Just in Time for school: Duolingo Math has 3 New Features! šŸŽ‰

Hi everyone! šŸ‘‹

I’m back with another product update. This time it's about Duolingo Math!

Over the last few months, our Math team has been working on new features designed to give students more support when they get stuck, so they can keep learning instead of giving up or leaving the app to search for answers elsewhere.

And if you’re asking, ā€œ...wait, Duolingo teaches math?ā€ Yes, we do! Duolingo Math is already available right inside the Duolingo app.

Our goal with Math isn’t to replace what students are learning in school, or become another worksheet app. We want to give students a way to practice math that feels approachable, bite-sized, and (hopefully) genuinely fun. Just like our other courses!

Duolingo Math can be especially helpful if you’re:

  • a parent looking for an easy way to help your child build confidence in math
  • a teacher looking for another way to encourage students to practice
  • supporting a student who could use extra practice or explanations when they get stuck

ā“What’s new (and coming soon…)

Three new Math features are rolling out broadly to learners. Availability may vary a bit as we roll them out in waves:

🧠 Math Coach
When students encounter a new Math topic, their personal Math Coach, Eddy, is there to help! He introduces new concepts, walks through examples, and gives students the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

šŸ’” In-Lesson Support
When a student is working through a lesson and comes across a problem they don’t know how to solve, they can ask for help right there in the exercise. The goal is to provide just enough guidance to help them understand the problem and keep learning—without having to leave the lesson.

āž• Multistep Problems
Sometimes students understand a new concept but aren’t quite ready to tackle problems completely on their own. Multistep Problems guide students through the problem one step at a time, helping them build the skills and confidence they need for independent practice.

A few notes upfront:

  • These features have been rolling out gradually over the past few months and are becoming more broadly available. If your student has already tried them, we’d love to hear what you think!
  • Availability may vary depending on device and app version. If you think your student should have access but doesn’t, please chime in here and our Community team will try to assist.
  • As always, we’ll continue iterating on these features based on what we learn.

Once your student has had a chance to try them, we’d love to hear:

  • Which features has your student tried?
  • Did they help your student better understand what they were learning?
  • Was there anything your student found confusing or frustrating?
  • Is there anything you’d change?
  • What else would make Duolingo Math more helpful -or more fun- for your student?

As always, thanks for trying new things with us and sharing thoughtful feedback. Hearing about your student’s experience genuinely helps shape what the team builds next. šŸ’š

General Discussion Okay, this is getting ridiculous

Post image

Before, 50 points was still reasonable, 60 were so-so. But 70? Why punish the users for using the app too much asking them for more and more points? I get that it’s not by any means mandatory but still…

Constructive Criticism Duolingo is too childish now

Ive been learning spanish from 2017.
What once was a learning tool became a spam XP machine.
I liked to come and do my lessons, now every lesson ends with 3 useless chests, constant double XP, streaks and unnecessary missions.

I get that it’s used to hook young people in, but I wish I could just cancel it and focus on my lessons without the unnecessary gamifying stuff

XP was once something to be excited about, to work hard on getting, today it’s just spammed and even topping the league doesn’t mean much if I know someone can get double and triple XP for nothing.

P.S units ending with you being tested on words you never practiced in units is so annoying! I’ve had the same 5 words in every unit end, while never seeing them used in a sentence.

Constructive Criticism Spoiler warning: you don't have to do the Monthly Challenges. Spoiler

So weird how it's "Duolingo is a terrible app and I'm going to stop using it" one day and then it's "I can't do the Monthly Challenge because it's too hard to do every day" the next.

Make up your mind, people.

I know it's hard when you have quests like-

*checks posts*

"Extend your streak" and "Spend 15 minutes learning" and "Do three lessons".

Really?

Doing the three quests every day for 20 days gets you the 60 that people are currently complaining about. Do the Friends Quest each of those weeks and that's 70/75.

Or, and this is the big one...just don't do it if you don't want to.

General Discussion WTF ARE THEY DOING? 70 daily Challenges?

Post image

Last month it was 60 challenges and now 70. are they trying to push people away from the app?
People are already not even willing to put effort anymore. Diamond Tournament contenders are in with minimal xp points.

General Discussion Oh you have GOT to be kidding me...

