My routine!!

Wash: I use SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo, followed by the matching Curl & Shine Conditioner. I focus shampoo on my scalp and work conditioner through the lengths, detangling with my fingers/wide-tooth comb.

Styling: On soaking-wet hair, I apply Kinky-Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner, then Kinky-Curly Curling Custard through sections, scrunching upwards to encourage my curls.

Drying: I gently scrunch with a microfibre towel/T-shirt, then diffuse on a low heat/low-speed setting until completely dry.

Maintenance: I sleep with my curls in a loose pineapple underneath a satin bonnet and refresh in the morning with a little water and leave-in conditioner. I avoid brushing the curls when they’re dry to prevent frizz.

Got a haircut with layers for the first time ever, and I love how it turned out! I also started air drying over blowdrying which helps with frizz. Mostly just wanted to share how good it looked today lol.

Routine:
Shampoo is Tresemme and Conditioner is Dove damage therapy
Spray wet, Patene hydrating butter creme + Lotta body foaming mousse combed through, air dry. For my bangs I finger twirl each one. Once it's dry I flip it a couple times for volume.

Hair Victory! No product - just brush styling and diffusing. Who would have thought.

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I saw a reel of a girl using zero products on her hair after washing, just brush styling with her bounce curl brush and diffusing as normal, and her hair turned out incredible. I had to see for myself.

To preface, I ALWAYS put something in my hair, even if it’s my leave in once I step out of the shower. I’ve been struggling with volume and feeling like my hair is too weighed down and heavy, no matter what I try. I kind of couldn’t believe how deeply uncomfortable it felt to skip all those steps that I’ve been doing religiously for probably over a decade at this point.

Routine:
1. Wash and condition with Aussie miracle curl, wash out completely
2. Lightly scrunch with dry tshirt, then section and style with bounce curl brush with special attention to the crown to brush backwards for volume
3. plop in T-shirt for maybe 10 mins
4. Diffuse as usual

Will it hold nearly as long as it does with gel and mousse? Probably not. But in a world where everything is 3x the price it was 5 years ago and everywhere I turn is an advertisement that I need to BUY MORE to feel more beautiful - this feels like a small win.

As per usual, less is usually more.

Help! Dry brushing

Hi everyone, I've known for a while that you shouldn't dry brush curly hair, but I can't leave my hair unbrushed unless I want it to look like a rat's nest by the end of the day. So, how are you managing your hair? :')

I have fine 2C hair, but some strands look more like 3A. They tangle extremely easily. I have figured out how to wash and style my curls, but I simply do not have the time to wet my hair every morning just to brush it (it's also way too cold where I live most of the year to go out with wet hair, and wetting AND drying my hair would take even more time). If I don't brush, two problems occur: 1. My hair is a tangled mess, and 2. Loose hairs that I would normally remove by brushing get everywhere during the day, which is annoying.

I've tried wearing a bonnet to bed, keeping my hair in plaits, and only using a wide-tooth comb, but it still looks scruffy and unkempt if I don't brush it properly. I'd be grateful for any techniques or tips on how to keep fine curly/wavy hair from looking messy...

(Routine: drugstore-brand curly shampoo and conditioner (dm balea Traumlocken) + once a week Garnier fructis Aloe Vera hair food + Garnier fructis Aloe vera leave-in conditioner + Noughty Howdy gurls gel that I scrunch out with some jojoba oil)

Discussion Curly hair when riding motor

I have a dilemma in which sometimes I don’t want to drive my scooter because it force my hair to become flat after wearing balaclava. Any tips or what do you usually do?

Products:
Cantu Shampoo
Cantu Conditioner
Cantu Leave In Conditioner
Cantu Curl Cream

Routine:
Using shampoo twice/thrice per week. I use conditioner, then apply like 2 thumbs of leave conditioner and small amount of curl cream. Comb it to form the curls and shake my head afterwards and since I don’t have diffuser I face to the fan, so air dried.

Discussion So…. I broke a law, maybe?

Upvotes

This is my usual routine:

  1. Wet hair
  2. Suave Shampoo Biotin kind X 1
  3. Sprouts brand argon oil conditioner
  4. Brush
  5. Rinse
  6. Eco gel w/olive oil
  7. Being hair foam
  8. Scrunch
  9. Plop
  10. Blowdry

BUT I tried something new…….. and illegal

  1. DAWN DISHSOAP LEMON
  2. Suave Shampoo Biotin kind
  3. Conditioner ONLY on the mids and ends
  4. Rinse
  5. Aunt Jackie’s DONT SHRINK flaxseed curl custard
  6. Being foam
  7. Plop
  8. Blowdry

I use a curl brush with the grooves on the side to separate and then finger curl.

