Please try not to use that twat's gifs. That guy is poison to the internet.

3

u/DAS_FX 13h ago

Who is that?

3

u/Pixax_theLotl 11h ago

Benjaminss or some shit, essentially made versions of every popular gif but with himself on them, which is just hyper annoying. Pretty sure he may also have done something else to make the entire internet hate him, but I forget what he did, if anything.

5

u/MuslimCarLover 10h ago

He tries to get the originals removed to replace with his own

3

u/Pixax_theLotl 10h ago

Ah, yeah that would do it. Whats he trying to sell? Most of the time when people do shit like what he's done, they're trying to profit off is it somehow.

4

u/MuslimCarLover 10h ago

Honestly, I don’t know. I think he’s just a moron with some sort of superiority complex

My MIL was sucking on lemons to treat her sore throat that she was causing by sucking on lemons.

u/Wanksters_Paradise 16h ago

The lemon doom loop

5

u/MechanicalTurkish 15h ago

Yeah, there’s no escape from that. RIP OP’s MIL

3

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 2h ago

That would be a great band name though, The Lemon Doom Loop. It could also be a Krofft kids show.

132

u/sayaxat 16h ago

I have no words. WTH?

30

u/Everything_you 15h ago

Yeah- like why 🤔

61

u/bellegroves 15h ago

I would also like to know why. Home reme-don't.

125

u/Beautiful_Lie629 14h ago

My grandmother made homemade cough syrup by mixing 1/3 lemon juice, 1/3 honey, and 1/3 whisky. My mother told me that it worked well! A sleep aid for the kids too! This was around 1930, I suppose they were lucky they weren't given over-the-counter opioids.

130

u/michaelyup 14h ago

That’s a Hot Toddy. Good for what ails ya! Just repeat until you feel no pain.

58

u/alady12 9h ago

You are still sick, but you don't care.

2

u/floorplanner2 3h ago

When my mom was little, she was given Hot Toddies by her German mother. This was in the '30s-'40s and she remembered never really caring that she was sick. She grew up to be a non-drinker, surprisingly enough.

59

u/mellow0324 14h ago

Add steaming hot water to that mix and you have a drink called hot toddy. I swear by it in the winter for colds, sore throats, headaches, etc.

37

u/FreddyNoodles 12h ago

They are excellent. I introduced my Swedish bf to them when he got a really nasty flu one year while we were in Stockholm. He started drinking them just for enjoyment in the winter. They really do help, imo.

5

u/Powerful_Frame_4239 10h ago

My husband gives these the unappetising name of “homemade lemsip”

3

u/Difficult_Ask_1686 9h ago

I’m happy it helps. He probably feels no pain all winter.

19

u/wiscosherm 10h ago

When I was a kid and had a bad cold or sore throat my mom would make a hot toddy heavy on the honey and lighter on the whiskey. I would take about two swallows and and then decide I wanted a nap. She would finish the rest. Looking back on it it was an absolutely brilliant way to get a sick whiny kid to sleep.

5

u/redditcancelculture 9h ago

Y'all's mother's are amateurs.

My mom would give me hot toddy's light on the Whiskey, honey, and water and heavy on the tussin.

It worked so well I slept straight through the divorce.

4

u/LickingSmegma Mamaleek are king 12h ago

You can make an excellent cure for colds and sore throats by carving a funnel out of a radish root and filtering honey through it. The resulting liquid tastes so extraordinarily foul that the body goes belligerently berserk on the illness for fear of getting the evil and depraved treatment again. I hated this atrocity of a concoction without reserve, but it helped every time.

1

u/Flashy_Trash6771 8h ago

Dying!🤣🤣🤣

2

u/multipocalypse 11h ago

If you add a packet of Theraflu, a packet of instant apple cider (lots of vitamin C) and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, it works even better 😆

2

u/donttextspeaktome 10h ago

Add a cinnamon stick for extra flavor

1

u/Ready_Revolution5023 4h ago

We make ours with Throat Coat tea - it’s actually super helpful for my musician husband when he has to perform when he has a sore throat.

5

u/Vegetable-Hand-6770 13h ago

This still works with my kid, i just cut out the lemon and honey.

