Doomed yuri 😭 wished Seiran could have read the letter first
76
u/Suspicious-Value8260 14d ago
ahh, doomed yuri, truly nothing else comes close to sharing the same love and hatred I have for it. Much like Mimi and Seiran I don't like feeling pain, but at the same time the pain existing proves how lovely the yuri was.
14
u/Tornmacaroon 13d ago
I kept thinking, maybe it's going to be a spell that shatters when she is about to die and saves her and somehow it's going to be tied into the letter thing. Or maybe when she dies the letter has a spell on it so they can say goodbye to one another or have a pre recorded message type thing. But no. I just got heartbreak. I could feel what was about to happen as soon as she stood on that fucking branch even tho I was in denial the whole episode. I'm such a wreck over this episode.

Speechless. It's so fucked up that no one else noticed Seiran passing because she doesn't even leave a body behind, and then they play that damn ED after.
172
u/Suspicious-Value8260 14d ago
That scene was just the cherry on top of this episode. Nonstop death flags for Seiran, constant anxiety for me watching it, 2 fakeout deaths, Seiran wanting desperately to prove her usefulness to the school and protect Ari, coming back from her first mission traumatized, then the story ends with with one last fakeout making you think she survived only for her to die right in front of Mimi and for the other students to basically forget she ever existed. This series is not holding back from portraying how hellish the war is.
52
u/ExcitableSarcasm 14d ago
Honestly I read the manga a while back and haven't kept up. I checked back in because I remember Seiran's death honestly being one of the more impactful anime deaths considering how early it happens, and boy did it deliver.
Might go watch the whole thing from the start now.

I was under the impression this anime would be finished in 12 episodes or so. How much more content is there from the manga?

I should really invert the order of this anime and Fighting game.
My soul is crushed.
I kinda hoped that in the necklace there was the forbidden spell to resuscitate the death. However, the moral dilemma if it’s right to bring back a soul because we refuse to let go.I believe Mimi will now start her wake up arc.
Also, war is hell.

Same, I wish I watched this first so that I can wash it away with some funny and cute girls playing fighting games. My soul is crushed. AGAIN (after yesterday’s ep of Love Unseen)

She did a good job making it back to rollcall and start heading home but she couldn't even make it back.
Like I knew she was done, then I got a bit of hope but then that stagger and when she said she was cold I knew it was too late... actually it was a done deal when she used all her first aid to stop the guys bleeding...
Honestly, I feel like Ari just wanted Seiren to be there by her side and Seiren ignored Ari and threw herself into war, only to die like that with no body or remains to take back, legit dying without a trace.
It's not even that they forget she existed, they didn't even she had just died. It's also a reflection on the fact that Seiren thinks she is all important and wants to leave a significant contribution only for her life and person to not matter at all.
She didn't die a hero, she didn't die in a blaze of glory, she didn't die in a way for anyone to know her or remember her. She was just a soldier, a nobody, someone of no signicance that got snuff out without anyone but Mimi witnessing it.

Ha! But seriously, I had the opposite planned for today - I held off on Fighting Games for two weeks so that I could watch some funny episodes after this.

I didn't hold off on watching any episodes, but I do make sure every week to watch Dying Day before Fighting Games. Just because I knew something like this was going to happen eventually. So with that said, I'm now going to watch my Fighting Games yuri to clear my mind.

Yeah, let's do a special ending just to really rub it in.
Jokes aside, well set up and foreshadowed through the episode that she wasn't really ready. Mimi's reaction will be the most interesting I think.
It really is depressing week in anime isn't it.
82
u/FlaminScribblenaut myanimelist.net/profile/girlbeast_val 13d ago
Mimi's reaction will be the most interesting I think.
I mean, this is going to be Mimi finally understanding, viscerally, what death actually is and entales, now that it's happened to someone she knows; or knew, rather. This is inevitably going to be Mimi learning what Sheena tried to teach her and was discouraged from doing so to keep the school's ace on the battlefield, and it's most certainly gonna rattle basically everything.
90
u/Suspicious-Value8260 14d ago
Seiran really shoud've taken her reaction to her first mission as a sign she wasn't ready. She had a chance and blew it. I'm not mentally prepared for grief-stricken Mimi if we end up getting that.

