Article MTGO Modern Breakdown: Prowess takes four trophies and the Spotlight, Goryo's Vengeance reaches twenty Top 8s at 37% conversion, Esper Blink goes 26 for 26 online and misses paper

edit: u/hsiale and u/Brunnun pointed out that the Esper deck in second place is, in fact, Esper Blink, not Goyro. I can't change the post title, and it doesn't change much, but I edited the whole metagame breakdown to align with the data. My mistake I should check data more carefully.

Another traditional metagame breakdown here, in this window I look up into, 26 Challenges plus one large paper tournament inside the same two weeks. I do not have complete data from the tournament, but I do what I can with what I can get. If you have access to more detailed data, let me know! It will be cool to be able to access CSV files from Spotlight.

As I expected last week, Prowess became the largest deck on MTGO at 10%, but it is also the largest deck in Brisbane at 13%, and won the paper event in the hands of Jefferson Lee. The largest surprise of the event was (or maybe I should say wasn’t) Esper Blink, second deck on MTGO with 10% of the field and four trophies, was at most 16 of 573 decks in Brisbane. It is cool to be able to compare big paper events with my MTGO data and find they are quite similar; the more I learn about the meta, the more accurate information I can deliver to all of you.

As always, for anyone who wants the video version with my commentary, here is the YouTube link. If you prefer text with the full charts and figures, it is all on my Substack. I post on X most days, too, mostly league results and smaller data bits that don't make it into the weekly write-up.

TL;DR

  • Izzet Prowess won Magic Spotlight in Brisbane, 573 decks, while Esper Blink is second
  • Three decks won 12 of the 26 trophies: Prowess 4, Esper Blink 4, Goryo's Vengeance 4
  • Boros Energy no trophies, Top 8 in 2 of 26 events, conversion 11%, where a field median is 29%
  • Combo is the largest archetype at 24% of meta, but has lower conversion than median (21 vs 29%)
  • Aggro and Graveyard get 6 trophies each, from 23% and 17% of the meta
  • Control conversion is  15%, it was present in 8 of 26 Top 8, and won one trophy
  • Goryo's Vengeance conversion 37%, highest among the top five decks
  • Ramp delta +92pp, highest of the seven, Top 8 in 14 of 26 events and 2 trophies

Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit, Brisbane (paper, outside the Challenge pool)

  • Cream the la cream of this breakdown, so here are some numbers about this event.
  • Players compete in Modern Constructed, 2026-08-28 to 2026-08-30 in Brisbane Convention Centre
  • Tournament gathered 573 decks on day one, which translated into 132 on day two, overall day 1 to day 2 conversion 23%
  • On day 1, Players have to complete 9 rounds of Swiss and get 18 match points to go to day two
  • On day two, they play 6 rounds and a Top 8
  • The whole event was won by Jefferson Lee on Izzet Prowess, His score was 15-2-1 including the Top 8
  • In the Top 8 we also see the following decks:  Izzet Prowess, Esper Blink, Azorius Loki, Mono-Green Broodscale, Boros Land Destruction, Gruul Broodscale, Grixis Affinity, Izzet Affinity. So Affinity and Broodscale (different flavors but still) get half of the Top 8!
  • Izzet Prowess was 13% of day one, and it was the largest deck in the paper field, similar to on MTGO
  • Esper Goryo's got 8% on day one and 11% on day two, with conversion at 33%, it was the best of the tournament in my opinion, and this also stays in line with MTGO data, where it is the overall best modern deck right now
  • Ruby Storm (5%) and Eldrazi Tron (4%) of day one, both have conversion under 13%
  • Boros Energy 4% of meta on both days, with conversion at 23%, was absent in the Top 10
  • Azorius Loki in third, an archetype that I have seen in my data for some time, but it was always below the Universe A cut line.

This window in numbers

  • 26 Challenges, 4 tiers: C64 x16, C96 x4, C16 x3, C32 x3
  • Universe A (encounter probability at or above 5%): 24 decks, Universe B: 43 decks. So Universe B is almost two times larger then A.
  • Median delta +57pp, median conversion 29%
  • 13 different decks took the 26 trophies, three of them win 4 four trophies!
  • Trophy split by archetype: Aggro 6, Graveyard 6, Combo 5, Blink 4, Midrange 2, Ramp 2, Control 1
  • 473 pilots in Challenge Top 32, 24 of them with a one trophy, two with two

Combo

  • meta 23.63%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 20/26
  • trophies 5
  • conv 21%
  • delta +76.4pp
  • Win/Top32 3%
  • WR 49% (95% CI 47 to 51, n=2177)

Second window in a row, the combo has the highest presence in a meta but the lowest conversion. I have two ideas why, one is the same as one week ago, the archetype is large, a lot of inexperienced players play, and it dilutes the results. Second, show up because this low conversion rate is constant; the metagame may adapt to Combo decks and develop strategies in other decks that allow it to beat Combo decks more often. This situation may lead to a drop in combo popularity in the next few weeks because combo newcomers will leave the archetype in favor of winning decks like Prowess or Blink.

Broodscale Combo | Combo | Neutral | Trend: Rising

  • meta 8.38%
  • Top32 24/26
  • Top8 12/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 23%
  • delta +83.9pp
  • Win/Top32 3%
  • WR 48% (95% CI 44 to 52, n=723)

Broodscale is now the largest Combo deck in the format, but I noticed that it has fallen off in conversion and is more to the left side of WR. It is probably the effect of the popularity that causes this deck to look like a simple construction to play and win on a spot. I believe that Broodscale numbers do not support that. Two trophies show that decks are powerful constructions, but low conversion relative to its large meta share is a sign that it is not a pick-and-win deck.

