A few months ago I made a post - and a promise to follow up.

So here's the news - our winter wheat is projected to be 25% down, according to the people who measure these things.

I take no pleasure in being right, this time. I will continue to be right though, as always.

It's flaired humour, because dark-humour is still humour.

I actually spotted this car in Nairobi, Kenya and took a picture of it, which I then posted on this South African subreddit. What I found interesting was that someone commented on my post saying they had seen the same car listed in a Ugandan Facebook group last year.

I had no idea about the Ugandan listing before posting the picture, so that caught my attention. It’s just interesting that I happened to see the car in Nairobi and then someone recognized it from an old Ugandan listing.

I’m not saying there’s anything suspicious going on with the car, but I thought the coincidence was interesting and wanted to see if anyone here knows anything about it or its history.

I always like to remind people, it is much more pleasant to be the person paying the tax, than the person trying to rely on social services.

This morning, I listened to Lorenzo Davids and Lester Kiewiet speak on CapeTalk, addressing an oped in the Sunday Times (unfortunately paywalled) by the former, video found here:

They spoke about what feels like an obvious problem: Group identity and grievance heavily influencing our political and social climate taking precedence over development from a collective standpoint. It feels like a distraction from the real work, and disrupts attempts at the unity we need to pull us forward.

I know it's reddit and things are on the negative side, but just a glance through a couple of posts here and the comments within them. (Man trips woman on 10km race, Image of middle finger to DA poster, the relentless negative commentary against political parties such as the ANC and the DA despite their flaws).

It feels obvious to me that this is a problem, if not THE problem. But I'd like to know whether others agree? And if not, why not?

I was at Checkers Potch on Saturday. I bagged some groceries and went to weighing machine. It was not working. So I thought I will ask someone to help me after I am done with buying some stuff from the deli. I went to the deli counter and wait for my turn. I was busy with my phone, when I noticed a lady putting something in my cart. I was about to tell her that she may have mistook her cart as mine. I looked at what she put, and it turned out to be groceries I had bagged and hadn't weighed. She took it on herself to weigh and tag the groceries along with her stuff. I walked upto her and thanked her profusely for helping me out. She said she had noticed me awaiting my turn at the weighing machine and walking off when it wasn't working. So, when she got someone to help her, she thought, she will get my bags tagged as well. I couldn't thank her enough and took her for coffee at Woolies. Humanity flourishes on shoulders of these giants.

I'm 'glad' I have kidney stones in 2026 and not 1750.

I remember it was a very old way to have basic news and sports info shown on a TV and you scroll to the page you want by pressing the associated labeled page. I also remember it was shown on SABC 2 if you press the text button on DSTV decoder.

Does anyone remember when it was discontinued?

I'm posting on behalf of a friend because she and several other employees are genuinely scared to stand up to their boss and I'm trying to understand what their options are.

She works for a small company with two bosses/directors. One of the two is generally fine, but the other has increasingly created what the staff feel is a hostile and intimidating working environment.

There have been a number of issues, including:

• He has a tendency to become extremely angry and throw his weight around when something inconveniences him.
• He has made inappropriate and, on some occasions, racist remarks towards staff.
• He has spoken to staff in a demeaning and disrespectful manner.
• There is a general feeling among the employees that they are constantly being monitored and that nobody feels comfortable challenging him because they are afraid of the consequences.

The CCTV system appears to record audio as well as video. Staff were told that the system records audio, and the boss has apparently listened to conversations through the cameras. Employees were not aware that their conversations were being recorded in this way and are unsure what consent, notification or other legal requirements were followed.

Customers also have private conversations with staff inside the premises, so there is concern about members of the public being recorded without knowing it.

There is also an external/doorbell-type surveillance system which appears capable of capturing audio outside the premises. So if you're walking by the premises, he is listening to your conversations.
One employee was told that the staff Wi-Fi had been restricted because management believed employees were spending too much time on social media, which has added to the feeling that staff are being heavily monitored.

There was also an incident involving the cleaner.
She made what appears to have been an innocent mistake at work. The boss became angry, spoke to her very disrespectfully and sent her home during her shift. The staff have since apparently become aware that he is looking for another cleaner without her knowledge, while she is still being expected to continue coming to work.

The biggest problem is that everyone is terrified of him.

Nobody wants to be the person who raises a formal complaint and then finds themselves being targeted, disciplined or dismissed. They also don't know whether some of the things happening are actually unlawful or simply terrible management.

The surveillance issue is particularly concerning. We are not talking about ordinary CCTV where everyone knows cameras are present. The concern is specifically that conversations are being recorded and listened to, including conversations between employees and customers, and that employees may not have been properly informed about the audio component.
For those familiar with South African labour law, POPIA, RICA and workplace surveillance:

What would you suggest these employees do?

They don't want to destroy the business or cause unnecessary drama. They simply want to know what their rights are and how they can protect themselves before taking any action.

Any advice from people familiar with South African labour/privacy law would be greatly appreciated.

I'm about to have a braai. In the bag are steaks, deer sausage, chicken drumsticks, ribs, bacon sticks and some sour marinade. I'm limited with the ingredients I can order abroad, but spur marinade is the best I can find.

The weather is cloudy, windy and I'm the only one outside. Clicked my braai tongs already, the coals are heating up and I'm wearing my BOKKE away colours after yesterday's win.