That last bit was just so cruel. They raised so many death flags this episode, did a fakeout death twice, kept us in constant anxiety, and then when we finally see her death at the end of the episode they make us think she actually survived only to snatch it away from us.

u/Myrkrvaldyr 14d ago
Dead on her 2nd battle. Talk about a short lifespan. Her death seems to have affected Mimi. Let's see how it changes her.

I think she just got back (that's why she was on the outskirt). Mimi is the one who spotted her first because she is looking for her specifically
38
u/SoraVanitus 13d ago
I think so too... she literally limped back, I thought maybe Mimi would heal her or something but yeah, she really did try her best to go home
22
u/mineirim2334 13d ago
Mimi would have been able, sadly she did not realize the gravity of her wound. Let's see if she will mature after this shock.
10
u/SoraVanitus 13d ago
I doubt it, Mimi is very typical to what someone would be like if they have been fighting in a war for so long and basically no longer had any humane sense left
6
u/Last_Biscotti_655 12d ago
This is the part that makes me the saddest bc she COULDVE LIVED, she was just pretty stubborn and prideful to say that it didn’t hurt anymore. My poor baby she was only 14 … poor ari too….
15
u/miichan_v 13d ago
Mimi knows she's hurt, but not the extent of her injuries. Seiran kept telling her that she was fine and that it doesn't hurt... Which raises a question, why didn't Seiran tell Mimi she was severely injured and that she needed healing ASAP :(

It's ridiculous how they send their "best" students out into the field when they are clearly under prepared and it's just a matter of time before they get KIA. Imagine how much stronger these talented children could become if they have the time to grow to their fullest potential?? Like where are all the adults? Send them to the battlefield instead... Like are there seriously no trained adult mages outside this institution?

Honestly Fran's plan was always going to backfire if she thought a mock battle was going to dissuade the higher-ups already using child soldiers to recruit another into their fold.
Fuck all the flags were there but THAT scene still was hard to watch, especially Seiran's last words to Mimi, playing a special ED song with her moments with Ari only makes this so much more painful

Returning here to this thread 9 hours after watching the episode to survey the reactions, your comment seems to be the general consensus: the death flags were glaring, but it was gut-wrenching to watch.
Before last week's episode, I think most comments I saw predicting deaths thought it was going to be Ari and/or Seiran (mostly the former), but they quickly shifted to Seiran following last week's episode.

Honestly Fran's plan was always going to backfire if she thought a mock battle was going to dissuade the higher-ups already using child soldiers to recruit another into their fold.
Yeah, anyone that's going to the extent of using child soldiers is at the point where they do not give a fuck about throwing one more bit of human shield out in front.
116
u/InternationalLoad891 14d ago
What's the point of sending out half-trained 14-years old who are clearly not ready for the battlefield? Their 16 and 17 years old are barely holding on. They are blowing through their 15 years old, and now they are wasting their 14 years old (2 KIA already) before training them to be semi-useful.
I am more furious than sad that the so-called school is so short-sighted, they just wasted their top student from the 14-years old cohort because those old cronies just don't give a flying f-ck.
80
u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 14d ago
From the way they talked about Mimi not being enough anymore, it sounds less short sighted and more that they can't even hold the line for 2 years for these girls to turn 16 and ready for battle. So, it's pure desperation.
56
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 14d ago
They even called a lot of 15 year olds today along seiran, I don't even remmeber them doing that before.
31
u/rubslotiononitsskin 13d ago
Only a matter of time until Sheena's fighting side by side with Mimi, unless she can bust out healing magic. In that case, she might be able to stay away from the frontlines like Fran.
It never mattered if you were "weak" or "strong". The fact that they were throwing children into the meat grinder at all proved that the situation is FUBAR and nothing is off limits. The government desperately needs more bodies and they were never gonna stop at the "strong" kids. They are gonna fill in the gaps with all the bodies they can get and if you're a "weak" kid like Sheena, well, at least you'll be a nice meat shield for your comrades before they get slimed 5 seconds later than they thought they would've been.
11
u/lunatickoala 13d ago
Historically, calling up people who were formerly deemed too young or too old was very much a sign of desperation.
A couple of questions come to mind. First, are they on the defensive or are they the aggressors? Or is it more like medieval warfare between feuding lords with competing claims who agree on a time and place for battle and send forces to fight?
There's a difference between the desperation of trying to fend off an invading force and the desperation of not wanting to lose face by losing a war that you started. The number of people they send feels too limited for it to be a desperate defense and only sending people seen as expendable is more characteristic of a war of choice than a war of necessity.
Secondly, do the higher ups think they have a war-winning wunderwaffe in Mimi and thus continue the war because of that?

