Doing everything right and still getting taken out

You can ride perfectly and still get hit by someone staring at their phone. Watch your mirrors and always leave yourself an escape path. Stay safe out there.

The car driver doesn't even press the brake pedal after he hit him, reaction time was a disaster.

I always wonder what's going on inside the brains of people like this. They must be mentally deficient to be that slow and clueless but somehow they make it to adulthood.

Phone

141

u/sephron_tanully 14h ago

I wonder if they ever forbid access to phones at all while driving. Would be kinda neat. Only possible to directly connect it to onboard systems and hefty fines if it isnt.

120

u/snuggie44 14h ago

Texting and taking on a phone while driving is forbidden - people do it anyway. Why would banning access to phones altogether make a difference?

38

u/TheConnectionist 14h ago

It would be effective if they dramatically increased the penalties with a mandatory minimum prison sentence and increased enforcement. A fine - the predominate current penalty - is insufficient to enforce any behavior.

Nobody would be on their phones while driving if they knew it was a 1 year mandatory minimum prison sentence and it was enforced by randomly placed cameras (Not advocating for such a steep penalty or invasive enforcement mechanism, just making a point).

19

u/Virtual-Macaroon-880 8h ago

People get 4-5 dui before anybody starts panicking and if they murder somebody they only get 5 years. Because negligent murder is somehow less scary than having a specific reason to do it

8

u/zorbat5 14h ago

Here in the Netherlands the fines are very hight. Doesn't work. 70% of young drivers have their phone in hand. I always wondered why cars don't have a slid in the drivers seat door where the driver has to put their phone in otherwise they can't drive the car.

13

u/madness_of_the_order 13h ago

Because you are only allowed to own one phone shaped thing

It's because monetary fines don't work, we're generally too wealthy here. I believe a driving ban for 6 months or more would be a better deterrent. I also wouldn't mind if they'd increase the fine from €440,- to something much, much higher.

9

u/MauriceEscargot 11h ago

There are too many people who keep driving with a driving ban or their license taken entirely. Actually having to spend your own free time to do community service sounds like it might work better.

4

u/shaju- 12h ago

Driving ban would yield instant results I think, even if for 1-3 months

5

u/Luuk341 12h ago

I am in favour of immediately having an attempted manslaughter charge slapped on to whoever uses a phone whilst driving. No ifs, buts, or maybe's. Go try to convince a judge that you DIDNT risk the lives and property of everyone around you when you took out your phone.

Also enforce, by law, that car manufacturers CANNOT display any text messages, or whatsapp, or slack, or teams, or ANY other non verbal communicatiob messages on ANY screen. I was sitting next to a friend in their new car and all their text messages just popped up on the screen CONSTANTLY.

While I share the sentiment, one has to consider that there are cops out there that will see (ok, everyone can make a mistake I guess) AND WRITE UP (wtf?!?!?) a ticket for holding your phone in your right hand even though you don’t have a right hand.

I mean, the lady was lucky(?) for not having a right hand. Imagine if she had, how do you fight that ticket. And then, the fine I suddenly prison!?!?

2

u/Jt07132829 7h ago

Yeah we should encourage more monitoring and control. Just put flock cameras in our houses and cars. Give them control to see our phones connected. Teaching kids to be good and building culture where people give a f about others is too much and a job for the government.

2

u/Iamonreddit V-Strom 650 9h ago

Prison is such an expensive and silly idea. There are loads of cheaper alternatives that are much less likely to create more hardened criminals.

Litter picking and similar community service is an obvious option. House arrest with ankle bracelets would also be very disruptive to normal life. Pair that with a requirement to grant access to personal devices for monitoring as is done with sex offenders and you can restrict their use of their devices at times of day or to certain services/apps/websites under penalty of greater punishment.

Filling up prisons with relatively minor offences is just foolish vindictiveness that will create greater problems than it solves.

Why it surprises me I don’t know, but seeing a driver in a newer model vehicle holding the phone near their head and carrying on a conversation through the speaker, when you know the car has Bluetooth capabilities. But they believe because they’re using the speaker and not holding it to their ear, it’s “hands free”

2

u/XxNitr0xX '09 GSXR 750/'05 YZ250/'04 Raptor 660r 5h ago

Because they could and should be made inoperable by GPS speed with optional bicycling modes, etc. that only allow the functions of Spotify and emergency services.

Both in Australia and New Zealand it is illegal to have your phone in your hand at any time while driving. Still people get caught and fined everyday even when hands free tech is like as low as $19. Modern EV’s now have 26inch centre screens that you must use to control all manner of car function while taking your eyes off the road. Only saving grace there is most EV’s have radar based autonomous braking that should have seen the bike and stopped?