Devoted Combo | Combo | Neutral | Trend: Falling

  • meta 6.17%
  • Top32 23/26
  • Top8 10/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 26%
  • delta +82.3pp
  • Win/Top32 4%
  • WR 53% (95% CI 49 to 57, n=599)

A little bit over 6% of metashare, so the most popular deck of the format from two weeks ago is falling in popularity. But still got two trophies, has a very solid WR with low CI at 49%, and solid conversion. So my theory is that good players who master the deck stick with it, and the current deck metrics reflect a player base that has shed the dead weight of weak players who constantly switch to a new popular meta deck.

Ruby Storm | Combo | Challenge Overperformer | Trend: Falling

  • meta 2.44%
  • Top32 16/26
  • Top8 5/26
  • trophies 1
  • conv 30%
  • delta +59.1pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 52% (95% CI 46 to 58, n=227)

Last week, we talked about Strom on Substack, and this is not a metagame where this deck is a good choice. As we can see in this window, the deck makes a small surprise and wins a trophy. It is some kind of tradition here that I talk about one deck not being great, and then it gets a good run. Despite that deck having solid conversion and WR, I will not consider this as a sign that the meta is more Storm-friendly; it's rather a one-shot run. If those results persist over the next 2-4 weeks, it might be a sign that something has changed.

Aggro

  • meta 22.83%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 22/26
  • trophies 6
  • conv 25%
  • delta +77.2pp
  • Win/Top32 3%
  • WR 50% (95% CI 48 to 52, n=2127)

Second archetype of the format, Aggro is solidifying its hold on second place, and, following Izzet Prowess's recent results in the Spotlight Series, I expect it to make a run for the top spot. Six trophies, presence in all challenge top 32, and 26 T8 shows that aggro is in a counterattack.

Prowess | Aggro | Challenge Overperformer | Trend: Rising

  • meta 10.48%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 18/26
  • trophies 4
  • conv 30%
  • delta +89.5pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 52% (95% CI 49 to 55, n=1014)

So we're back in a place where Aggro deck is the biggest deck in a format. Prowess has some trouble sometimes, but now, in this meta, it is a great choice. I expect Prowess to be the deck to beat in modern for most players. Especially after the Spotlight Series, I would not recommend this deck for new players, as there will be a lot of hate here. Deck got four trophies, over the median conversion, and was present in all T32 and almost 70% of T8 challenges. Combine it with a really solid WR from over 1000 game samples, and you have a deck that is everywhere and wins a lot. This is a MUST to prepare for in the next two weeks. It will be fun to see how the metagame will adapt to this killing machine.

Affinity | Aggro | Neutral | Trend: Rising

  • meta 4.07%
  • Top32 18/26
  • Top8 6/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 23%
  • delta +65.2pp
  • Win/Top32 6%
  • WR 51% (95% CI 46 to 56, n=355)

Second Aggro deck has 4% of metashare and its rising in popularity. Fair WR and low conversion but two trophies. Affinity enters T8 six times, so it is not impressive, but two trophies from such a small presence is something that gets my attention. Might it be that a slight metashift makes a window for Affinity players to sneak into the top and close the runs? Also, we have not seen much Affinity recently, so people are unprepared and focusing on other decks. It is worth observing because if these metrics remain at this level or start to rise, we could see Affinity return to the metagame.

Boros Energy | Aggro | Neutral | Trend: Falling

  • meta 3.49%
  • Top32 17/26
  • Top8 2/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 11%
  • delta +61.9pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 44% (95% CI 38 to 50, n=297)

Boros has quite a hard time right now, lost a lot of meta share, does not have the best WR, has poor conversion, and has no trophies. I believe that bans and a metagame shift take out Boros energy from the top for a long time, and I'm not sure if it will ever return. On top now we had faster decks (Prowess) and those with better late game (Blink, Goyro’s). Right now, we can observe a rise of Jeskai Energy, a Boros variant with blue splash for Quantum Riddler. Jeskai version won the premier event two weeks ago and is becoming more and more visible in the data. Energy needs Riddler to be able to compete in the midgame and avoid being out-grinded by decks with better card draw. The cost of explosiveness and speed is real. That makes me think that if Boros Energy is splashing additional color to have access to Riddler, isn't that a sign that this card is heavily warping the metagame in its favor? We see Riddler in many, many decks right now, and it looks like the most powerful creature in modern right now.

Graveyard

  • meta 16.65%
  • Top32 25/26
  • Top8 20/26
  • trophies 6
  • conv 30%
  • delta +79.5pp
  • Win/Top32 4%
  • WR 51% (95% CI 48 to 53, n=1618)

Great conversion and six trophies show that the Graveyard strategy is still super powerful and can give a good pilot extraordinary results. But Graveyard loses some metashare to Aggro and now is the third archetype in the field.

Goryo's Vengeance | Graveyard | Challenge Overperformer | Trend: Falling

  • meta 8.73%
  • Top32 25/26
  • Top8 20/26
  • trophies 4
  • conv 37%
  • delta +87.4pp
  • Win/Top32 6%
  • WR 53% (95% CI 50 to 56, n=867)

The best deck in a format (in my opinion) continues its march. It loses some metashare from last week, but it is not something to worry about. Great conversion, the best in the top decks, great WR with low CI at 50% (!), four trophies, and presence in almost all challenges T32. Also, it has the best conversion into Day Two. This shows how powerful this deck is. I expect its popularity to rise after the spotlight, along with its prowess. The falling signal is mostly due to small falls and probably some players transitioning into prowess or Esper, but it is not noticeable enough to worry about.

Living End | Graveyard | Neutral | Trend: Stable

  • meta 3.38%
  • Top32 17/26
  • Top8 6/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 25%
  • delta +62.0pp
  • Win/Top32 7%
  • WR 50% (95% CI 45 to 55, n=320)

Living End is a perfect example of how mastering a single deck can yield extraordinary results. Living End, as an overall deck, does not look like the best choice: below-median conversion, a small amount of top8, and coin-flip WR. It is also below 4% meta share deck, but in the hands of a skilled pilot, MeninoNey, was able to be the top Player in my challenge league table (sure, it is a short period of time and the test season, but still look at his stats!), which you might find in here: Modern Pilot League. Congrats to MeninoNey and his persistence in playing one pet deck.

