Multiple people in last week's thread objected to the use of the resurrection magic to revive Seiran, and so does Ari for good reason.

During a walk, the more I thought about it, the more the implications of the magic bothered me: what happens if Seiran gets captured by the enemy, they discover she's immortal, and then they do all sorts of inhumane shit I'm not going to explicitly name? How much will the survivor's guilt accumulate over the decades of witnessing others pass away?

With the grimness out of the way, that wholesome hug and handhold at the end.

u/CitronClassic672 5h ago

It’s a small detail, but I really love how much wholesome hugging and physical affection is in this show. I think different cultural standards make such things a bit less common in anime vs western media and so I’m always happy to see it. It always really stands out as a light in the darkness and pain of this series.

9

u/BosuW 4h ago

That difference probably gets lost in the cultural divide. I imagine for Japanese viewers, how intimate the students in this Institute are with each other really highlights even more how deeply they value their every moment together.

There are a few manga that are starting to include this these days. Main one being a certain title available on MangaPlus, which is an official manga app/site from Shueisha.

Yeah, it only kinda worked out for Mimi cause she was made immortal when so young and then kept away from people, so although still pretty unrealistic, she didn't really age mentally nor thought too hard about stuff.

Also we learned today it worked out only because her mother was a powerful healer, so no resurrections for anyone for the time being. Except maybe from Sheena one day, if she completes her training, feels like author setting up something for the very end of the story.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but... For Mimi;

I was talking about this in another comment, now that Mimi experienced loss, I feel like it will affect her in one of two ways, either she won't want to fight anymore (because it's so horrible), OR the opposite, she'll want to fight even harder, to prevent other of her friends from dying...

But if it's the latter, she may push too far/take risks because she can't die, and might find herself captured or something similar

29

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 9h ago

Knowing that Ari and Seiran already had the resurrection magic conversation, I'm not surprised Ari refused Mimi's offer. And Ari makes a good point: Seiran would be upset if someone else traded their life to bring her back.

Oh no, we get a new opening and it's the second half of the song with new visuals. We've only started the episode, and the new opening is already making me tear up. Interestingly, Haru and Esther are very prominent in the new OP. I guess that means we'll see them more.

Mimi has probably fought alongside a lot of people over the years and has seen a lot of them die too, but this is probably the first time she's experienced loss like this since her mom sacrificed herself to bring her back. It really shows that this is the first time she's cared for someone like this.

That scene with Sheena and Mimi might be cute, but the fact that Sheena makes a point that Mimi needs to learn how to make her own onigiri makes it obvious that Sheena is teaching Mimi to make her own food because she knows she won't be around Mimi forever.

So they really don't go into battle until they've reached Class 17. Yeah, that really puts it into perspective how early Seiran went into battle. And when they've reached Class 17, and the war isn't over, it looks like Sheena won't have any other choice but to be deployed.

In a show that has magic, I'd like to believe that that was really Seiran's spirit checking on Mimi. I'm kinda hoping we'd see Seiran visit Ari one last time, but I don't think I'll be able to handle it T_T

So Sheena's magic is actually healing magic, which while it sounds similar, is different from restoration magic. And we have confirmation that those little green motes of light around Sheena whenever she hugs Mimi are her unknowingly using healing magic.

Being able to revive plants and get more yields from plants that can be used in medicine is actually a pretty big deal. Unfortunately, Sheena's magic is nowhere near strong enough to be used on people. Hey, at least Sheena now has something to strive for!

Sheena and Mimi's mom have the same kind of magic? I guess that explains why Mimi is naturally attracted to Sheena and why Mimi thinks that Sheena smells like her mom. That might also be the reason why Fran-sensei picked Sheena to watch over Mimi.

Mimi must've been so scared when she woke up and couldn't find Sheena in their room. I am interested in Sheena's magic activating when she was holding hands with Mimi. I guess that healing magic must've been very comforting for Mimi.

19

u/Myrkrvaldyr 9h ago

it looks like Sheena won't have any other choice but to be deployed.

Part of me wonders if they have employment alternatives for the students that graduate but are still too weak to battle. Sheena until now hadn't showed a sense of urgency to get stronger. If she hadn't discovered her healing magic, and was going to still get deployed at 17, she was gonna die on her first day.

5

u/BosuW 4h ago

From what Sheena was saying about the classes this episode it is implied that once you're in class 16 everyone gets sent to battle.

So "students that are too weak to battle" simply don't survive to graduate.

3

u/eightcheesepizza 2h ago

Being able to revive plants and get more yields from plants that can be used in medicine is actually a pretty big deal.

Hopefully Sheena takes up Fran's offer to work in the nurse's office. I'm sure Fran would like to source her own tobacco.

Its interesting that this is the first time we learned that attempting the resurrection spell has a high failure rate. In a different timeline if Ari tried to do it for Seiran she'd probably just die without reviving her. I wanted to know more about what Mimi's plan was with the spell, was she planning to cast it herself or have Ari do it? Does she know its very hard to use and can fail? Since she is immortal if she used it would she still die? Another random thought I had this episode is that Mimi gets hungry a lot, but what would happen if she starved, since she can't die? It kind of feels like there are loopholes to the immortality by having an immortal cast the resurrection spell and failing, resulting in their death and no new immortals, so there is a way to free yourself from the immortality. The alternative is you can just make everyone in the world immortal by reviving 1 person who can perform the spell and that person revives everyone.

