I have been reading about strategies for handling email. I signed up with ProtonMail and have been creating aliases with SimpleLogin, basically in the service.randomwordsandletters format. This was working fine and I transitioned about 150 different online services to using an alias, but then when I tried to login to my PSN account I noticed they had banned my account. I looked online and I found that a lot of people using SimpleLogin accounts have had that experience, and I also noticed that services like eBay and GitHub refused to accept an email with a SimpleLogin domain as a valid address--something I wish Sony would have done instead of accepting it and then banning my account after-the-fact.

Well I have been doing some more research into this, and I have noticed people using a strategy of setting up a custom domain, or two custom domains, where they use one in the format of @firstnamelastname.com for professional and personal contacts or important things like government/financial accounts, and then use a second domain of @randomwords.com and use it as a custom domain with SimpleLogin or some other aliasing/forwarding service. I like this idea, although I would personally prefer to forego using something with my legal name and use a pseudonym--not for anonymity, but I just would rather expose my full legal name as little as possible; I know it will be anyway, but might as well not do so in the email addresses.

The real question I have is whether or not a custom domain really makes a difference for the problem I'm seeing? Would eBay and GitHub refuse a custom domain name just as they would refuse a domain associated with SimpleLogin? Would Sony ban my account after-the-fact if they saw me using some random domain name? I understand that even if I'm using a custom domain, there's still ways to see I'm using SimpleLogin, and so any filtering that's considering more than just the domain-name would probably still become problematic. In addition to this, I don't really know how spamlists/blocklists work, and as far as I know there's some kind of reputation issue where a random domain name with no reputation might be just as likely to be blocked as one with a bad reputation?

May be a weird question, but is it safe to use an alias for your steam account, gog account and nintendo switch account? Or they flag them as disposable?

I'm trying to migrate from Google Workspace to a Gmail account and as such want to redirect my personal domain somewhere.

I've created an alias in SimpleLogin and forwarded it to my Gmail account. It's working well, despite the sender name sometimes looking a bit off.

However, I've noticed that lots of emails are now going into spam. I've manually flagged many as being genuine, but it's not seeming to have an effect. I've now created a rule to say anything from SimpleLogin should not be sent to spam, but now all emails are coming through with a warning basically saying it would've gone to spam but the rule has overridden it.

So it is technically working now, but would be nice to not need that rule or have the banner appear above every email. Is this normal?

Hi all, I wanted to get some clarity on something.

First a scenario I encountered a year ago...

A while ago I was applying for some jobs on Linkedin and some of those were "Apply with LinkedIn". I wanted to ensure I created an alias for each application so I did so (custom domain) but after a few applications I got an email from Proton stating "Several accounts created for Linkedin". I'd breached the terms of service of SimpleLogin and was at risk of having my account disabled. I wasn't aware that by creating an alias for each of these "Apply with LinkedIn" applications I was actually and inadvertently creating mutliple aliases for LinkedIn. I deleted the extra aliases and reverted to using only one LinkedIn alias for these "Apply with LinkedIn" applications. Not ideal but I don't think I had any other choice.

Fast forward to today and I'd like to understand a bit more about how to approach this with custom domains and what the correct protocal would be.

New scenario (as an example)...

Using a custom domain I'd like to create an alias for Amazon for each member of my household. So that would mean...

Based on the previous scenario, that would mean I need to create 4+ aliases for Amazon but doing so would breach the terms of service of SimpleLogin again so obviously I'm not able to do this.

So what is the solution to this? I have a custom domain shared with my family, who would all like to have their own accounts (Amazon, Instagram, X, Netflix, Spotify etc). What is the correct approach for each of us to have our own accounts on these services without breaching the SimpleLogin terms of service?

Also, how would introducing a 2nd custom domain (within the same SimpleLogin account) help, if it all (for example half of us using 1stcustomdomain and the other half using 2ndcustomdomain) - obviously this is not ideal because we'd be spread across multiple custom domains.

What I want is a solution for my family to be able to create multiple accounts for the same service (e.g Amazon) on our custom domain, without breaching the SimpleLogin terms of service.

Question, so for this message in the dashboard, does that work even if you turned have the alias turned off? Also, is there a way to see a longer duration than 14 days?

I'm not a fan of being tracked all over the internet, and retail companies aren't particularly known for respecting and keeping people's data secure. However, retailers and delivery companies do expect me to use the same email address for online shopping and managing deliveries, and that is a way for packages to be automatically linked to my account in delivery apps. Some retailers don't even include all the essential information in their emails that I need to pick up the package, or even to know that it's ready for pickup. Adding packages manually doesn't always work. I don't want to risk losing a package because of this.

