My parents actually did buy me a motorcycle at age 7. It was a 50cc or something like that. The only thing I remember is eating shit and never wanting to touch it again.

This sub loves bummer/fear posts and then when the inevitable "guys I'm quitting riding it's just too scary" post arrives it's no surprise. We have to show how much fun this hobby is.
49
u/ItsMangel 9h ago
How many hours did you spend in the parking lot before you rode on the street? How do you get your bike to the parking lot? I rode down to the end of my street today and had to get help turning the bike around to get home because i got scared. How do I get my bike up/down my slightly downhill/uphill driveway? How do I turn my bike around in the driveway so I can get it out?
Etc etc etc. It's almost terrifying how incompetent some people are.
13
u/voodoohotdog 8h ago
I sometimes wonder if a lot of of it is just attention seeking behaviour. They know it’s a stupid question, they just want someone to pay attention to them.

But by now I've realised that a lot of bikers, especially from the US, are just mind numbingly incompetent.

I do think there is bias due to the nature of this sub.
The people just starting out are the ones who post the most.
Ive been riding since 1987 at 3 years old. You wont see me asking any of these stupid questions, but i occasionally ask a pointed question about bikes here.
It is kinda the same everywhere you go. The snowboarding forum is full of "is this a good board" (posts picture of 40 year old bosrd that was garbage when it was new). "How do I go feom beginner to intermediate? (Post video of beginner still learning basics).
The people just starting out are the ones who come to the sub and ask the most questions. Although, I just wish they would use the search feature first for most of these questions.

The answer for most questions on here is 'take a proper course'.

I always thought that on the internet at least, it was lonely people looking to have someone pay them attention. But the more people I meet, and realize how fucking clueless they are about everything, I’ve changed my thinking to that the world is really stuffed with dumb people.

11
u/Countant5 8h ago
Anything more powerful than a Grom should be illegal to ride on the street until you have at least 10 years of experience. At that point you should be allowed to get an SV650. The first five years of experience should consist solely of parking lot drills.
It isn’t even fun to ride fast bikes anyways.
4
u/shadowseer7930 5h ago
Even 400 CC's is too powerful for a first bike, are you crazy? Get a 50 cc moped and ride that for at least three years!
1
u/OldManAbides333 5h ago
Same thing in the choppers sub. Every week there is some idiot asking if they should get a chopper for their first bike.

"Is it safe to leave it/ride it in the rain?"
No, it's not safe, bikes were never designed to be exposed at all to water, at the first second of contact with a drizzle of rain your bike is going to transform into a pile of rust.
6
u/frodeem '23 Triumph Tiger 1200, '03 Moto Guzzi V11 8h ago
Yeah this one is so stupid. Like what do you think will happen to bikes in the rain? Folks who don’t ride seem to ask this all the time.
8
u/SlashNreap 6h ago
Exactly. In fact I actually advocate to willingly ride in the rain once in a while, it's a useful skill. Yeah, riding in the rain is more dangerous, yes it's not comfortable, but avoiding these conditions altogether is arguably way more dangerous if you don't have the skill to face it.

2
u/SpinkickFolly SV1000 4h ago
I'm just passing through but I remember posting here when this sub only had 3000 subscribers.
Things don't change. A hobby sub reddit is generally going to be new people to the hobby rather than seasoned veterans. There is not that much to talk about topic wise and it's not like an old school forum where users have years to form relationships with each other.
You need to follow good YouTubers if you want some deeper insight on any hobby nowadays.
1
u/Kudosnotkang 4h ago
Yeah I’ve barely been on this sub but in the days of forums before social media and even in person meetups and message boards in the time before before - people always asked these questions . Like you say they’re just the new person topics .
My personal favourite is countersteer, far more important for a newbie to get their head round than worrying about chicken strips in my opinion .

"I'd rather just see posts of people's bikes"
This is for you OP. 2019 Springfield Dark Horse and a 1997 CBR1100XX (Blackbird, I must have a thing for black bikes, obviously) I've been riding for over 50 years and never put my bike down (other in a stopped position. Once, kickstand wasn't fully down, other time, foot was poorly positioned on a gravely surface). I always wear a helmet unless its cold, then I also wear a leather jacket, unless its REALLY cold, then I add a leather pants with the jacket. I understand and accept the risk I take and the potential outcome and this is still my choice. I also accept that those that promote ATGATT are probably better riders than me as they probably have more experience pushing their bikes. With that, there is likely times they were pushing beyond their limits and have put their bike down and adopted going with ATGATT. Thats fine. That's their choice. Just as anyone not wearing ATGATT, that's their choice. Just enjoy your ride. Focus on you and your surroundings. Don't ride beyond your skill level, even if trying to keep up with your friends. And yes, I even wave to sport bikers (because technically, im not a "Harley guy" and I came from sport bikes)

Did you expect maybe car talk? Or we could talk about first time home ownership, a motorcycle sub seems like the right place to talk about that.
2
u/tpasco1995 2003 Honda ST1300 ABS 3h ago
I think it's the repetitive nature of it.
"What helmet should I get" doesn't change week to week. It doesn't need three posts a day.
"Is a Hayabusa a good starter bike I got $30,000 from inheritance" is overasked.
Genuinely, this sub feels more like Yahoo Answers than any other I've been in

u/MourningWallaby GL1500 SE 9h ago
what do you expect? It's not like people who are busy riding and working on bikes have a reason to come here unless they have a question or concern. and nobody who doesn't know you cares enough about your bike if you just share pictures of it.
this is how every sub that is focused on a niche is. r/martialarts Is the same way and the mod there crashed out about it thinking it would be a place for dedicated experts to share insight and information. but come on, pros are doing that in their own channels, not reddit.
the reality is if you want to share a cool thing related to motorcycles, there's better, bigger subs to do that where more people will appreciate a cool thing. if you have a dumb question about a motorcycle, this is where motorcycle people can be found.
1
u/Vicious00 9h ago

90% of this sub is either brand new riders or people who don't ride at all. Their entire understanding of motorcycling is based on sensationalized TikTok videos so they form very strong ideas over a bunch of shit they have no understanding of.
Large, broad subreddits often suck like this and you're much better to just go into the smaller subs like r/CalamariRaceTeam or even subs dedicated to specific bikes. Like I've owned 20+ bikes over 20 years of riding but I get downvoted my a bunch of noobs for even mentioning I like my Harley so I just don't bother posting here much lol.

That’s holier than thou? I think it’s called not wanting people to think all bikers are that dumb.

I know this is a joke but I feel clever so let me have it: re the helmet I have a bike lock on the back of my tail bar and I lock my helmet to the bike. Won’t work for all makes of helmet or all weather but works well for me.

Don't worry about who doesn't wave and what they ride. I ride a Harley and I wave at freakin' scooters, really cool bicycles and classic cars. Our bikes don't define who we are unless we let them. I could make the same claim about sport bike & adv tour riders, but it doesn't matter to me.
There are also plenty of valid and perfectly reasonable times when waving doesn't make sense. 1. You're leaning into a deep curve. 2. You're paying attention to what's going on directly on front of you. 3. You simply didn't notice the other rider until it's yoo late to wave because you're lost in the strange peace of the ride you're on. 4. You're tired of waving every few seconds.

Don’t forget the photo shoots with their bike in a T-shirt and all the old guys yelling at them that they should buy gear
