Dying Day spends the episode unloading salt in the wound with past Seiran moments. And they're wholesome ones, which in a vacuum, would be uplifting. But in practice, it's the opposite knowing such a beautiful life was taken away.
Poor Ari.

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 7d ago
I am glad that Ari was finally able to feel like she could cry. That line from Mimi 'I don't think she'd be mad' hit hard because I have known people IRL, who have felt that crying would upset the person who died, or make them feel bad that their death hurt someone they cared about so much.
Then, that ending. Oof. Mimi, no.
21
u/Prestigious_Spend_81 6d ago
What if what the teacher told is wrong? Like Mimi knows the spell to bring someone back to life, but it only last for a few minutes and the person who cast it is "Cursed" to be immortal.
In the story the teacher told Mimi's mom used the spell to revive her, but what if it was the other way around? More people would want to try it it out and so they had to come-up with something.
Mimi is dense af, but I don't think she would suggest Airi to do a spell that would kill her.
42
u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 6d ago edited 6d ago
First, I disagree with your assessment of Mimi. She isn't dense - she's immature. She's developed herself a lot thanks to no longer being locked in a basement and being able to interact with Sheena and the others. The fact that she was able to intuit what Ari was thinking and essentially gave her permission to cry shows that she can pick up on others' emotions, body language, and thoughts.
Also, I don't think she was saying that Ari should do the spell; I think Mimi was willing to do it. Seiran was the first death that has actually affected Mimi in all the years she'd been alive. She may feel like she cannot stand to ever see another person she's friends with die (edit: and may understand that the only way to end her never-ending cycle of pain is to die herself. Edit 2: I also wonder if Mimi thinks because she is immortal, she could use the spell and 'die' but then come back?).
But most importantly, if they did revive Seiran, it would put her in Mimi's position. Cursed to fight in every fight and be chopped to shreds, suffering in pain till she reformed. None of us want that for Mimi, so there is absolutely no way we'd want that for Seiran, and hopefully Ari will not allow her grief to blind her to that likely outcome.
You may be 100% right, and Fran lied about Mimi's past. This show is incredibly well written, so I could see an odd twist like that happening, but I am not sure it makes much sense.
7
u/Prestigious_Spend_81 6d ago
We don't know how old Mimi actually is maybe Fran is only repeating the version told her when she got the job.
The whole war and the teacher higher -ups are sketchy and pass a 1984 vibe to it, they are in war against a undisclosed enemy since who knows. What happens with the graduated students, if any actually graduates and the school is not just a child soldier canon folder factory or some kind of hunger games shenanigans.
6
u/rainbowrobin 5d ago
In episode 4, Mimi said that she's older than the school, remembers when it was "the Archive".
6
u/BeatMastaD 6d ago
Im not sure what youre trying to say, it makes perfect sense that you van revive someone but its forbidden and doesnt make sense that instead you become immortal by reviving someone?
9
u/Prestigious_Spend_81 6d ago
I mean the revival spell could be a monkey's pawn, the person is revived but for a short amount of time and the caster is cursed with immortality.
In this case Mimi reviewed her mother and became immortal, but this side-effect can be seem as a net positive for other people so the school passed along the version that the caster dies instead and called it taboo.

god this episode was hard to watch great episode but it was more painful then episode 7.

