Last night, a locked door showed me who was willing to open theirs
Last night, around midnight, my bathroom door somehow locked itself. I live alone in a studio, so I had nowhere else to go. I asked my group for help, but everyone was probably asleep.
Then I texted the person I still consider one of my closest friends. I sent him a video, and i called to tell him what had happened. He said we could fix it in the morning.
I didn’t expect him to come anyways . But somewhere inside, I hoped he would say, “Until then, you can use my bathroom.” He lives next building, and once I considered his home a little like my own.
He didn’t say it.
Maybe he was sleepy, distracted, or simply didn’t think of it. I know a forgotten gesture doesn’t make someone heartless. But sometimes what hurts isn’t what a person does it’s realizing that the care which comes naturally to you may no longer come naturally to them.
I finally texted an American girl in my building. As an Indian, I felt hesitant disturbing her so late because I respect her privacy and know she usually sleeps early. Yet her first response was, “Come use my bathroom.” Then she came over, stayed with me, and helped open the locked door.
Afterward, she said, “Maybe the universe wanted me to be awake for you tonight.”
well that was the real lesson. The person I loved couldn’t open his door for me, while someone I was afraid to disturb opened hers without hesitation.
Sometimes love teaches you attachment, but unexpected kindness teaches you where safety truly lives. 🤍