u/eoz 14d ago
My theory on this is that it's the foreshadowing that the war is being lost, badly. Speculating wildly (I'm anime-only) I'm gonna guess we'll get some plot beats like Sheena getting badly enough that Mimi thinks she's dead, optionally Mimi going berserk until sufficient levels of yuri are applied, and my pet theory, a reveal that whatever the heck Mimi did to her when she lost an arm was a lot more powerful than a simple heal.
43
u/InfernoVulpix 13d ago
My question is, what the heck kind of war is this? Every day or two, students go into the nearby forest, walking-distance away, to fight enemies, and this just happens consistently forever? Who are these enemies? Is their strategic objective to take the school? Has the front line of the war just been stuck here within walking distance of the school indefinitely? If their goal is to take the school, why do they seem to only ever send raiding parties? Why do they keep coming back again and again despite so many failures? It makes no sense. This doesn't look anything like how an enemy country would try and attack.
At this point, my guess is that the war isn't a war at all, but a rebellion. This kind of battle, endless waves of raiding parties without any sense of clear strategy, is a lot easier to make sense of if there's a lot of unrest in the country and ordinary people are rising up against the state in scattered disorganized groups. If that's true, then the school is in the position it's in because, even if it wants to do right by its children, it's subordinate to a tyrannical government willing to send child soldiers out as enforcers of its regime.
30
u/Etiennera 13d ago
There's definitely a reason the nature of the war isn't being explained. But it's a magical world with magic as powerful as immortality, so it could be pretty unintuitive.
29
u/cascading_error 13d ago
I shoved it into the "author doesnt actualy know what war is like/ actual war is incompatible with the wanted plot" box
Becouse this isnt war, this feels more like waves in a tower defence senario. But orphens need to come from somewhere so clearly the war isnt isolated to the school.

It has barely been explored but the lore behind the scenes is one of the things I have been most curious about in the show.
Also, I have never seen a twist where it is revealed that "the war isn't a war at all, but a rebellion", kinda dig the idea!
28
u/TheBusStop12 14d ago
It's quite possible the war has reached an existential threat level. They're quite simply running out of capable fighters. Like how Finland eventually was forced to surrender during the winter war because they were quite simply running out of young men and any more would destroy the country from the inside out
→ More replies (2)12
u/Temporala 14d ago
Finland wasn't running out of men in Winter War. Their casualties were still manageable considering the conditions (winter of 1939 was extremely cold) and number of enemies assaulting them. Finland also still had about 30000 active reserve troops that were not committed to any front at end of hostilities.
Instead, it was more about other resources. For example, they really didn't have much artillery ammo left after shooting 3 months almost continuously and there were no convenient sources to get more in large quantities. For warfare during that age, best way to stop infantry wave was to shower them with artillery while on approach or when they were getting assault groups concentrated.
Even the artillery cannon tubes were wearing out and infantry supplies like bullets and explosives were also on the low side.

u/Alter_Kyouma 13d ago
"We need to respect her wishes"
Like wtf, 14 years old children don't get to just volunteer for war. Literally just tell her no! Pissed me off so bad too, and what did the school even gain?
→ More replies (1)13
u/InternationalLoad891 13d ago
Exactly. That is the thinnest excuse for sending Seiran to war. A cadet doesn't, shouldn't get to overrule the decision of her trainers. If the drill instructor says she is not ready, then she isn't. A school that overrules her trainer with, "But she says she is ready" is operating on depraved indifference.
30
u/Vanek_26 14d ago
I'm watching this and going, "Are we the baddies?"
I have to wonder how evil/bad the other side (which we've basically had zero info about) really is if "our" side is willing to throw 14 year old girls into the meat grinder.

u/Thrymster 14d ago
I think this is one of those cases where learning too much about the politics behind the war would actually take away from the story - our protagonists are child soldiers forced to fight and die in a war they do not understand, trying to justify the actions of the adults with "the other nation is REALLY bad!" would undermine the message imo.
16
u/steeltrain43 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kingdave212 14d ago
Ignoring uprisings/revolutions that turn into civil wars and focusing on just conflicts between nation states, the vast majority of war doesn't have a good guy and a bad guy.

u/nomocanolife 13d ago
What baffles me is that it's the kids being forced to go out and fight this war while seemingly no adults put their money where their mouth is in any meaningful way, and everyone in this society just seems to accept it. My theory is that whatever nation they're in is the antagonistic side (the people attacking all seem like grown adults, grown adults killing children mind you but adults nonetheless) and whoever is left by the end of the series is gonna be trying to escape to enemy lines just to get away from this hell.

