Can’t believe how much vaping was aging me

I’ve been a heavy user of carts for a few years and have been trying to quit. I’ve managed a few long breaks (longest was about 10 weeks) but have slipped a few times. I’m currently 3 weeks THC free after ~2 months of heavy all-day-every-day use.

I’m turning 30 this year & I’m used to people thinking I’m younger than I am, it’s been happening since I was a kid. But I’ve been stressed as hell about how I look this year. It felt like I was aging at a rapid rate & I thought it was genetics catching up to me. My skin looked awful (I’ve been dealing with the worst acne I’ve ever experienced), my hair has been dry and frizzy. But it was more than that too. Not sure what exactly, I just felt like I looked old and haggard. Like the lines on my face were more pronounced.

THREE WEEKS LATER and holy shit. Yesterday was the first time in a long time I’ve looked in the mirror and didn’t feel dread about what I saw. I look so much better😭 My skin is FINALLY clearing up, the dark circles under my eyes are gone & overall I feel I look younger and brighter. Just applying my face sunscreen yesterday I was poking my cheeks bc of how supple the skin felt.

It’s just insane to me how much it was actually affecting how I looked (and also how I perceived myself). I felt like a stranger & hated myself for it.

Anyway, just posting this to remind myself not to go to the dispensary today.

You. Can. DO THIS

Upvotes

I’ve been in this sub for about a week now… not long, I know. But today I’ve seen more struggles than wins, and I wanted to share something and speak to my fellow people who are just starting or debating if this is the shift they need. And here’s what I have to say…

Two things. One, anything worth having is worth working for. And two, it doesn’t work unless YOU DO. You don’t quit, snap your fingers, and feel better. Think back to the times before you starting smoking. The things we all yearn to recover and experience again. This is your “why”. Why am I doing this? I want the mental clarity. I want to save money. I want to not feel dissociated. I want to laugh authentically. I want to FEEL things. I could go on.

My point is, we can’t point the finger. At the end of the day, we are all here because of the decisions we made years back. A joint with friends on a Friday night turned into a decade of abusing our lungs, brains, and bodies. This takes work, and it takes self realization. This isn’t about proving that you can do it to a spouse, a friend, a parent, a sibling, or anyone.

This process gets easier when you do it FOR YOU. Be selfish here people. You are reclaiming aspects of your life that have been gone for so long… it doesn’t matter what I think, whether you’ve quit, or are thinking about quitting, I am proud of you. The people around you are proud of you. But are you proud of you? Celebrate the small wins. Did you get through day 1? AWESOME, go grab a sweet treat down the street. Maybe a month? FanTASTIC! Go take the girlfriend/boyfriend out for a little dinner and a movie.

You can do this… it takes remembering your “why” and that you have to be doing this for yourself, and no one else. Find it in you to be the best version of yourself. No more “trying” to quit. You DID quit. And you CAN do this. You are worth the result and never forget it. Again, anything worth having is worth working for my friends. So go and get it. Much love people.

Reasons not to smoke again after a year

I’ll hit a year of no weed on Thursday and have been contemplating trying it again. I miss the big clouds of smoke I get from a bong hit and disconnecting from reality. Previously I smoked for 7 years, up to an 1/8 a day.

I’m saving money from not going to the dispo every other day and am much more emotionally stable and my life isn’t revolving around weed. Ive been single for a while and weed was always there to keep me company.

Can you folks list some reasons why I shouldn’t go back?

Day 2 after 33 years of daily smoking

I just shit myself. Apparently, your gut gets so used to cannabinoids that once it doesn't have it, it has to completely rewire itself. It's not just the brain fog, or suppressing nightmares, etc - your entire system gets used to relying on a foreign substance to help regulate basic functionality.

I'm never going back to wasting days (years/decades) - and I hope at least one person reading this realizes that there's a lot more going on with this than we'd care to admit.

I used to make excuses, too. Cannabis helped me for a long time, but it isn't without its downsides.

Still very much pro-weed, but not for me any more.

I finally smoked enough. I don't need it any more.

Day 3 sober, smoked heavily for 27 years, feeling good but nervous

Y'all are freaking me out. I was daily user, double hitting carts almost every hour, waking up and smoking 3-4 times every night.

First couple days sober I would have intermittent sweats or chills but today I'm feeling pretty good.

At work I would take walks every hour or so to hit carts. Now I'm walking and doing deep breathing and it seems cool for the time being but looking at what everyone here has gone through compared with how heavily I was using... Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.

The dreams haven't come back but that's what I've been dreading. I buckling up.

A big turning point

Today I'm 14 days w/o after 20 years as a heavy daily smoker. Been through a lot in the last 2 weeks, starting with an upset stomach for a couple days, then a week of non-stop sweating 24 hours a day. Now I'm coughing up dirty mucus every couple of minutes.

