AITA for telling my separating wife that her daughter not being able to move into my basement room before school starts is not my problem?
My wife and I are separating, and I’m moving out of the house we own together.
I moved around a lot as a kid, so this was the first house that really felt like home to me. I started looking for apartments in April, but while we were still paying about $2,000/month for our son’s daycare, moving out wasn’t financially realistic.
So for months I’ve basically been living in my basement office, sleeping on an air mattress or couch, waiting until daycare ended.
Meanwhile, my 13-year-old stepdaughter decided she wanted to move into my basement office after I left. Back in May, she started packing up her room, and my wife began telling her she could move downstairs “at the end of the summer.”
Our last daycare payment was August 1. My wife and I had agreed I needed to sign a lease by September 15, but I signed one in mid August with a September 1st move-in date that I ended up moving up a week because living at the house was becoming too hostile and emotionally distressing for me.
My wife then said she really wanted her daughter moved into the basement before school started September 2. I told her I would try, but that fully moving out that quickly would be difficult.
It’s now September 1. I’m already living in the apartment, but I still have some things in the basement. I took time off work and have spent the last five days furnishing an apartment and setting up my son’s room so he can stay with me.
Last night, my wife sent me a voice message saying she was frustrated and resentful because her daughter hadn’t been able to move downstairs before school started.
I told her this was not my problem to solve.
Nobody told her daughter she had to start packing in May. My wife could have told her to wait until I had actually moved. She is also moving from one bedroom in the house to another, so there was no real reason it had to happen before the first day of school.
I also asked my wife to recognize that, out of everyone involved, I’m the one whose life is being uprooted. Everyone else gets to stay where they already live. I’m leaving the first house that ever really felt like home, finding and furnishing a new apartment, rebuilding a household, and making sure our son has a home with me too.
I said I would try to meet her preferred timeline, but I never promised it.
AITA for not moving out by her preferred date and telling her this isn't my problem?
Edit: really kind of touched honestly by everyone's concern for other parts of the situation. I can say with confidence that my attorney is very good and has not indicated any issues with my ownership in the house. In our state the house is considered a marital asset similar to a retirement account and should be split up as such.
Edit 2: when we bought the house we were making the same amount of money. Only in the last 2 to 3 years has her salary outpaced my. Half of the down payment came out of my pre-marriage retirement fund, a quarter of it we saved together, and the last quarter her dad gave us. Also, if everyone really wants to know, her biggest complaint with me is that I deal with sometimes very severe depression and it became most difficult during covid and after. She feels I didn't do more to try to help myself and she got tired of dealing with it. I'll even be honest and say that I probably could have done more or I could have been more clear about what I needed from her or things like that.
Edit 3: I tried with my stepdaughter. I really did. You all can think what you want. Also for everyone dragging me for my post history, you realize not everything someone posts on Reddit is their entire life right? Maybe they just post when they're frustrated.
