The implosion of the Titan submarine (OceanGate) was so rapid that the pain wasn't even registered by the brain. They didn't feel anything at all. Utterly instantaneous.

I recently watched a video about what would happen if you were 6m away from a nuke when it detonates and it was essentially the same outcome. Your entire body is converted to ionized plasma in a few billionths of a second and you instantly cease to exist

Don't look at it, trust me. There are some animations of what exactly happened without the gore if you're really curious but suffice to say it's nightmare fuel.

Hopefully they were gone before they realized what was happening. That right there is why that career path pays extremely, extremely well.

The crazy thing is that it's so insane that I don't think a simulation showing it would be believable. Like it just simply wouldn't do it justice, it's hard for our brains to comprehend something so instant.

They didn't become "physics", they just fucking died. When you see it parroted on every thread about Titan it comes across as performative, like upvote my super profound intelligent comment, but you know they're just repeating the same thing they saw in 50 other threads about this. It's basically a meme at this point.

"Become physics" just means that the normal ways you discuss people dying - suffocation, poisoning, organ failure, blood loss, etc, become irrelevant compared to there just suddenly not being a body there anymore due to an extreme physics event. In the Titan implosion, the difference between the human body and the ambient seawater would have almost instantly been rendered irrelevant, as that amount of pressure collapsing in would liquefy the body and disperse the molecules.

I think part of what is irritating about it, at least for me, is that physics is always happening, the implication in that statement is that you "become physics" when you die but you are always "being physics", you don't convert to physics upon death. So it sounds smart, but the moment you think about it it stops making sense

You can make that argument about everything though, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all so closely interlinked. The separation is more for our own convenience than anything else.

The point, in the original context (being in the way of a laser powered by the sun's entire output), is an event happening so rapidly and with so much energy involved that biological processes don't matter at all..

Given the timescales involved here, it's just about applicable.

A while back, I learned that when someone dies from a fall from a great height, they don't experience the impact. They are falling so fast that the last thing they will be conscious of is being a short distance from the ground. The actual impact will not have time to register in the brain.

The documentary The Bridge has an interview with a guy that survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge and IIRC he said pretty much exactly that. Basically the instant his foot left the bridge he regretted it. Most don't survive that fall, though.

Only if you're actively aware of it. Plenty of ways to die where it blindsides you. Mainly foul play, but even tripping and cracking your head on the ground you may not even realize that you're about to die.

It’s terrifying to think about death. The pessimistic part of me says that, by all chances, i will know and it will be painful. Even cracking my head on the ground, there’s gonna be at least a few seconds of excruciating pain and terror, and a realization that you’re living your last moments. It’s so dreadful to think about, but the physiology of it is intriguing

a woman a year or two ago committed suicide through jumping off a plane, one of those parachute jumpers that had done hundreds of jumps that year. She was a mom of a toddler, had gone through a divorce, and was dating her affair partner who was also one of those sky-divers but he was a coach, it was his job, anyways he had broken up with her recently, Brutal story,it was big news for a day or two where she was from.

I recall one San Fran bridge jumper who survived. He was very lucky to, of course. The impact broke plenty of bones. He got better (both physically and mentally) and surviving the fall changed his life completely.

Seems similar to a hit and run I was the victim of on my motorcycle. I was only doing about 25mph through an intersection, but someone made an illegal left turn in front of me as I was passing through.

The last thing I remember is seeing their crinkled hood passing by right in front of my face as I flew over it. I don't think I was out for long, but the next thing I remembered was being splayed out on the ground.

The woman driving got out of her car, I sat up, yelled what the fuck, and by the time I got my bearings and was able to stand up, she was gone. Left me with a totaled bike, a gnarly bruise on my thigh and a fractured right shoulder that as of two and half years later, I still don't have full mobility with.

Fortunately, I was wearing gear, or it would have been worse. According to a witness (and the marks left on my gear), I shot off my bike, flew over the hood superman style, hit the ground on my shoulder (explaining the fracture) and proceeded to slide on my face a bit before rolling onto my back. All I remember is the hood and being on my back.

Local PD was pretty inept from the start, but they gave up on it fairly quickly and that woman got away with it. I still think about her occasionally. She's just out there living her life and I'm left with the consequences.

Hey internet friend, I had pretty much the exact same accident, except I was riding a bicycle and it was a car full of spoilt rich young men/boys. It super sucks when there's no justice, huh.

