Hi everyone, I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 11 + Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on an HP laptop.

Ubuntu installation completed successfully, but after restarting, the laptop always boots directly into Windows. Ubuntu does not appear in the HP F9 boot menu or UEFI Boot Order.

My setup:

• HP laptop
• Windows 11 already installed
• UEFI/GPT
• 1 TB NVMe SSD
• Windows partition: nvme0n1p3 (~511 GB NTFS)
• EFI partition: nvme0n1p1 (~210 MB FAT32)
• Ubuntu partition: nvme0n1p5 (~511 GB ext4)
• Ubuntu was installed manually using the free space
• Windows partition was not formatted/resized
• Secure Boot was initially disabled during installation; I've since enabled it again
• Enable MS UEFI CA key is now enabled

Ubuntu's EFI files definitely exist:

S:\EFI\ubuntu\
    grubx64.efi
    shimx64.efi
    mmx64.efi
    BOOTX64.CSV
    grub.cfg

Windows can also access shimx64.efi:

Test-Path "S:\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi"
True

I also created a BCD entry from Administrator PowerShell:

Ubuntu
device = partition=S:
path   = \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi

bcdedit /enum confirms the entry exists.

However:

bcdedit /enum firmware

still only shows:

{bootmgr}
USB Drive (UEFI)

No Ubuntu firmware entry.

The HP F9 menu currently shows only:

OS Boot Manager (UEFI) - Windows Boot Manager
Boot From EFI File

I also tried F9 → Boot From EFI File → internal NVMe → EFI, but the HP EFI file browser doesn't show the ubuntu folder properly.

Where am I stuck, and what is the correct/safest way to get HP UEFI to recognize Ubuntu without replacing or modifying the Windows EFI bootloader as I need Windows for placement exams ?

I remember 24.04 and 22.04 had randomized desktop backgrounds. But I can no longer find it in 26.04. How can I get it back?

I had the common problem of drivers: installed Ubuntu 26.04 on a 2015 MacBook Pro

(Broadcom BCM4360) and WiFi wouldn't come up because `broadcom-sta-dkms` fails to compile on kernel 7.x and the old fix was not updated recently.

So i made this User-Friendly installer that gathers all the right files to perform a clean install of that "MF of a Wi-fi device!" ;) it works offline too (if you have all of the components needed) or on wifi/teether/bluetooth/ (with a dongle key) and installs the correct driver for broadcom BCM 4360 wifi device on Ubuntu Kernel 7.x.

I'm sure it's something dead easy, but if I've got a terminal window in front of, say, Chrome, when I click on another window, say Discord, the terminal always jumps right to the back - no overlapped windows etc. This is after upgrade to 26.04. Didn't happen on 24.04 (I think). Any ideas on how to change the behaviour?

Each time i try to input my password, it says `Sorry, try again`. I even changed may password and restart my laptop like 3 times but still won't accept it.

I even went into settings and enabled an option that said that not all my settings were enabled and typed in the same password which did work there but won't work on the terminal.

Unlocking works and unlocks the leptop as well. I even typed in `groups` to see if sudo was there and it is.

All i wanted was to sudo update to switch to another ubuntu desktop but now i have this problem.

Anybody knows what i can do to fix this?

Hi! I recently installed the OS on my rasberrypi 5 and I cannot get my screen’s touch capability to work. When plugged in as a monitor for my PC it works just fine but I am having zero luck on getting it to work with the pi. I’m very new to computer stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have almost 2 terrabytes of unallocated space on an ssd that I want to put ubuntu on but when I go to install ubuntu the only option that shows up is "Manual Installation" and when i go to the next page in installation the only drive that shows up is the usb thumbstick I am trying to download it off of, also I cant even click next on the screen for some reason. does anyone know any way to fix this? also yes secure boot is disabled and the drive does not have intel RST turned on.

Is there a simple way to get up to date NFB Nvidia drivers? I understand Ubuntu is meant to be "Stable" but this is one area where getting the latest releases is important for compatibility and performance that I am not willing to give up on.