Okay, so Mimi DID almost kill Seiran...
Honestly, at this point, this feel more like Omi and Fran coping with their situation...
This episode was really making me anxious the whole time, even the kiss just made me more anxious.
I really feel bad Fran. Because she clearly against this whole thing, but this school will continue with or without her, so the best thing she can do is stay there as a medic for these children.
The whole second half of this episode was making me tear up because I know something bad is gonna happen, but I wasn't ready...
153
u/marshmallow_sunshine 14d ago
Fran in episode 1 "I've told you at least 200 times, don't talk to the other students." The school was intentionally distancing Mimi from the other students for so long, but she has finally lost someone she was close to. Other deaths before this were just faceless nobodies to her. Mimi now has to grapple with feeling real loss and what this war might bring towards Sheena in the future if she also heads off into battle.

u/Alej_11 14d ago

59
u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor 14d ago
We've had minimal Mimi and Seiran interactions up until this episode. The conversations between the two were brief but it feels like Mimi was really starting to connect with Seiran as both have someone special waiting for them home. There's no doubt Seiran's death will have some effect on Mimi.
15
u/i_know_the_void 14d ago
I’m wondering if that’s why the elders were pushing Seiran to battle and even to the front lines, so to speak. Yes, she volunteered, but there seemed to be something else going on.
43
u/Ok_Calligrapher_6797 14d ago

Honestly, Mimi's reaction to Seiran's death is the one I'm interested in the most. Not only because this is the first time Mimi has really lost someone close to her, not counting her mother but we still don't know how many memories Mimi has of her, but also because Mimi was the only one in the group to actually witness her death firsthand.

17
u/Suspicious-Value8260 14d ago
Sad but it also felt kind of lovely for me personally. It showed that Seiran's death wasn't just a tool to emotionally manipulate the audience, but instead that the studio and the author both cared about her enough themselves to show how her death is a true loss for the world. Idk, I just can't help but find it rather lovely.

Of course everyone is going to mainly remember this episode for what happened to Seiran, but I hope people also notice Mimi's development. She's definitely not as naive as she often comes off. Sheena's words about treasuring all life definitely reached her, to some degree at least. And she will have to think about what SHE is fighting for going forward. Really looking forward to that!

We all saw Seiran’s death coming from miles away. However, I’m not entirely sure what happened there at the end. She just straight-up disintegrated into thin air. Was this an illusion created by the accessory around her neck?
Aside from all the ethical questions, I fail understand why the academy’s higher-ups would send someone unexperienced into battle. There’s probably a good reason for why they almost exclusively use 16-year olds. Had they’d given her two more years of training, Seiran’s chances of making it to graduation would’ve looked much better.

u/marshmallow_sunshine 14d ago
They mention it back in episode 1 that the school controls their lives on the battlefield so that they vanish when they die to prevent the enemy from obtaining any information.

That was a hell of an episode! Ufff... Seiran sure was the most obvious choice to die, but I'm surprised that test duel with Mimi, her first deployment and death happened all in the same episode.
Plus, it was nice that it got a special ED dedicated to Ari and Seiran. It's the last time we see them together :(
It kinda pains me the most that Seiran died being basically sniped off in one shot, after saying it's the most important thing to come back alive, and now she's dead and all that is left is Ari's gift.
Now I don't want to imagine how Ari will react to the news of Seiran's death. I hope that Esther-senpai will prove to be useful here since she also experienced the same loss not long ago.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I really like the contrast between the training and the war scenes. In training you could almost believe you're in a battle shounen. The point is to give students a chance to show they've got what it takes. But in the real battles everything happens so quickly because no one out there is taking any chances. You make one mistake and it's over. Real combat is hyper optimized.

