I didn't think the stock launcher was as bad as everyone was saying, since you could turn off most of the ads and crap. But I'm also a privacy nut (one of my main reasons in buying the thing was so I'd stop using the smart apps on the TV itself), so, I finally yielded to the sub's relentless plugging of Projectivy and gave it a try.

And...yes, it feels much snappier. I kinda resent the stuff that's locked behind the premium version, because the Shield is connected via my backup Gmail account rather than my primary and I won't attach any payment methods to that. But, the free edition is still good enough.

I've already made it my default launcher and disabled the other one.

Now to wait until Projectivy inevitably gets acquired by shady new owners and we do this song and dance again with another launcher.

I had this installed years ago and really liked it. I saw it didnt support 9.2.4 so I updated it along with the helper app. Cheers!

I have an older Nvidia Shield. I think the 2017-Model.

What I'm looking for in a new Player:

*Viewing DV P7 FEL Remuxes + Passthrough DTS-HD-Master/ATMOS (If possible without CoreELec in the DV P7 -> DV P8.1 way with just losing the EL layer). -> Just Via USB 3.0 or so is fine. Don't need Flex

This is for just puting something on quick and switching to something else like Netflix or so fast.

Is the DUNE HD version Homatics Box R 4K Plus a good option?

I think a saw somewhere that it has an edge over the normal Homatics Box R 4K Plus. That it has a DUNE-player that can do some things more then if you would put it on the none DUNE version. Is this correct?

And are there any new options coming? I prefer to go for something newer than the Shield for 2019 because that's starting to get old now and has the Red shift for DV or so.

I have debloated my Shield Pro, changed the launcher for Projectivy and everything but the scrolling on Plex is far from being as smooth as an Apple TV. Any idea how to make it smoother?

I had an older Samsung tv in the past and had no problem with the shield. It was the 2017 version. I switch to the 2019 pro version. I'm using a Bravia 7 tv with Samsung q990f soundbar. I use to be able to turn on the tv by just pushing the shield remote. Now I have to turn the tv on then turn on the shield. I want to use only one remote. I have all the settings onnpower control turn on on shield settings. Audio via cec. Soundbar is going through earc to earc on tv. Shield pro and ps5 hook to tv HDMI port.

I'm not sure why this is happening, but I've tested the main YouTube app, TizenTube, and SmartTube, and none of them are able to play HDR videos in actual HDR quality.

My TV doesn't detect the YouTube videos as HDR content, so I don't get the HDR notification either. It works perfectly fine with Remux files, including both HDR and Dolby Vision, so I'm not sure what's going on with YouTube.

Is this because of missing AV1 codec?

Been having this issue for a week where kids videos plays fine at the start but if I forward it then it continues to buffer. If I go into a video midway through then the same issue applies with buffering.

It’s such a strange issue because other videos I can skip halfway and no problems at all. Any idea with what the issue is?

Should I buy a NAS if I already have a nvidia shield?

I'm thinking upgrade to 16tb of movies, music, photos and videos.

My only real usecase for it would be playing video files from USB, or external HDD, on my TV in 4K. Support for Dolby Vision and Atmos would also be great.

Phones and computers usually have an obvious upgrade cycle, but streaming devices are a little different.

​My exact use case & requirements:

​100% Media Consumption: Zero interest in official streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, or Prime.

​Primary Sources: Stremio, Kodi, Plex, and local playback via external hard drives.

​Quality Standard: Highest possible bitrates and formats only. I need seamless Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and pristine lossless audio pass-through to my 5.1 AVR (TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, etc.).

​The Goal: Pure, unadulterated performance. I want the absolute peak currently available on the market.

With this new Android Marketplace stuff going into play, I wanted to reset my Shield Pro to factory and set everything up while offline.

I've already heard of Monet launcher, so I grabbed that APK. I'm sure there's tons of stuff that's happened since I last dipped toes into setting up my Shield and there's likely lots of stuff I should be privvy to.

How do I become aware of said stuff?
What I mean is, like; is there a list of useful apps to run on a Shield, or maybe settings I should set in the stock version of the OS to prevent updates from ruining anything? Are there good setup tutorials, articles, hacking or modding guides, or anything else the reddit community might find useful to a dude who hasn't touched his Shield in almost 4 years?

Well, this got a lot more discussion than I expected 😄

I think my original idea was trying to put too much into one box.

A new Shield probably doesn't need to be a NAS, Zigbee hub or run a huge LLM locally. The better idea is a great $250–300 media/gaming box that connects everything rather than does everything.

Give it modern hardware, AV1, HDMI 2.1, great codec support, next-gen Nvidia upscaling/HDR and GeForce Now. Let it integrate properly with things like Plex/Jellyfin, Home Assistant and existing smart-home systems.

And I probably shouldn't have said “local AI assistant”. Hybrid makes much more sense: keep simple/private actions local and use remote compute when needed — basically the same philosophy that already makes GeForce Now possible.

The funniest thing I learned from this thread is that a lot of people really don't want “AI” in their Shield… while sometimes describing features they'd actually like that would probably use AI underneath. So maybe the answer is simple: don't sell the AI, sell what it can do.

I still think there's room for a premium streaming box like this. Whether Nvidia has any interest in making it is a completely different question.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies — including the people who completely disagreed. The idea I have in my head now is actually better than the one I posted two days ago.

I own a Shield Pro and I honestly don't understand why Nvidia hasn't done this yet.

Take the Shield, give it modern hardware, HDMI 2.1, AV1, 2.5Gb ethernet etc. That's already enough for me to buy a new one.

But now add a local AI assistant.

Not another Alexa/Google Assistant that can basically set a timer and tell me the weather. A real assistant that can interact with the Shield, Plex, your NAS, your TV and your home.

Then put Zigbee, Thread and Matter support in the box.

That's it.

You now have one device for streaming, Plex/Kodi, Geforce Now, AI and home automation.

"I'm going to bed" -> TV off, lights off, shutters closed, cameras armed.

"Who's at the door?" -> camera appears on the TV and the local AI tells you what it sees.

"Find me a sci-fi movie I haven't watched yet" -> searches Plex and your streaming services.

Nvidia already has Shield, Geforce Now, the AI hardware/software and years of experience with local AI processing.

They already did half the work.

Call it Shield AI or whatever and take my money.

Seriously, what am I missing?

About, once or twice a week, the Disney Plus app needs us to log back in on our shield. We launch Disney, and it asks for us to log on as though it's the first time we're launching the app.

We went through and logged out of our Disney account on all other devices, and we cleared the app cache. It still keeps happening.

Other apps behave fine and stay logged in like normal, and we don't really use the Disney app on any other devices right now.

Any other suggestions?? Pretty tedious to have to get my phone and login through a QR code every time this happens.

As the title says. Is there anyway to retain this old launcher style of the shield tv pro. It arrived today and works really good and fast but even after disabling auto updates the android tv home updates to the version with ads. I can update in the play store to get the option to uninstall updates and it will go back to how it shows in the picture but is there anyway i can do this permanently?
