Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub šŸ™ŒšŸ»

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Quick Question Coyote vs ACME Screenings?

Post image
43 Upvotes

I remember months back TGV showed the trailer for this movie and was supposed to come out in late August. I’ve seen people praised it online and seems as though the movie has been released almost everywhere but in Malaysia.

Anyone know why it’s not screening here? I’ve checked both TGV and GSC and supposedly it was to premiere a few days ago per the trailers but no sign of the movie in the apps.

Ask Malaysians What does ā€œbiniā€ mean?

I’ve heard the word being thrown around and when I tried to research I read it means ā€œisteriā€ but informal. Is this true?

We’re a Chinese couple and we once got stopped at a road block. Police officer chatted with my boyfriend and the officer referred to me as ā€œbiniā€. So my bf figured bini must mean ā€œgirlfriendā€ in a casual way.

He refers to me as ā€œbiniā€ whenever speaking to any malay people now… mostly strangers or service staff.

Is his usage correct? He insists it’s how Malay people refer to their girlfriends casually

Quick Question am i too late to start sport?

• Upvotes

F23. i realised i'm slowly getting in the damn rabbit hole and im trying to get my shit together back, mentally and physically.. i start jog and run and sometimes gym and lately i'm feeling like i wanna start tennis, pickleball, golf, etc. i want to make up all the times I've been neglecting myself. i used to do rhythmic gymnastics, and i stopped because i let my feelings get over me (i got solo and i bailed out because i'm shy) and i hate myself enough for it and i don't want to spend my life hating myself and grieving. so am i too late to start sport?

Ask Malaysians paid the taska deposit before i asked how the fees work during the holidays. what else did u only find out after signing

rm250 registration, rm180 deposit, rm650 a month. the part i never asked about is that its billed 12 months, so the two weeks they close for raya and the week they close for cny are still charged in full. nobody hid it from me, its in the paper i signed. i was looking at the monthly figure and skipped that line.

comes out to about rm480 for weeks where the place is shut. the deposit also only comes back if u give one month notice in writing, and a whatsapp message to the teacher doesnt count as writing.

what else is like this ah. the thing u only understand after the money already moved.

Help āš ļø Seeking opinion on ā€œ2nd doctor opinionā€

• Upvotes

Hi all

Not long ago I may have posted something about having influenza last month. Doctor told me it will last 2 weeks and should not go beyond 3 weeks. But in rare cases it can go up to 4 weeks. I am currently at week 5 (half way thru already) and this time the cough and flu came back.

I was on several rounds of antibiotics and 1 round of antivirals…several rounds of cough syrup and a whole lot of other meds as well.

Some 2 weekends back I revisited the doctor and told her my cough isn’t getting better so she said she will give me another round of regular cough and flu meds for a week. If it didn’t improve then to come back for a referral letter for an XRay. The next week (last weekend) I returned to the same clinic but this time it’s a different doctor stationed there. I told her about what the previous doctor said about the referral letter for X-ray. She told me not needed but we can do nebuliser instead, which did improve lung condition for about 1-2 days. But now the cough is back along with flu.

So I visited another doctor yesterday evening and told her about this whole thing, also requesting for X-ray referral letter. She said not needed so gave me some ā€œstronger medsā€ and send me on my way. This round of meds if for about 8 days btw and she told me if this doesn’t get better then to come back for a referral letter for a respiratory doctor. Unsure if I’ve heard her say anything about X-ray or not.

If you’re in my position, will you go for another doctor’s opinion at this rate? Because cannot be cough and flu lasted for 5 weeks and counting right? What should I do in this situation because I really want the cough and flu to go away asap.

Quick Question What moto should I get to be a delivery rider?

I'm 19 years old, and I plan to continue my studies in 2028 to get a diploma. So I still have some time now, but I'm currently working at a small shop that pays RM50 per day. I work 9 hours a day, 6 days a week.

It's very underpaid and below the minimum wage. As far as I know, it's not only full time but also counts as overtime. On top of that, they don't provide EPF or any benefits.

I know I shouldn't stay there for too long, but I live in Perlis, which isn't like KL. Job opportunities here are very limited, and it's hard to find work, especially for someone like me who doesn't have a diploma yet and very little work experience. I also don't have my own car or motorcycle, which limits my options.