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 7d ago
I said it last episode. We all knew her death was coming with the blatant death flags, which made you be ready for it. This Episode was going to be the rougher one with people having to deal with the fact she is gone.
58
u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 7d ago
I remember most viewers last episode were devastated by the death even knowing it was coming, and it seems the general reaction here (thus far) is that this episode is indeed worse.
Though a couple last week did find that the death flags were enough to weaken most of the impact. I'll have to see what they think of this episode.
29
u/BosuW 7d ago
Im a manga reader so I know both what was coming and how. Even so, I felt they leaned too much into it for it to hit. I was indeed saddened but not how much I expected or remembered from reading the manga.
This episode though, oh yeah it's hitting now. I'm sorry KimiShinu anime adaptation, I wasn't familiar with your game.
14
u/AlexHallon https://kitsu.io/users/AlexHallon 6d ago edited 3d ago
I think her death was a phenomenal example of why predictability does not equal bad writing, rather it's often the opposite. The sheer dread of the foreshadowing coupled with the multiple fakeouts made for a devastating ride. I don't think it would've hit as hard if we didn't have a full episode of obvious buildup.
33
u/YuushyaHinmeru 7d ago
Honestly, the insane amount of flags made it more suspenseful. I knew people would die based on the premise of the show so it wouldn't have surprised. But know who it was and that it was happening that episode kept me on edge. Its like riding a drop Rollercoaster. You dont know when its coming so youre just constantly clench everytime you hear a creek
10
u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 7d ago
Personally I didn't feel much last episode because I saw it coming. But I am also kinda weird in that I expect any character to die at any time in any show (I watched too many anime with sudden deaths/kills). So maybe I am just the outlier there.
9
u/Internal-Pea-7451 https://anilist.co/user/MistEu 6d ago
I think it can depend on the execution of the death itself, even if you see it coming.
I'm going to glaze a bit since it's my favourite, but in 86 [spoilers for 86]We ALL knew Eugene was going to die, but the way they hard cut from him smiling with the the picture of his sister, to his severed arm holding the same picture, made it still hit really hard. I don't think anyone expected it to occur so quickly and in that manner. Of course that's just one way to make an obvious death impactful, and I think they did a decent job here too. I think it could have been slightly better, but I can't put my finger on what could have changed, and I'm not a writer so, just my personal opinion.

Yeah, I think this episode and last week’s are going on the very exclusive list of episodes I love and think are brilliant, but I’m never watching again for my own well being. It just goes to show how great this anime is.

I've known it for weeks, thanks to my very stupid decision to click on a spoiler in the source corner.
I've decided to stab myself in the hand the next time I try to do that.
23
u/Elifia 7d ago
Last week's episode was really hard on me. Those scenes of Seiran dying tormented every free thought I had for days. Somehow this is still worse. It left me crying uncontrollably until well after the episode ended, and even now after having regained my composure I'm still a mess. I don't even think I can watch Fighting Games in this state...
38
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 7d ago
For real, having half of this episode dedicated to Ari and Seiran's flashbacks was such a cruel move, now that Seiran is gone and those two won't be together again.
11
u/BBryant3rd 7d ago
Yes it was. Didn't help seeing Mimi looking broken at the start then seeing Ari being so happy just before it all happened. They are my favorite two.

The direction and cinematography in this show is really good.

u/YuushyaHinmeru 7d ago
God damn, every episode ends on such an emotionally intense note.
This anime deserves to be higher rated than it is. Behind the big hitter sequels, I dont think theres a single show that has me as engaged as this.

u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
Same, this anime does definitely deserve to be higher rated, but this season is so stacked there’s like 5 shows I’m watching this season I could say that about.
8
u/Nikita2337 6d ago
It's honestly doing pretty well ranking wise as it shows on most of the top10s that I sometimes see. IMDB scores are pretty high too, it's really just the season being stacked that hurts its popularity I think.
9
u/CitronClassic672 6d ago
Talk about it, I have followed anime for as long as probably the majority of this sub, but this summer still feels like one of the most stacked anime seasons ever.
6
u/YuushyaHinmeru 6d ago
Really? I havent been interested in much that wasnt a sequel season of an already popular anime.

It’s episodes like this that really make me think “What am I doing? These aren’t real people. They’re just drawings with the voices of actually real people. Why am I sad when they’re sad? Why do I cry when one of them dies, despite them not even being alive to begin with. But then again, those feelings are the reason I love animation to begin with.”

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 6d ago
I feel you, friend. I find myself mumbling something about how I am almost 50, in between wiping tears off my face, while simultaneously praying my coworkers don't hear my sobs.
I was planning on starting Love Unseen, but having seen some clips on Facebook, I think I will hold off on that till later this year because I don't know if I can handle that and this at the same time.