11

u/Alej_11 8h ago

Mimi is closer to a zombie, probably she can't cast it because she hasn't a life to trade. Also if it was possible she would use her life, she cared for seiran but not enough to leave sheena

3

u/kicksFR 7h ago

I think maybe Mimi can pass the immortality curse to Seiran and she will age normally

2

u/Wurzelrenner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wurzeldieb 2h ago

I had the same thought, but this would be very powerful as you could resurrect people in a chain without any cost but the life of the first caster(if they can cast the spell sucessfully)

7

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

If it works like other portrayals of immortality I’m assuming Mimi would just feel constant hunger pains until eventually eating. She wouldn’t die but it’d definitely be unpleasant enough to warrant her being well fed.

20

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 8h ago

My AITAI looks and sounds different...

I think seeing Mimi sad, hurt the most so far ngl... But it was at least followed by a cute scene...

Tbh, I don't get the difference between restoration and healing magic explanation. All I got is that with healing magic, you don't have to make out sloppy style to use it.

Also yeah, like I thought. Very few people can cast the resurrection magic successfully and it sounds like you need to be a powerful healer to cast, so it makes sense that it will be banned... that being said, the fact that Sheena have that type of magic is making me worried....

11

u/Skullzans 7h ago

Far as I can tell:

"Internal" vs "External" refers to problems.

Like, say you have a disease or a brain injury- or you're lacking a hormone(Varying levels of bad depending on which one--). That is Healing Magic's territory.

And say you have lost an arm, have a gash wound. That is Restoration Magic?

That's my guess anyway. The basic idea to re-clarify my guess is: Healing is like purification or cure disease(aka ailment curing) while Restoration is Wounds, Broken and/or Lost Limbs. What's weird is that if I am right, this is seemingly reverse to what most settings define it by?

3

u/i_know_the_void 6h ago

Yep, figured Ari wouldn't go through with that, it would be disrespectful to ignore Seiran's wishes too.

Interesting that they made the distinction between healing and restoration magic. Maybe if Sheena gets good enough at healing magic she can reverse Mimi's immortality, but that would probably cause them to lose the war. The whole thing about healing magic being very rare and passed down through bloodlines is a bit sus too.

Mimi seems to have become even more attached to Sheena now that she's starting to understand what death means for other people.

Flower language: The flower in Mimi and Sheena's room is an Impatiens, which carries the meaning of "impatience" and "maternal love". While the flower that Sheena revives is a Hellebore, which carries the meanings of "hope, resilience and renewal".

4

u/RadianceTower 6h ago

Why would she reverse her immortality? Does Sheena want Mimi to die? Does Mimi want herself to die?

1

u/geldhahn 5h ago

Irrespective of the onging war, not being able to grow old and see any person you hold dear die, is a punishment in itself. Since Mimi "has allowed herself" to feel grief for Seiran after how many years of being numb to the suffering around her, even more so.

2

u/RadianceTower 5h ago

That sounds like coping with death. So? You'd rather die?

She's alive! She can experience so many things cause she's alive. Also get some other people closer to immortal too. Solving aging shouldn't be too much of a jump considering what they have (and the nurse might already have done that).

14

u/Armdel https://myanimelist.net/profile/Armdel 9h ago

yep bringing someone back to life is insane on its own, so bringing someone back and making them immortal ontop of it...

interesting that Mimi's mom used the same powers that Sheena now does. my mind went to reincarnation for a bit there. now i wonder just how far will Sheena be able to take her powers

5

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I’m hoping it’s just a parallel. I have a much higher tolerance for unusual/weird dynamics in romance than many, but even I’d side eye Mimi ending up in a romantic relationship with the reincarnation of her mother.

Mom Instincts for Mimi

Smells like mom

Same type of Magic(Could be why 2nd point is there alone tho)

Drive to be Useful may lead her to "Repeat the Legend" of a Healer who can heal people.

The 2nd lesson on magic is Resurrection Magic, which while it's obviously tied to Mimi as a subtle hint to the class in-world of "Don't even consider this, just in case Mimi tells you", it's also reasonably possible that it's also dual-purposed as Foreshadowing.

I'm not gonna be surprised, but it's very realistically just a parallel rather than literal reincarnation... though again, there's suspicion that can be had.

FREEEEEUUUUUUD KISAMAAAAAA

1

u/Skullzans 3h ago

Snrk, I am not opposed to that yuri, I just await for the end result

3

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I mean, I’m anime only but basic narrative framing makes it highly likely that we’ll eventually see resurrection magic cast at same point in the story. You don’t give something this much weight in a story and never show how it happens. Hell, even if it just ends up being some kind of flashback to Mimi being resurrected that could count as payoff. But yeah personally I still think it’s only a matter of time before it happens again.

2

u/Skullzans 5h ago

You don’t give something this much weight in a story and never show how it happens.

While I agree that it's likely, there is a value to not casting it, it already was cast before. We see Mimi, and the more we learn about it, the more that we know the issues with it- apply all to Mimi.

It's also reasonable that rather than use it again, there's a chance that they treat it like the centrallizing curse to cure. Case in point: Why was the MC's hand glowing when holding Mimi's at the end there? And why is this called "I want to love you til your dying day"? There's a chance that Mimi is the one who will die, and by MC's hand as a "Cure" to the spell, maybe they cure it and now they age normally, basically "unpaused" and thus will eventually die.

It's not like Im saying it Has to be resurrection magic won't be used, though I think you replied to the wrong comment since mine was only addressing the Reincarnation bit. Maybe you meant to reply to /u/Armdel ?

29

u/pepitors 9h ago

I'm confused, isn't Mimi super old? How can Fran have met her mother?

33

u/dinliner08 9h ago

i mean, the only obvious explanation was that Fran is super old too, we still don't know much about magic system of this world so probably there are magic or maybe magic medicine that Fran could use to prolong her life

3

u/eightcheesepizza 3h ago

I keep eyeing that purple covered plant in the middle of Fran's table when I think of our theories about Fran's age.