So my plan is to keep working at the small shop until I save enough money to buy a motorcycle. After that, I'll quit and become a delivery rider. Then I can work for Shopee or Grab, which should at least pay minimum wage, right? I'm not sure if this plan will work well.

My question is: what motorcycle should I get? Should I get a Honda EX5? Is it a good and reliable motorcycle for a delivery rider, or is there a better option for someone in my situation? should I pay it cash or loan?

idk if my plan will work well, any opinion?

Should I get a car instead? People say buying a car at my stage could become a financial burden, but I'm not sure. I could also use it to work as a driver or do deliveries.

My family doesn't sponsor me, so I have to pay for my own needs, even for my studies, license (I don't have a license yet) and everything. I have to be financially responsible, so please help, I need your answer.

Mildly Menarik An endangered fish only found in Malaysia

Post image
8 Upvotes

Betta chini, Chin’s fighting fish.

Endemic to blackwater peat swamps in west Sabah, and found nowhere else. It is classified as endangered by the IUCN due to habitat destruction as the area is developed and urbanised every day.

However I know some Malaysians who have bred this species in captivity. Males can be recognised by more colourful scales and patterned fins.
They are paternal mouthbrooders.

The scientific name honours the Malaysian ichthyologist Datuk Chin Phui Kong (1923-2016).

Casual Conversation šŸŽ Jewelfish in a clear pond

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The African jewelfish, Hemichromis bimaculatus.

An attractive red cichlid that grows to 15 cm and is native to tropical West Africa in rainforests.

They are extremely aggressive fish that live in pairs. Their violence is turned up during spawning (when they protect their babies), and they can even kill other fish around them.

They feed on shrimp, small fish and insects. Some areas on the West Coast now have a few due to releases by irresponsible aquarists.

It’s basically the album your mak keeps in the plastic bag. The pages we skip. The years that hurt. I left them in, because you can’t love something only on its good days.

Fifteen minutes, on your phone. No login, no ads, nobody paid me. Just a guy with a flag.

If it makes you go ā€œeh, I forgot about thatā€ once, it worked. If it makes you call someone from your past, even better.

And tell me what I missed. Everyone’s album is different.

Dating | Relationship 🌷 Am I being unreasonable for feeling upset about my boyfriend not following through on things he promised?

I’m 27 and my boyfriend is 31. We’ve been dating for a little over a year and a half now, and we’ll be reaching two years next March. We’re in an LDR. We’re both from the same district, but he’s currently working in another district, and it takes around 8 hours of driving to get back to my place. We’re still in the same state, though.

When we first started dating, the first few months were honestly amazing. The chemistry was chemistrying šŸ˜‚ Everything felt perfect. He used to make an effort to come back and take me out at least once a month, even though travelling back isn’t exactly easy. He’s a teacher, so I understand that he has work commitments too.

After around six months, he started slowing down a bit. I brought it up to him, and he told me that he had been feeling burned out and low on energy. I get that. He has ADHD and no family relatives where he's at, and he mostly depended on his friends who according to him there's only one he can really count on. I tried to be understanding, so I told him that I would slow down too and not pressure him.

Eventually, there were periods where he didn’t come back as often, and I started being the one travelling to see him. I’ve visited him twice since we started dating, whereas previously he was usually the one coming to me.

This year, things also became more difficult because flights have gotten expensive. I understood that, but obviously I still missed him. A couple of months ago, I was worried that we wouldn’t get to see each other for a long time because the next school holiday was still several months away, so I decided to pay for my own trip to visit him. I stayed with him for two days.

The thing is, despite all of this, he tells me that he loves me and misses me. When we’re apart, he tells me he’s excited to see me and can’t wait to meet me again. I feel the same way. I really do love this man and I genuinely want a future with him.

We’ve always dated with marriage in mind. When we first started dating, we actually agreed that if we found after a year that we weren’t compatible, we would call it quits. After a year, I asked him where he stood, and he told me that he wanted to stay with me and wanted me to be his wife.

Last year, he told me that if things continued going well, he wanted to meet my parents around December. That didn’t happen.

Earlier this year, I brought up my concerns about marriage because I felt like there wasn’t really any discussion about it from his side. He reassured me and told me that his plan was to come to my house towards the end of this year and masuk meminang me.

Obviously, I was happy to hear that, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much because he has a tendency to make promises and then forget about them.