ANYWAY: the dawn made such a difference. My curls were bouncy and happy after I did it. So, I will be using dish detergent every other wash.

Thoughts?

I know I’m supposed to add how I sleep, but I probably break a law there too. I make a claw clip Mohawk and then put a bonnet on it.

BUT DISHSOAP! Please give it a try

Help! I want my hair to curl to the top!

Hello, so this is my first time posting here but recently I've been starting to embrace my curls a bit! So basically I've been wanting my hair to curl to the top or at least halfway thru. My routine is:

  1. I wash my hair twice with the
L’Oreal Elvive total repair 5 repairing shampoo

  2. I condition my hair and detangle with it in the shower using
Bioblas, botanic oil hair care conditioner
I then put it up in a bun and let it marinate then wash it out.

  3. I then just scrunch the water out of my hair, plop it and then after a while I take it out and let it air dry.

  4. Then after awhile I try to take the frizz a little using
    Olaplex N^7 Bonding oil

I don’t use any other product aside from these; no styling products used. I also have never box dyed or bleached my hair or straightened it very much. And for sleeping, I put it in a simple loose braid. I don’t have any refresh routine.

I’ve been wanting to try out products but don’t know what to buy. I also just want to tame the frizz and just Ty to give my hair a more smooth and nice look.
Looking for suggestions good styling products and on how to get my hair to grow (since I have thin hair) and curl more.

Help! Rice protein shampoo/conditioner that's affordable?

I'm so disappointed. It seems Not Your Mothers discontinued their Curl Talk shampoo and conditioner with the rice protein. It's been the only thing to keep my curls tame and not make me look like a soft poodle. What they put in it's place doesn't have rice protein in it, has scent/fragrance (I have sensitive skin due to Rosacea so I can't do that) and seems to be more of a clarifying Shampoo than a general shampoo. This really, sucks, for lack of a better word. Why do companies do this? It was affordable and actually worked for my hair. I managed to find a listing on Amazon which I'm guessing is what's left of their stock. I might get two orders of it, that'll get me through the rest of the year and maybe a little longer, then I don't know what I'll do. I'd prefer something with rice protein, but I'm also not wanting to spend on shampoo and conditioner what I spend to fill my car with half a tank of gas. At the moment I still have half a bottle left of each the shampoo and conditioner at home at least.

Routine: NYM Curl Talk Shampoo, NYM 3-n-1 conditioner, Herbal Essences curly hair mousse, 10-15 minutes in a curly hair towel, and air dry the rest of the time. I also just started once a week NYM Bond Building Shampoo and Conditioner since I've been having issues with shedding.

Help! My curly hair dreams aren’t possible

Hello! I live in Miami, FL where the humidity is 2000%. I am also a runner and I run in the afternoons, so basically I wash my hair in the evenings after I have turned into a swamp monster.
However, this is not ideal for my curls.

My hair takes 5+ hours to try. I diffuse before bed, but when I walk my dog in the morning, the humidity for that 20 mins ruins them. My hair hates refreshing, everything just sits on top and it looks heavy and gross.

I can’t wash it in the morning because I am disgusting after I run and it needs to be washed immediately after

I tried wash now, style later, but get the same reaction as when I refresh

Routine: I use all humidity blocking products, the whole Ouidad humidity line incl shampoo cond and gel and have tried a hard hold gel (innersense) on top, but that morning humidity walk gets me every time and I look like crap by time i go to work

Any suggestions ?

Help! Briogeo Curl Charisma or Ouidad Anti-Frizz for fine hair

My current routine is:
1) Shampoo with Not Your Mother's Tahitian Gardenia Flower & Mango Butter
2) Condition with Not Your Mother's Blue Sea Kale & Pure Coconut Water OR Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner
3) I'll then add Doux Mousse Def Texture foam (from roots to tips), let that dry and then add a bit of Not Your Mother's Frizz Control Curl Talk Sculpting Gel
4) I then try to let my hair air dry but will sometimes blow dry (with diffuser)
5) I break the crunch with either a bit of gel on my finger tips or some argan oil
6) I sometimes sleep with a bonnet but my hair gets messed up by morning no matter what it seems, and so I'll refresh with some water and nothing else if I can get away with it.

As I've gotten older, my (2b-3a) hair has gotten finer and I'm really cutting down on the amount/number of styling products I use as it tends to weight it down and increase frizz. I'm also about to run out of shampoo & conditioner so which should I get: Briogeo Curl Charisma or Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Anti-Frizz Nano Technology?

Help! Struggling with new haircut, looking for advice!