In Denmark you get a hefty fine and a clip in your driving license (you have 3 clips).

You cant deny phones at all in a car. So the passengers not allowed to be on their phones? What if you see an emergency and have to call an ambulance or police. And i could go on and on.

Its already illegal so lets leave it at that.

It's currently $1,295 and 4/12 demerit points in Queensland, Australia, to have your phone touching any part of your body. Still doesn't deter everyone, there's simply not enough police around to guarantee you'll be caught

4

u/andthensilencefell 11h ago

Yeah I’m sure the new cars with an iPad console are much less distracting.

3

u/PolliverPerks 11h ago

Onboard systems are just as distracting in modern cars imo. We just need heavier fines and those fines need to be enforced more strictly. I see people driving while watching stuff on their phone constantly and i get so mad about it

2

u/hazeyAnimal 10h ago

I see people scrolling Instagram and having video phone calls.

The fundamental reason here is that they are simply addicted.

They physically cannot put their phone away to focus on operating a 1000kg+ machine that can travel well over 100kph.

When I learnt to drive, my father told me that driving is like a job, and you have to focus on your job while working and nothing else, or you'll make mistakes.

Phones are so problematic that even crossing a road on foot as a pedestrian is dangerous.

I lost track of how many times I see an approaching car going steadily at a rate only for them to slow down near me... but not enough to come to a halt. Then I see it. The fucking truth right through their door window. Captain jerk-o is on his/her phone.

Here I am doing all the tier 5 velocity calculations. Accounting for time variance based on vehicle model. Adjusting calculations with position of the sun. Rolling a pair of dice. Arranging the poseable arms of my He-Man action figure to align with the cloud patterns. The math is solid. Getting ready to cross and beat both ways of traffic.

It only took one moron being on their phone to upset it all.

I doubt they saw the pedestrians in the median trying to cross. the biker did and stopped. they didn't and kept going. I don't think people look far enough out to see whats coming.

2

u/LowRelief1272 4h ago

They don't need to see the pedestrian... Just the big red break lights on the vechile Infront of them.

3

u/Consistent-Shoe-9602 8h ago

They just weren't looking at the road. If it wasn't for the bike they would have plowed through the pedestrian instead.

2

u/Wild-Snow5705 12h ago

Happened to me as well, got hit while slowing down before huge speed bump by Vespa guy. And as always — „I haven't seen you“. I was on my way to workshop, so mechanic just added another bill...

2

u/shotnine 11h ago

The brake lights are on until the driver steps out of the car though?

2

u/redbullah 11h ago

there is no reaction time. i'm dead sure that the driver was texting on his phone. this is the new norm of driving you know.

2

u/Retax7 8h ago

They just don't give a fuck. Both as a car driver and as a pedestrian i've seen over and over again: one car brakes on the sidewalk, and the car behind speeds on the left/right. Thankfully, most pedestrian reflexes are good enough to get out of the cars way.

2

u/Animalus-Dogeimal 8h ago

Fair to assume that nothing is going through the brains of people like this

2

u/welrope 6h ago

Nothing. Nothings going on.

2

u/EarthConservation 2h ago

I'm always so confused when people say the driver didn't press the brake pedal when the brake lights are clearly visible in the video... You can see them on as the car enters the frame and turn off when the driver goes into park. How else would the car have stopped?

Obviously he hit the brakes right before the car enters the frame and runs into the biker, but he did press them. Probably after glancing up from their phone.

2

u/gainer1001 1h ago

I've thought of this before. We know people that are have terrible reflexes, coordination, and perception. They are the ones that can't play sports or do anything that requires co-ordination. Yet, they drive among us

People here drive like maniacs, eventhough it is relatively less congested and less populated than the rest of Istanbul. I always tell this to people when they want to start riding motorbikes in Istanbul;

Most people in Istanbul that are in trafic know how to operate their respective vehicles(Bus, Truck, Car, Motorbike...). However, almost nobody knows the rules of the trafic. Its basically everyone driving and riding with little to no regard for rules of the trafic...

Sorry this happened. Hope you and the bike recover. Freaking idiot driver.

I ride in the PH, where zebra crossings are basically optional. I’ve had close calls stopping for pedestrians and almost getting rear-ended — in a car.

On a bike the risk is worse.

If I have to slow or stop at a crossing now, I take the side of the lane, not the middle, and I check mirrors before I’m fully committed. Rear-end likelihood is higher than people think.

You can do the legal/right thing and still need an escape path.

3

I had this happen in Istanbul. Literally stopped at a red traffic light (in a car fortunately) and guy behind me just slammed into me. He then had the balls to have a go at me saying WHY DID YOU STOP! Pedestrian crossings and red lights seem to be for decoration.