28

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 9h ago

Mimi does call Fran-sensei really old a few times during the first couple of episodes. I wouldn't be surprised if there's magic in this world that can keep a person young.

17

u/threatdetected23 9h ago

Perhaps she dosent know her like personally, maybe she is just referring to old records left behind of Mimi's mother.

8

u/zazakmazak 5h ago

Well, since resurrection magic is common enough knowledge, it makes sense there would be other immortals out there.

Plus people have been joking Fran's name is a reference to Frankenstein, so there might be more to it lol 😅

4

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 5h ago

super old means what? she could be very old but not that long that mimi's mother and fran would never even met.

9

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 8h ago

I don't think we ever had an ACTUAL confirmation of how old she is, just rumors the student spread. She could have been resurrected 10 years ago.

15

u/runevault 8h ago

I feel like the show has been hinting she's old for a while. Like she's not great at a lot of school but happens to know history really well feels like a tell on how old she is.

11

u/zazakmazak 5h ago

She mentioned one episode she knows this place from before it was called school, I think she is pretty old.

6

u/KJatWork 5h ago

Sure, but that could be 20 or 30 years and Fran may be 40 or 50. To the students, that is old and a long time ago...but it's certainly not 100s of years.

1

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 1h ago

I'd had been wondering about Fran and was wondering if she herself wasn't immortal as well. Mimi and Fran are the only two characters that we see with unnatural hair colors.

I'm wondering if Fran isn't related to Mimi in some way. There is a sadness I'm picking up when she speaks of Mimi's mother I've been picking up.

31

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 9h ago

Hmm, now I’m curious about Fran’s age

22

u/runevault 8h ago

Yeah I caught that too. Was she also resurrected? 'Cause I've been under the impression Mimi is really fucking old but Fran knew her mother who died reviving her.

9

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

Yeah during that scene I was wondering if misunderstood something earlier, I was under the assumption that Mimi had been 'alive' for a few hundred years, so when Fran said that I thought wait, was she just alive for 30-40 years or something?

But yeah it seems there's something special about Fran, as well!

3

u/tev_l 2h ago

Right, didn't Mimi say she was around before the school?

4

u/Paul_Robert_ 3h ago

I'm thinking she's either resurrected, or keeps casting restoration magic on herself, to keep her from ageing?

Her being a resurrected would explain why the executives/leaders put up with her falling asleep in the middle of the meeting 😂 Well, that and the fact that they need her healing skills.

1

u/mmcjawa_reborn 50m ago

I've been wondering if Fran might be capable of body swapping.

Mimi in the early episodes kept calling her "old man" which makes more sense if she WAS originally an old man

I don't think she is at any rate like Mimi and immortal, at least not in the same sense.

41

u/epicfail1994 10h ago

New opening with sad Ari, oh nooo

18

u/WhoiusBarrel 9h ago

They weren't content with hurting via the ED as well now...

18

u/dinliner08 9h ago

anime staff: "hmm? what was that? not enough pain? here some more!"

1

u/Jacob-C 1h ago edited 1h ago

“Ahh, so the tears start at the new OP already. That’s fair”, was basically what I was thinking when the OP started.

22

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 9h ago

And new Ari/Seiran moments too

20

u/dinliner08 9h ago

man, that new visuals was diabolical

14

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 7h ago

Some of these moments where the ones from the pre-animated PV, which is genius use of that footage (as the style being slightly different from the actual show doesn't matter in an op) but also seems directly aimed at further hurting those anime-onlies that thought Seiran would be safe till we get those scenes in the show!!

14

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

That scene of Seiran and Ari holding hands on the bed. The bastards used it for the OP.

8

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 7h ago

Nobody tell abyss, I have been trying to get him to catch up via these scenes as bait for weeks

7

u/CitronClassic672 6h ago

That scene was a main reason I decided to watch the show. How do you think I feel, lol.

7

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 6h ago

Lol you don't know how hilarious it was to see seiranari only being introduced via gex.

5

u/CitronClassic672 6h ago

I am curious about the “sexual content” content disclaimer for the series now though if that was as risqué as it ends up being. Is it 16+ only for the gore and death and they just tacked the sexual content disclaimer onto it?

5

u/gnome-cop 4h ago

Imma be honest, I saw that scene way back when they released the first PV and just instantly knew “Oh, those bastards, this scene is gonna hurt so much when one or both of them die horribly later.” It’s pretty much THE reason I’ve been holding off on the series until now because I’m only going to go through the pain once.

11

u/Roskal 9h ago

They really twist the knife by giving so many new Seiran/Ari moments in those unique EDs and this new OP.

5

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I’m so torn, I’m happy that we didn’t completely lose Seiran as a character via the continued presence in the OP, ED and in episode flashbacks/dreams, but at the same time it asot makes it more painful for her to continue to be around only in this manner.

7

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 6h ago

She also is in the eyecatches, despite me being so sure we would get updated ones without her at this point.

7

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 6h ago

They just uploaded the new op!

10

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 8h ago

Man, there immortal weapon not gonna be much of a weapon anymore, Mimi is changing drastically. Im glad Ari and Seiren talked out already about resurrecting and immortality and already said what they would do.

Healing being so rare is wild. I just took it for granted because of what Mimi did to Sheena's arm way back when.

7

u/mokuhazushi 8h ago

There are basically two types of "healing magic" in this world. The first one is called "restoration" (修復魔法) and is about closing wounds and, in extreme cases, growing limbs. It seems like a lot of people can use this. The other one is called "healing" or "rejuvenation" (治癒魔法), and it's the kind Sheena can use. It's very rare, and mostly for removing pain and discomfort, but in extreme cases, it can also heal illnesses (and resurrect people?)

