follow-up to today’s release, mostly to fix a background that wasn’t behaving.
Desktop is 4.50.4; mobile testers get these as 4.50.3, so the build reaches you without another review round.
Fixed
  • Choosing the Smooth background no longer crashes the app, at the time and at every launch afterwards.
  • The Smooth background draws its gradient again instead of plain black.
  • Opening a Plex share link Plexamp can’t understand no longer crashes it.
  • macOS: the Intel download is actually an Intel build again. 4.50.3 shipped an Apple silicon binary under the Intel name, which Intel Macs refuse to open, and the links in the 4.50.3 thread now point here.
Help Audio sync off only on DVR content.
3 Upvotes
We have been noticing lately that anything we have recorded (DVR) is having issues with audio not syncing with video properly. We have been using the same setup for several years and have not changed anything other than the normal app/server updates. We also have Plezy installed, switch to that, and same thing.
TV is a Samsung QN65Q80R connected to a 3rd gen Firecube. Everything is wired, right next to each other, including the server. Oh, and the Plex server is running on Truenas Scale.
Suggestions on how to resolve?
Help Constant buffering out of no where….
9 Upvotes
Has anyone else had a buffer problem recently? Trying to watch shows like normal, I’ve had this setup for years no with minimal issues. But recently it doesn’t matter if it’s a brand new fire stick or my Samsung Tizan app, they both buffer.
Tried direct play, transcode, and rebooting everything of course…just wondering if it’s me or something with the new update I’m missing??
Help Is there a desktop music client with this view?
Post image
0 Upvotes
I'm trying to find a Plex music client for MacOS that offers something similar to the option in iTunes/Apple Music to view all tracks, clustered by album, with a single instance of the album art for each album. (Example included as a photo.) Ideally, it would let me select which columns get displayed, and let me select multiple tracks via a checkbox for adding them to playlists or marking them as favorites.
I've tried Chromatix, which seems to be the go-to for folks at the moment, but this doesn't seem possible with that one. Appreciate any leads!
EDIT TO ADD: Thought it went without saying that this isn't possible in PlexAmp, but just to cover all the bases, this isn't possible in PlexAmp, either. (Even the new version.)
Discussion Feature: Ability to create Placeholder listings, for titles I have on Disc but do not want on Server/drive, with extra info
0 Upvotes
Added bonus is if the Placeholder listing had a text field where I could write where the Physical Copy is located and what type of Disc/Tape/Media it is.
That field would actually be useful for ALL listings, since I sometimes rip the BluRay, but I own: Extended disc, 4K disc, or other niche version.
I'm pretty sure I had a Plex Server Extension that did this long ago, but are those Plugins/Extensions gone now?
I feel like it would be very useful to be able to track the Watchlist, Watch History, and modern Plex would also tell me if there was another service I could stream it on. But I'd love a "Physical Home Library" option available, maybe among the external streamer options?
Has anyone attempted to finagle this type of Feature? Is there a way I could submit feedback to request such a thing? Thank you.
News Plex for Mobile (Android & iOS) v2026.17.0 Released
60 Upvotes
Plex for Android 2026.17.0 (Google Play) Plex for iOS 2026.17.0 (App Store)
NOTE: Timings for submissions, approvals, and releases in the app stores can vary. Each release gets rolled out to users over the course of multiple days. If you don’t see the new release available for your device yet, please be patient.
NEW:
  • Add Top Played tab in the Server Dashboard.
  • Comments have an updated design.
  • Player: Force Direct Play settings option.
  • Privacy indicators to lists on the profile and My Lists screens.
  • Signing in from a community post returns you to the post you tapped.
  • [tvOS] Confirmation before exiting the app when pressing back from the home screen, with a setting to turn it off.
  • [tvOS] Refined browse page header with more compact filters and a simplified item count.
FIXES:
  • A library containing an item with a name that had invalid text encoding could fail to load.
  • Could not continue past favorite library selection without selecting at least one favorite.
  • Icons the app didn’t recognize showed a box of placeholder text instead of an icon.
  • Music on Session Details screen was displaying the wrong artwork.
  • Player: Playback from a shared server would fail to start with an authorization error.