2

u/Mister_Brevity 6h ago

Happened to me on a Grom. Guy behind was watching tik tok on his phone and I was stopped in front of him. I had front brake on nice and tight and he heard another lane go and just…. Hit the gas without looking up. Broke my bike in half under me - the front brake held, the frame snapped under the seat and pushed up. It was like getting kicked in the balls by god - but after he stopped and I’m standing in the middle of the street with my several-inches-shorter from under me I was like…. That’s it? I got a bruised “under carriage (not recommended!)” and a destroyed bike but I didn’t even fall.

2

u/Twisterpa 2h ago

After 15 years of riding and one of the most important facts I realized is to ride permanently on the lines of the road.

  1. People aren't used to seeing the liminality of it. They see me on the line more because it is a transitory space. Whether they "like it or not" they see me more.

  2. It is just far safer. You are closer to cars technically. However, you essentially isolate the events that can realistically happen to you and YOU are in the mirror of the car near the line you are currently on.

Cars do not set their mirrors properly and bikes are invisible in the center of the lane from both sides.

  1. This never happens, or rarely does if you're on the line. The most common type of accident is this type of accident and fuck that.

This is a big reason for me that riding is not really reasonable.  It’s not just you that must never make a mistake, it’s that you have to trust every single other driver to not fuck up or you could easily die or be injured permanently.

rule #1 of riding, never trust any driver out there NEVER, sometimes you have to do what is considered illegal to be safer, because the legal way can kill you. In this case, moving over to the right shoulder and watching the side miror, can give you enough space to escape, worst case it's the pedestrian who get hit (but if I see it coming and not stoping im screaming RUN!!!)

Smartphone usage while driving should have a high penalty.

For the driver, I'd avise to not stop in the center of the lane, trying to give some space for a car to squeeze through if necessary.
When you brake for traffic lights, stop signs, etc., try to look in the mirror and figure out what is happening.

Note: These are mitigating measures. Unfortunately, they'll never keep you 100% out of the way of these assholes that don't care for what they're doing on the road.
Drive safe.

1

u/padalmaker_bcn 13h ago

Initially it looked like the pedestrian crossing the street shot at him

1

u/wolfox360 13h ago

Then next time who travels in Chaotic city; When you stop, do it on the center line. For the guy of the post, Thank you for your sacrifice! hope everything ended well.

u/2oonhed 13h ago

My freind was riding his brand new GSR 1000 aroun San Rafael and a woman hit the back of the bike....*but not him".
He said he was just sitting there, first in line at red light, and then all of the sudden the bike shot out from under him and went into the intersection. He was left standing there, in shock, but completely unharmed.
Lady in a car did not stop for the red light in time.
The bike was in the shop for months.

I thought he got shot

1

u/Warm_Sky_9735 12h ago

I am 100% sure that the car drivers first answer was "You shouldn't stop there" second one was "You stopped so suddenly"

1

u/Arzoru 12h ago

A cabify did this to me, of course he was looking his phone

1

u/ShoddySpace5680 12h ago

Im always watching my mirrors for this reason.

1

u/AlxR25 12h ago

I think a driving license should be harder to get than it is. Not everyone has to drive a car, that's why public transport exists. Many fuckass idiots on the road not paying attention.

1

u/TowelScary 12h ago

Why i thought that the biker got shot by the pedestrian?

1

u/PsyFyi-er1 12h ago

Similar hit on me. My fault was stopping for the red light. 1 year after and still have lower back pain. 🥲

1

u/dreamdaddy123 12h ago

Has there always been people on phones or is it an increase? I drive with these kinds of idiots.

1

u/Late-Button-6559 12h ago

Licence gone forever. And personally paying for all expenses of the victim, even if it makes the guilty person homeless.

1

u/AbaddonR 12h ago

I think i still carry the trauma from my own accident. Watching this literally felt like it hurt me. Cant watch these videos. 😢

1

u/thejourneybegins42 12h ago

I would not be stopping in the middle for reasons such as that. This is a part of riding defensively. Act like everyone wants to kill you.

1

u/nightstick308 12h ago

I am also a frequent top box user. The first thing I noticed is how the top box slammed into his back, but then also prevented him from flying back into the offending car and instead caused him to end up on the side of the road. Is that better or worse? Would it be better overall if there was a backrest/cushion on the box?

