I just came out of an interview that honestly made me feel very uncomfortable. I had applied for an Embedded Firmware Developer role, and it fits what I studied and also the thing I love doing. But one of the first things the interviewer said was: "Oh, I thought you were a guy. I didn't realize you were a woman."

For the rest of the interview, I kept feeling like she was questioning whether a woman could handle a position like this or not, especially since it involves some on-site work. Even though the truth is I have absolutely no problem going on-site.

She asked me why I got into this field, but the way she said it made me feel like I had to justify my presence there. Then she started talking about "passion" and said something along the lines of: "Most men are more interested in electronics. They think about circuits all day."

She downplayed the embedded projects I completed during my degree, as if she was implying they weren't that important because they were coursework and not personal projects I did on weekends. I understand that employers want to see initiative outside of school, but her approach made me feel like she had decided from the beginning that I wasn't serious enough because I don't have many hobby projects.

Then she said that being attractive doesn't really help in a role like this, and told me not to take it the wrong way. Like... Okay? I was just trying to look professional and leave a good first impression. I even wore my glasses because I thought they might make me look a bit more "technical," which feels ridiculous now.

And this has happened before too. In another interview for a Mechanical CAD Drafter role, I was dressed neatly, and the interviewers kept emphasizing that the job wasn't just desk work, and that it also involved site visits and field measurements. One of them looked at me in a way that made me feel like there was something else behind what he was saying. Idk... Maybe I'm making it a bigger deal than it is? But I felt like it was assumed I wouldn't be okay with field work just because of how I looked and dressed. As if I only wanted a clean office job.

Honestly, it's really exhausting.

Ask ChatGPT to tailor your resume to a job posting and it will do it. It will also do it differently the next time you ask, because sampling makes the output vary run to run. That is fine for drafting prose. It is a problem when you need to know whether a specific document clears a specific employer’s filter.

I'm what you might call a forward deployer leader - a fractional CAIO. I've increasingly seen FDE roles as the next big thing in AI adoption, but I'm having trouble seeing how this stacks up. Way I approach it, I normally leverage an audit into a fixed term role - usually with knowledge-based companies (as opposed to software etc).

My gambit: raise fluency and literacy, empower and support people in being able to fix shit that's broken, and essentially make the whole org self-sufficient. If they then need an engineer for something, they can actually explain what they need and ideally just bring them in a FTE rather than a mercenary so they don't stick out like a sore thumb. Typically seems to work.

Main reason I do it this way is all the barriers I saw while getting my stripes were all about people (eg. fear, not knowing, arrogance, depts not speaking to each other, unclear processes, etc) For an engineer, I imagine they are going to struggle getting access, likely to be working in a silo, and won't have the clout to align c-suite nor get people to redesign processes. Further, I don't wish to be rude or generalise, but pretty much all my SWE/IT mates are ASD lvl 1 at a minimum and generally despise human interaction - which is kind of essential for the job. Also, aren't all FDEs essentially company-owned? So you can't actually be impartial or platform agnostic?

I guess what I'm looking for is evidence that FDE posts actually deliver the value the tech firms they rep promise. I had a scan of posts on here and largely found FDEs who think its all a fugazi - they are wearing far too many hats, get waylaid by internal friction, and are just vibe coding shit that breaks all the time because they are getting pulled in too many different directions - but keep at it anyway because it pays.

Does anyone here have any evidence to the contrary? My gut is that FDEs are getting shopped out as FDLs, but lack my background so fall down at the people hurdles. I'm thinking what we probably need is more like a specops unit which has FDEs, FDLs, and probably some operator and commercial type folks too who know how to AI?

EDIT: for the record, I didn't use AI to write this. I do frequently use VTT, but I'm a former journalist so reaching for the keyboard is a tough habit to break.