4c HollowOne | Graveyard | Neutral | Trend: Rising

  • meta 2.91%
  • Top32 15/26
  • Top8 5/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 21%
  • delta +54.8pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 47% (95% CI 41 to 53, n=262)

This deck saw the biggest jump in metagame share from 0.4% in W33 to 2.9%. But below median conversion, not a great win rate doesn't bode well for the future at the moment for this deck.

Midrange

  • meta 11.41%
  • Top32 25/26
  • Top8 18/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 26%
  • delta +84.7pp
  • Win/Top32 2%
  • WR 47% (95% CI 44 to 50, n=1102)

Midrange is basically without major changes in this window. Fewer than expected trophies, but a fair presence in T32 and T8. Conversion 3pp below the median and winrate with a higher CI on 50%. It is like ok-ish but as it is my favorite archetype I always expect more from it.

Domain Zoo | Midrange | Neutral | Trend: Stable

  • meta 2.68%
  • Top32 16/26
  • Top8 6/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 27%
  • delta +58.9pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 47% (95% CI 41 to 53, n=235)

Zoo is now at about 3% market share, which aligns with Spotlight data. Conversion is below median; WR from a not-a-great sample is toward the left, so a losing side rather than a winning one. As a whole, Midrange archetype Zoo struggles in the current metagame. I believe that it is time to reconsider the deck, and as I talk on my YT ad DKT to a list again because of Esper dominance. Also, Clarion Conqueror seems like a nice addition to the main board. Still waiting for a trophy!

Dimir Midrange | Midrange | Neutral | Trend: Falling

  • meta 2.33%
  • Top32 14/26
  • Top8 9/26
  • trophies 1
  • conv 48%
  • delta +51.5pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 47% (95% CI 41 to 53, n=249)

Again, Dimir Midrange wins a trophy, with a high conversion rate, but lower than Zoo's presence in T32, but higher in Top8, suggesting that this deck has experienced pilots who play it often, and when they go into a challenge, they go to T8. Still has the same problem as the whole Midrange: probably can't keep up against top-deck card advantage or the speed of Prowess. The last one is probably quite hard MU for Dimir players. Maybe we have some here to tell us what struggles the most in the current meta?

Mono-Black Midrange | Midrange | Neutral | Trend: Stable

  • meta 1.16%
  • Top32 12/26
  • Top8 4/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 33%
  • delta +45.0pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 54% (95% CI 45 to 62, n=129)

Just a little bit over 1% deck, the best in 1% decks' presence in T8. Solid conversion, but in such a low field share, treat it like an artifact, not solid data. This deck shows up from time to time. Quite a nice off-meta construction that proves you don’t have to go with high metadeck to make solid scores.

Blink

  • meta 10.36%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 15/26
  • trophies 4
  • conv 29%
  • delta +89.6pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 55% (95% CI 52 to 58, n=936)

One deck archetype, other variants like BW Blink are below 0.5%, so I will do a longer discussion in a deck chapter rather than here.

Esper Blink | Blink | Challenge Overperformer | Trend: Rising

  • meta 10.01%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 15/26
  • trophies 4
  • conv 31%
  • delta +90.0pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 55% (95% CI 52 to 58, n=896)

So here we are with a rising star of the Modern Metagame. All stats for this deck are extraordinary: four trophies, above the median WR, conversion, and Delta. If you look more closely, you will notice that this deck has a lower CI of 52%! And this is wild, especially that sample came from almost 900 games. It is also a second deck in a whole field. If this continues next week, I will call it the best deck in modern. It was also second in Spotlight, but as an archetype, it was not that much present in the field. I think it is because the paper metagame shifts much more slowly, and top players choose well-known and established decks. I expect that Esper Blink will rise a lot after the second place, and we will see a lot of copies in the next tournament.

Ramp

  • meta 7.57%
  • Top32 26/26
  • Top8 14/26
  • trophies 2
  • conv 26%
  • delta +92.4pp
  • Win/Top32 3%
  • WR 51% (95% CI 47 to 54, n=808)

Ramp is doing ok, solid WR, two trophies, and presence in all of 26 T32. Conversion is below median but not much. It is a solid archetype, but nothing spectacular happening in here for a long time. I don’t know why, because all the metrics say Ramp is a solid choice to play. Maybe I don't expect it to be one of the top 3 archetypes, but it deserves a higher metashare. I think I need to merge all Tron lists, cause sure, they differ a little in the card list, but the idea is the same, and this gives less granularity in the archetype.

Mono-Green Eldrazi | Ramp | Neutral | Trend: Falling

  • meta 2.33%
  • Top32 13/26
  • Top8 6/26
  • trophies 1
  • conv 30%
  • delta +47.7pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 54% (95% CI 48 to 60, n=254)

Mono green Eldrazi is probably the best ramp deck right now, but has only about 2% of metashare. It wins one trophy, has a really good conversion rate, and a solid win rate with a lower CI at 48%. Also, from 13 T32 it gets six T8, which is a really good score.

Tron | Ramp | Neutral | Trend: Rising

  • meta 1.98%
  • Top32 9/26
  • Top8 4/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 31%
  • delta +32.6pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 49% (95% CI 42 to 56, n=199)

Tron has the lowest presence in T32 among all decks, with over 2% metashare in the format. No trophies and 4 T8. So if we look, we can see that if Tron reaches T32, it has a good chance of getting into T8. It suggests that this deck has a small group of experienced players who play well and can deliver a good score.

Eldrazi Tron | Ramp | Neutral | Trend: Falling

  • meta 1.63%
  • Top32 11/26
  • Top8 2/26
  • trophies 0
  • conv 13%
  • delta +40.7pp
  • Win/Top32 0%
  • WR 43% (95% CI 35 to 51, n=146)

Low conversion and WR (from a small sample) and only two T8 entries. It was not a great week for E-Tron.

