Mod Post Please be cautious of participating in surveys of trans people

1.4k Upvotes

Hey all,

The mod team wants to remind you to please be cautious of participating with research teams and surveys that are studying trans people.

Another trans subreddit offered the following statement to their subscribers:

"Lisa Littman, a transphobic researcher who invented the concept of "rapid-onset gender dysphoria", recently asked our moderation team for permission to post about a study she's working on with Kenneth Zucker and J. Michael Bailey. We said no." The moderators went on to offer contact information in the case of this survey popping up.

There are numerous organizations attempting to study trans people right now with dubious intent. It's important that you remember to verify the source of the studies, related organizations, and the names of the lead researchers before moving forward with any of these. It's very easy for a research group to manipulate data to get the results they want.

As a reminder, however, we do allow some surveys on this subreddit, but we require all surveyors to be screened by our moderation team first. If you feel that a survey is here without being screened first, please report the post AND message our moderator team so we can take a look.

Thank you!

Discussion "how are you trans you listen to System of a Down" was a real sentence a real human spoke at me last night.

I was offended at first but didn't say anything I thought they were criticizing/gatekeeping my transness not criticizing my tastes, but then as it just sat w me I started laughing at how ridiculous it sounded. Is there a secret list of music you can't listen to and be trans? What did they mean by that? But then it popped in my head again this morning and like I don't feel any of their songs are problematic? I don't follow any of the members on social media, are they outspoken transphobes on social media? Things don't usually stay rent free in my head people have said far worse straightforward things to me that roll off my back idk why this is sticking w me 😭

Relationships Dating as a trans woman is so much better than as a man

To preface this, I am a lesbian.

Don’t get me wrong they’re absolutely still some of the same issues like compatibility or people who can’t maintain a conversation. But overall, my dating experience has been extremely positive.

As a man on dating apps, that shit used to be bone dry I was literally swiping right on everyone and hoping someone matched me. Even then, the women I matched with were usually very hesitant to open up even after weeks of talking, which led to very few dates.

Now as a trans woman, the dating apps I use are bumping I feel like I have the opportunity to be picky and not have to swipe right on every single person. I went from maybe getting a match once every week to two weeks as a man to getting multiple matches every day as a trans woman.

Not just the matching, but the conversations tend to be better. It feels like the women I match with are more open/honest with me about their goals, feelings, and expectations with dating. The craziest part in my mind was that planning a date went from something that might happen after a week to something that could happen within a few hours of matching/talking and I have actually been going out on dates more often.

The only issue is that sometimes some women do not fully read my profile and see that I am trans so I always make sure I send them a message stating that I am trans and making sure they are OK with that before planning a date. Other than that, I’ve been having a wonderful experience. Also having a beautiful woman flirt with you is fucking awesome. I have never blushed this much in my life.

Trigger Warning Almost died last night Spoiler

So I got body contouring yesterday. Surgery seems like it went off without a hitch, and I have hips and a great butt now. I know it’s too early to tell what the final results will be but I’m really happy with the outcome.

I started bleeding from one of the back incisions, but the surgery team assured me that was normal. However, when I got up off my stomach to go to bed, I noticed one of the front drain sites was soaked through, and there was a big bubble of blood under the adhesive.

My husband went to help me change it and put fresh gauze on it, but when we peeled the bandage off, blood started squirting out fast in an arc. We got pressure on it right away, but then noticed my other drain site was oozing blood. I was losing a lot of blood. Husband called 911, meanwhile I was shaking, dizzy and nauseous, going cold but drenched in sweat, mouth went dry, vision started going black. Felt like I was this close šŸ‘Œ from losing consciousness.

Ambulance got there really fast. Paramedics took over, got me on a gurney and loaded in the ambulance, managed to stop the bleeding but I was doing bad. Got rushed to the hospital where they did a great job getting me stable. They’re gonna keep me here another day now.

I had to ride in an ambulance right after I got home from bottom surgery too, in so much pain I passed out. So, I’m 0 for 2 on not needing emergency services after surgery.

I feel like hell, but I still don’t regret getting this surgery. I have hips now, that’s so worth it for me. But, damn was I ever scared for a while.

Edit:

Okay everyone, followup, just got discharged. I did not in fact almost die, despite a cup of blood colored fluid shooting from my abdomen in a jet followed by dizziness and vision going dark. Apparently there is a fluid that the surgical team puts inside you to do the liposuction, not all of which ends up getting removed, and which works its way out of you slowly. Or, in some cases, quickly! I weighed myself just now, and I’m actually 5lbs heavier, so there’s a lot of fluid still in me! What I experienced was that fluid bursting out through a drain site, followed by a vasovagal response due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. It felt like I was dying, the paramedics were extremely concerned, the ER staff were concerned, it took the plastic surgery team coming in to actually explain what was going on. So, good news overall! Bad news: this might happen again lol.

Good News Update on Cis Male Friend liking me (MTF/Trans Woman)

CONTEXT/FIRST POST HERE!!