For example, last year during Raya, he gave me angpau. This year, he told me he would give me angpau again. When Raya came, I asked him about it, and he told me, ā€œAngpau ada, but the ones I have are for kids, so the amount isn’t much. Do you want the kids’ angpau or should I just send it to you through QR?ā€

I told him I wanted the QR one, and he said okay. But Raya ended and I never received anything. I was too embarrassed to ask him about it again because Raya had already passed.

Again, I know it’s a small thing and it’s not about the money. It’s more about the fact that he told me he would do something, but somehow it just never happened.

And then there’s my birthday.

My birthday was in July. Before my birthday, he asked me what I wanted, as we usually do. I told him I honestly didn’t know what I wanted, but that I would really love flowers and a handwritten letter. Those two things were important to me.

He told me he had already booked my flowers and that he would bring them when he came to see me. He also said he had prepared a gift for me and that he would celebrate my birthday with me when we finally met.

So naturally, I got excited.

He did send me a handwritten letter, although he wrote it on his tablet, which I was still happy about because I appreciated the effort.

Today, we finally met again after about two months of not seeing each other.

And... I don't know. I felt really disappointed.

He gave me a small bouquet of flowers, but honestly, it looked like something he had just bought on the way rather than something that had been booked beforehand. There was no proper birthday celebration, no birthday wishes or anything like that.

I asked him about my gift, and he said, ā€œYou told me you didn’t know what you wanted, so I didn’t know what to buy you.ā€

That really hurt me.

Because last year, he bought me a bag and a ring. Which he also asked and I told him I don't know what I want but a ring would be nice. So it’s not like he has never bought me anything before or doesn’t know me at all.

For his birthday this year, I spent around RM800+ on him because I genuinely wanted to make him feel special. I’m not expecting him to spend the same amount on me, and this isn’t really about the money.

It’s about the fact that he told me he had prepared something. He told me he had booked flowers. He told me he would celebrate my birthday with me. So I believed him and looked forward to it.

And then none of that really happened.

I was honestly very upset today. I tried to hide it, but I ended up crying at some point and he didn’t even notice. I feel like I ruined the mood for the day because I couldn’t hide my disappointment.

And now I feel childish for even being upset about it.

I know that some people might say, ā€œIt’s just a birthday giftā€ or ā€œAt least he bought you flowers.ā€ And I understand that. I’m not asking for expensive gifts.

But this isn’t the first time he has made promises and failed to follow through.

At the same time, I genuinely believe he loves me. He tells me he wants me to be his wife. When his mom asked him whether we had discussed taking the relationship to the next stage, he apparently told her that he wanted to wait until he could move to Kuching. He has also consistently been applying for transfers to Kuching, but so far he hasn’t been successful.

So I’m really confused.

I love him. I know he loves me. There are genuinely good things in our relationship.

But I’m starting to wonder whether love is enough when I keep feeling disappointed by his actions.

I would really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from people who have been in long-term relationships or LDRs.

Quick Question Where do you guys usually buy ice?

Random question. When you need a bag of ice, where do you usually get it?

99 Speedmart? KK Mart? Supermarket? Kedai runcit? Kilang ice? Ice lorry?

Also, roughly how much do you normally pay for a bag of ice, and what size is it?

Just curious because I realised I have no idea what the going price for ice is nowadays šŸ˜‚

Ask Malaysians RM300 Speed Summon

Hi all my friend (foreigner) kena speeding summons. The notice says he is required to appear in court. Unfortunately, he only saw the letter recently and completely missed the court date.

Details šŸ‘‡šŸ»

Speed limit: 110 km/h

Recorded speed: 129 km/h

Date of offence: 12 March 2026

Fine: RM300

Court: Magistrates' Court Kuala Kubu Bharu

Court date: 13 July 2026

My questions are:

  1. What happens if you miss the court date?

  2. Is it possible to still pay the RM300 compound, or does it have to go through court now?

  3. Could a missed traffic court date cause problems for a foreigner's visa/immigration status or leaving Malaysia?

  4. If a warrant has been issued, what is the process for resolving it?

Also, I know people sometimes wait for JPJ summons discount campaigns to pay their summonses. Would something like that apply to this case, or is it different because a court date was already issued?

He is kinda freaking out but I don't know how to help bcz I'm not sure how this works šŸ˜…

Any help is appreciated thank you šŸ™šŸ»