Control

  • meta 5.93%
  • Top32 23/26
  • Top8 8/26
  • trophies 1
  • conv 15%
  • delta +82.5pp
  • Win/Top32 2%
  • WR 47% (95% CI 43 to 52, n=515)

Not a great week for control, very low conversion, and a WR that might be a lot better. Control is right now the smallest archetype. I remember that during the dominance of Jeskai Blink and Boros, their control was also in trouble. It is not as bad as it was, but I expect that Esper Blink and Prowess may push out control again.

Land Destruction | Control | Challenge Overperformer | Trend: Rising

  • meta 2.56%
  • Top32 16/26
  • Top8 6/26
  • trophies 1
  • conv 30%
  • delta +59.0pp
  • Win/Top32 5%
  • WR 53% (95% CI 47 to 59, n=228)

Only control deck above 5% ecounter rate threshold.  We also need to remember that it is not a typical control deck; it attacks the mana base, and, given how fragile mana is in this format, that explains why it is the only control deck that gets a trophy. I wonder if Prowess will become a reason that helps push LD out of the metagame. It seems quite resilient against mana attacks. Unfortunately, LD was in a T8 in Spotlight, so we can expect a rise in popularity of this deck.

Premier events

We have one premier event in this window, a Showcase Challenge. Winer was Rastaf with Esper Blink, and other T8 were: Ruby Storm, Goryo's Vengeance, Goryo's Vengeance, Devoted Combo, Affinity, Belcher, Ruby Storm. In the whole T32 of the event, we have Esper Blink and Eldrazi, 5 copies each, and Goryo's Vengeance, 4. Ruby Strom is a surprise because it takes two T8 slots, and the presence of Belcher is interesting.

Pilots

  • 473 pilots in Challenge Top 32 across 26 events
  • 24 pilots took a trophy, 22 of them exactly one
  • 2 pilots with two trophies: MeninoNey on Living End, jussupinator on Goryo's Vengeance
  • jussupinator AvgPlace 2.3 from 3 Top 32 entries, best average in the window
  • MeninoNey 9 Top 32 entries, 5 Top 8, the deepest runs of the window
  • 8 pilots reached 3 or more Top 8
  • no pilot won with two different decks this window

On the Radar (Universe B, below 5% encounter, present in Challenges)

  • 5c Midrange: meta 0.12%, Top32 1/26, Top8 1/26, 1 trophy, WR 59% (95% CI 40 to 76, n=25). Quite an interesting list, still I will not expect to see much more of this list in future challenges. It looks quite hard to pilot.
  • Amulet Titan: meta 1.05%, Top32 8/26, Top8 0/26, trophies 0, WR 41% (95% CI 32 to 51, n=93). Amulet Titan players are still present in metagame, but not doing great. Spotlight Series data confirms that.
  • Azorius Control: meta 0.81%, Top32 8/26, Top8 0/26, trophies 0, WR 43% (95% CI 32 to 55, n=65)
  • Kethis Combo: meta 0.23%, Top32 2/26, Top8 1/26, trophies 0, WR 48% (95% CI 30 to 66, n=26)
  • Simic Tron: no league presence at all, Top32 2/26, Top8 1/26, trophies 0. Rouge construction that made quite a deep run.
  • Song of Creation: no league presence at all, Top32 1/26, Top8 1/26, trophies 0. I see this deck time to time in leagues, but no 5-0 in recent times, as far as I know.

Trophy distribution, all 26

  • Prowess 4, Esper Blink 4, Goryo's Vengeance 4
  • Affinity 2, Devoted Combo 2, Broodscale Combo 2, Living End 2
  • Eldrazi Ramp 1, Land Destruction 1, Mono-Green Eldrazi 1, Dimir Midrange 1, Ruby Storm 1, 5c Midrange 1
  • 13 different decks, three of them with 4
  • archetype split: Aggro 6, Graveyard 6, Combo 5, Blink 4, Midrange 2, Ramp 2, Control 1

So, as we all can see, the metagame is changing; we have three Tier 1 decks, and the rest try to beat them. Is this a healthy state or do you rather like this wild mete after the bans? I'm a little afraid that the success of those three decks will cause them to go even higher in meta share, and we will end up in a metagame where 70% of the meta is those three decks. We will see in the upcoming weeks. Thanks for reading all of this 😊

Card Discussion [FRA] Solitary Cell

RW

Artifact

When this artifact enters, exile target nonland permanent an opponent controls with mana value 3 or less until this artifact leaves the battlefield.

1, {T}, Discard a legendary card: Draw a card.

Immediately makes me think of [[Key to the Side-Door]] which I saw people experimenting with. I remember seeing this thread from two weeks ago discussing it. So maybe worth looking at this one?

So in comparison, RW instead of 1 is obviously quite a bit more mana. Also means you can't fetch off an Urza's Saga. And drawing 1 card is less than 2 cards.

But you do get a removal spell to impact the board immediately. Which I think is valuable. I'm not sure if that's enough to make Solitary Cell comparable to Key to the Side-Door. Probably not worth it?

Deck Discussion Budget Affinity Deck

ok so obviously i wont be hitting the big leagues with this list, but i do want to take it to an upcoming modern fnm this friday. this is a modified version of my value vintage list to make it legal for modern. that being said, there are 2 artifact creatures im thinking of possibly adding: etched champion and frogmyr enforcer. alongside those is the 3 cost artifact called firdoch core which taps for any mana. I'd like some general recommendations here. if i go with the frogmyrs i will replace my mistvaults with the izzet bridges, as I also have them in my collection.

Here is the link to the deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/632ojmKyG02V-5_uxhnHdg

EDIT: I have made some changes based on some feedback and the deck looks a lot more stable.

Choose one -

-Target creature has base power and toughness 1/1 until end of turn.

-Target creature has base power and toughness 4/5 until end of turn.

