How I approach drawing Pokémon in a more dynamic way

I've been exploring different ways of portraying Pokémon through illustration, especially when it comes to making their movements and personalities feel more expressive.

I thought I'd share a few of my recent Pokémon pieces and some of the ideas behind them. I really enjoy taking the characteristics of a Pokémon and pushing them into a more dramatic or dynamic illustration while still trying to preserve what makes the original design recognizable.

I'd be curious to hear what you think of this approach. If you'd like to talk more about my artwork or the process behind it, feel free to send me a DM. 🎨

Why isn’t Florges a Grass/Fairy type?

They’re flowers for gods sake what was gamefreak thinking. Even in their name they have FLOR - ges. a mix of flower and gorgeous. so why isn’t it a grass type? do they just resemble flowers? I remember in a battle I used fire blast on a florges because i thought it was grass/fairy but it only did neutral damage and that’s when i realized it wasn’t grass/fairy a little too late. lol. can someone explain this please?

Question/Request Is the role of "coordinator" a concept in the games? Or is it an anime creation?

As far as I can tell, the games have only ever used the title "coordinator" once.

Discussion Pokémon Worlds/XP 2026 is a mess right now

For those of us who were feeling sad about missing out on the convention… maybe don’t feel so rough, because there’s been a lot going wrong:

Little kids are getting scammed by adults in Pokémon trades.

• There have been multiple brazen thefts of plushies from people attending. And these 4 incidents are only what has been reported on Twitter.

• There are multiple examples of staff very blatantly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act, even when supervisors get involved. Like, even for wheelchair users.

• People have gotten double charged for merch accidentally and been unable to get a refund.

• The Pin Rally ran out of pins by 9:30am on Saturday (the second day) and is now closed for the rest of the con. There were unmanaged stampede risks and fire hazards.

Scalpers have been lining up outside nonstop. Note that while it is a tradition going many years back for people to sell or trade Worlds merch from previous years, this has notably involved people blatantly reselling merch from this specific event.

Lines have been crazy long, and most people have to spend hours for each line. Kids are having a rough time, to say the least. Staff are sometimes snapping at attendees, because a few bad apple attendees are straight up sprinting into people.

• The most notable incident that many have heard about was the 2024 World Champion, Luca Ceribelli, being effectively banned from competing due to a misunderstanding about allowing one disabled friend to join them in line.

This is not to mention the difficulties with getting tickets, getting selected in a lottery to be able to attend side events, etc.

EDIT: Pin Rally is officially cancelled tomorrow. People overheard staff saying it was because fights broke out multiple times.

Question/Request Best randomized Pokemon games?

Hey so recently I have played my first Romhack (Unbound) and wanted to ask if anybody knew other ROMS that have a built in randomizer? Because when my Nuzzlock run fails I always have run the randomizer again to get a different seed which gets kinda tedious...

So a built in randomizer is very convenient, any recommendations or is Unbound the only one?

Question/Request I feel kinda lonely in my hobby

Hey there!

My name is Celia and I collect pokémon

merchandise (mostly toys, pins, some Tomy figures,

keychains etc.) from all decades. I don't collect all

items of a set, just the ones that Ilike.

However, I feel like it's kinda lonely because I don't

collect the plushies and the cards are not the main

focus of my collection

I have a social media page dedicated to it, but people

rarely interact with me in the comments.

I just wondered if anyone on here relates!

Discussion Other than "there are simply too many Pokémon now," what actually stops you from catching all Pokémon in a game?

We all know the standard answer: with over a thousand Pokémon across dozens of games, the sheer volume is daunting. But let’s look past that for a second...

If you actually wanted to complete a National Dex or a Living Dex today, or just the dex or a specific game, what specific hurdles stop you? Is it trading hurdles, paywalled mythicals, time-gated events, specific game mechanics, or just losing motivation mid-way through?

What is the real dealbreaker for you?