I had a 480 day streak, unbroken... I literally didn't make it by SECONDS... and it's only because it's my birthday today and I got home late from celebrating with my family ;-;

And I was sure I still had freeze streaks, too!

I know this doesn't actually matter in the grand scheme of things, it's just a number on a screen. But damn it, does it sting. Especially since I was literal seconds away. The clock turned to 0:00 just as I was finishing the last exercise. Anyway, just wanted to vent my frustration and disappointment a bit. Thanks for reading.

Constructive Criticism I’m sorry????? 65 points????

Post image
72 Upvotes

The only reason I still stick to this app is because I have earned EVERY monthly badge and my streak is 1242. I’m a VEEEERRRYY casual learner, often getting my points through the flash card/words lessons. This makes it feel like a chore. I don’t often do the unit lessons because on the free account it’s hard to learn it properly and pass the lessons. I’ve paid for super intermittently but I don’t even think I’d want to pay if they’re just going to keep moving the goal posts?????

General Discussion My biggest complaint with Duo is the lack of explanation

• Upvotes

What the title says. As much as I enjoy the app's approach to learning Spanish, the lack of background explanations is frustrating. So I've been looking for something to augment Duo to fill in that gap, and I think I found it- and it's free.

Look for an app called Language Transfer. It's just a series of short lessons where a teacher walks a student through Spanish language rules.

Constructive Criticism SEVENTY?! WHAT HAPPENED TO SIXTY!?

Post image

There’s no way, NO WAY AM I GONNA DO SEVENTY QUEST POINTS ALL IN ONE GO, SO if you need to complete 70 quest points, LOCK IN,

r/duolingo 11h ago

General Discussion Why has the number of quests increased? It used to be 50 for the longest time, then last month it became 60, and now it’s 65. Even 50 was already so hard—why do they keep increasing it?

General Discussion Anyone Else Finding Their Placement in League Competition Nearly Guarantees a Top-Three Finish?

I've been on Duolingo for years (Streak = 1980 days) with a Super subscription for most of the time, and in the Diamond League for a long time. It used to be in the League competitions, there would always be at least 2-3 competitors that were at 10K XP after three days. In a way, this was fine, because then I just spent the time I wanted and focused on staying in the Diamond League. Then there was the "trick" to wait until nearer the end of the first day before joining to try to avoid the XP-burner-earners. But things seem to have changed. Now, most everyone in the competition I am "assigned" to barely earn 50 XP per day, and finishing in the top three is practically a guarantee. I'm not really complaining. In fact, I like being able to more compete against myself, or a Friend for the top spot. But I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this? And what do you think?

I can’t believe this! I’m so mad!

(Yes this is fake. But the point is that they will continue to raise the number if they think they can get you on app longer. It won’t help you get any better following the numbers. I lost my badge streak a long time ago. I found out not chasing this stupid badge number was ultimately a good choice.)

Ciao!

Look at this new Duolingo feature Duolingo Stories no longer showing their titles?

I noticed that Duolingo Stories are now just labeled ā€œStoryā€ instead of showing the title like they used to.

Is this a new change? What do you think about it?

Language Question. Duolingo update

Duolingo updated the French course for me about a week ago. It gave me six extra units to ā€œcatch upā€ with new words but after I’ve started the new unit after completing the catch up units it’s still telling me to speak so many words that I’ve not even done before…..

Anything to do about it or no?

General Discussion I lost August medal by just one point after 31 consecutive months

• Upvotes

I was unemployed on August, got a job in the last week. Due to that I lost some streaks, but unfortunately in the last day of August I lost my medal by 59/60 points, after clearing all my daily missions and this week’s friends mission. I’m really committed to the learning path and I even pay for Max Family to contribute to Duolingo’s mission. Is there any way I can get this medal? I’m really frustrated to lose it by just a single point after 31 consecutive months of achievement. Please help me! 😢

General Discussion Does anyone else get emotional when doing duolingo?

I got to the lesson where they offer to share an activity and everyone seemed so nice and asking me if I would like to share a bag of chips, go with them to the beach to swim, or go with them to karaoke? and I started crying. Since it all seemed so welcoming, and Ive never experienced this before. It not only showed me how to communicate in words but how to communicate in this emotional capacity of simplicity and welcoming attitude. I think I am emotionally healed in a way.