Seems like a contender in Izzet Prowess flex slots. We've seen an effect similar to this before in Secret Identity, but I think the additional bump in P/T for the second mode is significant. Furthermore, the fact that you can use the 1/1 mode on an opponent's creature is a big deal since now you don't feel defeated seeing an opposing Sire of Seven Deaths across the board on turn 3 in game 1 since you can now mitigate the lifelink, kill it via combat or at the very least, kill it with a lava dart.

Boros Ponza Spotlight series Update

Hello Everyone,

I hope you guys are doing well this Monday afternoon. I woke up with a certain pep in my step because of the amazing work Simon put at the spotlight series this past weekend. Boros Land destruction took one of those coveted top 8 slots for the event with a very solid record. I wanted to talk a little about my thoughts on the deck and the choice to main board those Relics.

Let me know what you guys think,
Jericho

P.s. Simon if you are out there. Good shit man. I’ll buy you a soda if i ever meet you in person king.

Note: Let me know how this new way of getting you guys the writeups. I made a new google account to accommodate the pdfs.

Deck Discussion How viable are budget decks?

Basically what the title says. My LGS is fairly small (most times we have 8-10 players), but everyone has top tier decks. I have a 40 dollars mono green stompy (yeah the one from almost 10 years, but with some small changes) and most times i lose (obviously). But looking at mtg goldfish there are some intresting budget decks such as bogles (i play it on pauper), necro ooze combo and some other fun shenigans. Are they any good? Or is it better to save money to build a top tier deck ? Keep in mind im not american so cards are more costly around here

Are we at a point where should unban Amped Raptor?

Given how far and how fast Boros Energy has fallen, is it time to unban Amped Raptor? Energy lost Jegantha, The One Ring, Amped Raptor and Phlage since the release of MH3, and Phlage was clearly papering over lots of flaws in that deck.

Given the explosive starts other aggro decks have (Prowess, Affinity) and that one of Wizard's goals with MH3 was to have at least one viable go-wide creature deck, I think it's time we unban Amped Raptor and let energy do what it was designed to do.

Modern Heartless Summoning - Looking for advice

Hi everyone,

Long-time lurker here at this subreddit. I am wanting some help for my Heartless Summoning brew. Heartless Summoning is one of my all-time favorite cards, and I had multiple decks when it was legal in standard. I had a Grand Architect + big artifacts deck, and also a sultai reanimator brew with Havengul lich. I wanted to continue playing the deck in modern and I have been tuning this list for a long time now.

Let me preface by saying this is not going to be a ultra competitive list that will win tournaments or anything. This is just something fun that I want to play at FNM's, but still want to make it as competitive as possible against the meta decks and have a fighting chance.

I will first explain the deck a bit and then I will talk about the problems I need help resolving.

List here: https://moxfield.com/decks/9yPZQmdfjE-kXbuImT4-yQ

This deck is mainly a combo deck involving Myr Retriever loops to achieve one of the combos listed below, with the backup plan of being a midrange value deck with the boss creature Sab-Sunen, Luxa embodied beating my opponents to death. This deck plays a full playset of Heartless Summoning, but it also plays 3 x Sibsig Ceremony as a similar effect to Heartless Summoning. Playing both of these enchantments does cause the deck to have some hefty deckbuilding restrictions for creatures, as X/1's would instantly die under Heartless, and creatures would require either a good ETB effect or some other way to circumvent the effect of Sibsig.

Here are the combos that are possible with this deck, with a Heartless Summoning or Sibsig Ceremony on the battlefield:

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Altar of the Brood = infinite mill

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Dredger's Insight = infinite life

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Scrap Trawler + Marketback Walker = infinite draw

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Scrap Trawler + Mishra's Bauble = infinite draw on opponent's upkeep

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Spymaster's Vault = Infinite death triggers. If you have any creature on the battlefield, you can connive it using Spymaster's Vault and loot almost your entire deck (I usually leave 3-5 cards left in the deck in case my opponent responds with removal, or to have a backup plan in case I can't kill them this turn). After drawing your entire deck, you can find Altar of the Brood to mill them, or you can attack with your giant creature if they have no blockers (Sab-Sunen is a great creature to do this with). If you have extra mana and cards after conniving, you can also use a discard spell to first make sure the coast is clear before playing Altar of the Brood.

Also:

-2 x Myr Retrievers + Sibsig = infinite zombies

-1 x Myr Retriever + 1 x Scrap Trawler + Sibsig = For every mana you have, you create 2 zombies

Much of deck consists of spells that dig for Myr Retriever, or Heartless/Sibsig:

-Traverse the Ulvenwald - delirium is fairly easy to accomplish in this deck. Can search for any creature or even Spymaster's Vault in some situations.

-Thundertrap Trainer - can dig for Heartless/Sibsig, or Traverse. If we already have Heartless/Sibsig in play, then the offspring ability can be played as well for a reasonable amount of mana to dig 8 cards deep.

-Kiora, the Rising Tide - has a loot effect stapled on it, and can make an octopus if opponent does not kill it.

-Dredger's Insight - Digs for a creature. Is a combo piece for the Myr Retriever loops.

-Overlord of the Balemurk - Digs for a creature, and can rebuy a previously dead creature from graveyard.

-Marketback Walker - Acts like a cantrip if you have Heartless/Sibsig out. If you have multiples of this card and/or Myr Retriever in hand, then it may make sense to play multiple copies of Heartless + Sibsig as it would allow it to draw multiple cards.

Some of the other cards have good utility as well and some of the creatures are silver bullets that are searchable using Traverse:

-Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied - This card can generate good card advantage if your opponent does not have a way to kill it. It can still attack every turn as well if you add counters to it using Spymaster's vault. Usually 2 swings and your opponent would be dead. Obviously though it is susceptible to Solitude and other exile/bounce effects. I try to play it after confirming the coast is clear using discard effects.

