I'm 100% for Alberta Staying in Canada and No to the Nine.

Yes, we DO exist!

BUT I've spent a lot of this summer in and around rural areas (Northern and Southern areas, farms, small towns, small cities, etc). There are many Stay in Canada signs (and flags) and there are A LOT of pro-separatist signs. You see them on the highways, on lawns, and back roads pretty much everywhere. Separatists are very vocal, almost to the point of drowning out the Stay in Canada people. I can't stress how important this is. It shows there's strong support rurally for separation.

It might be fun/feel good to say "It's just a small minority" but that's not entirely the point. They are very motivated to get their way in the referendum and I can safely say they will push, pull, or drag their friends and relatives to the polls and get them to vote for separation, even if they don't fully agree.

The UCP, as well as foreign actors, have spent a great deal of time and money legitimizing the separatist movement and fomenting anger. They feed this with rhetoric about how Ottawa is stealing from and cheating Alberta and many people in these areas take that seriously. This sense of alienation from Ottawa is ingrained in many communities. That sense of injustice WILL translate to voting at the polls, now that the opportunity is here.

There are many people (both conservative and progressive) pushing back against this. We are door knocking, talking to our friends and families, attending rallies, and anything else we can do. Unfortunately, we just don't have enough time, people, and resources to reach everyone. It's also very difficult to change people's deeply held beliefs.

We can't sleepwalk into this referendum.

Everyone (urban, rural, big centers, small centers) needs to get to the polls (or special ballot) and make sure there is a resounding 'YES' to Alberta staying in Canada. We need to get everyone out on this one. Tell your friends and family. Offer to remind them. Offer to give them rides to the polling station. Be proactive.

Historically, we have had low voter turnout in Alberta. That can't happen this time. It is vital that we don't underestimate the reach of the separatist messaging.

Looking at the polling, I think Nenshi has a bigger problem than Danielle Smith.

The NDP can’t build a strategy around waiting for the UCP to make enough mistakes that voters eventually switch sides. They need to give Albertans a clear reason to choose them.

Healthcare, education, home insurance and car insurance are issues people actually feel in their everyday lives. Why not build a simple, populist economic agenda around making those things noticeably better?

Whatever you think of Smith, she knows how to dominate the political conversation. Nenshi needs to start setting the agenda instead of constantly responding to hers.

Back to school today! our school was missing bc three teachers! One teacher sadly passed away over the summer and two were seconded to a task force (is this the class complexity team?!). school found out on Friday they wouldn’t be there today. One class couldn’t even get a sub, and will be covered by the principal and VP.

Is this a thing that’s happening? Or just a weird coincidence at our school?

I was looking on the official Alberta Elections site (sorry link not allowed) to see the 10 questions being raised in the October 19th Election. They seem a bit complicated and confusing and I wonder if some might simply not answer some of them. Would their votes on the ones they do answer be valid I wonder. Thoughts?

I am willing to bet there is not a single one that is in favor of lowering costs for the working class.

NDP needs to just use that for their campaign next year. Put the facts out there for everyone to see and come with receipts. Publicly grill the UCP about it. Ask Danielle Smith about it at every appearance.

Forget personalities and party loyalty for a minute. If Nenshi announced one major policy tomorrow that would noticeably improve your life, what would it have to be?

Lower home or car insurance? Better access to healthcare? Smaller classrooms and better funded schools? Lower utility bills? Something completely different?

And if your answer is “nothing,” what is the biggest thing stopping you from considering the NDP?

just got my natural gas bill from Direct Energy. $98.00. Energy used this cycle was 0 GJ. No wonder it doesn't seem to make any difference whether or not we are careful with our usage.

I signed a lease for a condo unit starting September 1, 2026, after completing a virtual tour and signing the contract remotely on August 15. On August 28, I paid a security deposit equal to one month’s rent.

On August 29, the landlord allowed me early access to drop off some belongings. Upon entering, I immediately noticed a severe pet odor. The owners assured me they would address it, so I went ahead and paid the full first month's rent on August 30.

When I requested an update on August 31, they admitted that while cleaning was underway, the odor would still linger. At that point, I stated I did not want to move forward and requested a full refund of my rent and deposit. They initially insisted on further cleaning, but when I stood firm, they claimed I had breached the lease simply by signing it back on August 15, and stated they needed to seek legal counsel. I explained to them that under Section 16 of the Alberta Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), signing a lease simply establishes the agreement; a tenancy does not legally commence, nor do full tenant obligations begin, until the agreed-upon effective start date. Because the lease date was September 1, signing on August 15 did not constitute a breach, and they could not legally withhold my funds.

Later that day, I went to retrieve my belongings. The property owner was present, listened to my concerns, and offered a reasonable compromise: deep-clean the unit, amend the lease start date, and refund 15 days of rent. I agreed.

However, after speaking privately outside, the landlord returned and claimed I was being "aggressive and shady" for bringing up the law, stated they were no longer comfortable renting to me, and asked for my response. I maintained my position, agreeing that we shouldn't proceed if that was their stance.

When I asked for my funds back, they again alleged I was in breach of contract and reiterated that they were seeking legal advice.

I chose not to argue further, but I gave them a strict deadline of September 3, 2026, to return my full deposit and first month's rent before I escalate the matter legally. Is this the right move?

When people hear “municipal infrastructure,” roads often come to mind first, but communities rely on a much broader network of assets every day.

Water and wastewater systems, stormwater infrastructure, transit, recreation facilities, libraries, emergency services buildings, and local roads all help communities function and grow.

As Alberta's population continues to increase, municipalities are facing growing demand for infrastructure while also maintaining and replacing aging assets.

It's one of the issues municipal leaders will be discussing at this year's ABmunis Convention and Trade Show as communities look at how to support growth while keeping services affordable.

A lot of these issues are connected. New housing needs roads, pipes, and utilities. Community programs need funding. And municipalities are expected to provide more services as populations grow.

What's the biggest infrastructure or service challenge you've noticed in your community lately? Roads? Recreation facilities? Transit? Housing? Or is it something else?

I’ve been trying to request one all morning. I’m going to be out of town when the referendum happens and would like to put my vote in. For some reason it keep getting “gateway time out” and “host error”. Anyone else also having this issue?

I got mine in the mail today, 5 weeks after applying for it. Did they add my citizenship marker or PHN? No. I thought that was the whole point of this. But at least we know that it's still a gong show out there!

Anyone else have issues with these? And should I even bother trying to get it corrected? Because at this point, I'm just not sure I can even be bothered.

Im thinking of going back to school soon, and the program I want would be 2.5 years. Since its full-time I’d not be able to work, I make around 50k a year, and have about 20k in savings (some are in “locked” accounts, so I can’t really access it), I’ve never had to deal with student loans or grants before, so I’m not sure what to do/ how much I would probably get. I also will have a scholarship for 1k/ semester. I don’t live with my parents, and already have a diploma. I can realistically pay for schooling without any help, but I can’t afford living expenses on my own is my problem. Can anyone help with timing/ when to apply compared to when you start your semester? A ballpark of how much I can get? Thank you.

My loans have been listed as payment pending since Aug 28 when my school confirmed my registration, I understand weekends wont change much but today is the disbursement date and still nothing.
