It reminds me of how my mom would randomly stock up on an item even though she had a lot at home. This was at the start of her dementia.

Thanks for this. My mom is 44, I guess it could be a mental health issue, but they were like $15 bucks so she brought them home. This was supposed to be a light hearted thing

Yooooo, one of my children used that term ones (specifically "That's a lot of dollarbucks") and it's been my personal head cannon ever since. There are literally dozens of us.

For $15 that will make a shitload of lemon marmalade, lemon flavored liquers, lemon flavored pastries, frozen lemon juice cubes. etc.

Anyway, if she does that often with stuff like this and you guys have a garage etc I would recommend buying a large chest freezer if possible. I garden a lot and get similar tier produce gluts seasonally, and have to process them to storage. Those freezers alongside assorted types of baggies work amazing for that.

It usually ends up getting used but it’s always been items we could eat easily such as eggs, oranges, strawberries, etc. the lemons were a shock for sure

I say go with it. Lemons in the summer end, hard to go wrong, mix some up for lemonade, add other whole fruits etc...Citrus is a good source of vitamin c and antioxidants. If she doesn't mind squeezing half into juice, freeze it up into batches either to use in flavoring water in the winter. The pies and other contributions of use are perfectly fine as well, sorbet and sherbet to try or iced lemon. Shoot I'm getting hungry thinking about it too.

Is she doing a fad diet by any chance? I'm her age and roughly 20 years ago there was the "lemonade diet", for which you needed a fuckton of lemons or lemon juice.

edit: my second guess is ADHD which I also have and can attest to doing random shit on a whim bc it sounds like a really good idea at the time

As someone with ADHD and a psych degree, this looks like textbook ADHD more than anything lol. I'm envisioning your mom seeing this amazing deal on lemons, knowing how nice lemons are, and dreaming of all the delicious lemon flavored things you're all going to make/eat with them.

I’ve known two people who shopped like this so far in my lifetime and both were extremely unwell mentally. “A good sale” was a frequent response (among a few others) to why. No thought between good deal and impracticality/how to use.

One of the most dramatic examples is them buying probably a thousand bananas for their family of 5 to eat all summer.

Probably something that gave her an idea via social media. If the OP has asked mom what's going on and if the point leads with something reasonable, then we'll be less worried. If she's 44 then an impulse buy might have happened or 10 cents a lemon, which isn't anything near terrible.

I mean.. I use lemons almost every day so for some folks this isn’t exactly some weird out of the ordinary thing. Perhaps OP’s mom likes to cook or make things. I mean, I get it. I’ve bought twenty lemons and a dozen limes a week.

Is this a lot? Totally. But for $15 I probably would have bought them, too lol. I’d of seen lemonade, juice for Vietnamese dipping sauce (though I do prefer limes for that) preserved lemons for Mediterranean dishes, what have you.

Im just jealous of her fridge space.

I feel like if my boyfriend comes across this thread he’s gonna know exactly who I am 😂

Looking at their condition, they appear to be home grown lemons. People with lemon trees in my area beg people to come and take their massive excess of lemons every season. Not unreasonable that someone might have had a large tree harvest and been like “please somebody take these I’m drowning in lemons” and OP’s mom was like fuck it. I’d happily take 150 free lemons. Idk what I’d do with them all but that’s later me’s problem

No, and you’re absolutely overreaching here. Even more so if you have a narrow window of culinary experience. My partner would be annoyed at our lack of kitchen space or how I always think I have more time and focus for some things I just dive head first into, but he wouldn’t contact my psychiatrist or therapist over it.

Quite well. She’s currently having a blast in (a country with lots of history).

You’re right, I don’t know your situation. But you said she’s addicted to buying. Addiction is a mental health issue. Most people wouldn’t go out and buy 150 lemons. And since you posted this on /r/mildlyinfuriating, you’ve given us the impression that this isn’t okay.

But I’m not a therapist and I meant no harm when I said that perhaps there’s an underlying issue there. I was just trying to gently tell you that maybe you should look out for certain signs like this and if the issue escalates, perhaps you two should have a conversation.

It’s your mom and based on your comments, you clearly care about her. I care deeply about my mom too and I’d personally be a little worried. But that’s just me and this clearly is none of my business. Again, I was just trying to help.

Buying things you have no need or use for, for no other reason than because they are on sale, is a compulsive shopping issue. The thing about reddit is that we're all strangers but we're strangers from all walks of life and diverse fields of study and employment. A lot of us don't know what we're talking about but a lot of us do. It might not seem bad now, hell it might not ever get worse than this. We don't know because we aren't her doctor. But the point is that you should at least talk to her about it and she should at least talk to a professional about it. This is a sign of a potentially serious issue.