6

u/runevault 8h ago

They're two different types of magic. What Mimi did is restoration magic, while what Sheena is doing is healing. Fran talked about it a bit after she realized Sheena could do it.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

Man, there immortal weapon not gonna be much of a weapon anymore, Mimi is changing drastically

Yeah, and I was talking/theorizing about this even as early as episode 1 IIRC, about how they had to KNOW she would change, if they let her with the other girls...

So they have to think whatever will happen from this, is worth losing their ultimate weapon.

10

u/MIpoika https://myanimelist.net/profile/MIpoika 8h ago

Surprised with the new rendition of Amore for OP (pretty sure it's the Bridge + final chorus) and the new visuals.

Ari's decision to turn down Mimi's offer must be painful, but is (objectively) the correct one and I respect that wholeheartedly, as much as I myself wanted to see Seiran back and them happy together.
Not to mention, if Seiran did came back as immortal, she would be left alone too in the end, when Ari would eventually and inevitably die herself. It'd be just cruel to have to see all loved ones die before one's very eyes.

Something tells me that Sheena's latent talent at using healing magic will play some part in something at some point. And I wonder if she'll become strong enough at some point and eventually assume the role of a healer or something alike on the battlefield...

3

u/geldhahn 8h ago

That last scene, where Sheena heals Mimi is really something. Was it just a regular occurence and it's the first time we see it happen? Or did she heal something "specific". Also it would be interesting if Sheena could make Mimi mortal again down the line. So many questions. Awesome episode!

13

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 7h ago

If I am not mistaken, it also happened in a previous episode when Sheena hugged her.

5

u/mokuhazushi 7h ago

Mimi's magic: Super strong, super fast, immortal

Sheena's magic: Sparkly hugs that feels really good

2

u/MIpoika https://myanimelist.net/profile/MIpoika 7h ago

Also it would be interesting if Sheena could make Mimi mortal again down the line

This, alongside its possible implications did cross my mind briefly, but I'm not sure if I want to believe this early, before we see Sheena's abilities develop further. Nevertheless, I'm really eager to see what direction the story decides to take with Sheena's abilities.

31

u/deathpad17 9h ago

The new OP sure hits hard

14

u/dinliner08 9h ago

it hits hard where it hurts

3

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 9h ago

Same song, just A Capella

11

u/lordposedyon https://myanimelist.net/profile/lordposedyon 8h ago

same song, new OP

6

u/zazakmazak 5h ago

same song, second chorus.

I'm kinda surprised this is the first instance I've seen someone do this, after watching so much other anime.

1

u/BosuW 4h ago

I'm pretty sure I've seen it done before, but I can't name where right now.

1

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 1h ago

Frieren S1 ED did it across the two cours, using the first and second half of Milets Anytime, Anywhere

1

u/Jacob-C 1h ago

It hit even harder when someone in the comments for the new OP pointed out that this entire second chorus is in the past tense, and at 0:44 she sings, “I loved you so much”.

9

u/Myrkrvaldyr 9h ago

We learned something important, healing magic is too rare and only Mimi's mother was powerful enough to heal people. That got me thinking that the death toll must be absolutely horrible. The story seems to be setting up Sheena as eventually becoming powerful enough to heal people like Mimi's mom did, which would eventually mean she'll go to the battlefield, where she could die.

5

u/CitronClassic672 6h ago

I assume they’d be smart enough to keep Sheena secure in the back during battle if she was eventually sent out. It’d probably be strategically better to keep her at the school, but if Sheena was close by she could likely prevent more deaths like Seiran’s which assume would influence her.

3

u/Alej_11 8h ago

And Mimi would use the resurrection magic and lose her immortality...

1

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3h ago

Hey that isn't clear, she could also be lucky and just lose all her life energy and magic, becoming a lifeless husk that is unable to move and which is forever kept alive!

1

u/Alej_11 3h ago

Eh better than living forever anyway, being alive and conscious while the universe is imploding on itself must be really tragic

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

We learned something important, healing magic is too rare and only Mimi's mother was powerful enough to heal people. That got me thinking that the death toll must be absolutely horrible.

Makes me wonder whether THIS is why they made it 'taboo';

Not out of ethical reasons, but simply because "we're losing too many soldiers this way, just to try and bring back 1 other soldier"

7

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 7h ago

I am happy this episode wasn't as gut wrenching sad as the previous couple.

It's really something to see the usual ball of energy and cheer that is Mimi experience losing a friend for what may be the first time in her life. Given she doesn't have much of a filter, it was not surprising that she nearly spilled the beans about her own immortality.

I do understand why Sheena went to go see Fran, but I really didn't care for her leaving Mimi alone. She just experienced a terrible loss. Waking up to find Sheena missing had to hurt like hell.

Also, the animation and animation effects in this show are just spectacular.

Yeah, I was also happy to get some more lighthearted/hopeful moments this episode after the dread and pain of the last 3. And I think the characters really needed it too.

Mimi has gone from our wholesome puppygirl to a kicked puppygirl this episode and it hurts.

Sheena is dealing with the grief of losing Seiran in her own way and even she regretting leaving Mimi in the night, but she did think she was sleeping and immediately apologized to Mimi after realizing how bad it was for her so I’m fine with it.

A new OP with a more sombre start to the music and Ari's depressed look. Why have you got to hurt me like this?

I was surprised at Ari & Seiran's maturity. I expected this entire episode to revolve around Ari fighting the temptation to revive Seiran before ultimately accepting her death. However, she had already done so from the very start. Their discussion about the resurrection spell was casually sparked by the revelation about Mimi but they took it seriously. That was a great line by Ari about Seiran's life and soul belonging to her alone. Nobody has the right to tamper with that, not even Ari herself. It's a level of maturity not expected from 14-year-olds.