And so the famous chapter has been adapted and yes I do consider this chapter to be “Famous” half of the reason this series still dominates Yuri communities is purely because of the discussion it generates.
It’s just a really well done character death it’s built up well and it’s executed extremely well.

Yeah, I saw comments from people waiting for something truly depressing to happen (like a ticking time bomb), and it has certainly delivered.
I'll have to return to this thread in a few hours to see the reactions and how the discussion unfolds.

After last episode I was convinced that Seiran would not be around for much longer. So it wasn't much of a surprise to see it happen this episode. It was well done, but the real pain is next episode. We will have to see how people react to her death.

Yeah. the way this series handled Seiran's death feels like the perfect definition of something not feeling original but very well executed. This episode is filled with death flags for Seiran from beginning to end. It makes you think she'll die in her battle with Mimi but she lives. we get the first kiss between Seiran and Ari right before Seiran's first mission alongside Fran's remider that she's not immortal and the most important thing she can do is come back alive. Then the scene between Esther and Ari waiting for Seiran's return just heightens the enxiety more, but that's another fakeout. Seiran survives her first mission but has traumatized by her first experience killing someone and how easy people die. That really should have been her hint to not go on a second mission. But of course she does and Ari gives her a necklace with a message inside that Seiran never gets to read. Then she finally gets shot in the back when she lets her guard down only for the show to pull one last fakeout at the end and make you think she actually managed to survive, but nope she dies and her body completely vanishes right in front of Mimi. Ending the episode with Mimi picking up Seiran's necklace, the only piece of her left, while gazing on in shock while the world around her acts as if Seiran never even existed.
Truly what I'd consider a perfectly executed character death and portrayal of how awful war is. Seiran didn't prove her usefulness to the school or prove herself or repay some debt or manage to protect Ari. She died and most of the world immiediatly forgot about her.
9
u/StylizedPenguin 14d ago
Yeah, the buildup makes it obvious that the death will happen, but the fakeouts keep the audience on their toes about how and when it will happen, which contributes to the building sense of dread.

SEIRAN WATCH YOUR BACK FUCK FUCK FUCKKKKKK
😭😭😭😭😭
was it ever established earlier why there aren't bodies to bury? It was only this ep i clocked that when they die they disintegrate. If they don't leave behind a pendant or something like that they just disappear, like they never existed in the first place
The orphans don't die at 10 and are instead sacrificed for a meaningless war at 14, 15, 16, 17. Is that really a better option?
It was foreshadowed almost from the start but it doesn't hurt any less. To give us posthumous scenes of seiran and ari just 😓
25
u/tealjaker94 14d ago
Sheena said in an earlier episode that they only have empty coffins because they each have a spell on them to disintegrate them after death so the enemy doesn’t get any intel from the body.

Like a billion death flags were being raised in this single episode alone, I thought the show would just psyche us out and NOT have Seiran killed. But then they just followed through with it as straightforward as possible, and I was still shocked and emotionally devastated. It's pretty interesting how the show managed to do that.
I guess we were let a little off guard with the war in general. We know a ton of nameless students have died but at some point we did stop worrying about Mimi since she was so OP and functionally immortal.
I honestly thought that at some point Ari's locket was some sort of bottled spell. Like a remote resurrection spell that would activate when Seiran is on the verge of dying at the cost of Ari's life. The irony would be how Ari ends up protecting Seiran and she'd become immortal but lose the very reason she was so insistent on fighting. I thought that Seiran feeling "cold" would be that. But then the show just played it completely straight.
I also wonder why the higher ups at this point don't employ more immortal zombie soldiers like Mimi. I know it's taboo magic, but the school isn't exactly up there in moral ethics anyway. Or is resurrection magic some long forgotten secret art that nobody knows how to cast?
We've had hints of it, but it's now blatantly clear that Fran and Omi do hate this system as well. She probably hates how Mimi is being used as a weapon as well and is trying to achieve something with pairing her up with Sheena.