Old cards

I've been living under a rock I guess. I was never into Pokemon but my kids is. So my mom sent me some old pokemon cards. These cards are about (I think) 20 to 30 yrs old. They were my older brother collection. My brother is either 48 or 49 now. The cards are in decent condition. So I guess I have a hidden treasure now lol.

Discussion Unpopular Opinion: Ice types don’t need any more resistances

I see a lot of people online saying that ice types should have like 3-4 resistances which it honestly doesn’t. You know what it does need. More fast hard hitting attackers with like 75 defenses. Look at Chien Pao, Weavile, and Baxcalibur thriving rn because of that. seriously all we need are more ice type sweepers with high speed and attack or slush rush. Ice was always meant to be the glass cannon typing and it has some good coverage too so I think this buff alone is fair

Discussion My argument for why Lucario should get a regional variant if they make a Mexican region

Now before anyone asks this yes I'm Mexican no I'm not from Mexico yes lucario's one of my favorites and that's kind of the reason why I'm doing this and I'm sorry in advance if my information is wrong please tell me if I've gotten anything wrong.

Here is my argument for why Lucario should get a regional variant if we get a Mexico based region. Lucario itself is based off of Egyptian boxing and the Egyptian god Anubis hence why he stands like that and why he's a fighting type steel I have no idea why. Now for a regional variant you usually have to replace what they're based off of or give them something new and there's 2 perfect things that can replace these 2 inspirations and more in Mexican history culture and mythology. Allow me to introduce you to a Aztec god named Xolotl a trickster figure that was worshiped as the god of fire lightning and the underworld who's also the twin brother of Quetzalcoatl and the personification of the dark side of Venus.

Xolotl is described as mostly human but with a dog head although sometimes he's described being fully dog and other times he's described as a human wearing a dog skull as a mask. He's basically a Aztec equivalent to Anubis with a certain interpretations of him being basically the same thing although I'm summarizing a lot. Now what about the boxing aspect of him well boxing is actually the most favorited sport in Mexico with most Mexicans loving the sport entirely I myself am one of them with us having legendary figures in the world of boxing Salvador Sanchez, Ricardo Lopez Julio Cesar Chavez Oscar De La Hoya and most recently Canelo Alvarez the best in history boxing is intuitively in our culture. If you think that's not enough well what about Mayan boxing a sport from the Mayan days where you grab wooden masks and seashells with spikes on them and start punching each other sometimes they used rocks a literal predecessor to boxing that I think is still being played without rocks and spiky seashells of course.

None to mention there is a dog breed nicknamed the Xolo dog that was breed in honor of Xolotl who said to guide the dead to the afterlife they're also hairless but their babies are surprisingly cute seriously looking them up this could replace the jackal part of Lucario. Everything is set perfectly to make a Lucario regional variant in Mexico that I really hope gamefreak makes if not a Pokemon that's still uses these things as inspiration.

Discussion Would a signature item fix Regigigas or Slaking?

Regigigas is one of my favorite mons design-wise, and I have some fond memories of Slaking from when I was a kid. Now that I’ve learned more about VCG and the overall competitive scene, it makes me sad that these two mons have such awful abilities.

I’ve been thinking recently: would either of these Pokemon be viable in any format if they had a signature item that accounted for — or even reduced — the effects of Slow Start or Truant?

Some options I’ve thought of:

  1. Signature Item: a signature item for either Pokemon with the sole purpose of negating these abilities. Thematically this could be something related to coffee/caffeine for Slaking, and for Regigigas maybe a reference to Rock Lee’s ankle weights.

  2. Generic Ability-Cancelling Item: similar to the first idea, a general-use item that negates the holder’s ability. This way it could be used by any Pokemon alongside a move such as bestow/trick/switch drop to negate your opponent’s ability (I’d also consider the same item but with a stat increase, similar to how Sheer Force increases attack while negating move secondary effects but figured that could be too powerful).