Sheena having a similar magic to Mimi's mum, while it's noted that attributes tend to be passed through bloodlines. Could Mimi & Sheena be distant relatives? She knew full well about her lack of combat ability, but she's got a talent in healing. If she were to be sent to the frontlines in the future, she could serve as a medic. Perhaps there would be far less casualties. A death like Seiran's would be avoidable.

oops accidental incest

3

u/Skullzans 7h ago

I feel they have a more Adoptive Mother/Daughter relationship than Girlfriends relationship. I say More than, since... y'know, technically it's possibly the "Mom Friend" archetype applied to relationships. (Only reason I used that is because the only terms I know apply to sexual and to friend archetypes of relationships, and I feel the latter is closer than the former.)

7

u/Mindless_Being_22 7h ago

We're really family zoning the main yuri couple in a series that comes from a yuri magazine.

I agree with I would like the yuri to just be yuri but like thisisdropd mentioned it was weird they noted that healing magic traits get passed down in bloodlines during the same scene. knowing this show it could be something or could just be them trying to get more into the worldbuilding

Also u/thisisdropd I really want this story to go into like power drive where Sheena becomes this insanely powerful healer and her and Mimi just rip it apart in battle together kicking ass and saving lives. gahh im never going to get over episode 8 though jesus.

I agree with I would like the yuri to just be yuri but like thisisdropd mentioned it was weird they noted that healing magic traits get passed down in bloodlines during the same scene.

It isn't weird at all, the entire discussion they have is about why mimi is all about sheena, which is why fran says that since mimi is her mothers daughter, the moms affinity towards healing magic was passed down to mimi, which is why she is so compatible with another healing magic user (sheena)

The sombre and slightly a Capella OP fits the series really well. I wonder if Sheena is going to somehow heal Mimi's resurrection magic and let her become mortal again. Either way it will be nice seeing Sheena be more confident and capable with her magic.

What's up with Fran? Mimi is supposed to be words old, how does she know Mimi's mother? I suspect she's either had the resurrection spell cast on herself as well, or she's also somehow Mimi's mother.

6

u/Alej_11 8h ago

Great episode as always, I started the anime because of the Yuri, I'm here because of the tragic plot.

I would have never excepted ari to refuse the immortality spell, she's incredibly vulnerable rn, of she never had the convo with seiran she would had chosen to revive her 100%.

I really liked how deeply the death of seiran impacted Mimi, seiran wasn't that interesting of a character, but we can't say that her death wasn't impactful.

How old is the doctor? She personally knew Mimi's mom, and we know that Mimi lived in the school since before it was even a school, so it's been decades at the very least. Is this a plot hole?

So Sheena and Mimi have such a bond because Mimi feels her mom presence, how cute. The scene when Mimi hugged Sheena saying that she didn't want to be left behind was the pinnacle of the episode.

We discovered that not anyone can use the resurrection spell, you need to have incredibly high reserves and be very good with healing magic. That explains why we don't see an army of undeads. Also the healing magic is an hereditary trait? Who were Sheena's parents? They must have been healers, it's an incredible rare trait, there is no way that the government didn't at least try to have them as suports

2

u/mokuhazushi 4h ago

Also the healing magic is an hereditary trait?

No, the translation for that sentence was off. Fran was saying Mimi was extra susceptible to Sheena's healing magic because a family member of hers (her mom) had the same type of magic. She didn't say anything about magic being hereditary.

1

u/Alej_11 4h ago

Well it makes sense, or else we would have families/clans of healers and they wouldn't be half as rare (they would still be rare because I wouldn't expect them to have an healer for every generation, but if the genes don't get diluted too much the chances are higher)

4

u/kicksFR 7h ago

Ari seems to have rejected the plan too easily. I expect this plot point to come back later.

11

u/ash-7831 7h ago

We can all agree that Sheena is not built for the battlefield. Her talents lie elsewhere.

4

u/CitronClassic672 6h ago

I half joked last episode how messed up it was that the school doesn’t even bother having a grief counselor for those close to the deceased, but it looks like Sheena might eventually be the one to fill that role given the mention about how healing magic restores a person from the inside and “heals their spirit”.

4

u/ash-7831 6h ago

Their answer to grief is to avoid it altogether.

20

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 9h ago

I’m impressed Ari turned down Mimi’s request. She’s hurting a lot and it’s a tempting offer but her answer was very sensible. It’s also interesting to see that Mimi is starting to understand and experience loss on an emotional level. Sheena’s a good influence on her. I look forward to seeing how else Sheena can help Mimi since her magic is seemingly compatible with hers.

20

u/dinliner08 9h ago

I’m impressed Ari turned down Mimi’s request. She’s hurting a lot and it’s a tempting offer but her answer was very sensible

to be fair, we were shown multiple times that Ari is the most sensible one among those four so i'm not even surprised

9

u/Myrkrvaldyr 9h ago

She makes me wonder if she's even suited for battle. She's a very cool-headed girl, suitable for high pressure environments, but it just feels so wrong to see someone like that killing, yet, she could be a terrifying commander eventually.

11

u/joseto1945 7h ago

How many times can the same song make you cry?

Reona: yes

Seriously, I've been hearing Amore like crazy, so when I realized they were playing the final part of the song I just bawled.

7

u/Mindless_Being_22 6h ago

You can really tell how much passion reona has for this song doing something like for a series you love has gotta be amazing.

4

u/CitronClassic672 6h ago

From a purely lyrical standpoint, Amore genuinely might be the best OP of the season for me. Something about the rhythm, sound, and delivery just resonates with me deeply.