Oh thank god. I spent the whole episode thinking ari was going to kill herself. Whoever wrote this episode is a real son of a bitch. Whose idea was it to make me this melancholy on a Tuesday morning? That whole episode was just salt in a wound, and then mimi's surprise declaration at the end really makes it worse. The idea that seiran could end up coming back only to be tasked with dying over and over and over again in the war just like mimi is horrific, even if it would offer ari some (probably temporary) relief from her grief
26
u/YuushyaHinmeru 7d ago
Someone has to die to bring her back. Assuming the resurrection isnt what made mimi kind of a ditz and she was always just like that, if seiran is brought back to life only to find she can never die and that ari killed herself to make it happen, she will absolutely lose it.
8
u/PersonalContest1423 7d ago
If ari died to make it happen that would be so so dumb. Thats basically just shifting her grief onto seiran but an even worse grief for seiran given ari would have died specifically for her. Shit if the death doesnt have to be willing mimi needs to snatch one of the enemy and make it home in one piece next battle so they have someone to sacrifice
→ More replies (1)9
u/YuushyaHinmeru 7d ago
It doesnt strike me as something they'd do for that reason but Ari specifically says she thinks the whole thing sounds romantic in an earlier episode.
I dont personally remember this but a lot of other people are saying they mentioned it had to be someone close to the deceased so there are really only 3 options unless mimi has hax
4
u/PersonalContest1423 7d ago
Imagine they sacrifice mimi since she presumably wouldnt die from it
10
u/runevault 7d ago
My assumption is the only way to truly kill a resurrected person is for them to do it to someone else, thus passing on the curse.

u/CitronClassic672 7d ago

This was such a beautiful episode that showed the joys that war steal people of. Kudos to Yui Ishikawa on her work this episode. Ari’s cries during prayer time were so haunting and raw.
Ari and Seiran were so cute together and I’m glad Seiran got to try out the nail polish. It’s so awful that their joyful time together was robbed so soon. I’d like to think that Seiran was somehow able to read that letter.
I want to rewatch these last two episodes as they were fantastically done, but wow are they also painful to experience.
28
u/BosuW 7d ago
Kudos to Yui Ishikawa on her work this episode. Ari’s cries during prayer time were so haunting and raw.
I'm always concerned in such moments they're gonna do the typical anime wail (if you've watched enough anime you know what I'm talking about and it usually takes you out of the moment).
She didn't. Ow my heart. Thats why she's one of the greatest in the business (and probably kudos to the voice direction as well for just letting her handle it).
18
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
One of the rare times I’ve genuinely wanted to reach through the screen and give a character a hug and comfort them myself. I’m glad Ari at least had Sheena in that moment.
40
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yui Ishikawa has quickly become enough to get me to watch a show on its own. She’s especially killed it in recent yuri works.
Something that stood out to me were Ari’s sharp inhales between cries. I don’t think I’ve usually seen that in crying scenes. At least not that pronounced.

That may be the point. It doesn't matter what the war is about or why, the girls dont have a choice but to fight. They dont see any benefit from the war and also pay the highest prices to wage it. The only people who can believe war is worth the cost are those who arent paying the price.

Their nation or whatever is desperate enough from a demographic standpoint to concsript teenage girls for war, the one singular demographic you do not under any circumstances want to send off to war and they dont even have dedicated combat medics or basic Casevac/Medevac. The problem with that is that we learn in Episode 4 that someone else needs to sacrifice their own life to resurrect someone. And it can't just be any random person. It needs to be someone who has a deep connection with the person they're resurrecting.

I really enjoyed how this episode harkened back to the earlier episodes. Intially we started with Sheena's roommate dying. We had the same annoucment at the start of class. We had the room cleaning scene. We also had the empty casket burial.
So to go through the same things but recontextualized since we know the girl who died now was a great choice. Albeit painful. A really great way to bring things back around to how they initially started.
10
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
I swear they wanted us to feel indifferent to the death of Sheena’s roommate at the start in order to twist the knife in this episode. It hits different when it’s someone you care about that dies, huh?

Mimi's character development is already being displayed in this episode. Showing empathy and asking the tough questions to understand Ari's feelings. Finally allowing Ari to express those tears she's been holding back. She does have a habit of leaving the viewers and characters with bombshells to end episodes.
53
u/Narlaw 7d ago
Ah yes, the classic twisting knife episode after a character dies... I also only noticed now how the opening forshadowed Seiran's death, in the part where she is over a ruin while holding Ari's hand, then next shot we see the "widow" senpai, then very next shot is Ari alone on a bed in the dark... Also what a bombshell at the end!
23
u/kicksFR 7d ago
I also noticed that in the opening. Wonder what other spoilers are hidden there.
16
u/Despair_Head 7d ago
I think the first still that happens in the middle of the episode can be one. Everyone is standing and looking out at the horizon while Seiran is sitting, facing away from the horizon with her eyes closed.
16
u/marshmallow_sunshine 7d ago
This episode covered some of my favorite sections of the manga. It hit me in the feels just as much as when I read it the first time. I'm happy we got such a beautiful adaptation <3
46
u/i_know_the_void 7d ago
Having to go through a loved one’s belongings after their death is particularly painful. Showing Ali just sitting there, numb, for hours and then sobbing at the service was on point for conveying the range of emotions experienced during grieving. I wish we could have more Ali/Seiran moments.
Edit: fixed a typo. I was too busy feeling sad to write well.