5

u/Suspicious-Water-973 12h ago

I was at a friends house (many years ago) and was feeling a bit rough. Her mother (French) took pity on me and made me a drink - warm milk, vanilla, little bit of sugar and a large splash of brandy. After that I wasn’t sure if I fancied the mum or the daughter more…

3

u/NoDay4343 12h ago

There is scientific evidence backing up both honey and lemon as cough treatment. It won't cure it but it does soothe it. Alcohol in cough syrups was, I believe, primarily included as a solvent. But the fact is that it can be a sleep aid of sorts (helps you fall asleep but reduces the quality of your sleep), and if a cough is keeping you awake, that's useful. Low quality sleep is better than no sleep. My mother only used the lemon honey, no alcohol, but I can attest that it works surprisingly well. I still use it.

3

u/Clean-Fisherman-4601 12h ago

My mom would give us tea with lemon, honey and whiskey when we had a cold. Having a cold wasn't as unpleasant with that concoction.

2

u/Useful-Emphasis-6787 12h ago

I think gripe water previously had alcohol, given to colic babies. And people used to rub babies gums with alcohol or something when they were teething.

People were truly wild back then.

1

u/Suspicious_Bear42 9h ago

Anecdotal, but I can verify. I'm an 80s baby, and my parents still have the bottle of brandy they used on my gums while I was teething.

1

u/Suspicious-Water-973 2h ago

4-9% alcohol

You can still get something similar for teething (at least in the UK) - Anbesol - lidocaine and alcohol to rub on the gums. There is an adult version as wells

1

u/Accomplished_Will226 11h ago

It still works. Well I would not give kids the whisky but my MIL made the same remedy.

1

u/bookworthy 10h ago

My great-great grandfather had a patented liniment which called for “tincture of opium”. So you might still hurt all over, but maybe you wouldn’t care?

1

u/Any_Poet4127 9h ago

The only OTC opiods around then were weak codeine mixtures and addiction/overdose was a well known phenomena by then so I doubt your great grandmother would give her crazy amounts. There are much worse things you can give someone with a cough 🤷

1

u/Difficult_Ask_1686 9h ago

My grandmother did that in the 70s. She’s from WV.

1

u/tourchy2 8h ago

Double the whiskey and shake with ice and you have a Goldrush

1

u/edgerton2026 7h ago

We were. Paregoric for tummy aches. Made you fell warm all over. 1950s-60s.

1

u/MuchGrounded 7h ago

We were given this growing up. My Dad mixed it up calling it ‘Honey whiskey and lemon’. Yes it did make you sleepy this was in the 70s.

1

u/bellegroves 6h ago

Yeah, my grandma and her teetotaler bestie both kept whiskey on hand for hot toddies. Straight up lemon when your throat is already sore just sounds like torture.

1

u/Born-Substance-1987 5h ago

Whiskey is medicine but when I try to get my FSA to pay for it I suddenly have a problem.

1

u/highknees69 5h ago

Ahh, the Irish cough syrup.

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 4h ago

It was more like, shut these kids up, here take this! My stupid friend use to give her daughter nyquil for the same reason! 🤬

1

u/BravestBlossom 4h ago

My great grandmother had a cough syrup, which is pour peach schnapps into a small (shot) glass, and sip as slowly as possible.

It's perfect. Soothes the throat and chills you out😂😉

1

u/tequila_23_sheila 2h ago

My dad would give me a Hot Toddy as a child. Only thing, alcohol is stimulant for me, so it didn’t put me to sleep. 😅 Today, it’s still the only I go for to set me body straight when all ails me! ☘️✨

u/wannastayhome 31m ago

cough cough ...cough cough… 🍋 🍯 🥃

u/Aleja72 26m ago

Mine too! It totally works 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

u/Former_Matter49 7m ago

My grandma poured this same recipe into hot tea. She called it the Two Hat Cure. You put your hat on the bedpost, lie back, and sip tea until you see two hats. LOL

You can tell it's an older cure. Who has a hat and a bedpost? Still works though

1

u/LeatherPurple9284 2h ago

You had me thinking the original word was remedo. >:(

1

u/Beneficial_Put1771 2h ago

Make LEMONadE , it’s the adage

3

u/peonyseahorse 11h ago

My mil eroded the enamel off of her teeth too. Her dentist was shocked. Mil had some bright idea that drinking squeezed lemon with hot water was healthy. As usual she always goes overboard with her crazy health fads thinking that more is better. She has also literally turned orange before from drinking too much carrot juice.

2

u/MizzPizz 14h ago

This made my night. Thank you. 🙏

2

u/zenoob 12h ago

Lemonsatemyface

2

u/FigMassive4505 11h ago

I think older people have this idea that some foods, like lemons or honey or oranges, are a universal antidote

2

u/Accomplished_Will226 11h ago

Now that’s funny!

