Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Anywhere near CCSF (Ocean Campus) where you can get a meal + drink for less than $10?

Some days I forget to bring lunch and McDonalds seems to be the only place where you can get a good amount of food and a drink for less than $10.

Hyatt Place on 3rd & Townsend

UPDATE - I went to the hotel and shared a medical letter stating travel is not ok and they will allow the reservation to be cancelled.

Has anyone successfully gotten the Hyatt Place on 3rd & Townsend to cancel a reservation made through Expedia? If so, how?

My 80 y.o. parents booked through Expedia for a trip that was supposed to start 9/5 but due to medical incidents, they can no longer travel. The hotel is not open to considering a goodwill exception to the cancellation policy or even move the dates of the reservation.

This is a nearly $3K loss nightmare so seeking advice.

Window Washing Recs?

Hi neighbors - does anyone have an exterior window washing company they recommend that will do a three story Edwardian? Bonus if they will also clean the gutters... I have contacted a few that have been recommended in this sub but they initially reply and then never follow up with an estimate :-( Thank you!

4.25 Day Road Trip from Portland OR to San Fran: Questions

Upvotes

Hi! Planning a long weekend road trip driving down the coast from Portland to San Francisco in the fall, and getting slightly worried about the length of the trip...

The plan is to fly into Portland Friday night, rent a car, and immediately drive to Eugene (2ish hours of total drive time). Saturday, we meander down the Oregon Coast and stay a night in Brookings, OR (4.5 hrs total). Sunday, we continue down the coast to Eureka, CA (4 hrs total). Monday, we drive through Humboldt County and spend the night either in Fort Bragg, Mendocino, or a near by town (4 hrs total). Then Tuesday we wake up earlyyy and try to have a fullish day exploring San Francisco before our red eye flight home.

A few questions since I'm from the East Coast:

  1. Is this a realistic itinerary/drive for such a short amount of time? We are okay with spending time in the car especially if the view is gorgeous, and we have many stops along our route so we will never be driving for too long besides our drive from Mendocino area to San Francisco. However, I'm not sure if my time estimates are accurate, especially driving along the coast. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
  2. Is there any leg/of this trip where you believe it would be better to take a faster, inland highway instead of the coast in order to make up time? I'm sure the entire coastline is beautiful but willing to give up some views if it buys us more time to sightsee/explore. For example, should we take highway 101 from Mendocino area to San Francisco instead of the PCH in order to have a longer day in the city?
  3. Any must sees along the route/recommendations on where to stay for our last night? Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Elk etc. Trying to maximize time in San Fran the next day so the closer the better.
  4. Lastly, I've only been to San Francisco once and my boyfriend has never been. What are must do's/see's for 8 hours in San Francisco??

Thanks!!!!!

SFMOMA parking for non-visitors

Upvotes

Does anyone know if the parking garage at SFMOMA is limited to guests or is public, as long as you pay the fee?

I normally commute via BART into SF for work but for a few says it’d be good to drive in, and since I’m a SFMOMA member i might as well take advantage of the 25% parking discount.

Ideally I’d drive in at 8am, park, go to work, retrieve it at 6pm or something

Decently priced move-out cleaning service

Hello,

I am looking to hire a cleaning service to do a move out clean on my condo. It is a 1 bed 2 bath loft.

In the past when I needed cleaning services I called la colectiva, but it seems they aren't picking up and the move out is a bit time sensitive.

Would like to get someone scheduled for Thursday if possible.

I checked berry clean, but they want $600 for the service which seems a bit high.

Any advice on some more reasonable cleaners who offer this service?

Visiting SF

Hi all!

My husband and I are visiting from Maryland 18 & 19 Sep before we board a cruise ship on the 20th. We arrive at SFO on the 18th at 11am and here is our current plan but I would love feedback so we can enjoy our short time in SF (if we like it enough and have too much of a "want to do" list then we are more than happy to come back :)

18 Sep:

1100: Land at SFO, take rideshare to Hotel Caza to drop off our bags, then go to Fisherman's Wharf for lunch (Open to suggestions on location, just looking for something close by to the hotel for this particular meal) then wander around Fisherman's Wharf (possibly a nap if time allows)

1700: In n Out for a quick dinner

1820: Be at Pier 33 for Alcatraz Night Tour. Once tour is over, most likely going back to the hotel for the night

19 Sep (This is where I am very open to suggestions):

0900: Step off the bus and walk down to the shoreline paths of Crissy Field for crisp morning views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

1015: Palace of Fine Arts - Walk 10 minutes east along the waterfront into the Marina district to reach the majestic Greco-Roman rotunda and lagoon.

1130: Lombard Street - From North Point & Hyde, walk south 3 blocks up to the top of the famous, winding brick switchbacks.

1300: Chinatown - Dim sum for lunch and Golden Gate Bakery for a sweet treat

1500: Ferry Building Marketplace - Explore the bustling gourmet food stalls and artisan shops inside this historic transit hub right on the Embarcadero.

1630: Coit Tower & North Beach - Walk west to the Filbert Street Steps and climb through the hidden hillside gardens up to Coit Tower for a 360-degree sunset view of the bay. Walk back down the west side into North Beach (Little Italy) for dinner.

1900: Pier 39 & Sea Lions - Walk north on Columbus Ave or take the Muni 30 Bus northbound to Beach Street to see the sea lions at Pier 39 before they quiet down for the night. Then walk back to the hotel for the night.

Again, any recommendations are appreciated. A lot of the stuff on the itinerary was recommended by AI admittedly and I very much want to fact check it so we have the best time. Thank you in advance!

Dance Space Rentals?

I’m looking for cheap dance studio rentals here in the city for weekly solo dance practices. Open to private spaces for rent as well. I have my own speaker, just as long as theres an open floor to dance on.

Will acupuncture help chronic migraine? any good acupuncturist in Bay Area?

My bad migraine always hit during stressful time and lately I've been quite stressful, had terrible migraine last week where I had to stay in bed for 3 days and couldn't do much. My friend told me to try acupuncture to help, does anyone here has had good results from acupuncture? will the result be long-term or is it the type of treatment I should do once in a month regularly to keep the pain away? please also recommend a good one around the area.

Good seafood in the bay area?

Recently moved here. I’m looking less for the usual salmon/tuna and more for Japanese fish like seasonal whole fish, good uni, hotate, etc.

Happy to pay a premium for genuinely better quality/freshness. I’d especially love somewhere that gets seafood directly from Japan.

UCSF Hiring Process

Just wondering for any nurses or other staff who applied to work at UCSF, how long did it take you to hear back after submitting your application? And did they reach out through phone or email to you? I work nights now and tend to miss calls during business hours so I want to be prepared. Thanks