-Deceit - This card can remove any permanent if you use both of its modes, to bounce the problem permanent to your opponent's hand, and then discard it. This card can also act as an searchable Thoughtseize via Traverse.

-Tishana's Tidebinder - This card can counter some of the "one shot" graveyard removal effects, or some of the hate permanents for our deck. For example: Tormod's Crpyt, Nihil Spellbomb, Relic of Progenitus, Vexing Bauble, Chalice of the Void.

-Witherbloom Charm - Another card that can destroy hate permanents such as High Noon, Rest in Peace etc. If there is nothing to destroy, you can sac a useless land or creature in play to draw 2 cards to dig deeper for your combo. Also, occasionally it makes sense to play 2 x Heartless Summoning on the field (usually due to hands with multiple Marketback Walkers). The charm allows you to sac one of the Heartless so your X/2 creatures can live again.

From the sideboard:

-Abrupt Decay - this can be used to kill hate permanents, while still having utility against creatures or other things.

-Drown in the Loch - One card that can be devastating to the deck is Surgical Extraction, so Drown in the Loch is there to counter that, and also act as removal/counterspell in other situations. If they exiled our graveyard or disrupted our combo, then this card can help us with our midrange plan as we play a more normal game.

Now obviously, this is a very fragile combo and many cards in modern can disrupt it. Any graveyard hate, enchantment hate, or just plain counterspells can disrupt the combo. That is why the deck does play discard spells to clear the way, and also have a backup midrange plan. Hands that don't have Heartless/Sibsig, or hands that have too many copies are also not ideal. This is why there are the loot effects from Kiora, Rising Tide, or Spymaster's Vault to try and mitigate this. Also, Marketback Walker and Scrap Trawler also makes it so multiple copies of Heartless/Sibsig are not useless. Scrap Trawler can replace 1 of the Myr Retrievers in some of the loops if you have 2x Heartless or 1x Heartless + 1x Sibsig. Marketback Walker gets better with multiple copies of Heartless/Sibsig.

I am fairly happy with the maindeck list, but the sideboard plan does require some help as I need some help with the following matchups. Since the decklist is so tight with so many cards being a core part of the combo, there is actually not too many cards that can be cut from the maindeck. My current plan for sideboard is actually going to 65 cards and adding an extra swamp in there. Yes this dilutes the combo a bit, but it also allows me to play multiple copies of cards that answer my opponent's hate cards. Otherwise, there is just no room to bring in multiple cards without cutting key cards from the deck. My answers to my opponent's hate cards from the sideboard are Abrupt Decay, Tishana's Tidebinder, Drown in the Loch, and Foundation Breaker.

1) Aggro decks. This deck's mana is fairly clunky as it has 3 colors, and I do have to shock myself a lot using shocklands. I have considered the following cards but I am not quite sure if it is the answer I am looking for:

-Force of Despair - I don't quite have enough black cards to use this, and I have to be lucky for it to destroy 2 or more creatures.

-The Meathook Massacre - This card does act as a combo piece for the Myr Retriever loop after it is on the battlefield, but it is a bit slow, as usually I need to use it as X=2 to kill everything.

-Damnation or other sweeper effects - Again, it is a bit slow as it usually cost 4 or more mana, or are 3 mana but have other costs (e.g Toxic Deluge, Bontu's last reckoning)

-Grey Merchant of Asphodel - the black devotion isn't always there, so it may only gain an average of 3 life.

-Fatal Push - This is the best answer I have come up with for now, but I am looking for something better if it exists.

Ideally, if there is a creature that can help with the aggro matchup that would be ideal, as it can be searchable using Traverse/Dredger's Insight/Overlord. Currently I am testing Harvester of Misery, but the earliest it can come into play is turn 3. Also, red based aggro decks can side in Blood Moon which is hard for me to stop.

2) Tron/Eldrazi Tron decks - This deck almost has no way to deal with the tronlands/Eldrazi lands, so the only thing I can do in the matchup is side in my Consigns. But they have many problem cards - such as Karn, which grab a lot of hate cards from their sideboard, Kozilek's command to remove our grave, and Ugin, Eye of the Storms to exile the Heartless/Sibsig. Also, it is hard for my deck to deal with Trinisphere effectively. I have to rely on Deceit and Foundation Breaker to destroy it.

3) Other combo decks - This deck I feel is a bit slower against the other combo decks, and they can disrupt this deck far easier than I can disrupt them. I do side in some combination of Tishana's Tidebinder, Drown in the Loch, Consign. Some of the matchups I have difficulty with are:

Blue belcher - they have a lot of counterspells to disrupt my combo, and can side in Harbringer of the Seas which I have to respect.

Esper Goryo's - I have limited ways to stop their Goryo's Vengeance. Also, they usually side in Surgical Extraction. A resolved Psychic Frogs can eat their graveyard and make my Drown in the Lochs useless.

Storm - Again, I have limited ways to stop their combo besides Tishana's Tidebinder countering their Ral, Monsoon Mage's ultimate, or Abrupt Decay to destroy their mana reducer. I do side in Drown in the Loch as a counterspell in this matchup.

Amulet titan - Less relevant now that the deck was affected by the banlist, but their maindeck Boseijus and Urza's Saga fetching Vexing Bauble is difficult for me to deal with.

Anyways, these are my thoughts on the deck and the problem matchups with the deck. I understand that some of these issues may not be solvable and are just part of the problems with playing this deck. However, any advice would be appreciated.

One last note: I did look at AspiringSpike's Heartless Summoning list, but I don't think Acererak the Archlich would fit in this list with Myr Retrievers.

Getting Started Fun Matchups

A friend and I wanted to dabble in higher powered magic. Our plan was to proxy a few modern decks to play against each other.

We figured the decks that are in the meta were probably pretty strong, but we don't really know anything about the modern metagame. Which decks would make a fun "battle box" of decks?

I'm especially interested in Boros Energy. Is there a deck that's a fun matchup against Boros Energy? Ideally they'd have relatively even chances against each other.