My prediction is that that pendant will play a role in some resurrection magic and the other girl will sacrifice herself, i feel like that was the chekhov's gun.
17
u/runevault 14d ago
Will resurrection magic work without a body? I had the same thought when Ari gave it to her but now that she disintegrated I dunno...
10
u/Frozenkex 14d ago
Well they can make body parts purely out of magic like Sheena's hand, so maybe you just need a soul. Maybe soul got sucked into the pendant or something
→ More replies (1)9
u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago
Would Ari even want to do that to her? It would just mean the higher-ups could exploit her more. an immortal existence as a weapon doesn't seem like a great alternative

They were discussing the idea of resurrecting each other 2 or 3 episodes ago. so Ari was at least thinking about it. And it was Ari who brought it up.

Its crazy what we see they train for in the mock battle, all the dodging and skills Seiran has even if she's not a match for Mimi, only for none of it to really matter on the battlefield as someone can just kill you like that from behind. The whole thing feels utterly pointless. if you can't tank a single attack you won't really have an opportunity to show off your skills.
58
u/marshmallow_sunshine 14d ago
That's just war :( Doesn't matter how skilled you are, sometimes you get artillery dropped on your head or shot by someone you never even knew was there. Just look at what happens to Mimi. She frequently comes back in pieces and she's perhaps the strongest there is.

Theres a scene like that in my favorite book. Two epic warriors, both famous and feared in their respective countries, meet on the battlefield. They start having a literal battle of legend; neither able to even scratch the other.
Then one gets stabbed through the back by the spear of a no name, faceless person in the crowd, killing one of the most legendary warriors alive and unceremoniously ending the battle of their dreams.
10
u/BosuW 14d ago
I really like that contrast. Training scenes could almost make you believe you're in a battle shounen. Of course, that's by design. Tests are supposed to be passable. It's a chance for the students to show that they got what it takes.
But in the war scenes everything happens so quickly because no one out there is taking chances. It's one mistake and you're dead. Fear and experience makes them hyper optimize combat. Why engage anyone in a duel where it's 50-50 you live or die when you can just sneak from cover to cover ambushing enemies with long range spells? The real combat behaves really more like a modern shootout.

u/MIpoika https://myanimelist.net/profile/MIpoika 14d ago
The deathflags were especially present the entire episode so it was only a matter of time and thought I was ready for it to happen.
Spoiler alert: I wasn't and am currently an absolute mess.
It would feel cheap and lessen the impact of her death, but surely they'll bring Seiran back somehow, right? Right? I don't think I can bear to see Ari's reaction to the news next week...

I also thought that she could come back, but that magic just work with another person sacrificing themself. I 'm kinda concern that Ali is going to try something [dying in the process, and giving us an extra pain]

Seiran's combat readiness exam against Mimi was actually pretty damn cool. While Mimi was certainly taking it easy the entire time, Seiran definitely managed to trigger Mimi's killer instinct with her surprise attack. I wasn't worried about anything happening to Seiran that exam, but thank fuck, Omi-sensei ended it before things escalated.
The scene between Seiran and Mimi was pretty great. It again shows more of Mimi's emotional intelligence. Yeah, she was going easy on Seiran, but not because she looks down on her skill. She went easy because she doesn't want to get hurt, and she knows that Ari would be upset if Seiran gets hurt.
So Fran-sensei's goal was to show the Principal that these kids in Class 14 aren't ready yet. I mean, it's a good idea in principle, but it's not really gonna work when Seiran herself still volunteers to be put into combat. Fuck that Principal, tho. She could've said no instead of "respecting her wishes".
Ari was a maid in a brothel before they rescued her? Damn. There's only one way Ari's life would go if she wasn't rescued from that place. At least they live a somewhat normal life in the orphanage. Now I'm curious what Sheena's life was like before she was taken in.
It's been a few episodes since we've seen our last kiss! This is the part of the episode where I start getting nervous. That was definitely the start of Seiran's death flags in this episode.
I'm actually glad we see more of Esther-senpai. Considering how this episode ends, I think she's going to be a more prominent character in the series from now on. :(
There was no way Seiran would've died on her first outing, so I wasn't too surprised when she came back alive. I do like that they showed us her reaction after experiencing what it's like to take someone's life. That's definitely the eyes of someone who's been traumatized.
All of these scenes between Seiran and Ari, especially the one where Ari gives Seiran the bottled letter just keep raising her death flag higher and higher. The moment she started talking to Mimi about the pendant and giving all her hemostatic to that injured dude, her fate was pretty much sealed.
Fuck... I knew it was gonna happen, but I was still fucking shocked. How dare they give us false hope with Seiran showing up to camp, as if she managed to stop the bleeding. It turns out Seiran just used whatever she had left to make sure she got back. :(
Seeing Seiran turn into dust genuinely made me fucking bawl. When they said there's nothing left, they really meant it. If Mimi wasn't there to see it happen and pick up the pendant, no one would've known Seiran got back to camp. T_T
And just to twist the knife, of course we end the episode with a special duet ED featuring Ari and Seiran. Fuck me. I'm a grown-ass man and this fucking episode destroyed me. Legit had to take a moment before I started writing my thoughts about this episode. Next episode is going to be even more painful when Ari and Sheena finally hear the news. T_T