7

u/JJVM99 8h ago

Based on the massive sample size of two we can conclude as the story implied that the way to use healing magic is to become Mimi’s mama.

When she started healing all the plants I was expecting the story to reveal she was actually a prodigy at healing magic and that she would be sent to the battlefield to backlines of the battlefield to heal anyone who got hurt but they took a more realistic and better choice of just showing that she finally found confidence and a talent for something and needs to take her time developing it. Also at the same time was thinking it would have been nice to have head healing magic for Seiran :( (I expect to be feeling this way about a lot of things going forward).

2

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 5h ago edited 4h ago

not mimi's mother. Just that she shared her power. That's it. it doesn't mean she is mimi's "mother."

2

u/JJVM99 5h ago

i know i’m just joking she has that power because she has been taking care of Mimi like a mother

1

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 5h ago

yeah agreed.

10

u/runevault 7h ago

New rendition of the OP hit hard, plus the new visuals. Keep stabbing us with reminders of how sweet Seiran was, we won't mind.

And we got the answer about Sheena's smell. She smells like Mimi's dead mother. And Fran recognized it when she smelled Sheena back in episode 1 or 2, so she really has met Mimi's mother. Does that mean we're wrong about Mimi's age or is Fran also a resurrected person, or does magic generally let you live a long time if you aren't killed? I doubt we're that wrong about Mimi's age else why would she struggle with a lot of school but be good at history?

5

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I’ve never seen an anime make a change like that with the OP before. They changed the visuals and kept the same song but it seems like they used the second verse of it or something? Can anyone else provide another example of an anime doing that?

Yeah I assume we’re right about Mimi’s long lifespan so it’s more likely Fran is also significantly longer lived than she seems.

4

u/Boshwa 6h ago

I think the ending song for season 1 of Frieren did that

5

u/Magic1998 https://anilist.co/user/Moerril 6h ago

I have watched a few anime who did this, but from my memory only Hunter x Hunter comes to my mind. They alternated between the first and second verse each arc more or less

3

u/runevault 7h ago

The OP sounded acapela or the like, the same song but a different performance style. And it was different from the get go, I picked up on the music change before I realized the visuals had also been swapped out. I hope they release this version of the OP too as even though I like the original something about this one is more my style.

Edit: Oh seeing another person comment on it I misunderstood what you meant, you were talking about the part of the song not in the OP prior. My bad.

u/i_know_the_void 6h ago edited 5h ago

Vindication! Sheena is going to be learning from Nurse Fran

10

u/evanieCK https://myanimelist.net/profile/emilyck 7h ago

The turnaround this show has managed from a technical standpoint feels insane to me. Episodes 3-6 felt like a series holding on by a thread, cutting corners at every possible opportunity, but 7-9 have been by far the best of the series. Did they just decide to lock in? I remember hearing some rumors about a director change halfway through, was this the payoff of that?

8

u/daiselol 7h ago

To be fair, these were always going to be high priority episodes

8

u/kicksFR 7h ago

The opening changed this week, not only on the visuals but the song is now the second half of the Amore full version.

7

u/marshmallow_sunshine 6h ago edited 1h ago

For those who don't know the lyrics, there's a subtitled version of the song here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isO78KhdY78

The lyrics in the mid/second half are devastating 😭

3

u/kicksFR 6h ago

It’s such a beautiful song. I love that the lyrics are simpleish and slow so even I can understand them with my bad nihongo.

4

u/Over-Doughnut2020 6h ago

I love it. Hehehehehe except the part where sheena seems gonna be thrown away. Lololololol. Thats funny

10

u/iTableProduct 7h ago

Ohh, that's explain why resurrection magic very rare, it's actually difficult to do and you will likely die for nothing.

previously i thought there is no way the only reason nobody doing resurrection magic is because it's forbidden. You die anyway, so doesn't matter if it's forbidden. There should be countless times where people want to sacrifice their life to resurrect other people.

4

u/Neidhardto 5h ago

Not afraid to admit the new opening made me cry. 😭 Using the new footage plus the last part of the full song was genius.

8

u/TheBowmanGamer 8h ago

What the frick? Where did this absolutely gorgeous alternate OP come from? And why did it make me sob uncontrollably?? Goodness they are putting a lot of effort into this anime and I am here for it.

As a Manga reader, I was very happy to see how much the loss of Seiran effected Mimi. She never understood the concept of loss, because she never had anything to lose. Her breakdown was, while heartbreaking, genuinely such a beautiful moment.

Sheena really doesn't belong in this world, but I love that when she learns that she might have the ability to help heal people, it doesn't take her but a few minutes to resolve herself that she's going to improve so that she can help others. And the way that Fran silently pushes her but lets Sheena reach her own conclusion... my goodness the characters in this are just so great. Bur Ari 😭 sweet Ari...

4

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

My recent experience with yuri anime has been that despite consistently having less of a production budget than comparable shows no matter how good the material, the production teams have continuously shown how much love and passion they have for the material and I couldn’t be happier about that.

3

u/BosuW 3h ago

Unless your name is SasaKoi 😭

3

u/DugACCat 5h ago

I often routinely skip OP and so sometimes don’t realize when they’re new, but for whatever reason let this play and it really got to me too. Makes sense with the specific scenes shown it’s new but it was filled with so many great affectionate moments. Delicately extra impactful now but would have been appealing regardless.

5

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I happy to get a bit more lighthearted episode after the emotionally exhausting dread/pain from the last three. Even if the characters are still coping with Seiran’s death.

6

u/joseto1945 7h ago

So, what I got is that Fran sensei knew Mimi's mother directly? Wouldn't that make her really old then?