  • Stop Playback would appear in cases where it can not be remotely stopped.
  • The app could get stuck on a loading spinner after signing in, instead of opening the home screen.
  • The loading spinner spun uncomfortably fast and popped in abruptly; it now fades in smoothly, rotates at a calmer pace, and gently pulses instead of spinning when Reduce Motion is enabled.
  • The user filter on the server dashboard was labeled “Filter by Library”.
  • [Android] Player: Some content could play no audio or the incorrect audio track.
  • [Android][iOS] Reopening season or episode selector for a new Discussion had no way to go back to the show.
  • [iOS] Fixed a crash that could occur after the app was sent to the background while searching for cast devices.
  • [iOS] Player: Airplay button could not show on some media.
  • [iOS][Android] Fixed missing streaming service logos on the availability button on details screens.
  • [iOS][tvOS] The app background could flash bright pink for a few seconds before the artwork colors appeared.
  • [tvOS] A missing background image on the watch history consent screen.
  • [tvOS] Albums with a large number of tracks were slow to open and could crash.
  • [tvOS] Automatically scroll focused file names in Find Subtitles menu.
  • [tvOS] Choosing a language in the Find Subtitles menu would leave the menu instead of returning to the subtitle results.
  • [tvOS] Crash when backing out of fullscreen playback in some situations.
  • [tvOS] Failed to update the metadata when switching between episodes on details screen for some shows
  • [tvOS] Favorited libraries from servers that no longer exist could not be removed from favorites.
  • [tvOS] Fixed opening a show from Continue Watching landing on the wrong episode.
  • [tvOS] Focus could disappear when the side navigation closed, leaving the remote unresponsive until the app was restarted.
  • [tvOS] Focusing an item in a list or grid positioned it too high on screen, and could shift the content when moving focus up to the filters.
  • [tvOS] In a playlist, focus could get stuck or jump to the wrong row after using a track’s menu button.
  • [tvOS] Leaving the app and coming back could close the side navigation and move focus to the first item on Home.
  • [tvOS] Navigating the Cast & Crew grid on TV jumped down the whole page instead of moving one person at a time.
  • [tvOS] Opening a title from the Top Shelf could show another item’s artwork or stay on the home screen when automatic sign-in was off.
  • [tvOS] Player: Starting a trailer would not focus the Add to Watchlist button, and the button could briefly appear for items already on your Watchlist.
  • [tvOS] Reacting to the only discussion on a details page made it disappear.
  • [tvOS] Selecting your account in the side navigation opened your profile instead of moving focus into the account menu.
  • [tvOS] The search field wasn’t focused when opening the Find Subtitles menu.
  • [tvOS] The side navigation could briefly appear open while the app was starting up.
  • [tvOS] The side navigation could pull focus back to the selected item for about a second after opening.
  • [tvOS] Unable to navigate between seasons on the details screen for some shows
  • [tvOS] Using the PIN pad during sign in was slow and inputs could be dropped.
  • [tvOS] When switching to a user without the side nav menus would still render left aligned.
Discussion Lyrics
2 Upvotes
Do you think Plex will ever enable embedded lyrics to be displayed like Jellyfin or are we forever restricted to lrc files ?
I have 50k+ songs in my library and don’t really feel the inclination to find them all again.
It’s really the only feature I miss when using Plex on Apple TV. I usually switch to Moonfin or Finer.
Help At My Wits End
0 Upvotes
Hey all,
I’ve been using plex for nearly a decade with no issue & able to stream over my WiFi network from my pc to living room tv but just recently (after switching internet providers I now can’t stream this way.
Both the app on tv and the site on my pc are logged on via the same network & yet it thinks I’m streaming remotely & wants me to pay for a remote pass, what?
Is there a workaround or is it just a case of I’ll have pay.
I don’t mind paying but it’s the principle of it, I’m on my network in the same house & yet now they want me to stump up cash, it’s just a money grab.
Help First episode special not playing in right order
0 Upvotes
The FXX series Adults put out an alternative pilot that on Hulu is listed as the new episode 1 of season 1. TVDB has it listed as a special with its position as “Airs before season 1, episode 1” and is critical to the story. I set the shows metadata provider to TVDB (Aired) but when I select play on the show the S1E1 episode is played. Is this excoriated behavior? I have a feeling episode 1 specials may be bugged.