I knew this episode would be sad. Mimi wasn't her usual cheery self, either. She didn't spend as much time with Seiran as the others did, but she clearly misses her. I don't like where that suggestion of hers is going. Someone will have to be sacrificed for it to work.

Episode 7 stabbed me and apparently you can also be stabbed again and again :> this anime was so beautiful yet so depressing at the same time.
It showed us how different people handle grief, and how wars steal lives. The author was so on point in illustrating this so melancholy.
Thank God After all this sadness I’ll get to watch young ladies 😭
17
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
Ari’s line of “If I opened up about it, I’d probably fall apart.” Was so excruciatingly relatable for me that it hurts, ugh. Though she at least had Sheena and Mimi to comfort her when she finally did break down. That’s probably healthier than just completely blocking it out and always focusing on other stuff like… some people.
This felt more like episode 7 stabbed us, and then this episode reminded us how happy we were before we got stabbed.
29
u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 7d ago
Of course they would choose to show us all the Ari Seiran domestic fluff moments now. A painful ep, but they handled Ari's reaction to the whole thing really well, and props to Sheena and Mimi for supporting her.
No way they go through with Mimi's proposal right? If I recall correctly the resurrection spell requires someone to give up their life.
31
u/Carbonated_Static 7d ago
That was really well done. A lot of anime have the episode after a character dies be very on the nose, hitting the viewer over the head going "hey this is sad, you should feel sad now" and it often ends up working against them.
This wasn't that. Even with Mimi literally asking about Ari being sad. It felt a lot more natural reminiscing about their time together while cleaning Seiran's things with Ari trying to be strong and the initial numbness and then it hitting. It was all the better for it.
But fucking hell man, fuck.
13
u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 7d ago
I thought it was a bittersweet but nice story as I was watching it, but then Mimi dropped a bombshell at the end, and I couldn't help but laugh.
The scene where Seiran paints Ali’s toenails was somehow really sensual and memorable.
There was also a scene with toenail polish in Botan Kamiina, but why are scenes featuring toenail polish in yuri anime so memorable? I love how sensuality and beauty coexist in those moments.
15
u/Kegs_And_Parleys https://anilist.co/user/SajjieSajj 7d ago
Mimi made me happy with the "I don't think she would be mad" comment before Ari turned to tears.
Mimi made me absolutely horrified with the "Do you want to see Seiran again?" comment after Ari calmed down and learned that Seiran saved a life of another student. I hope Sheena stops her or if she can perhaps make a short term connection with her soul.
Holy shit what an absolute rollercoaster. With how brutally blunt Seiran's death was last episode, seeing the Seiran x Ari flashbacks, knowing how close they were really did hit hard.
Why do I have to like yuri so much ffs this shit is not good for me.
26
u/Armdel https://myanimelist.net/profile/Armdel 7d ago
ofcourse they have to torment us by showing Ari and Seiran happy together
And naturally Ari would break down eventually.. with a little help from Mimi's bluntness
and speaking of Mimi, that is quite the proposal from her at the end there. next episode should be interesting

Mimi always asking the uncomfortable questions. That last one though bringing someone back from the dead was forbidden wasn't it? and it kills the user and makes the revived immortal. Would that spell kill Mimi since she's already immortal? Considering how desperate this war is I'm assuming the spell would kill Mimi because otherwise the teachers would be heavily incentivised to turn everyone into immortal soldiers with just 1 sacrifice. Very cruel to dedicate this whole episode to remembering and mourning Seiran and to drop the bombshell at the end that she can still be brought back. She doesn't even have a body and the funeral was about sending her soul to heaven. That spell is really crazy if it can actually revive her.
7
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 7d ago
Mimi did drop kind of an insane question at the end. She might not understand the full ramifications of reviving the dead. For example: another user pointed out that the sacrifice of someone (very) close to the deceased is needed for the spell to work.