I'm also curious about "boomer jund" lol. Has jund completely fallen out of the meta?

This idea probably sucks...

Like the title says this is probably a pipe dream but here goes my stupid question anyway.

Is there anything there with the great goblin orcish bowmasters and warren soultrader?

Maybe an orzhov blink deck with phelia and ephemerate or a grixis force draw gameplan with cephalid coliseum and burning inquiry?

Card Discussion Question re: Mishra’s Bauble and Fatal Push

Hey there, have found this sub very helpful as a returning player.

Need some clarification re: Mishra’s Bauble and Fatal Push synergy.

For reference, this is a question for Modern in a 1v1 scenario.

Let’s say during MY turn I’ve:

- Played Mishra’s Bauble but DO NOT tap it.
- Then I end my turn.
- Then it’s my opponents turn and when I have priority I tap Mishra’s Bauble.
- Then they cast a creature with converted mana cost of 4 or less.
- Then when I have priority, I use Fatal Push in response to that creature.

Does that sequence of events trigger Revolt on Fatal Push? Since Mishra’s Bauble is a permanent and left during “this turn” - (this meaning the opponent’s turn).

Resulting in me being able to destroy their creature immediately (assuming they have no counters and let all resolve)?

Thanks again, everyone. I really appreciate the guidance.

Returning Player Big creature mono black?

Hi, I've been slowly trying to get back into MTG for the past few years and decided EDH isn't really for me anymore. When I was last active in the game this format was apparently called "extended" and it was my favourite constructed format so I figure it's a good place to start

I'd like to try and build a mono black large creature deck but not really sure where to start. I would be willing to do B/R if this isn't really feasible. And yes I know I could just run mono green or some form of tron to play big creatures, but I'd really like to try and make this work.

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated! I also don't mind netdecking lol

Card Discussion Question re: Bloodstained Mire and Priority

Hey there, getting back into Magic after a 20-year break. Need some clarification re: Bloodstained Mire and its utility/playability.

For reference, this is a question for Modern in a 1v1 scenario.

Let’s say I have an UNTAPPED Bloodstained Mire on the battlefield (it is my only land) and a Lightning Bolt in my hand.

Then I pass to the opponent.

During THEIR turn, can I:

- Tap my Bloodstained Mire, pull a mountain per the card text, put it on the battlefield, and THEN tap my mountain to cast Lightning Bolt?

If I can do that, WHEN on their turn do I NOT have priority to execute that play?

Asking because if this is legal it helps me wrap my head around creature removal or direct damage if we are at final killing blow levels of health.

Thanks so much, all.

Modern Twitch Fit Deck I Made (Inspired by ThrabenU)

Hey guys! I was watching ThrabenU play some Eyetwitch Nic Fit in legacy the other day and got inspired to make a version in modern. Obviously the deck is missing many pieces in the transition of formats, and I am aware the deck won't be very competitively viable. However, there are some neat tricks I put in the deck and I took it for a whirl in MODO. Deck was very fun and pretty resilient, with all the learn shenanigans being very interactive and exciting to use. Had a blast so I thought I'd share here. Open to suggestions for improvements!

Vent I just feel like I am losing my time and money.

Hey everyone, I wanted to vent and probably ask what is your point of view when it comes to losing a lot games.

I have been losing a lot of my local modern tourneys that is held every week at my LGS. I regularly place bottom 4 and it is starting to hurt.

I cant help to feel that I am losing money and time, especially when the entry fee for the local tourney is above what you receive for being bottom 4. For example, I get a single booster pack which is probably only half the price of the entry fee. I cant help feel that I am bleeding money because I could have easily bought a pack for less than that.

I understand that I should not feel that way but I cant help it. I am happy for those who can make it to the top and they deserve more prize for being great in the game. I understand that they might be a few that will say to suck it up and get better but I am being realistic, how long can I keep this up.

Yes, some may say that I might get lucky with that single pack and crack something good but it not a common occurrence.

How do you guys adjust or better yourself when it comes to this ? Do you guys ever feel like this and just call it quits coz it is not worth wasting money.

I am currently playing colourless eldrazi tron and some will probably say that it is not great to play that deck in the current meta as there are others more consistent decks and stable wincons. I do understand that but I can only play with the cards I am dealt with(I bought this fully build deck because it is probably half the cost of the top meta decks now)

Adding salt to injury : I had recently placed bottom 4 in my RCQ in a different format, which was standard and I was playing a meta deck too. Jeskai Revelations deck.

Any advise it most welcome =)

Could I get some feedback on a combo brew I made?

It's a Dimir control shell with the Time Sieve + Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry infinite combo. The goal is basically to assemble the combo, get infinite turns, and then win with Wan Shi Tong, Librarian. Tezzeret the Seeker can tutor up the artifacts as well as hate pieces from the sideboard, and the 3 Break The Ice in the sideboard are for an excess of eldrazi and domain in my meta.

4 Time Sieve

4 Thopter Foundry

4 Sword of the Meek

4 Counterspell

4 Fatal Push

4 Thoughtseize

2 Spell Snare

1 Sink into Stupor // Soporific Springs

3 Wan Shi Tong, Librarian

2 Subtlety

2 Force of Negation

4 Island

2 Swamp

4 Polluted Delta

4 Watery Grave

3 Undercity Sewers

2 Tezzeret the Seeker

1 Harbinger of the Seas

2 Consign to Memory

2 Flooded Strand

1 Bloodstained Mire

1 Otawara, Soaring City

//Sideboard

2 Mystical Dispute

1 Ghost Vacuum

2 Consign to Memory

3 Break the Ice

1 Harbinger of the Seas

1 Grafdigger's Cage

1 Tormod's Crypt

1 Engineered Explosives

1 Void Mirror

1 Sheoldred's Edict

1 Cling to Dust

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Deck Discussion Coming back after a few years, trying to decide between Colorless Tron or G Tron

I played the original Tron back before covid and loved it. When Karn Great Creator was added still loved it but once Covid hit I took a pretty long break.