Some delivery companies link packages using phone numbers instead, and some require both the email and the phone number to match. They also all know my real name (which is unique) and where I live, so it feels like I wouldn't actually be reducing tracking by much if I used unique aliases for every retailer instead of one alias dedicated to online shopping and their stupid memberships.

Do you still think it's worth it?

In settings, SimpleLogin has the option:

Include original sender in email headers

SimpleLogin forwards emails to your mailbox from the reverse-alias and not from the original sender address.
If this option is enabled, the original sender addresses is stored in the email header X-SimpleLogin-Envelope-From and the original From header is stored in X-SimpleLogin-Original-From. You can choose to display this header in your email client.
As email headers aren't encrypted, your mailbox service can know the sender address via this header.

I need help understanding this. Especially the part where it says 'As email headers aren't encrypted, your mailbox service can know the sender address via this header.' I am using SimpleLogin with Proton. So does this mean that checking 'Include sender address in email headers' make it less secure?

Is it possible to share a custom domain with other users?

I have a cheap custom domain for SimpleLogin. For it to really work as an alias, more people need to use it, not just me, right?

What if I want to share my domain with the world, ie a small group of select people?

I wasn't sure if they stored locally only and I had to back them up with a key somewhere. Some authenticator apps (I no longer use) acted as local only with no cloud sync and that caused some problems since they didn't specifically state that.

For instance, if I wipe my device and redownload the app to login again, will everything still be there?

Being an email service, I would assume everything is tied with the account but I just wanted to confirm with y'all.

I found on Android that if you're on a website and you go to the browser menu to select 'share', you can share with the SimpleLogin app (if it's installed) and it will open the create alias dialogue with the website name automatically filled. So with my SimpleLogin settings and personal domain I would get an alias automatically filled like [reddit.word@domain.com](mailto:reddit.word@domain.com)

(I should say that I have in my SimpleLogin account settings enabled "Include website address in one-click alias creation on browser extension". I don't think this setting is available in the Android app though, so it has to be accessed by another means, such as by logging in on a browser.)

For reddit.com I would get an alias like reddit.word@domain.com. But this falls down when the domain has a second-level label. For example if the website were reddit.co.uk it would get the alias co.word@domain.com.

Few different parts to this. I currently have a free proton mail account that is only used for bitwarden and want to keep it that way. I have been thinking of getting proton pass plus mainly for the use of aliases, use a different alias for each account I have. I already use bitwarden as my password manager so don't intend to switch to proton pass. On the storage part, pass plus comes with 10gb, does that also count towards mail storage? Is that 10gb shared across all proton services? With my free proton mail account, I have 1gb of storage and realize that would not be enough once I start using aliases for all my accounts. Also, seen posts saying people on paid plans get a storage increase for free each year. Does that count towards any paid plan or just the ultimate plan?

Been thinking of getting my own .com domain through something like porkbun, not set on that but do see that recommended a lot. For the domain name, seen many say to use part of name but not sure I want to do that. Would rather not have my email itself say anything about me. Although not sure how much that matters if I use aliases. Once I do get the domain setup on proton, will there be 2 different inboxes, 1 for the porkbun domain and another for the actual proton mail address? Would I use aliases through the domain address or the proton address?

For those that use aliases, have you ran into any issues with certain sites not accepting aliases? For important things like banking, insurance, is it better to use an actual email instead of an alias? Although will not be common for me, can I reply to an email with an alias without exposing actual email?

Currently, I am just focused on a domain and aliases, head is spinning enough dealing with this. Down the road, I can see myself possibly wanting to get out of the google system. Even though I use 2 different gmail accounts for all my accounts, neither of them get much spam mail at all. I know it is more about the privacy aspect. From the reading I have done, seems like the hardest part would be getting away from google photos. Will worry about that when the time comes, who knows what will change by the time I get around to that.

One last thing, I found this after I started thinking about using porkbun but I seen a reddit post with a link to a linkedin post saying proton has made a partnership with proton. This post was from 1 year ago. Not sure exactly what this means.

EDIT: After thinking about this, not sure I want to use a different alias for each service. Seems like it could be a bit of a hassle to manage the aliases, at least how I do things. Lets say I go through with aliases, every one of my accounts has a different alias that points towards the domain I added to proton. What if I was to move away from proton/SL for whatever reason, would I have to change anything with the aliases?

I want to set up a SimpleLogin alias so that all emails arriving at that alias get automatically forwarded not just to my own inbox, but also to several people in my circle (family/friends) who don't use SimpleLogin.