Fuck, that whole episode was brutal. But man, I really hope Ari doesn’t take Mimi up on her offer. No one should be using that level of magic. There’s a reason that shit is taboo. Manipulating death like that definitely takes something away from the person. If they bring Seiran back, Ari has to pay the blood price. And then what happens to Seiran? How’s she gonna live with that burden?

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
Imagine Mimi spews a very tone deaf comment like, ''Let's kidnap some random dude no one cares about to bring back your girl. Easy peasy.''
Of course, the resurrection spell requires giving up your life, so it won't be easy unless Mimi knows some other way to resurrect without sacrificing the user's life.

I'm really hoping that's gonna be Sheena's secret life magic talent but I doubt it lol.
14
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
Yeah I think that is gonna be the dilemma. Ari not being able to go on living without Seiran vs forcing Seiran to go on living without her.

What if Mimi can perform the spell but can bypass the sacrifice since she's already immortal

I highly doubt the magic will be forbidden if there was a loophole like that.

Considering Mimi can come back from brutal injuries and near death experiences, she might know something.

Seeing Seiran die has clearly shaken Mimi. I don't think we've ever seen her return from battle with that look in her eyes. Mimi has seen plenty of deaths, but it's pretty clear that this is the first time she's seen the death of someone close to her. Curious to see how this will affect her moving forward.
The wounds from last week are still raw, so I did not expect them to pour salt on it with those flashbacks for Ari and Seiran being flirty and just enjoying each other's company. There were so many cute moments, like when Ari suggested using her bed as storage so they could sleep together on Seiran's bed and the two of them painting each other's toenails.
I was so glad when Sheena and Mimi visited Ari to help her pack Seiran's things and even stay in her room so she wouldn't feel lonely. It really sucks to see just the three of them. :(
I kinda understand what Omi-sensei was trying to say here, but the principal could've literally prevented this from happening if she just told Seiran that she's not fit for combat after failing the readiness exam, instead of accepting her request to volunteer.
I have been on the verge of tears this entire episode, but what really made the dam burst was during prayer time when Mimi finally gave Ari the pendant she made for Seiran back and Ari finally had the chance to let the tears flow. I genuinely had to pause the episode there because I was genuinely crying. T_T
Not gonna lie, I was surprised to see the guy Seiran saved. I honestly appreciate him telling Ari what happened and how guilty he felt about her using all of her hemostatic on him. It's not gonna change anything, I think Ari is glad that Seiran managed to save someone.
Mimi, what are you doing? I guess it makes sense that she knows the same spell her mother used on her all those years ago, but I think it's a very bad idea to resurrect Seiran. Also, if I recall correctly, resurrection magic needs you to sacrifice your own life to perform it. Nothing good will come out of this. >_<

Mimi might be tactless, but it's clear that she cares about the people around her and that she doesn't know how she's supposed to deal with Seiran's death. I like how this was depicted in this episode, with her being very quiet while she helped Ari sort through Seiran's stuff, her contemplative stare at the casket, and then the question at the end.
Now the question is what she means by "knowing resurrection magic" though. Can she use it herself, without dying? Does she expect someone else to do it? Or has she simply not really thought about any of this?
17
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
This may not have been the intention behind Mimi’s reaction, but I also found it very relatable as someone who doesn’t respond to close people dying in the typical, sadness way, but in a more numb manner. Her dead eyed look at Sheena at the beginning was also very striking, like she still didn’t even know how to process it.

u/DemonWraith2500 7d ago
This episode is hurt to watch.
Mimi! You can't just go around and teach people how to revive the dead.

u/Strange_theDreamer 7d ago
Jokes on you, I was planning to ugly cry at 3 AM.
I’m glad Mimi reacted appropriately to the situation, despite her nonchalant attitude towards death before. Her asking Ari why she’s smiling was pretty nice too. I can see that she’s becoming more emotionally mature in this episode.
I wish Ari had been honest and asked Seiran not to go. Also, did Seiran get to read the letter?
Mimi dropping the bomb that she actually knows the resurrection spell right at the end… wow. It was removed from all the textbooks, but did the authorities account for the fact that Mimi knows how to perform it? I know it was banned and highly illegal, but it could’ve turned the war in their favor.

