Still blows out air but it's not cool/cold. Waiting for our AC guy (we rent, and there's been so many AC issues as long as we've lived here). Hopefully it'll be a quick fix when he comes and we won't have to wait for a part to come in the mail or something.
This is with all the shades and windows closed. We're in SoCal. Thank goodness this didn't happen when it was in the 100Ā°Fs last week.
That sounds like your indoor vents/head wasn't blowing air, actually. Filters don't prevent the air from getting cold. OP said air is flowing, so they probably have a refrigerant leak.
This is a modern AC, it will have auto defrost. And again - they said they have air flow. All of you people with your hypotheticals just ignore that he said the air is flowing.
It's either low charge/leak or capacitor/compressor problem. In no world is this a filter problem

lol what can I search to see how to fix this? Iāve become very passionate about understanding my AC unit. I donāt have time or the will to go to HVAC school but I love AC and lose my mind when my unit goes down. So Iām always down to learn a trick or two
Search ac capacitor replacement on YouTube. You'll find plenty of videos on the symptoms, tests, and removal/installation of capacitors. Super easy fix if you have a couple of hand tools and a multimeter.
You rent? Is this a house or apartment? If the latter, go listen to a neighbor's unit and I bet it will sound louder. If it is, that's the issue. Any competent HVAC technician has these on the truck.

This happened to use a month ago. AC tech came, saw it was a compressor or capacitor issue, grabbed one from his truck, and replaced it within the hour.Ā
If it makes you feel any better, I live in SoCal and donāt have AC at all. Last week was so hard to get through. Bonus points because I had a tooth extracted and it was a traumatic extraction. Awful pain plus 80 degrees at 1am was absolutely not something I want to experience again.
Coils freeze over on my apartments every week and maintenance comes by and clears it. Anyone know a course of action for a more permanent fix? I'm sweating balls it's 80Ā° in here
If itās not the capacitor it could be a flow issue freezing up your system. Make sure all the vents are fully open. If you see frost near the compressor turn the whole thing off for 2 hours to thaw out then restart.
Turn of your AC, if you have central heating, turn your heater on, and keep it running until you feel hot air (not just warm) coming out.
You're coils are probably frozen over. I live in the central valley, between my pets and the RIDICULOUS amount of dust, I change my filter about every two weeks, and if I don't catch the restrictive air flow fast enough, my coils freeze over regularly.

Until you feel hot air come out - it will feel slightly warmer at first, then will feel like an actual heater. You'll know the difference. If you don't want to deal with the heater, just running fan only for a few hours will do the trick. Heater just speeds the process up.
24 hours doesn't mean much of your AC is still on. It will still run the compressor, which will keep chilling the coil.
Ok, that makes sense thank you. I just wanted to make sure we didn't like make the coils worse by still having it on in the last 24 hours. We only turned it off for like half an hour while trying to sleep and then decided it was hotter without it on so we turned it back on.
It's warm enough in the house, I would honestly just run the fan only, give an hour or two, and then switch back to AC; but the longer you can wait, the better.
It's an easy way to troubleshoot while you wait on a professional, and may fix itself. You can also check the lines coming out of the unit you posted they may have some frost on them; if they don't, touch them, see if they feel cold. They'll be the thicker lines, usually metal, and hopefully insolated.
Thank you for all your help! We saw the coil freezing being an option when troubleshooting yesterday, but we couldn't figure out how to just run it as fan instead of AC. We have a Nest thermostat.
If youāre still waiting on the ac guy, make sure thereās water coming out of the drip outside. Sometimes if that pipe gets clogged it will set off a float switch that shuts off the compressor. You can clear the line and turn the ac on and back off and it will reset.

We just replaced the filter 2-3 weeks ago. It was still the first thing we tried after turning the AC on/off though. Could there be another filter? It's the one under the unit inside the house. That's the only one he tells us to replace every so often.
Sometimes the coils are frozen over, and you need to shut it off for a couple hours to thaw it out. You can typically remove filters to see under the air handler to see those coils and if covered in frost like your freezer, turn it off.
Like others have said, check drain pan for it being full and the float switch being activated as a result.Ā
Ooof, I feel this. I was here last month. Apartment complex had to replace the entire unit. Looking forward to next monthās electric bill, as the previous two have been $400 & $460.
Also and socal and had this problem. We had a freon leak. With getting a tech out, diagnostics, and scheduling repairs, it was about 3 weeks as our guy had to track down some discontonued parts. We live in a well shaded part of the building so with windows open and fans it was bearable. Hopefully since you're renting it will move a bit faster.
Our leak was on the inside portion of the system, not the outside unit.
I took my smart thermostat off and put an analog on. That thing kind of had a mind of its own and would always kick off at certain temps. I was not in eco mode and even had my ac buddy come over and see if wasn't crazy.
I just had this problem. The outside unit is the condensor and if it is not able to get rid of the heat fast enough it will turn the compressor off and shut down. This is remedied by running water over the coils unpressurized to remove any debris so air is able to go over the coils and remove the heat.
There is also an inside coil called the evaporator coil that will also need to be cleaned annually. If both of these coils are clogged it will make your unit run inefficiently causing you to use more power to cool your house.
Keep in mind though when it is over 100 degrees a couple degree difference is normal.
We used to live in some townhouses in east county San Diego and the ac would occasionally be on, blowing air and it just wasnāt cold. Go check out the ac unit and thereās a pipe thatās just frozen, so we just sprayed it down with the hose until no more frost was forming and its suddenly started working again.
Iām sure we were probably doing the exact wrong thing to fix it but it was super hot and that pipe got to be frozen when I wanted to be cooler.
I recently had the capacitor go out on mine. It would just blow room temp air. The capacitor is what kicks on the compressor outside. Theyāre pretty cheap and easy to replace. You will need a multimeter to test. Sometimes you can see it bloated though.

If it makes you feel better, we had the same thing and the AC tech just cleaned the filters and we were good.