Its actually the other way around. My 20TB drive is mounted but my 8TB drive (which should be perfectly healthy) isnt mounting and is now also not showing up anymore D: help

It doesnt want to Mount my drive for some reason.

Now what I do know:

Its a 20TB HDD thats a bit fucked (read and write speeds are hella low, im unsure why but i think the header is a bit funky)

But it did get recognized on windows. Im not sure how it works on Linux as i am a first time user as of today. Can i force a mount somehow?

I recently installed Ubuntu 26.04 on my older HP ProBook (around 2015), and I'm having a problem with my external ASUS monitor.

My setup

• Laptop: HP ProBook, around 2015
• OS: Ubuntu 26.04, freshly installed yesterday
• External monitor: ASUS
• Connection: VGA cable
• Previous OS: Windows

What happened

The ASUS monitor worked perfectly when I was using Windows.

Before installing Ubuntu, I also booted Ubuntu 26.04 from a USB stick in Live mode, and the external monitor worked normally there too.

However, after installing Ubuntu 26.04 onto the laptop, the external monitor stopped working.

The ASUS monitor simply displays:

The important thing is that Ubuntu doesn't detect the second monitor at all. If I go to:

Settings → Displays

I only see the laptop's built-in display. There is no second/ASUS monitor available to configure.

I also tried logging out because I was advised to check whether I could switch between Wayland and Xorg/X11 from the login screen. However, I don't see the settings/gear icon underneath the password field, so I don't have an obvious way to select another session.

I'm not sure whether I'm actually using Wayland or Xorg.

Things I know so far

• ASUS monitor + VGA cable work with Windows.
• ASUS monitor worked when Ubuntu 26.04 was running from the Live USB.
• ASUS monitor does not work after installing Ubuntu 26.04.
• Ubuntu's Settings → Displays does not detect the external monitor.
• I don't see a Wayland/Xorg selection icon on the login screen.

I'm guessing this could be related to the graphics driver, kernel, VGA output configuration, or the difference between the Live USB environment and the installed system.

I'm not very experienced with Linux graphics, so I'd really appreciate step by step troubleshooting.

I can provide the output of commands such as:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE


lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D|Display"


uname -r

and anything else that would help diagnose the problem.

Why would VGA work perfectly in the Ubuntu 26.04 Live USB but completely stop working after installing Ubuntu to the internal drive?

And is there a way to determine whether I'm using Wayland or Xorg and whether the VGA output is being detected at the hardware/driver level?

I’m using an Acer Predator PHN16-71 and the battery charging limit is no longer working on Ubuntu.

Previously, I had the battery charging limit set to 80%, and it was working normally. Recently, the laptop completely discharged to 0%. After I plugged it in and charged it again, it charged all the way to 100%, and since then the 80% charging limit has stopped working.

My current setup:

Laptop: Acer Predator PHN16-71
BIOS: V1.18
Ubuntu: 26.04.1 LTS
Kernel: 7.0.0-30-generic

I’ve tried several Linux solutions, including Acer WMI, ASense, and checking the battery sysfs interfaces, but I still cannot get the charging threshold to work.

The acer_wmi module is loaded, but there is no battery charge-threshold interface exposed under:

/sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/

ASense also reports the battery-limit feature as not exposed/not available.

I also tried booting with an older kernel, but the result was the same.

What can I do now to restore the 80% charging limit? Is there some way to reset the battery/EC controller or manually enable the Acer battery charging threshold from Linux?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions from someone who has dealt with this on an Acer Predator laptop running Linux.

[Edit] I don't have windows dual boot so can't again turn that feature on

on windows im used to just clicking a button in msi dragion center, and fans speeding up so laptop doesn't get too hot in gaming.

i want a gui alternative that isn't too hard to setup on ubuntu for that.

Whenever i hit the terminal shortcut this pops up for some strange reason. I went to settings>keyboard shortcuts> launch terminal and it still doesn't work. I just upgraded to ubuntu 26.04 btw.
