Hello!

I’d really love to catch (and release) and beautiful green broad-winged katydid. They are my favorite bug and they’re just so darn cute.

If I’m located in the midwest where should I go/ where should I look!! I hit up the katydid subreddit but there’s not much traction there… anything will help!

Hello! Im planning to get a Japanese rhinoceros beetle l3 one male one female, and I have zero experience of taking care of a beetle larvae. I did have 4 pet beetles before but they were adults(i uploaded some pics of them).
I did watch some tutorials on YouTube and the guy said that you should add some dead leaf or wood pieces to the soil, sth like that.

Can you guys pls offer me some advice? Maybe about the humidity, temperature, the soil, when they will emerge into an adult beetle and do u need to dig them up yourself, soil depth… (also do u need to give some beetle jelly to the larvae?)

As a kid my grandfather had a small green house where he grew plants.

He found a blue butterfly that was small and it looked like an Xerces. I had never seen anything like it. I had never seen him cry but he teared up and said he thought they were extinct and ran to call some national wildlife number he had that was his friend.

My grandma immediately purposely killed it for her dead butterfly collection.
…yep she was an evil woman. She probably actually killed it because it made him happy.

I still cry about it.
I had never seen my grandfather more upset in my life he wasn’t even angry just so sad.

Is there any other butterfly that looks like an Xerces? Perhaps he was mistaken?
He had a book he used to reference it and everything

He called the wildlife guy back and he either ended up giving them the dead body to study or telling him it flew away to not break his heart.

My cousins have the dead butterfly collection now and won’t let me see it and may have thrown it away.

I found a swallowtail butterfly chrysalis on the ground. At least I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I have a lot of caterpillars on my little lemon tree. Should I place it somewhere in my garden and hope for the best? Or should I place it in a butterfly pop up enclosure and keep it safe? If it just turned into a chrysalis in the last 24-48 hours, how long till it comes out as a fully formed butterfly? I'm located in Southern California if that makes a difference. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I just want to do what's best. Thank you!

Last week I found some of these bugs along the seams of my mattress and on my bedside table. I had pest control come out and he said he was certain they're not bedbugs but didn't know what they were. I've vacuumed all along the seams of my mattress and the whole rest of the mattress and sprayed crawling insect spray on the floor around my bed and was going to repeat this again in a weeks time (is this the best way to deal with them?)

In the meantime I've been sharing a bed with my little boy as there were no signs of the bugs in his room. However, tonight as I was about to get into bed with him I've found 3 bugs in his bed. Google is telling me they're booklice and that it's safe to let my son carry on sleeping as they're harmless but I'm not familiar with the bugs so would like a bit of advice, if anyone can help identify them please? They're super tiny so it's hard to get very clear pictures of them, I've used macro mode on my phone and zoomed in a bit also so these are the clearest pics I can get of them. I am based in scotland. Thank you

Discovered these weird little leaf cocoon(?) things with this slime and worm inside?? What did I find?!

Are these termites? Found small clusters of them on my staircase this afternoon.

Google is saying reproductive termites. If yes, looking for advice on how to handle and how urgently I’d need to call an exterminator! Thanks!

i was downstairs then i go upstairs to my room and im greeted by a crane fly which freaks me out and i am back downstairs currently

ik crane flies arent mosquitos or blood sucking so they arent even dangerous just dumb and i cant flippin throw anything at it cuz then itll just completely ignore it or get one shotted

but i cannot get it out of my room and i would like to sleep without knowing that some creature is in my room flying about and probably will accidentally bump into me

i opened the window and offed the light when i saw it but didnt leave the door closed and the hallway light to my room is on so that probably isnt very good

also theres another one chilling above the stairs i do not want 2 of them in my room most prefferably they can both just be outside

so how do i safely get crane fly out of my room, maybe non safely but this is insect reddit so probably dont like insects being killed

i hope this doesnt sound mean. crane flies are nice just at a distance

so it looks like this moth decided my kitchen window is a good place to lay her eggs. should i let these hatch in peace or will that end with her babies taking over my apartment? i'm generally against killing bugs as long as my health isn't at risk.

p.s. it's currently pretty warm here so my kitchen window is constantly angled open

I've never seen this before and couldnt find anything similar on Google! At first I thought it was just the rain droplets on its back making the patterns look warped, but no those are the actual patterns it has! Sorry I couldn't keep the camera still with how much I had to zoom in. I'll put some still pictures in the comments (would've put the pics in the post itself but then i wouldn't have been able to include the video). Is this rare??? Regardless, its absolutely beautiful!!!

I found these few dozen bugs with cracked eggs on the leaf of helianthus plant. Any idea what they are?

Anyone know what it is? Reverse image search is saying picture winged fly but I’m not sure- none of the photos look like what is on my hand that I found online. Sorry it’s kind of hard to get a good picture of it. It’s very small maybe two or 3 mm at the most. Something is destroying one of my dahlias (but no other varieties). Could be a whole host of other bugs though. Trying to ID this one. Thank you!

Idk if this is a sub for insect owners aswell but figured y’all might have some insight either way.

Recently I fell down the Antscanada rabbit hole with his ginormous vivarium ecosystems and in these the roaches and crickets reproduce independently to hold up the entire ecosystems as the common prey item,
And I’m wondering if any of y’all have had luck breeding crickets or grasshoppers in a bioactive setup?