  3. Mega Evolution, keeping the ability: some people have theorized that Mega Golisopod would get a new ability instead of Emergency Exit. While giving Regigias and Slaking both a new mega AND a new (ideally more beneficial) ability would make them much more powerful, I’m curious if keeping the detrimental ability alongside the +100 BST increase would make the Pokemon viable.

I shouldn't have gone back to Mt. Silver.

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I shouldn't have gone back to Mt. Silver.

I say that now, after everything, because at the time, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable idea. I've always been fascinated by Pokémon stories that didn't end when the battle was over. Maybe that's why Lost Silver and the stories about the snow on Mt. Silver stayed in my mind for so long. Not because of the stories themselves, but because of the feeling that there was something behind them, something the games had never intended to explain.

A few months ago, I found a physical copy of Pokémon HeartGold in an antique store. The cartridge was practically intact, although the label had been removed. The seller claimed he didn't know where it came from. I bought it anyway. When I put the cartridge into my Nintendo DS, there was only one save file. The trainer's name was .... I didn't create that file.

At first, I thought it was a coincidence. I started the game and found a rather strange team: a Typhlosion, an Espeon, a Gengar, a Dragonite, a Lapras, and a Pokémon whose name appeared as nothing but six blank spaces. The most disturbing thing was that they were all level 100.

There were no badges. No Pokédex. No money. And when I opened the map, the player's marker was at Mt. Silver. There was no way to leave. The character simply remained standing in front of the mountain's entrance.

I decided to continue.

The first thing that caught my attention was the absence of music. It wasn't complete silence. The game still produced the normal sounds of footsteps, opening menus, and movements. However, the music had completely disappeared.

I entered the cave. The farther I went, the colder the screen seemed to become. It's difficult to explain this without sounding crazy, but I swear the sensation was real. The DS screen actually felt colder to the touch.

After a few minutes, I found a passage that didn't exist in the original game. It was a descending staircase. I went down.

At the bottom was a huge room completely covered in snow. In the center stood a gravestone. It had no name. Only one sentence:

"Here the first trainer ended."

Below it was another inscription, much smaller:

"The second is still climbing."

I was alone at home. Even so, at that moment, I heard footsteps behind me.

Not in the game.

In my room.

I turned around immediately.

There was no one there.

When I looked at the DS again, the character was facing the screen, not the direction I had left him facing.

He was looking directly at me.

I closed the game.

The next day, I tried to delete the save file. The option didn't exist. I restarted the system. The trainer's name had changed.

Now it was:

... ?

The question mark hadn't been there before.

I started investigating. I found old references to Mt. Silver on practically abandoned Japanese forums. They were incomplete accounts, many of them dated years before the release of HeartGold.

They all mentioned the same thing: Mt. Silver wasn't just a mountain.

According to those reports, there was a hidden area called by players the White Underground. It couldn't be accessed through normal methods, didn't appear on the map, and supposedly served as some kind of archive for trainers who had gone beyond a certain point in the game.

I didn't understand what that meant until I found a post by a user named kage_0.

He only said:

"The game stores trainers that shouldn't exist."

The post ended with a hexadecimal sequence.

I used a memory editor and found something impossible. There was map data that didn't belong to the game.

Among it was an area called:

mt_silver_dead

I entered.

The screen turned white.

Then the snow appeared.

My character was standing at the top of Mt. Silver. In front of him was another trainer. The sprite looked like Red, but it wasn't Red.

His face was completely blank.

No eyes.

No mouth.

No details at all.

Above him was a single dialogue box:

"You're late."

The battle began.

I couldn't choose the Pokémon. The game chose for me.

Typhlosion entered the battlefield.

The opponent sent out a Pokémon called MissingNo.

It had no sprite; only a mass of distorted pixels.

I used Flamethrower.

Nothing happened.

MissingNo attacked.

My Typhlosion's HP dropped from 100% to 0%, but it didn't faint. The HP bar simply disappeared.

Then a message appeared:

"He was already dead."

That's when I understood.