Thumbnail

I recently had a major haircut and it’s changed everything for me, now I cannot figure out how to work with it!

I usually have pretty long curly hair, to my shoulders or usually past. My newest hairstylist decided to do what she wanted and just chopped it basically to my chin. Shocking at first, but it’s starting to grow on me.

My issue is that now I cannot figure out how to style my hair without looking like a Dutch boy, and my products are no longer working the same? My routine is I usually wash my hair once a week with Biolage Ultra Hydra Source, and air dry, but now I can’t seem to go two days without having to wash it because it gets so greasy and matted on the top? I use a shea moisture - raw shea butter deep moisturizing twist defining curl cream (lol sorry long title, mods were mad) and I’m still using it very sparingly, but I feel like now it’s making my hair greasier and stringier than it was before. It gives my curls a crazy pop for one day, then it’s gross.

I can go natural with no curl cream and it looks and feels so good and soft, but one strong blow of the wind and my hair is so fine that it almost blows the curls out into a frizz.

Has anyone used a sea salt spray? Would that be more natural and less greasy?

I would love some recommendations, advice, whatever!

1st photo is the long hair, 2nd is right after it got cut and my stylist used a ton of mousse for whatever reason, 3rd is that 2nd day no wash kinda greasy look.

Hair Victory! Even my shadow is having a good hair day

Post image
79 Upvotes

I’ve been on a long journey to manage my gray 3A curls. I finally figured out a routine and products and generally have more good hair days than bad. Today, when I saw my shadow and could see my pretty curls on the wall, I had to pause and take a photo of it. I took this as a sign it was my day to contribute my routine here.

My curls were 2C but after menopause and letting my hair go gray, they became 3A. None of my products and routines worked so I started from scratch with CGM. I learned that everything about CGM was completely wrong for my hair. I went through a lot of products and processes until I found a routine that gives me defined curls that last for 2-3 days. I knew I truly succeeded when I started getting regular compliments on my hair.

One of the biggest challenges has been getting the moisture right with my shampoo and conditioner. My hair is super soft with a lot of slip and not wiry. When I was coloring my hair, I needed masks, leave-ins, and oils. Now, if I have too much moisture, my hair becomes wavy and frizzy. I alternate between washing my hair and only using a conditioner (not a co-wash) the next two times when I shower. I found success with Living Proof Perfect Hair Day shampoo and conditioner on wash days (Amika Forget Frizz is 2nd place) and Bondi Curl Boss conditioner for the two alternate days. When the conditioner is applied, I comb it through and rinse immediately. I also make sure to rinse thoroughly.

I wrap my hair in a microfiber towel while I dry off and take care of my other routines. Once I’m ready to start styling, I re-wet a little with a spray bottle but my curls form best when I apply product on lightly wet, not dripping wet, hair. My secret weapon is Curls curl control paste. It’s less than $10 and one container lasts a while. I apply the curl control paste followed by a gel.

I learned that mousse created too much frizz and made the curls weird, and creams added too much moisture and straightened the curls. Once I realized my hair needed gel only, I had to go through several products to find what worked for me.  The Curls paste is a must but I have some more options for the second gel. My preferred gels are DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel or IGK Good Spin. They control my frizz better than Ouidad and don’t add too much buildup. Even with using a paste and a gel, my curls do not cast. If I use a firmer gel, such as Sexy Hair Hard Up or Harry's, I will get a cast and defined curls but they make my hair tacky and add build up. I prefer the soft curls.

I diffuse to at least 90% dry. Too much air drying creates frizz for me. Once it completely dries, that’s pretty much how it stays for the next couple days. I sleep with my hair pineappled and in a bonnet. In the morning, I gently shake and scrunch but I don’t use any products to refresh the curls. Usually just scrunching with my hands is enough. My curls become more voluminous and fluffy throughout the day. I live in a humid area so I embrace the fluff because it hides frizz really well. If it does get frizzy or too puffy, I use a little gel to smooth it down.

I disliked the whole discovery process because it meant having frizzy and messy looking hair for a while. But I’m glad I invested the time (and money) to figure it out. The pretty curls are worth it. Good luck to those still on the journey!

Help! Extremely Dry, Curly Hair

Hi all,

I have extremely dry, fine, curly hair. It's always been dry and now that I am in perimenopause it's gotten even worse. It breaks constantly. I want help with hydration and reducing the breakage. I wash and dry my hair about once a week. I have a hair pattern called Irish Curls, where the lower part of my hair is very curly and the top is less so - my curly hair routine has worked to increase the curls on top and has been pretty successful! I am in my late 40s and caucasian. I get hair cuts every 3 to 4 months. I am open to any and all hydration suggestions to help reduce breakage!