Mimi has always had deceptively high emotional intelligence. She noticed Sheena’s distress and tried to cheer her up when they took a bath.

u/MIpoika https://myanimelist.net/profile/MIpoika 7d ago
Holy hell this was hard to watch. Here's some of my messy and disorganized thoughts...
Ari remembering the good times she had with Seiran felt like salt to the wounds for us viewers...and seeing her so depressed, just hurts somehow...
One thing I do really really appreciate, however, is how Sheena and Mimi were there for Ari; Sheena seeing right through her and even "refusing" to leave her by herself, despite Ari claiming to be fine...
Last week's episode shocked me so bad (despite knowing it was coming) that it took me literal days to fully recover, but no tears. This time, I actually started crying the moment Ari started crying - and I don't cry easily...
And Mimi's offer...I somehow have a bad feeling about it. On the one hand, I'd really love to see Ari reunited with Seiran and them happy again; but on the other hand, there's probably some "but" or fucked-up condition to Mimi's offer that causes Ari to ultimately turn it down...
I have so much to say that I could go on for the rest of the day, but I'll stop here.
26
u/WhoiusBarrel 7d ago
I was prepared to face this day if it eventually came.
Perfectly sums up not just Ari's situation but the viewers watching as well... Last week's ED with Seiran and Ari was a sneak peek to this episode's flashbacks of them together, just to drive the knife deeper into this emotional wound.
Building up to Ari breaking down during the funeral after all that was like just waiting for the eventual water dam to finally burst.
8
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
Just like Ari, us viewers were fully prepared for Seiran’s death for a while before it happened, and also like Ari just because we were prepared for it didn’t stop it from hurting immensely.

Rubbing salt in the wound: The episode.
I´m glad she cried at the end, holding everything back is not for your health
But even if Mimi knows the spell, I doubt she uses it. You have to sacrifice a live for another to come back right?
15
u/eightcheesepizza 7d ago
It's ok everyone, I remembered to watch my Tuesday yuri in the sad-first order this week!
I wonder what Omi-sensei is thinking, what her plan is. It can't be more of the same, but what is there to do if these kids are your best military asset and the country is desperate to survive?
The long-anticipated temptation of forbidden magic has arrived. But is it going to be the same magic that resurrected Mimi? Mimi said she spent a long time in the ground, and her resurrection requires her body parts to be collected together, so how will they do it without Seiran's body?
6
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
With each passing episode I’m more and more convinced the country isn’t worth it if it requires child soldiers to fight and die to preserve itself.
This episode wasn’t even typical sadness. It’s like an ever present emptiness driven by a Seiran shaped hole in the story.

u/Tanyan-nightchord 7d ago
Yeah at this point, it feels like choose the lesser bad course of action, get annexed (assuming the enemies are not genocidal maniacs) or slowly sacrifice everyone who can somehow fight and even those who can't, until the enemy breaks through anyway. The answer is obvious... Of course, we know basically nothing about this war in the grand scheme of things. Which is kind of okay because this is a character driven story, but some more world building would be appreciated.

I feel like Ari would absolutely sacrifice herself for Seiran, they even talked about it earlier in the series. I don't think Ari would want Seiran to live an immortal life of battle however, so she's probably going to turn Mimis offer down.
That was a sad episode, they really were a lovely budding couple. There's something about finding love in adversity that just pulls on the heart strings.
I was a bit worried earlier in the season that the series was struggling to find its place between the slice is life and background of the horrors of war, but it's blending the two better now, in a sad kind of way.

Damn! Those flashbacks of Ari and Seiran lasting half of this episode were like rubbing salt into the flesh wound that Seiran's death was. They really want to make Seiran's death even more painful for us.
And now Mimi wants to resurrect Seiran with a magic spell? It is a tempting proposition, though I don't believe that Ari will agree to that.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I mean, I doubt Mimi herself can cast it since she is basically a walking corpse. So, someone will have to die...
Also, I don't think bringing back the person that died in this cruel war as an immortal soldier to be abused for all eternity like Mimi is a good idea even is no one had to die...
4
u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 7d ago
Yeah, I don't condone the resurrection, not to mention the immortality. Who knows what the enemy would do to her if they captured her and discovered she was immortal
16
u/break80 7d ago
Really good depiction of losing a significant & immediate person to you. Initially the sadness doesn’t hit as hard due to several factors, like making arrangements, pure shock, & just the idea that truly embracing what’s happened would be too unbearable to comeback from. So a lot of the emotional experience that is initially felt, is ironically just this overwhelming numbness where time flows differently. And then the tsunami of sadness & grief hits you that you’d never imagine you could ever feel.

