Hello! I’m interested in interpretations of this song. I find the lyrics “life’s a bummer when you’re a hummer” curiously counterintuitive and would love everyone’s thoughts.

In my mind, a “hummer” is a peaceful, cheerful, optimistic daydreamer who refuses to fall victim to the cynicism of society. A hummer is someone who discovers joy through their dreamy outlook on life, rather than being weighted down by negativity.

Thus, saying life is “a bummer” and “a drag” feels out of place and thus I’ve kind of come to believe that the lyrics are either:

1) saying life is “a bummer” or “a drag” in a sarcastic way, as in that’s how society wants or expects hummers to feel, like the rest of society - when in reality a hummer would just laugh off this cynical idea of life because they don’t get dragged down. Almost as if saying “life should be a bummer! A drag!” and hummers just shrug it off.

2) commenting on how as a hummer, the reality of society’s cynicism and pessimistic outlook on life can be a drag. Life itself will never be a bummer, but rather the life portrayed by the rest of society - leaving the hummer feeling like an outcast who simply refuses to conform to society’s more cynical view of reality.

The lyrics also say “happiness will make you wonder, will I feel okay? It scares the disenchanted far away.” This aligns with the above interpretation, as it’s literally describing a hummer as being enchanted - experiencing a happy state of being - which scares the disenchanted away. So again, commenting on how being a hummer in a dream-like state of mind is about discovering happiness, rejecting cynicism, and refusing for life to be “a bummer” or “a drag” even when it’s what society expects a hummer to feel alongside everyone else. Being a hummer is refusing to let society turn you into a bitter person and enjoying the dreamlike existence of reality.

Hey everyone! I’m a fairly casual smashing pumpkins fan who was introduced to them a while ago but by their major hits. I’ve listened to everything on Siamese Dream and I really like it. I’m also familiar with other big songs from the 90s like bullet with butterfly wings, drown, 1979.

Off this alone, I bought tickets to their concert in Montreal on October 9th.

I see they have a pretty big discography and have released a lot of music even in the 2000s.

I guess my questions are where should I start? What should I expect to hear at the concert? Are the live shows more of their recent stuff or the classics? What should I listen to before seeing them? Thanks

anyways, while I’m here, might as well ask what settings you guys run for these and your amps while using them, I feel like the settings I have dialed in on the muff and phase 90 are pretty good

The Process
The goal was to get this fully completed in one afternoon so I didn’t use any of my actual amps, cabs, or pedals. Quick and dirty was the name of game. The backing track is the original (remastered) Siamese Dream version with the guitars removed by Logic’s stem splitter. Then I recorded all my guitars through a Quad Cortex Mini using their built in JCM 800 and a capture of an op amp muff. Flanger and another boost added for the leads. Slow phase 90 for the intro. It was all shot on my iPhone using the Kino app. Two rhythm tracks panned hard left and right. Les Paul on the right. Definitely not going for a tone match; I leave that to Eddie. Mostly looking for the right energy. All the takes are live with no edits what you see is what you get.

The Why
First off Cherub Rock is a ton of fun to play. The Strat copy I play is a guitar that has been sitting around longer than I’d care to admit. Last week I decided to do something about it. I put in the BC DiMarzio pickups, got new tuning machines, and a new nut (plus the bat sticker). Once I picked it up Cherub Rock just felt natural to play on it.

Back when SP was looking for a guitarist I, like many others, put my name in the hat. With my touring experience and deep knowledge of the songs I thought I would be a good fit. But alas they weren’t looking for me. Since then I’ve toured Europe twice, done two short north eastern US tours, recorded and released albums with two different bands, and two singles with a third. But it’s always been in the back of my head. The band that got away. I’ve been thinking to myself, am I good enough to cut the mustard? So I thought it might be enlightening to do a play-through of a full track with all the parts. Done in a mostly live manner, with no editing.

saw the show the other day and was a bit distracted by the projections in the background. As an illustrator myself, it was screaming AI generated to me. I also couldn't find who made these illustrations or animated them, maybe someone here knows more about this?

Any local fans should check this band out. Doing 2hrs of Pumpkins, both unplugged and full electric!

In all seriousness, if people hadn't heard, he said the mixes were done and should definitely be out by the end of the year unless something happens with physical production. I believe he said the album is remastered and approximately 17 to 18 extra songs will be included.