I currently mostly use innersense products.

Shampoo: Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath (shampoo twice or until it gets foamy)

Conditioner: Innersense Hydrating Mask (applied and left on until I am done rest of my showering routine)

Clarifying as needed: Malibu Undo Goo

Leave-In Treatment as needed: K18

Styling Products: Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control (Curl Cream) under Innersence I Create Lift Volumizing Foam (Mousse / Gel). I apply a small amount of curl cream mized with warm water, then I apply two pumps of the gel mousse to each side and back. I work all that through with a wide curl comb.

Styling Routine: I clip sections and use the Bounce Curl separating brush to separate curls before scrunching in sections. I blow dry using a shark blow dryer with diffuser until cast. I then usually allow to air dry. Once dry I scrunch it out using Innersense I Create Shine Hair Oil.

When sleeping I put my hair up in a pineapple style and I use silk pillow cases. I never brush my hair when it's dry.

Thanks!

Help! What heat/sun protection do you use?

I have a daughter who I think has curly hair. All her top hair is straight-ish but anything under us curly and her sides.

Our Routine / Products we use:

We use ogx coconut shampoo and conditioner as a family, I don't have curly hair but my husband does, like a porcelain doll

I use fairy tale rosemary spray because I do not want lice at home and like in many public schools there's a case here and there.

We have silk pillowcases but she always ends ur everywhere in the bed.

We do air dry because my daughter does not like loud sounds.

She's an outside kid so she's constantly in the sun and won't really keep a hat on

Sorry for the bad pictures but we were in a rush this morning and she had just woken up.

Her hair is straight at the top but the bottom and sides can go from a 3a to a 3c

Help! High porosity fine curly hair struggling with short lasting volume + structure

Thumbnail
gallery
85 Upvotes

Hi!
I'm looking for a bit of advice giving my curls structure that can last more than a few hours! Frankly, my hair can look great after a fresh diffuse and aggressive head toss (pic 1), but it'll start flopping soon after (pic 2)
My hair is ridiculously quick to lose moisture (nape even starts drying if not under constant stream), so I apply styling products immediately after the shower turns off. I've tried damp styling, but the clumping is terrible and I always end up with tons of stringy curls. Soaking wet seems to be the way for me.
My curls are VERY lightweight and are very prone to being fluffed out my friction, so I'd like to see if products can be shifted around for more volume and structure so I'm not just relying on packing my head with dry stylers after a flimsy wet styling or putting on a hat because I can't get any lift.
Additional note: I'm aiming to grow my hair out into a longer wolf cut/shag style with bangs kept above eyebrow.

CURRENT ROUTINE:

Curl Wow Hooked Shampoo (double shampoo)

Ouidad Vitacurl Balancing Rinse Conditioner (extra water out of hair ~3mins in then rinse)
- While that's sitting I usually comb through it with a bounce curl brush

Tresemme Amplified Volume Plumping Mousse on soaking wet hair, egg sized dollop worked down into spreadable lather on roots only

Quarter sized amount of Ouidad Climate Control gel distributed across entire head immediately after mousse [I also sometimes use Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Flash Freeze Gel, though the initial higher hold doesn't do much for the curls on the top of my head]

I DO NOT BRUSH STYLE OR SECTION. All wet styling is done bent over changing angles of the head.

Scrunch out excess water and microplop with microfiber towel

Mist Tresemme protecting heat styling spray over entire head

Hover diffuse upside down on high heat medium speed, then cup diffuse on medium heat low speed

Shake out roots and toss head (I never have a gel cast)

I use a satin shower-cap-style bonnet at night with my hair completely loose within (too short for tying up rn!) and do not have a refresh routine.
______
Any advice that can help me combat these issues will be greatly appreciated!

Help! Genuinely HOW do I avoid straight roots?

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

Hey, so just as the title says, for the love of whichever god I CANNOT avoid straight roots.

My hair is 3A-3B but my roots have always been straight no matter what I do (pics 1 &2). I have fine, low-porosity (I’m guessing) hair and my hair routine is pretty simple. I use any shampoo I find at the supermarket (currently using head&shoulders) and I stay consistent with the Garnier banana hair food mask. I style my hair upwards with the bounce hair brush, I use a little bit of gel (enough to create a cast) and Wellaflex mousse to scrunch them up, and then I scrunch out excess water/product with a tshirt while being upside down. I then dry my hair with a diffuser upside down with the scrunching method and place hair clips on my roots afterwards to create some volume.