On one hand it’s refreshing to see how everyone stopped and came to you. On the other hand I genuinely feel like some people shouldn’t ever touch a car. When I started driving I was very aware of the fact that I have a deadly weapon under my control and that I should always be careful and mindful of what’s happening around me. Seems like some people don’t share that notion

50 dkp minus to the white car

1

u/ThisWeeksHuman 11h ago

That's why I prefer using my bike recreationally on roads with winding curves and little traffic. I avoid cities as much as I can, even with a car. The amount of poor drivers is insane. And there are so many extremely aggressive drivers too! Running red lights, honking if you don't go at least a bit over the speed limit, honking and trying to run you off the road if you drive defensively and watch out for pedestrians is commonplace. In Hamburg Germany and as you may imagine city populations are often less well.. civilized and have poor cultural manners. Maybe it's the anonymity or the stress of so many people in one place or maybe cities attract people with more aggressive mentalities

u/tmax202020 11h ago

If brake check a couple of times 20 meters before the zebra crossing

1

u/Jaded-Breath3462 11h ago

If he's French which i think he may be, the driver will get out and shrug his shoulders as if it is the riders fault.

1

u/Hotshot_UCG 11h ago

Shhht at first I thought the pedestrian shot him...

thats what im paranoid the most when driving my bike, but its also the one thing i cant really influence. i generally drive pretty passive, but you really cant do anything about the person behind you.

1

u/Capital-Plan-1563 11h ago

This has happened to me here in Greece twice, once with a car and one with another motorcycle, so now if and if I have to stop for pedestrians I always check the mirrors because some people are braindead when driving or riding.

That gave me PTSD I’ve been hit by 5 cars in the past. I don’t know how im still alive.

1

u/DarkNafs83 10h ago

Almost got taken out twice on my motorbike like this along with the pedestrians trying to cross the road. Unfortunately when there is a car behind me I dont stop anymore to allow pedestrians to cross unless they are in the middle of the road because of my experience. Greece btw

1

u/I_SHIT_IN_A_BAG 10h ago

I know you are supposed to brake for pedestrians to pass but if you are in a motorcycle, it would be safer for you to keep going. its not his fault that he got rear ended but I would have kept driving instead of stopping here. it just looks like you are stopping out of nowhere.

1

u/eKID-1 10h ago

This is why im never driving a motorbike

1

u/Wuz314159 10h ago

As a bicyclist, we have a saying: Graveyards are full of cyclists who were in the right.

I got 2 broken ribs and 11 stitches for going straight through a green light. r/fuckcars

1

u/Hunter_sapien 10h ago

Only thing I could say (in hindsight) is to keep an eye on that mirror instead of glancing

1

u/gco0307 10h ago

Happened to me 5 years ago.

Stopped at a roadworks red light and struck from behind by a car that had hardly slowed, if at all.

Spent 3 weeks in hospital with a year rehabbing my leg (badly broken) and a while longer building body/mental strength.

Driver was distracted and admitted at the scene although did give 2 different reasons, and in the end neither held up in court

1

u/RickLyon 10h ago

mf was on his phone.

1

u/Numerous-Fig-1732 10h ago

It happened to me too, the crash was so hard it bended the frame and the bike was garbage. I was sent flying but my ankles where hooked by the handlebar so I remained on the bike. A couple of week and I was on my feet again, very lucky.

1

u/Antrimbloke 10h ago

Shouldnt have slowed down for the ped, many countries in europe/asia its not mandatory. Still a pisser though. Happened to me at a junction a few years ago on a brand new bike, being careful pulling out, people just assume you are going.

u/Quattordicesima 9h ago

I saw someone on the highway lose their wheel cover and get a flat tire today on a tir

They were on the phone and did not even notice

1

u/live4daV 9h ago

Wow, thats insane. People hate being aware of their surroundings. Hope the biker is okay

1

u/koredom 9h ago

Yalova, TR?

1

u/toss_me_good 9h ago

Yup, that's why I stopped riding. Took advanced riding courses, wore solid gear, always looked in my rear view when stopping. Still had a 82 year old driver cross double yellow without signaling and make a left in front of me. At least advanced riding courses taught me I didn't have time to stop. Ditched the bike as it smacked into the car. ended up with multiple broken bones, two surgeries, a year of PT, etc. But because of the gear no road rash, saved knees from knee guards, saved fingers from enforced gloves, saved ankles from full boots. Insurance also paid out for all the gear at full original price. Really smart purchase if you ever use it insurance pays you back.  The gear was wrecked. Did its job but ended up having to put aside a lot of my other hobbies and athletic fitness. Motorcycles are though in cities

1

u/bugra101 9h ago

That’s in Turkey. Where pedestrian crossings means absolute fuck all.

Feel sorry for the biker and anyone who regularly rides there.

1

u/gaschligan 9h ago

Looks more like attempted murder 😱😵

1

u/RigamortisRooster 9h ago

Those crosswalks need fixing. Ive had seen experience, the walker does make eye contact and just walks across. Seen some standing not paying attention to cross as i get closer with my brake covered, then last second they go.

Needs a buuton the walker presses and put some bright lights in the pavement to illuminate the path