Sheena, I get that you want to be useful, but please don't rush it. I wouldn't be able to handle if you were called to battle, and probably neither would Mimi.

Seriously, everyone in this series has a giant death flag looming over them. I hadn't felt this way since SukaSuka, back in 2017...

...2017? Jesus, I'm old

3

u/Sleepy10105s 5h ago

I’m just happy something positive came out of Seiran and Ari’s background investigation into resurrection magic

3

u/ash-7831 7h ago

"Even if not on the battlefield."

Fran never considered that as an option. There's definitely something Sheena can do to help from inside the school. Now that Mimi has lost something close to her, she's scared of losing Sheena. Now she has a reason to be afraid. I'm both intrigued and worried about how things will change for Mimi from here on.

4

u/CitronClassic672 7h ago

I both loved and hated how Mimi’s grief from losing Seiran has seemingly caused her to develop separation anxiety. I love it from a writing standpoint, but god it hurts to see.

5

u/AdStellasNovas2234 7h ago

The OP change caught me off guard, and there were some great Seiran x Ali scenes!

Mimi has definitely grown more attached to Sheena after witnessing Seiran’s loss. We also finally learn the true nature of Sheena's magic, and discover that Mimi's mom possessed the exact same power!

4

u/ash-7831 7h ago

Does Sheena's magic help Mimi feel more at ease?

2

u/zazakmazak 5h ago

Amazing use of second chorus in the new OP, but why did it have to be more Seiran scenes??? 😭😭😭

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

In this episode of Sheena in a war-torn world with her level 0 fighting ability, started a career as a potion crafter!

So we picked up right where we left off, with the offer of a resurrection spell...

So basically, if we use that spell, we'll make her a warmongering abomination, like me!

Still, props on her for NOT doing it;

Many people have good principles in a vacuum, but when the opportunity presents itself, they're often more flexible!

About the resurrection, I have to say: I used to think of the spell as a Chekhov resurrection spell, meaning, they brought it up, they WILL use it...

But then I thought, if they bring back Seiran it might cheapen the 2 previous episodes;

So perhaps the Chekhov Spell will fire, but for Sheena, some point down the line?

Ari had strong opinions about why it should not be used (and not for the 'taboo/restriction'), but Mimi might not feel the same about it. Especially if someone she loves is concerned!

I think the more important question is "How will it affect her";

Thing is, given her situation she can't really go "This is horrible, I won't fight anymore" because Mimi not fighting would mean MORE of the other girls will die.

So will she go even crazier, try to be even more efficient so the others don't even face any opponents?

Could be risky, even if she can't be killed (directly)

At first I thought they messed up and got them wrong, but no, of course they're eating the one the other girl made!

Left unsaid: "Because someday I won't be there anymore to make them for you"?

Is Yurification a spell?

2

u/gnome-cop 4h ago

Alright, fuck this, give me the coordinates of the one who decided to change the opening animation, I’ll fight them myself for this.

I hate to say this, I don’t want Seiran dead but they made the right decision. Using the reincarnation spell and subjecting her to the same fate as Mimi would be far too cruel. It’s better to let her stay dead, no matter how much it hurts that she’s gone.

It makes sense that Mimi who hasn’t really known much outside of being immortal has a different perspective on the issue compared to Sheena and Ari. She doesn’t see the same drawbacks they do because she doesn’t know anything other than her state of being. She just knows that Seiran is gone, that it hurts and wouldn’t it be better if she’s back?

I liked Fran’s interactions with Sheena this episode.

I’m not sure what I think about Sheena’s newfound resolve but like it or not, she really doesn’t have a choice, does she? It’s, sadly, better to be prepared before anything happens rather than to regret it after, even if that means getting deeper into the mindset that the meatgrinder takes advantage of.

3

u/DemonWraith2500 5h ago

Subaru, please explain to Mimi why can't die isn't a good thing.

2

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 5h ago

Ok, crackpot theory: Eventually Sheena's healing magic will be strong enough to remove the immortal aspect from Mimi's resurrection, allowing her to live normally.

Conversely, that might mean she ends up dying during a battle and suddenly not come back to life.

2

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 5h ago

I was really hoping they resurrect Seiran 🥺

Also that new OP omg😭

1

u/Tanyan-nightchord 5h ago

The show really felt like it took its time with this episode, but I feel like that might change in the near future. Nurse hag telling Sheena she is still only in class 14 (while two of her classmates died in the battlefield recently too btw) doesn't sit right with me. "You just have to take it slowly" kind of screams we won't take it slowly. Also, I need more of Ari's perspective on things. Seiran might be gone, but she is still here and a very real person of her own.

1

u/FinancialYear475 3h ago

With all that Mimi said about remembering things before it was even a school I was thinking she was kinda ancient, being immortal for a good couple hundred years already, but Fran knew her mom so now I'm confused, is she also immortal? Are some people in this world just able to live that long naturally when you aren't going to the front lines? Maybe a few decades actually feel like a lot more due to the war and the school being created and stablished in a few years just makes it look like a huge time passed, idk but it got me curious

1

u/Peon01 3h ago

SURELY this link between sheena and mimis mother means we won't have the same thing happen to sheena too RIGHT

1

u/ak_them 2h ago

do i smell a happy ending?

1

u/Raymond49090 1h ago

The closer Mimi gets to becoming a normal human, the more the weight of immortality becomes.

1

u/Rooby_VTuber 1h ago

It was probably a good idea the Ari & Seiran already talked about not using resurrection maigc.

Poor Mimi can't understand because she is a child forever that is unable to mature into an adult.

Sheena has useful healing magic, I liked the time she spent with Fran, a lot of great advice was given.