From what I've understood so far:

• The way to do it is by adding each person's email as a mailbox on my SimpleLogin account.
• Then assigning all those mailboxes to the same alias, so every email that hits the alias gets forwarded to all of them.
• The issue is that each new mailbox needs to be verified via a confirmation email, and the link expires quickly.

My questions are:

1. Is this still the recommended way to share an alias with several people (using multiple mailboxes on one alias)?
2. Has anyone set something like this up for several contacts (family/friends)? Any tricks to make the verification process smoother?

I'd like to make sure I'm not missing a specific feature or a better pattern for this use case.

A review I wrote on trustpilot.com wasn't published because I gave them an e-mail alias. WTH... More and more websites won't accept e-mail aliases, I guess I'm going to have to buy a domain at a reputable TLD...

I was unaware that there was a limit of 40 characters for the local part (before the @) of an alias. The way I found out was when I tried importing aliases which I've been using with my custom domain with another provider. I imported most of my several hundred aliases successfully, but noticed that there were a dozen missing in SimpleLogin after the mass import. I investigated to see which hadn't imported and realised that it was the really long ones.

This limitation has ramifications. Potentially people cannot use their custom domains with SimpleLogin if they are not allowed to import or otherwise create these long aliases which have historically been used with their domain. In my case it's OK - I've managed to change my email address with most of the services, and am able to 'sacrifice' the ones which I cannot change.

I'm posting this for two reasons. One is just for the record - so that people might be aware of a limitation before trying to migrate from another provider to SimpleLogin. Secondly - might the possibility of raising the character limit be considered?

By the way, the reason for such long aliases was that it allowed me to include a long part of a service's URL to help me keep track of which part of their service the alias related to.

Also by the way, I do realise that this won't affect many...

Edit: I found a workaround. I enabled catchall for the domain and sent emails to the aliases I wanted to create. SimpleLogin automatically created the aliases, even though the local part of each address was greater than 40 characters. Then I disabled the catchall.

I’m trying to understand how SimpleLogin directories work.

For example, my boyfriend and I each have our own SL account, why can’t we both use the same directory names, abc for example, if our emails ultimately forward to different mailboxes?

I would have expected directory names to be unique only within each account. Is there a technical or security reason why they’re globally unique?

Hi there. I'm new to using SimpleLogin and email aliases in general, and I'd like to get it right from the outset, so I'm hoping you can help me pick a strategy for choosing and using aliases.

I'm using Proton Mail + SimpleLogin, managing logins using Proton Pass.

My priorities are account security and spam prevention. I don't care about anonymity in most cases, since almost all of my accounts are for things like banks, stores and services that require my real name anyway.

All my accounts have long, unique, randomly generated passwords, and 2fa is enabled wherever possible. I want to have a unique alias for each service, and by knowing my email address for one service it should not be easy to guess my email address for another service.

At the same time, I don't want humans to be puzzled whenever I tell them my email address (e.g. if I call a customer service line, or if a store clerk is looking up an online order).

I have a few domains I can use (which are not actually the domains I'm posting here, obviously):

• flastname.com (f = my first initial, lastname = my last name)
• randomdomain.com (a couple of English words with .com at the end)
• dm3.net (a 3-letter alphanumeric .net domain name)
• smthg.com (a 5-letter .com domain name that isn't an English word)

My current plan is:

• Add firstname@randomdomain.com as a custom domain/address on Proton Mail, and use that as my main mailbox, where all SimpleLogin emails will be sent. I will not use this email address anywhere else or post it publicly. All outgoing emails will be sent via reverse alias.
• Use servicename.a1b2c3@flastname.com for most services where I need to use my real name (a1b2c3 = random alphanumeric string).
• Use fl123@dm3.net for services where I'm likely to need to give my email to another human being, e.g. a hand-written form, over the phone (fl = my first and last initial, 123 = random 3-digit number).
• Use a1b2c3@smthg.com for services where I don't need to use my real name, or services where I need an email to sign up but will discard the account immediately (a1b2c3 = random alphanumeric string).

My questions:

1. Does this sound reasonable? Too complicated?
2. Is using @flastname.com in aliases a bad idea (keeping in mind that I'm not trying to be anonymous - but there might be security implications I'm not thinking about e.g. in case of data leaks).
3. Is using 'servicename' in an email alias a bad idea? I could just use a1b2c3@flastname.com instead and cut out the service name altogether.

I do want to use alphanumeric strings to make the email addresses difficult to guess (e.g. if my email address for Walmart is walmart@flastname.com then it's easy to guess that my email address for Amazon is amazon@flastname.com, which I don't want).