The entire team in that save file wasn't level 100 because it had been trained.

It was level 100 because it was already finished.

And that sixth Pokémon with no name...

It wasn't a Pokémon.

It was the trainer.

Or, at least, whatever was left of him.

The battle ended without a winner. The screen returned to the map.

However, this time, there was a new location:

Mt. Silver — 2F.

I entered.

The path was covered in snow. At the back of the area, I found dozens of motionless characters.

Trainers.

All of them staring at the wall.

Some had names.

Others didn't.

One of them was named Red.

Another was named ....

Another was simply called Player.

And there were hundreds of them.

That's when I realized the true purpose of the place.

Mt. Silver wasn't the end of the journey.

It was where the game stored the trainers who had reached the end and continued to exist afterward.

Every time someone completed their story, a small part of that trainer remained in the data.

An echo.

A memory.

A digital ghost.

And somehow, that cartridge had gathered all of them.

Then the character named ... turned around.

He shouldn't have been able to move.

But he did.

He walked toward me.

The dialogue box appeared:

"Don't continue."

Then:

"He's here."

The screen went black.

When it came back, there was only one sentence:

"Look behind you."

I didn't look.

I didn't have the courage.

I turned off the DS.

Since then, the cartridge has remained stored inside a box, in a drawer. I never turned it on again.

But four nights ago, something happened that made me write this account.

At 3:17 AM, my Nintendo DS turned on by itself.

I had removed the battery.

Even so, the screen lit up.

There was no menu.

No logo.

Only an image of Mt. Silver covered in snow.

And in the center of the screen, my character.

Standing.

Waiting.

Below him was a dialogue box.

This time, it wasn't written in English or Japanese.

It was written in Portuguese.

"You said you wouldn't come back."

The second message appeared immediately:

"But Mt. Silver remembers you."

Since then, I've been hearing footsteps in the hallway during the early hours of the morning.

Always three steps.

Pause.

Three more steps.

Yesterday, I found snow on the floor of my room. Not much. Just a few small white marks near the door.

I followed the marks.

They ended in front of my Nintendo DS.

The device was turned off.

But there was something about the black screen that disturbed me.

In the dark reflection of the display, I could see my room.

The bed.

The window.

The door.

And someone standing behind me.

A trainer.

Red jacket.

Hat.

Completely white face.

I didn't turn around.

I simply closed my eyes.

And heard the final message.

It didn't come from the DS.

It came from behind me.

"Battle started."

Since then, I keep my bedroom door locked. Not because I'm afraid someone will come in, but because every night, at 3:17 AM, someone knocks three times.

And when I look through the peephole, I see snow in the hallway.

Even though it's summer.

And there's one thing I learned that night that still bothers me:

In Mt. Silver, nobody truly disappears.

Some simply finish their journey.

And others...

wait for the next trainer.

Pokemon Champions makes old Team Building seem positively barbaric

I have always hated building competitive teams for VGC. I only started playing doubles around Gen 6, hating every minute of it, and the 3DS games were when EV training and breeding were finally considered accessible. I remember hours of chaining SOS battles and the horde of orphaned breejects I hurtled into wonder trades because an IV wasn't to my liking.

SV considered the absolute apex when it came to ease of team building and even that required hours of grinding, an obscene amount of game and DLC purchases, as well as RNG manipulation to get a team going.

Putting together a competitive team felt like if you wanted to play chess, but you had to whittle all of your pieces by hand and there was a good chance your rook was just statistically worse than your opponent's.

With Champions, you fiddle with some sliders, pick your moves, natures, abilities, and boom- you're good to go. The teams I've taken to Master Ball each season have been recruited in game.

It's far from perfect. The best mega in the game has to be transfered in from ZA, box size is pitiful for free players, and as regulations change and new mons come out, it's probably going to get a lot harder to fish for specific Pokemon on tbe Gatcha pool. That being said, the actual training of mons has never been so simple. This was long overdue.