Getting back into modern now, and I see Tron has some pretty drastic changes from the older days. My main question are what are some of the positives and negatives of each?

It seems like green Tron and Mycospawn give you some better high end ramp potential and just another strong thing to do on 4 mana instead of Fleshraker, which requires some support after playing it. However, the colorless builds seem to have some extra reach in the end game because of Fleshraker and don't need to spend as many cards on color fixing. So just wanted to see the deeper nuances of each build.

Card Discussion Is there any alternatives to "Mox Opal"?

Hello everyone, I know that maybe I'm not the first one to have this idea but I would like to hear other people apart from those at my LGS.

Basically I'm starting to like modern, mainly I like artifact and I watched some videos about the izzet affinity decktech. Since I don't know if I will like the format that much up to the point of buying the four copies of the mox opal, I was wondering if anyone knows an alternative for them.

Yes I know that the deck mainly revolves around it to also produce on the field a "kappa cannoneer" on turn 1, but I would like to try it without spending too much. I was thinking about substituting it with "springleaf drum" or the "mox tantalite", to ensure a kappa t2 or t3. What are your thoughts on this? I want also to point out, I don't want to "absolutely win every single match" but I would like to make a deck that could do something without beign overwhelmed by the classic meta decks.

Thank you everyone in advance!

P.S: sorry for the poor choice of my words or other grammatical/spelling mistakes, since english isn't my main lenguage and I'm learning it very slowly!

Which cards and decks to keep?

Hi there again!

Some time ago I posted a question if it's fine to be playing just one deck and specialise in it, rather than switching between several decks. Well…this has changed a bit and got a bit out of hand lol.

My current problem is that I might have accumulated a bit too many cards to choose from, while not having that much time to play, i.e. attending LGS only once a week, which makes it feel that I am hoarding and not necessarily collecting with purpose.

So, there are couple routes that I see:

  1. Pick archetypes to have cards available for twicking and updating from time to time, while trading in or selling certain decks/pieces, or

  2. Keep all the cards in the collection, with a risk of never seeing of them being played (although, I do lend cards to other players sometimes, which feels nice.)

Here's a brief list of decks that I am able to build in no particular order:

  • Boros Energy
  • Jund Midrange
  • Jund Saga
  • Golgari Rock / Mono Black Rock
  • White Soul Sisters (lmao)
  • Gruul Midrange
  • Domain Zoo (no Quantum Riddler)
  • Orzhov Blink (Ketramose)
  • Selesnya / Abzan Birthing Ritual
  • GR / GB Broodscale Combo
  • Mono Red Belcher
  • Mono Red Midrange
  • Jund Cosmogoyf Combo
  • Rakdos Midrange
  • Hollow One
  • Rakdos / Jund Shadow
  • Enchantress
  • Mono White / Boros Land destruction

As you can see, I am a blue hater (I just can't afford it).

I think partially I am afraid of the deck going obsolete after a ban or the moment WotC prints something broken [again.] Hence a piece in me enjoys having a big storage of cards for deckbuilding. But it also feel like a mindless hoarding at times due to not actively using most of them, the thought of which I don't enjoy, although it may be an issue of perspective.

So, my question is: what is your strategy in picking decks you want to commit to and how many of them do you have? When do you know that "it's time to let go and move on?" Also, how do you maintain them and your collection in general?

All this can definitely be prychological, and I might not even have a problem at all. But I feel like a healthy discussion and sharing different perspective can become helpful along the way.

Cheers!!

Deck Discussion Abzan Nostalgia Blink

While considering building a Mardu Blink as a second deck, my heart suggested I should do worse than that. First, the decklist:

(Remember, that's meant to be a FNM-level deck.)

Creatures (27)

4 Orcish Bowmasters
4 Overlord of the Balemurk
4 Solitude
4 Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
3 Skirmish Rhino
2 Renegade Rallier
2 Endurance
2 Witch Enchanter
1 Eternal Witness
1 Boggart Trawler

Sorcery/Instant (14)

4 Thoughtseize
4 Fatal Push
2 Ephemerate
2 Prismatic Ending
1 Assassin's Trophy 1 Eladamri's Call

Lands (19)

3 Windswept Heath
3 Marsh Flats
3 Verdant Catacombs
2 Swamp
1 Boseiju, Who Endures
1 Forest
1 Godless Shrine
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Plains
1 Shadowy Backstreet
1 Temple Garden
1 Underground Mortuary

Second, the "I don't think they need an explanation":

[Orcish Bowmaster], [Overlord of Balemurk], [Solitude], [Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd], [Thoughtseize], [Fatal Push], [Ephemerate], [Prismatic Ending], lands.

Third, the abzan stuff :
[[Skirmish Rhino ]] -> Siege Rhino's baby. A solid 3/4 trample, draining for 2 on etb. It can be pitched for endurance/solitude

[[Renegade Rallier]] -> Fodder to both Solitude and Endurance. He will get back a fetch, a bowmaster or a Phelia everytime we blink it. We can also play him T3 after using a fetch to "ramp", getting back the fetch we've used.

[[Endurance]] -> Main deck free answer to GY-based decks

[[Assassin's trophy]] over other MV1-2 removal to have a MD answer to big PWs vs Tron

[Eternal Witness] -> Recursion, especially with Ephemerate

[Eladamri's Call]] can grab instant-speed a Solitude or an Endurance, or it can be pitched for them

Why not an Esper deck ? Honestly, no budget for Quantum Riddler.

Why not a Mardu deck ? Actually, that's my first choice and it tooks nothing but lands to build the abzan version too. The green cards are not expensive like Riddler.

Why not a meta deck ? I have no time to play competitive. I just want to have fun (or deny fun with Boros Wildfire) at FNM.

Do you have any suggestions, or do you know a list that actually won something?