1

u/ash-7831 1h ago

I was wondering. Mimi's mother was sacrificed so Mimi can be revived. But does Mimi know that?

1

u/dinmammapizza 7m ago

Something about the war is very sus, why are they wasting talent sending out the skilled younger students to almost certain death before they are fully trained if they get deployed at 17 anyways.

0

u/Lunchb0xx87 2h ago

so is Sheena  related to mimis mother in someway ? the whole bloodline thing with her magic hints at something..shes not like a reincarnation is she ?

-11

u/RadianceTower 6h ago edited 6h ago

They went the cliche route of "nooo, dead should stay dead". Could have been interesting if they tried to resurrect her, researching the spell (you should gather info for how stuff works first and get a good understanding) and find ways to do it without one of them being sacrificed, instead of being "nope", even if it was set as an goal they might not immediately be able to achieve (cause as said you might need to be pretty strong to do it).

Also it's still ehh, they still seem loyal to the school, who even cares about that school? They should revolt. Have Mimi attack all those higher-ups sending kids to battle instead of sending her to go to war with who knows what enemy.

Also that nurse is immortal too? Considering she seems to have been alive for a while and can use restoration magic like Mimi.

Though if they have that sort of magic stuff, I guess fixing aging shouldn't be an issue either way?

6

u/ash-7831 6h ago edited 6h ago

Do you just miss Seiran?

They revolt, and then what? They're all orphans who don't have a home. No education, no money, no food, etc. They'll just be living on the streets. Like Seiran used to before the school took her in.

1

u/Tanyan-nightchord 5h ago

I love how you say that with such confidence, as if we know anything about the enemy's objectives lol

1

u/BosuW 3h ago

Precisely because of this, it's actually the prudent option to keep the school around because nothing says their country won't still be at war if there was no magic institute.

At the very least, clearly the enemy isn't trying to liberate these poor children.

0

u/RadianceTower 5h ago

Living on the streets is better than being butchered in the war.

Also they have magic, these aren't normal helpless kids, they can manage to setup a community on their own.

There are so many options.

2

u/ash-7831 4h ago

How would they solve the food and shelter problem for the nmber of kids that are there?

1

u/RadianceTower 4h ago

They are literally OP with magic, they can even take down big animals with it if it comes down to it for food.

As with how this series is with its so far weak world building, we really know little of how their world works. So it's hard to give details.

Maybe they can take over the school, and hold it, then negotiate with the enemy?

Maybe their best option is to flee to another city or country? Setup camp somewhere?

As it is though, they are quite literally being sent to be butchered in the war.

1

u/ash-7831 4h ago

That's assuming nothing bad will happen to them after they leave. Even with magic, they're still children with not enough experience being out there. Not to mention, their magic proficiency is intermediate level at best.

1

u/RadianceTower 4h ago

Well, they are being sent to be butchered right now...

1

u/ash-7831 3h ago

Technically, they're being sent to fight. Their death is not guaranteed. It's possible, but not certain. There's a reason they don't send the younger students out there.

1

u/ash-7831 5h ago

What can they do with what's available to them? They aren't magical geniuses. They're still beginners. Aside from Mimi, they're not sent to war because they're good, they're sent because there's no better alternative.

1

u/BosuW 3h ago

Living on the streets is better than being butchered in the war.

That's something for them to decide. Seiran said no, it ain't better. She lived like a starved animal.

Also they have magic, these aren't normal helpless kids

Why you're acting like they're somehow overpowered because of this? It's only the higher years and some prodigies that are better than average. It's not nearly enough to coast on life on it. Plus, to set up a community, it takes more than extreme firepower. It's the teachers who know how to organize that, not the students.

2

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 6h ago

where does you people learn that mimi is somehow millenia old? it could be that she was resurrected a long time ago but not very long time. Also them being loyal to school when school is the only home they know is pretty realistic. Also if they don't fight the war. Enemies will kill them anmyway. War is always cruel from both sides.

1

u/RadianceTower 4h ago

We don't have confirmation of her exact age, but there are indications that she could be quite older than just a decade or two:

Mimi is said to be really good at history, as if she was alive through it all, and I assume their history goes back at least a couple hundred years.

Mimi says she has been here before that place was even a school, when it was called the archive, to which Sheena (who should presumably be somewhat familiar with the school and its timeline), says that it must've been super long ago.

Of course, like I said, we don't have exact confirmation, so she could also be like 20-40 or something.

Edit: As for the fighting in war, they are OP kids with magic, they can literally go somewhere else, outside of that war zone or even country. That isn't the only place they can be. They have far better odds of survival than directly going to the front line that way.

2

u/ash-7831 4h ago

OP? They're barely intermediate level at best.

1

u/RadianceTower 4h ago

They are OP compared to what your average magicless orphan can do, and what even magicless adults can do, in the wild.

Having those abilities expands their options so much more, when it comes to surviving and providing for themselves.

2

u/ash-7831 4h ago

Seiran tried that life. Didn't take.

1

u/RadianceTower 4h ago

She was much younger, presumably incapable of using magic, and having no one else.

You are comparing weird situations here.

You'd rather they stay there obedient, bark for them and go get butchered?

1

u/ash-7831 4h ago

You'd rather they stay there obedient, bark for them

When you say it like that, it makes me wonder if that's what this is really about.

Seiran cared, which is why she volunteered to go out there. Naive as it may have been.

1

u/ash-7831 1h ago

They went the cliche route of "nooo, dead should stay dead"

They didn't refuse because they thought it was wrong, they refused because they knew Seiran wouldn't be happy about it. 1, another person would have to be sacrificed, 2, she would eventually outlive Ari and then some.