2

u/HallucinateZ 9h ago

I do this but with cigarettes & a cough. It’s perfect.

2

u/someolbulshit 8h ago

It's like me drinking to solve the problems that the bottle brought me.

u/digitalclock1 8h ago

u/SpaceGypsy27 17h ago

And the lining of your stomach

18

u/Boring_Intern_6394 14h ago

Stomach acid is waaaay stronger than lemon juice. It has a pH as low as 1.5, which is strong enough to cause chemical burns on skin.

I don’t see how lemon juice could cause issues in the one body part specifically adapted for high acidity

4

u/DedTV 14h ago

You add acidic substances to your stomach, your stomach releases more acid to digest it, eventually the natural acid regulation system gets overwhelmed, upward pressure increases the risk of reflux, and you risk stomach and esophageal ulcers and gastritus. Acidic foods can also relax the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing the risk of reflux and esophageal damage.

6

u/Boring_Intern_6394 13h ago

In unhealthy individuals, maybe. But in healthy individuals, stomach pH is tightly regulated via homeostatic systems, excess acidity is able to be buffered and the sphincter keeps stomach contents in the stomach.

Citric acid is a weak acid so responds well to a buffer system and because it is a weak acid, the stomach lining is well protected against it, as the tissue is evolved to deal with the strong acids used for digestion. The pH of lemon juice remains the same (2-3) whether you have 1mL or 1L and a healthy stomach can easily deal with pH 1.5 acidity.

It may aggravate pre-existing issues, but is unlikely to cause them.

1

u/Stephen_Is_handsome Stephen Harris 13h ago

Does the lemons help with his thoat?

1

u/Herredness16 12h ago

If I have herd it will

1

u/BubiMannKuschelForce 13h ago

You can easily get a sore throat thru lemons or sour candy.

5

u/Boring_Intern_6394 12h ago

Your oesophagus is not the one body part specifically adapted for high acidity

1

u/BubiMannKuschelForce 5h ago

As a chemist I can asure you that lemon juice at a pH of 2 CAN irritate your throat.

We never talked about caustic destruction.

1

u/cuntybunty73 16h ago

And get a stomach ache with acid reflux 😭

1

u/Tiny-Reading5982 15h ago

Yeah I was addicted to oranges one year and ended up with a cavity on one of my front teeth which has never happened before.

1

u/Fall_Water 8h ago

That's terrible, I'm so sorry. I love anything acidic, but my skin does not- horrible deep acne... even at 39

1

u/RedToast711 15h ago

thats not enough at all dude unless maybe there using lemons almost like a retainer

1

u/Fall_Water 8h ago

Or have an existing condition where they have weak enamel

1

u/Snuffles689 14h ago

I rarely got sick, but the enamel on my front teeth suffered greatly.

1

u/anondreamitgirl 11h ago

Equally she may turn into a lemon 🍋

1

u/Apart_Ad9308 11h ago

I can say yes. My brother used to eat saladitos stuck in half a lemon. Almost ruined his teeth. A saladito is a salted, dried plum.

2

u/Fall_Water 8h ago

That sounds delicious

2

u/Apart_Ad9308 5h ago

They are.

1

u/IdRatherProlaspe 6h ago

I did this with lemon head candy. I get really bad cotton mouth and would keep em in my cheek. They destroyed my bottom molars.

1

u/m05hm05h 4h ago

Well, mix it with gin and tonic water.

1

u/Level_Abrocoma8925 3h ago

Worth it to avoid scurvy.

1

Scurvy terrifies me because I have ALOT of scars. If they open up I may actually just fall apart. Or at least my insides would become my outsides. Not a first but still unpleasant

1

Urrggghhhh that is- that is tart! That is really tart. I mean does my scar look like a dog's vagina? You know, maybe, I don't know, I'm not going to sit here and try to get inside the mind of a dog! I mean that's God's work. Well, not that I believe in God, I don't. Not since that chinaman stole my kidney.

Exactly, gotta keep the vitamin C levels up somehow 😂

1

I actually know a guy who got scurvy a couple years ago. He basically didn't eat food. Just drank soda for a month straight.

Canuck here, I had a boyfriend from Kenya who didn't eat much produce (He is Massai) and thought we were nuts with the scurvy issue. We had a good laugh when my friend asked how they prevented it and the boyfriend succinctly told her "we eat chicken!" Friend was confused and replied with "so the chickens drink orange juice?". It was one of those times when you forget how different life can be throughout the world. I loved in being the audience for this conversation.