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 7d ago
Serian's death seems to shake Mimi harder than I expected tbh.
Okay, spending half of the episode on a flashback of these two was pretty evil, they are just twisting the knife at this point...
Seeing Ari breakdown after holding it in the entire episode actually made me cry... (Also, think it's interesting that it's Mimi's words that finally allowed her to let go)
Damn it... I knew she will say something insensitive by accident

Same. I'd been holding it in as much as possible throughout the episode. I don't think I have been this emotionally slapped by a show in quite a while.
14
u/dinliner08 7d ago
first they used the special visuals on last episode ending song and now they gave use an episode with half of it being a flashback to Seiran and Ari's slice of life moment, they sure knew how to twist the knife

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
Mimi: ''Let's dabble in a little necromancy, shall we? 5 minute adventure through the valley of death. Seiran will be back kissing you in no time.''
I highly doubt Seiran will be brought back, either because Mimi doesn't know how to use the spell properly, because Ari refuses, or because a teacher stops them. If Seiran is brought back it hurts the whole scene.

What am I doing crying so early in the morning bro.
They really had to rub salt on the wound with those happy yuri scenes in the beginning huh?

What a tear-jerker this episode was !
Ali reminiscing wistfully all the happy moments that she shared with Seiren made me cry rivers.
Just when I thought that Mimi was really acting serious she had to joke like that. She's joking, right ?! 😮

u/Optimal-Medium491 7d ago
I thought previous episode was worse, in terms yeah you knew what was coming with all those death flags and i think the flashbacks made it easier to watch for me, instead of having full episode with Ari having a mental breakdown.
That ending also, wow.
8
u/AdStellasNovas2234 7d ago
Watching the flashbacks of Seiran and Ali’s deep bond was absolutely heartbreaking.
The way Ali tried so desperately to hold back her tears only amplified the overwhelming sadness of the atmosphere.
Overall, a remarkably powerful episode capturing the raw weight of grief.

Really hoped as the episode was coming to a close that resurrection was off the table and my prediction was wrong. But now I have another week to dread the possibility. Fuck man. These last two weeks have been mean between this and Love Unseen.

A very beautiful episode. Fan must have blown dust in my eyes. That ending though, leave it to Mimi to casually offer to bring Seiran back. Not enough episodes in the season for this! Is this LN or manga? Has it been translated? Going to check it out after the season is over.

Ali & Seiran were not just roommates, but bedmates as well. They jumped on each other, flirted with each other, polished each others' nails. The first half of the episode was pretty much them having the times of their lives around the other. Normally scenes like this would warm my heart and spiked my blood sugar level, but given that Seiran's no longer with the living they instead chilled my heart – the mismatch between the scenes and the feelings they evoked was quite unnerving. Quite a diabolical move by the show.
Ali's normally all smiles but this time she had a dejected look with shadows covering the top half of her face. There's no way she'd take Seiran's death well but this just demonstrated the toll it had taken on her soul – no amount of preparation would help her with it.
Mimi knew the spell that her mother used on her? Ali looked intrigued but would she be tempted to go all the way, knowing that it'd cost her own life? They once talked about this, but now the situation's no longer hypothetical.

A few episodes ago, when they first learned about the spell, Ari implied that she would absolutely be down to use it for Seiran. So I guess that's coming.

u/AliceinTeyvatland 7d ago
Yeah my nope senses are tingling when they brought up the idea of resurrection.
I wonder how Ari would react, she's the most reserved in all of the cast, so it's nice finding out her expressing different emotions this past episodes. Maybe she'll lash out and raise her voice?
Anyway the last girl x girl resurrection that I've seen on an anime doesn't end well for both parties, it's a cooking anime lol

u/PowerfulRoom813 7d ago
I think we can give Mimi a pass for being disrespectful this once, she not really the best on communicating her thoughts before speaking even if we know she meant well lol

u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
It's also because Mimi is mentally a child frozen in time. Her social etiquette is terrible overall, but her friends know she bears no malice, just childish curiosity.

Only two episodes of all the anime I've watched have actually made me cry. Those two episodes belong to a certain Key series that aired last year. This episode was extremely close to making it number 3. I started tearing up when Mimi took out the necklace that Ari had given to Seiran. I almost lost it when Ari took it and started crying.