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 14d ago
Idk if these kids are really being “saved” from a life with no future. This place isn’t even a real school. It’s a slaughterhouse. The kids get fed, they get something of an education, and then they get sent out to die in the most horrific and painful manner. Not much of a future there if your name ain’t “Mimi.” I knew it wasn’t going to end well with Seiran with the amount of damn flags this episode. Poor kid. War is hell. It’s even worse when you’re a child soldier…

Yeah I was confused when they were talking about the kids graduating. Does anyone graduate?
I suppose it hasn't been explained why the magical child soldiers are more combat effective than the other forces, so maybe their power wanes after a certain age?

u/KJatWork 14d ago
During WW2, a new pilot's chances of being shot down was about 7%. That dropped to 1% by the time they were on their 10th mission and stayed low the rest of their career.
I think the same or similar would hold true here. Yes, there are those that die, but there are many that manage to survive just long enough to develop battlefield survival skills and situational awareness needed to stay alive. They aren't all "Aces" like Mimi, but most pilots in WW2 weren't aces either.
In Seiren's case, saving the wounded soldier pulled her out of combat mode just long enough that she made a rookie mistake letting her guard down and that was all it took.
Very rough episode to watch.
→ More replies (4)10
u/Random_eyes 13d ago
Not all combatants were equally likely to perish. In ww2, roughly 70% of German U-boat personnel died. 44% of British Bomber Command crews died in service.
Don't forget that this is portrayed as a brutal, long lasting war. One where each side is scraping the bottom of the barrel for more soldiers. The fact that so many combatants are children are a good indication that this war is not going well.
I would imagine some of the school kids will survive solely because they're not useful on the battlefield. Sheena would get blown to bits if she had to fight, for example. And the rest, well... What else do they do with their lives? It's not like the school is particularly invested in their futures. Maybe they just keep fighting until they too turn to ash.

I was really hoping the necklace contained the forbidden resurrection spell that Ari got off-screen and it would trigger the moment Seiran died, and that's why she got empty eyes at the end because she realized that happened.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 14d ago
(Also, that outfit/hairstyle/look is 10/10!)
Good lord, there were like 7 death flags already before the duel even began.
Mimi doesn't seem overly worried.. (and why would she? It's not like SHE can die!)
Seiran thought she would use that carelessness to go on the offensive, but fighting is second nature for Mimi!
(What worries me is that KILLING is second nature to Mimi... It's tough not to automatically do something you've trained to do without thinking!)
Girl, you DON'T want her to go all out...
She thought she had to prove herself, but I was worried that going too hard would cause Mimi to go into 'kill mode'!
Yeah. Kinda like that. Seiran: "This does not look like the face of mercy"
Seiran knew, Sheena knew,
thankfully the teacher knew too!
From the organization that turns these kids into warmongers...
I mean I get what she's saying, they need to teach them to be careful/value their lives and all, but
"Wait, you were actually trying, and you were that bad?" - Mimi
Planting more seeds in Mimi's mind!
Their lives weren't much better before either... Serving as a maid in a brothel, probably when she was like 10? And how long til they 'graduate' her from maid to..
The "See you later" promise, one last kiss,
Fran tried to knock some sense into her, at least...
Seiran thought she meant "You're not as strong as Mimi", and Fran had to spell out the obvious, the main difference between them not being power levels, but rather, immortality..
She made it back! Wait, let's count her limbs first.
She was down after killing someone...
And I can see why, I mean, even with the "was what I did evil?" thought that surely lingers, it's also the way they kill;
Probably makes them realize how small/insignificant a life is, and then you wonder what YOU are exactly, like did I train for half my life just so I can die in a split second like that and disappear?
"We don't have quite enough death flags yet, so here's a few more"
SEIRAN, my girl, I'm pretty sure "Don't let your guard down" DOES NOT mean stay still for a few seconds, daydreaming about random stuff people told you!