I was doing about the same speed as you, I was out on a Saturday morning solo ride testing out some racing wheels. Dickheads decided to speed past and cut in front of me instead of waiting for 1 second, and woefully misjudged my speed. I remember thinking "oh f*ck" and turning my front wheel, which is all I had time to do, then the next thing I knew I was sliding along the road on my head and shoulder. I remember thinking "ohhhh, now I understand why people get gravel rash on their faces, it's impossible to lift your head up with this force on it"

Witnesses told the paramedics I flew over the car, I don't remember doing it. I just remember the nurses at the hospital later saying that I could have just as easily gone under the car instead and I was very lucky.

Broken arm, TBI, couldn't work full time for a year. Driver had to write me a letter saying sorry and do a defensive driving course. Cops didn't want to prosecute him for the more serious charge of careless driving causing injury, because his parents were rich and got a lawyer to fight it. WTF.

Pretty sure people have survived even those. People have dropped from planes 5 miles high with no parachute and survived. Extremely rarely with extreme circumstances, but it can technically happen.

Terminal speed is only guaranteed lethal when it's concrete to greet you. Though I think I recall people surviving even those, usually due to wind interrupting true terminal velocity though, so that probably doesn't count.

It has no relation to the lethality of impact with the ground regardless of surface other than it’s pretty damn fast and you likely won’t survive.

Not sure. But it’s up there on my retirement choices so to speak since I’m broke and don’t expect to catch up financially in order to retire. There are some realllllllly steep cliffs that I can hike to (just gotta stay relatively active lol). Now if euthanasia becomes legal for humans for depression and being broke I’d choose that route. Definitely wouldn’t choose the Titan route, not big on water besides drinking it.

Vegetable life assuming it was a jump big enough you hopped it ended you, probably suffering extreme hemorrhaging, that if Doctors some how saved you, you would suffer such extreme damage you would likely lose function over much of yourself forever.

A few years ago I fell about 7 feet directly onto the back of my head on concrete, but never lost consciousness (confirmed by a coworker as I was groaning in pain immediately upon impact and responding I wasn’t ok.) I very distinctly remember the entire fall but not the impact at all, just the exact moment after the impact where the pain burst out and every limb went numb and felt like it was flailing around despite being still when I looked at them visually.

I have to imagine it would be much the same had I died, just the fall and then suddenly nothing.

As anecdotal support, I wrecked my motorcycle and hit a concrete ditch wall almost perpendicularly (due to its angle and my in-air trajectory) at about 60mph. There was no "oh shit" or "oh no" thoughts, just an unintelligible sense of dread, but I don't remember hitting the concrete. I remember it rushing towards my face but I don't remember hitting it.

If we concidered that we need 300ms to register something, knowing than the terminal velocity of a human is about 200km/h. This mean than the last thing they will be conscious will be to be around 16,5m away from the ground. So everything that happens between the splash and 16,5m will not have time to register.

I saw something, decades ago and I don’t know if it was a movie or true or whatever, but this guy told a lady that if she was washing dishes in her kitchen (which they were in) and looking out the window when a nuke hit at a certain distance away and she dropped a fork in shock that she would be vaporized before the fork hit the floor. Again, don’t remember what it’s from but I’ve held that as truth for the last almost 40 years.

I went to school right next to JPL in California, and someone asked my history teacher about what he would do if we were involved in a nuclear war since JPL is very much a potential target.

His answer was “get a baseball glove, go to JPL, and try to catch the missile. It’ll be fastest that way”

Exactly: force is force. The force of an explosion is the same an implosion (equal Jules). As quick as an explosion would tear you apart the implosion is just the converse.

Or a plane crash. If a large boeing plane is traveling at 200mph and hits a large building the people in the back of the plane don't even register that the front of the plane crashed. They all just sort of crash at the same time...more or less.

Interesting side fact, as far as we know not a single human has actually experienced this.

As far as we know, only 2 Bomb detonations directly killed people in the explosions and in both of those cases the nearest person to the epicenter of the blast was hundreds of meters away below the airburst. Although it is still entirely likely/possible that the death of those people, at least if they were out int he open, was also so fast that they didn't register it or any pain. But yeah there's a rapid dropff pretty close in distance where it's definitely or at least most likely going to kill any given person in the zone but they will die varying degrees of not instantly ranging from seconds to days after being affected.