BUT, I finally have some positives to share! Last night I saw The Odyssey at a theater and I can honestly say it was the most enjoyable movie I can remember, especially because I didn't fall asleep, like usual. I never realized how much the weed was blunting the experience.

Now I just got back from a long walk while listening to music on my headphones, and it sounded just as good as that first time I got high and listened to a favorite song.

After all these years I didn't realize that it wasn't enhancing these experiences anymore, and was actually doing the opposite. I can't wait to try a really good steak while sober to see if the effect is similar.

The only one quitting in a relationship

Today is day 1 for me. Again.

I’ve quit many times & always think I can just “smoke this once,” but before I know it I’m back to daily use.

I want to quit.
I need to quit.
I am quitting.

My partner is heavily addicted & apparently has no interest in quitting.

It’s like the more I ask him to, the more he resists. He’s a stubborn MF.

Leaving him is not an option I want to consider. We have a beautiful life together with kids, a home, business, etc. & are aligned on pretty much everything—except smoking.

He grows it & smokes it & grows it & smokes it.

I started smoking again, in part, because I appreciated feeling connected to him again. Like, really connected.

When I’m not smoking & he is, I find myself irritated with him & start to think of him as a lazy POS even though that isn’t true.

I’m scared to be the only one quitting. I’m scared of what it will do to us because I know I’m going to get irritated, mouthy, & judgmental of him.

I’m curious to hear from other people who might be the only one to quit smoking in the relationship. How did you deal with your partner smoking? Any tips?

I’m not interested in hearing a bunch of people telling me to end things with him because it’s not that simple when you have a life & family together. This is the man I want to grow old with. But I am worried about being the only sober one.

Help. 😭 TIA. 🫶

Second post today - struggling so bad

Upvotes

I just want to feel NORMAL. I don’t want to go to MA bc it feels punitive and I don’t want to continue to suffer. When will this stop, it feels like never. I parked at the dispo last night and left, this is the longest I’ve been without it in over 2 years

Day 5 for me

Upvotes

5 days in… it has its ups and downs. But I’ve already noticed such a drastic, positive shift in my day to day.

For starters, I eat breakfast now because I wake up STARVING. I’d always put off eating, but didn’t know why at the time… LIGHTBULB, it’s because I was gorging myself between 9pm-1am every single night.

Next up is my desire to do things. It used to be so easy to come home, smoke, and think of any excuse not to make dinner, workout, walk the dogs, or something as simple as take a nap. I remember thinking “if I nap, I’m wasting my high” which inevitably lead to severe sleep deprivation that I didn’t even know I had. I fall asleep earlier, I sleep better, and wake up hungry for a nutritious breakfast.

Also, I feel this level of self love that’s been missing for so long. I want to take care of myself… showering more frequently, eating healthier, wanting to be outside more. All subconscious responses to just being sober and wanting to do something with my time.

I’m excited to see what two weeks looks like, a month, a year, and so on. We are freaking doing it people!

day 2 no weed

hello, today is my second day fully weed free and it was a very rough morning. i woke up extremely anxious. cried for a while. got upset that my boyfriend has to go to work. cried more, decided i cannot handle being out today so i stayed home. now i’m just sitting here in my messy apartment that i need to clean wondering how i’m gonna get the day started without the constant flow of dopamine i get from hitting the cart, and just from having it with me and knowing i can hit it. my boyfriend asked me why i didn’t wait until my counseling appointment on friday to quit for good. i simply didn’t feel comfortable using my crutch anymore once i decided it was time to quit. i just want this thc out of my system. i want to be normal.

No control

I'm so very irritated right now. This weekend I got too fucked up and decided it's time to quit everything. Also I am getting a new job and may be getting a mouth swab Friday.

At this point I'm going insane between wanting to smoke and not wanting to 😭 I keep stopping myself but I literally hate my life without it. Man I hope this gets better.

On day 2 of quitting

Has anyone had this bad of a reaction?

Upvotes

I quit July 20 abruptly after having edibles for 5 years nightly for sleep. I’m a 39F. I’ve been sent to the ER twice and spent 3 days at a psych ward since then. I have underlying anxiety/depression/insomnia which is why I took the gummies for sleep. I’ve had SI from extreme sleep deprivation. I’m now on a variety of meds working with a psychiatrist to try to stabilize me but I’m so upset about it and keep fighting it and researching and over analyzing and my family and med team are frustrated with me. Even with meds I can barely sleep. My body seems like it’s stuck in a state of hyperarousal. I’m exhausted in every way, yet can’t sleep.

Do I have permanent damage from this abrupt withdrawal? I haven’t been a tiny bit of myself since then. I have a family I need to be able to raise and I’m hardly functional. I’m truly scared for my future. Any words of hope?