"I believe we should respect her wishes" is such a f***ing thing to say about a 14-year-old volunteering to die gloriously so her roommate/girlfriend doesn't have to. The sketchy council in charge of the war effort are monsters.
Edit to continue venting my anger: Oh sure, it's "we'll respect their wishes" when they're talking about sacrificing themselves, but it's back to "there's no other choice" when they don't want to die.

Goodbye Seiran. You did your duty good. Definitely useful.
I'm curious who's going to be affected most by the lost. Mimi's a wildcard because I think this is the closest person she's ever known actually die. Sheena's the most predictable for obvious reasons. Ari... probably thinks she's prepared, but who can really be sure?

Gonna predict that though it'll hit everyone else first, when the reality finally sets in it'll hit Mimi the hardest. The fact that big moment was only before her first mission and we didn't see the send off for the one she ultimately died in leaves a bittersweet taste. Sure we could assume she did the same thing for this mission, but by not showing it it feels like they all relaxed and stopped worrying after she made it back once and didn't give a proper goodbye.
15
18
u/JJVM99 14d ago
The moment Ari gave Seiran her gift and we kept having moments like Mimi telling her she will see her later, Seiran didn’t just have death flags at that point, she had an entire flag parade announcing what was going to happen.
Still her somehow making it back (which i’m not sure was actually real and maybe it was the magic making sure Ari’s gift got to Mimi) and then dying and vanishing in front of Mimi and nobody else noticing hit hard. If my theory of her actually not making it back and it being magic delivering the gift it could explain it but it could just be that everyone is so used to people dying in the battlefield that they don’t even notice that.

Something that confused me about the shot that killed Seiran is how it came from behind. She administered aid the to student, handed him over to the adult supervisor(?), moves along and gets shot immediately.
Also is there even any meaningful difference in clothing between them and the enemies? we've barely gotting glimpses of the latter. Was this friendly fire? Poor pacing? Yet another mystery to solve?
7
u/BosuW 14d ago
The combat outfits being similar I think is just the author isn't terribly concerned about the tactical details of combat. But I really like the theory about the friendly fire. That happens in war a lot too and yeah some people even die for such an absurd reason. Even more likely when the frontline is loose and fluid like we see in this story.
I'm reminded of how in the Ukraine War soldiers have taken to wrapping saturated yellow and blue bands on themselves to identify who's who, even though this messes with the camouflage. Friendly fire incidents happen anyway. Not all will be known. That's just war.

Reflecting on Seirans death I felt chills on my spine. It was to be expected but still... It was the depiction of her death. She just disappeared without anyone noticing beside Mimi. It wasn't dramatic or anything, instead it felt indifferent. Even the companions passing by Mimi, saying "What was that noise?" answered with "Just your imagination"... It probably reflected it perfectly what it's like to be in war. They die silently, without a heroic end. And the world just carries on.

Mimi is a beast as expected, thankfully Sheena was able to stop her from going on a rampage.
Ari kissing Seiren is exactly what I wanted to see.

Bloody hell, things have taken a turn for the worse so quickly!
Ari's worried sick ever since the first day of Lizzy's deployment. That time she went back pretty unscathed (save for the mental trauma of having to kill) but the second...
Yeah, she might've been preparing herself for this outcome but she'd still be gravely affected when it eventuated. She once brought up the topic of the resurrection spell. Would she consider using that? Not sure if it's even feasible seeing as Ari's body no longer existed.
Their only kiss on-screen ended up being the last. We also didn't get to see their farewell before the second deployment. Perhaps we'll get a flashback to it next week if there's a focus on Ari's perspective.

I can't think of a better depiction of how hellish the war truly is. Thrown into a conflict with enemies everywhere, one second of bad luck and you're dead.

One thing how magic gets treated is that it feels very gunlike if that makes sense like it has a lot of out of combat things but in combat it is essentially a gun in how quickly and cruelly it cuts shorts life. It really gives death a different tone, it really gives death a different tone nothing is drawn out theres no brave duels or anything thats usually in fantasy settings just one second and their life is over put on a very short timer if not cut short that instant.
