Solo dev here. I read a lot and I own a Quest, and every reading app I tried was either a floating PDF viewer or half-broken. So I built the one I wanted and shipped it this month. It's called HoverTome.

This is probably just me being OCD but I hate that I cannot rename books I buy to read on my iPad. In addition to books from Amazon, I also read books from BookSprout, BookSiren etc and if the files are no directly from the Amazon store, they are often gibberish titles that are difficult to figure out their names and they cannot be opened to see what the title is outside of my kindle app. Any thoughts?

One thing I found strange was that I couldn't share the cover of the book I was reading whether through Apple Books or Play Books, or listening to through Audible.

Using the in-app share options didn't really offer a pleasing way of showcasing the book! Even GoodReads doesn't. I would resort to taking a screenshot, but this left something to be desired.

I built it because I had ebooks and PDFs I wanted to finish while walking or commuting, but many of them didn’t have audiobook versions. The basic idea is simple: import a book you already own, choose a narrator, and turn it into an audiobook on your iPhone or iPad.

What it currently does:

• Recognizes text in scanned or mixed PDFs with OCR
• Offers narrator choices across 9 languages, with voice samples before converting

I can’t write trope tickers. I’ve tried but always end up having to give my books a unique angle. Which means my stories tend to be trope twisters that either delight or disappoint readers.

A case in point is A Big Bluff and Some Green Stuff, Book 1 in the Jake Rodwell Zombie Cop series. One reader gave it 5 stars and said they ‘couldn’t put it down’. Another branded it ‘just awful’ and I suspect would have given it zero stars had that option been available.

It’s a story that starts off as a cosy police drama – a cop looking to downsize the number of criminals he has to arrest and cases he has to investigate so he can spend more time with his wife and young daughter. The solution – a posting to the sleepy coastal town of Bluff Cove in Cornwall, England.

So far, so unexceptional. And then a flash of light from the beach changes everything. Absolutely everything.

Expect not just zombies, but also aliens. And pirates. And zombie pirates. And zombie aliens. But not zombie alien pirates as that would be silly.

You’ll get your fill of head shots and slashes, not walking dead but running dead and creepy characters. But also the emotional pull of Jake Rodwell needing to protect his family from the forthcoming apocalypse.

On top of all that, something happens at the end of the book that turns Rodwell’s life on its head and spins the series in a direction no other zombie story I’ve encountered has explored.

You might not get as far as Books 2 and 3 in the series. But thanks for getting this far with this post.

I’m soft-launching a project I’ve been working on called Proxie, and this felt like the right community to share it with.

I read a lot digitally, and one thing has always bothered me: I can finish an ebook with dozens of highlights, notes, and thoughts scattered throughout it… and then they mostly disappear into an archive I rarely look at again.

I wanted something more permanent.

Proxie turns the personal part of your reading — your highlights, margin notes, reflections, and annotations — into a beautifully designed physical edition made for your bookshelf.

It isn’t a replacement for the ebook or another copy of the original book. It’s more like a physical keepsake of your experience reading it.

For Kindle readers, I’ve also been working on a simple way to bring your existing highlights and notes into Proxie, then organize, refine, and preview everything before creating your edition.

The idea I've kept coming back to is:

We’re at the soft-launch stage now, so I’m especially interested in feedback from people who actually read ebooks regularly.

I built this, so obviously I’m biased — but at this stage I’m much more interested in hearing what ebook readers think than pretending we already have everything figured out.

I have seen a recent post made by Repulsive-Funny-737 about his app TOMEIO, which is essentially the same take on the Stremio model applied to the ebook medium. I can't speak for the depth of my app's ebook coverage and features compared to TOMEIO just yet, I haven't tested his app but one interesting feature I have is audiobook read-alongs. You can pair audiobooks with it's repsective e-book and listen to the audiobook as you read the book and the progress tracking for both will be combined.