Walking myself through throwing away the stuff I just bought

So I just went out and bought weed. I haven't used it. I need to wet it down and throw it away. I just spent $75 on it. But I have to toss it b/c that is the right thing to do. Because I have NEVER been able to "not use." I am going to do this. throw it away. I just want to say that A it sucks and B damn. that is a lot of money a lot of weed to waste. 75 dollars! but I will. C. I need to think long term and remember that this horrible urge to use and rage at the world will abate. I've been rude all day. persnickety. yes, IATAH. I will post in the comments when I have done it. about 2 hrs from now, after work. :-( this sucks

Impostor syndrome for “only being addicted to weed”

I’m one week weed free today and feeling better than I have in a while! One big barrier for quitting was the false notion that because weed is a lighter drug, a dependence or addiction was not a big deal. No matter what your vice is, if it ticks enough boxes (worsening quality of life, choosing a substance over most other things in life, etc) it should be taken seriously as the problem that it is.
Downplaying my addiction feels so stupid in hindsight, especially considering I have lost jobs/relationships because of weed. A good guideline to follow: if you often find yourself thinking about quitting something but keep doing it, chances are it is bad for you. This applies to substances, relationships and habits.
Recognizing if you have addictive tendencies is also very important. If you have an “addictive personality,” odds are you will always be addicted to something. Especially when you first quit a harmful addiction, be mindful of what you choose to fill that vacuum. Personally I just leaned more into art and climbing.

Day 3, smoking all day everyday for about 10 years.

I'm 28. I’ve tried to quit before. Usually by now my skin would be crawling and I’d be looking for scraps to smoke. This time is different; I don’t feel the urge to look for weed anywhere. I'm going to smash my bong with a hammer. My brain feels foggy af. I’ve been journaling, watching TV, and doing chores when I feel restless. I just want to be sober and sane for once.

I was smoking all day everyday for about 10 years. What a waste of my time. It was okay at first – When I was 18 and starting college I only smoked at the occasional party and always with friends. But by the time I was 21, getting high was my main hobby and I did it alone. I should’ve quit a long time ago.

For the first time in my life I can admit that I have a substance problem and I want to get better. Usually if I can't get high I'll get drunk, but I'm going completely sober. The last time I smoked I felt sad, numb, and withdrawn. It felt like my mind was begging me to do something different. I never want to feel so lost again.

Before I was a stoner, I used to read a hundred books a year, had an active social life, was super creative and intelligent. I still believe I’m capable of being the person I used to be. Maybe even smarter this time around.

My partner of 5 years who I live with is still a daily weed user. I don’t mind that they still smoke, but I’m thinking about asking them to only smoke outside and to put away their joints so I don't have access.

Thanks for reading.

Thinking of going to detox/rehab but feel like ppl think I don’t need it cuz it’s just weed

Title says it all. Really think this is truly the only way for me because I have so much coinciding mental illness that goes along with the weed addiction. Anyone have any experience with this?

Day 19 - Round 2 Symptoms

Gave up for the second time 19 days ago and I know for real this time I can never go back. Had been sober for 6 months - so mad at myself for relapsing! Last September I gave up cigs / vapes and weed all at once after daily smoking for over a decade.

Had hoped the withdrawal symptoms wouldn’t be as bad this time since I’d only been smoking weed (no tobacco) for 4/5 months this time, but this week the gastrointestinal stuff has been so fecking annoying.

- have a VERY small appetite (get full so quick and nauseous if I try eat more).
- Heartburn and reflux which then sparks my anxiety and it’s a whole ordeal.
- exhausted very early in the day, even after 7-8 hours sleep
- hyper aware of every body sensation (heart beat/ breathing / my own tongue and swallow )

Now luckily the sleep has been good this time, no bad sweats or insomnia thank god, but the eating stuff is really annoying. Only thing I’m doing to relieve symptoms is mint or ginger tea, and chewable Rennie to relieve the heartburn… but can anyone recommend other solutions? Or even just tell me it will pass!

I had 2 coffees today and learned my lesson - my body is just incapable of processing anything anymore it’s so tiring. Rant over, sorry! Just need to share with people who’d understand.

Struggling to quit THC

Upvotes

I've been vaping THC every day for the past two years. I take in about 1-2 grams daily. I need to quit so my new medication will work well. I've tried quitting before but when I did I would violently shake, sweat a lot and I couldn't stop crying.

So how do I go about quitting without dealing with that...or do I just have to suffer through it?

Week One!

Made it to one week sober (for the umpteenth time) and I am so sweaty 😩 lol trying to remember how uncomfortable I feel so I can stick to my goals of quitting for real this time. Physically I feel awful and can’t sleep, but mentally I feel much better already. 💪🏻 maybe it’s all in my head, but even my face looks less puffy and bloated. Anyone else just starting their quitting journey? We got this. 🙌🏻