After all of this, my roots are still straight. It’s inevitable at this point and I genuinely can’t do anything to prevent them. I style my hair in a way to get rid of my middle part but still, nothing. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s just my natural curl pattern. My hair’s long, reaching my lower back, but I also have plenty of short layers so I don’t think it’s the weight of my hair (since the inside part of my hair/the longest ones are also the curliest, and also from the root). I’ve seen other people posting hair routines and I’ve noticed that even when their hair is wet, they still have some waves on their roots (pic 3), indicating that they’re already curly and just need the right technique. Mine is just plain straight.

So y’all, what do I do?

Wash day was 5 days ago using as i am shampoo and i desperately needed to co wash. I usually apply As i Am leave in and Mielle mousse however i decided to avoid putting anything in my hair. Routine was as i am co wash then I just raked each section to where i want it to sit and scrunch the front i diffused my roots and air dried the rest. I think it turned out pretty good i use a bonnet and a silk pillowcase and i shall see if it’ll last at all 👍

Hair Victory! Ouidad Gel Review

Thumbnail
gallery
761 Upvotes

Hey y’all!!

First two photos—Day 2 hair (last wash day)
Second two photos—Day 4 hair (two wash days ago AKA the photos aren’t from the same week/“trial”)

Shampoo: Suave Clarifying Shampoo, TGIN rose water hydrating shampoo
Conditioner: Shea Moisture manuka honey & mafura oil intensive hydration masque
Leave-In Conditioner: Kinky Curly Knot-Today leave-in conditioner
Curl Cream: Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls (a little for scent)
Gel: Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel
Styling application: mix of shingling, finger coiling, and styling brushes. I think I finger coiled more on the most recent wash day, but I’ve been getting lazier with it lol
Drying: Air dried mostly, I think I used a diffuser for like 10 minutes on one wash day
Sleep routine: Pineapple hair, bonnet
Refresh: Water on a few curls in the front, a little bit of gel used if the curl happens to be noticeably frizzier than the rest, only really done if needed days 4–6.

One thing I dislike about gels is how limp they can make my hair look by making each individual curl “skinny.” This gel KIND OF did that, but not as bad as some other gels I’ve used.

I personally dislike gel casts and having to break them, but one thing I’ve found with this gel is that you can control how much of a cast it gives you. With other gels, even a tiny bit of product gives you a guaranteed cast whereas the Ouidad gel I used is more of a slider. If I want more of a cast in a certain area, I put more product, and vice versa in areas I want to be more voluminous. I’m still working on my specific ratios to get my desired effect, but I’ve used this on around 3 wash days now and I think I’m getting there a bit.

It has a more hydrating feel to it when I feel it on my fingers and in my hair. Another thing I don’t like about gels is the sticky residue left on my fingers after use. I won’t say this gel has zero sticky residue, but it’s significantly less which is a major plus to me.

It has a pleasant smell that I’ve gotten some compliments on but I feel like it’s easier for me to go nose-blind to it vs. my normal routine.

In conclusion, I’ll be implementing this into my routine around the part of my hair that I need to have slightly more hold, AKA the crown of my head (tighter curl than the rest and a lower porosity).

I trimmed one inch off this wash day, and I think I have around 1-1.5 inches left to go (maybe 2 in some areas) before the curl pattern is mostly uniform from root to ends 🎉 First two photos are post-trim, second two are pre-trim. Difference isn’t that obvious but it’s still satisfying to see damaged ends fall into the trash can.

Currently typing this from my college dorm room I just moved into. Sophomore year let’s gooooo!! 💗💗💗

Routine:
I wash my hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair Shampoo, followed by Redken Conditioner. Sometimes I use the L’Oréal Absolut Repair Molecular Mask after shampooing instead.
For styling, I apply Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment, followed by Maui Moisture Curl Cream to help define my curls.
I air dry my hair completely and don’t use heat for drying.

Before & After Hair growth after a little over a year

Growing it out to donate, but I’m kinda falling in love and excited for it to be really long so I’ll probably keep it for a while. I felt like it was growing so slow but seeing pictures has definitely helped me see the difference. Is this a lot of growth? When I pull it straight, it’s nearly halfway down my back! Routine: I use Cantu brand shampoo and conditioner, as well as a Cantu spray leave in conditioner that I apply when my hair is soaking wet. I use an old t shirt to squeeze out the ends and let it air dry the rest of the way, I’ve found that helps if you have Irish curls like I do and the top doesn’t curl as tightly. Sleep like I’m fighting a war and frequently wake up with my retainers out of mouth and across the room so i don’t think a bonnet would stay on lol, and hate the sensation of satin. my family all has straight hair so I didn’t really even know I had curls until my late teens. Learning slow, anything else I should be doing? Also was told to switch from Cantu is it a bad brand?
