Hi, I’ve just published a new interview with Oakland by way of Memphis producer-DJ Daria Lourd, aka Bored Lord.

While her profile skyrocketed after lockdowns because of the DJ edits she was doing, in 2024, she dropped the Bored Lord alias and released an album under her own name. That record is one of the best things I’ve heard in years—a half-time ambient dub masterpiece, slow burning deep grooves. She has also just released a new album as Darlynn, a collaborative project with her wife, on San Francisco label Dark Entries.

Here’s my favorite quote from the interview:

“But the rappers really fucked with us, and we worked with a lot of rappers in Memphis because of that.They were just like, What y'all are doing is cool, and I think they got the ethos. Because that's a hip-hop ethos, too. At the time, one of our friends joked that we were kind of like if Three Six Mafia had listened to Boards of Canada, or something. That was kind of our M.O.”

Ok it’s September so feels like I can finally start really geeking out with excitement about my first Making Time. I don’t think I’ve ever been so overwhelmed by a festival lineup and it kinda paralyzes me with preparing for it. I come to the Overlords for suggestions. Who should I familiarize myself with slash plan on checking out? Particularly smaller names— we all know bicep, skee mask, etc. are gonna rip.

I’ll offer up one first. I’m so excited to experience Topdown Dialectic and pray that they’re scheduled at a sensible time for me. Last year at Mutek their slot was 4 am which is rough for an all day fest.

If you can plug some smaller, lesser known artists, then that would be lovely :)

Did anyone catch this interview? Pretty interesting, Bok basically says he wasn't really focused on what he was doing throughout the Nights Slugs peak and speaks kind of tepidly about that whole era. Sounds a lot more locked in and focused on a new style of music he's saying he developed.

"Kicks tend to follow a 5/4 time signature, the bass is 808-made, and styles like 8-bar grime, dubstep and gqom are pulled from, aiming for soundsystem activation."