Help ELI5: Why does PMC use the CPU instead of GPU for video thumbnail generation?
16 Upvotes
There’s clearly video decoders on modern GPUs. And for thumbnails, the “quality” can be “very fast” to extract those…they’re little bitty freeze frames at the bottom of the screen… how HD do they need to be?
The thing will use my GPU to decode+encode so it’s seeing /using it during a non-direct play stream, so why not use the decode to make the thumbnails?
Help Indirect Music Play
5 Upvotes
Today I noticed my Plexamp apps are playing indirectly on my Plex Web interface. Also my Plex Dash is very slow to update. I'm playing all the apps from within my home network. My remote access is working properly as far as I can tell. I'm running PMS on Windows 11 PC. Task Manager says cpu is 2%. My internet speed is 940/940 mbps. What is causing the indirect play? I have not seen this before.
Help Show vanished mid episode
0 Upvotes
I was watching 2 Broke Girls, and mid episode it started to buffer which is totally normal with Plex on my xbox. The issue is when i got tired of waiting I figured I would reload the episode, so i hit back and the page loaded for a good few minutes.. then it showed 2 Broke Girls, but I could no longer watch any of the episodes, and it didn't say it was available to wach on Plex anymore. Pretty bummed out, just wanted to see if there was a reason?
Discussion Powerline Ethernet for Plex server - reliable alternative to Ethernet?
0 Upvotes
My partner works for an engineering company and is going to be working from home, so they're sending her a powerline Ethernet setup to help ensure a reliable connection. That got me thinking: since it will be connected to the same router, would powerline also be a good option for my Plex server?
Right now, my ASUS laptop sits near my TV and the Ethernet cable runs neatly behind the TV stand, so there isn't really a problem. I'm just wondering if powerline would let me move the laptop elsewhere in the same room without running a long Ethernet cable from the router.
The server runs 24/7 with two external 5 TB drives and about a 9 TB library. Most of my content is 1080p, followed by DVD-quality content, with relatively little 4K. My library isn't expected to grow much, so it's becoming more of an archival library. I mainly use Apple TV4k for local playback and Roku remotely on occasion. I have a port forward set up for remote streaming.
I originally used Wi-Fi but had buffering with some high-bitrate 1080p content. Switching to Ethernet solved that completely, so I'm not going back to Wi-Fi. For those using powerline with Plex, has it been reliable enough for 24/7 use? Any buffering or dropouts with high-bitrate 1080p, and what kind of real-world speeds are you getting?
I'm also thinking ahead to a future laptop replacement. My current ASUS has built-in Ethernet, but if a future laptop doesn't, I'd potentially use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter with powerline. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with that?
I know Linux, NAS, and mini-PC setups will probably be suggested, and I appreciate the advice, but I plan to stick with a Windows laptop environment ( I have my reasons) . I'm really just looking for a reliable way to keep a wired connection while having a little more flexibility to position the server in the room. If reliability is not there, im ok with sticking with the current set up.
Edit - Seems like that the early responses indicate Powerline would actually be slower than wifi. If thats the case, I will likely not change my hardwired set up as wifi proved problematic for me.
Solved Xbox and Roku not connecting to my server
5 Upvotes
For the last week it's gotten harder and harder to connect to my server. Stuff would freeze, lose connection when trying to autoplay, forgot what else.
Today, I can't connect to my server. I've tried logging out of all of them and logging back in. Updating and Reinstalling every app. restarting my router. Reconnecting my hard drive. Making sure they're all on the same network which shouldn't even matter since I pay for remote access, not set to renew until April. Plex Desktop app is playing things fine. Wifi is connected. I only have 1 account.
Help Similar Artists with Apostrophe/Quotation Mark
6 Upvotes
While looking at "Similar Artists" for musicians in Plex, I've noticed that any artists with an apostrophe (') or quotation mark (") in their name won't show up. Even if they're tagged to do so. For example, I can't get "Weird Al" Yankovic to show up as a similar artist to anyone. Has anyone else run into this, and know of a solution?