Sooooooooo :) first off, I appreciate all the cute stories in the replies and the sweet ones being supportivešŸ’˜ y’all helped me be more confident with this situation :) thank you all!

but ANYWAYS the date went well.. i think VERY well. He took me to this steak house place :) it was very nice and cozy in there tbh. I wore the cutest outfit I could find, Dark red dress and some heels. He was honestly soooooo handsome like he reminded me of Tom Welling back in the 2000s 🄹 I complimented him and he was flustered :) ssooooooo adorable omg!!! Well fast forward to what happened. We talked about a bunch of stuff, memories, college, or work. I was going to bring up the yk elephant in the room (elephant being the fact that I like him so much) I was ready tbh, I even practiced back home lol. But then, he brought it up. Not the fact that I like him but the fact that he likes me. So me being awkward, I probably look weird like I didn’t know what to do but stare😭 like this is literally the moment I’ve been waiting for but I got mental blocked🄲 however me on the inside was freaking out. He got scared and apologized, saying he should’ve not said that but ofc I had to stop him from that, I told him that I liked him too :) like for a looooooong time now (well I didn’t say that part but ykwim) We both have like laughter like an awkward one but hey at least me and him both know that nowšŸ„¹šŸ’˜ Fast forward again, we got done and he drove me home and kissed me on the cheek hehe :)

maybe he did ask to stay the night… and maybe I said yes… and maybe he’s snuggled up next to me as i’m typing this… just maybe who knows ā˜ļøšŸ¤“

Anyways :) I wanna keep updating you all so I’ll do my best to update asap <33

Link I Created the First Ever Timeline for Legal Gender Recognition in the US. Our Rights Go Back Much Further Than You’d Think.

Trans people’s right to legal gender recognition is much older than we realize—older than abortion rights, Alaska’s statehood, and the Civil Rights Act. That history just became common knowledge.

Euphoria I officially shrank!

I've always been 5'8". I got that measurement when I was 17 and got my license, I've measured myself many times since then, and when I started transitioning at 39, that was still my height. When I was still identifying as a guy, it was... Ok. I was a little below average but not in short king territory. It would have been nice to be a little taller, maybe, for dating apps, but whatever.

When I started transitioning, it was also ok. I was a little taller than average for a woman but I have cis girl friends who are taller so I didn't really stand out. I could live with that!

I just had my first annual physical since before I started transitioning (... And also since I had a pediatrician don't judge me, I'm only 41 that wasn't that long ago...) And... I'm 5'7". Officially, I'm 1.702 meters, which is actually just a hair under 5'7"!

It's not a huge difference, but it brings me into the average range for women and I'm so happy!

Advice Question Was told to throw out my E after 28 days

Been under the influence for a decade and never had this happen before. Went to the pharmacy to refill my script for 3 months worth of E like i've done a thousand times before, but this time the girlie who gave me my prescription told me to throw it out within 28 days of initial use and that was also written in sharpie on the bag for my script. Same script and same E i've been on for a decade so absolutely ignoring it, but anyone else had this happen recently?

Funny What are the chances...

...the woman working the Walgreens pharmacy drive-thru in blue scrubs knows what progesterone is? šŸ˜‚

Sitting here waiting for mine and I suddenly can't stop thinking about that meme:

ā€œNobody’s gonna know.ā€
ā€œThey’re gonna know.ā€
ā€œHow would they know?ā€
ā€œThey’re gonna know.ā€
ā€œHow would they know?!ā€

Because now my brain is going:

She knows.
She absolutely knows.
...but how would she know?! šŸ˜‚

And the much funnier question:

Does she give even the faintest shit why I’m picking it up?

EDIT: Oh dear God.

The woman disappeared and the male pharmacist in the white lab coat with a voice approximately three octaves below sea level came over to the intercom:

ā€œDo you have any questions about your prescription?ā€

Sir.

I have several, but absolutely none of them are about the progesterone. šŸ’€

At this point the meme has become documentary footage:

ā€œThey’re gonna know.ā€
ā€œHow would they know?ā€
THE PHARMACIST HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.

Sex talk No bottom dysphoria?

I'm probably dwelling too much on comparison and imposter feelings, but I didn't have any conscious dysphoria pre-crack, and now I mostly have an issue with extra body hair and lack of head hair. I wanted to say that as a preface for my question, because I am a late bloomer and my story doesn't seem to share much with other trans women.

Does anyone else not have bottom dysphoria? I don't seemq to have any at the moment, and don't have a problem with topping my wife. (I hope I'm correctly using that term.)

I've heard people say most trans women don't even want people to bother with their equipment for sex.

I guess, I'm just worried about not being trans enough.

Edit: fixed some typos

Today I Learned So apparently Estrogen speeds up nicotine metabolism (CYP2A6)

Hello there! I am 1 month into my hormone journey (I am injecting Estradiol Undecylate) and early on I started feeling like my uni classes were dragging way more than usual, in a kind of irritable way between breaks. Took me a while to connect it, but turns out there's a real mechanism behind it, estrogen upregulates CYP2A6, the liver enzyme responsible for breaking nicotine down into cotinine. Higher estrogen = faster nicotine clearance = your levels drop quicker than before, even if you're vaping/smoking the exact same amount as pre-HRT.

This is apparently well established outside of trans health research, it's the same reason pregnant people and people on hormonal birth control often report needing to smoke more often or have a harder time quitting.

I searched years of nicotine-related posts on here and it's almost entirely about the clotting/VTE risk (which is real and important, please still take that seriously, I am just not in a good enough position rn to quit) but nobody's really talking about this metabolism angle, even though it's the thing you actually feel day to day. Wanted to put it out there in case anyone else has been confused about why their nicotine habits feel different since starting E.

Not a doctor, just found this in the pharmacology literature and wanted to connect the dots for anyone else experiencing it. (source: PMID 17646279, Higashi et al. 2007, Drug Metab Dispos)

Dysphoria (Warning, very harsh) I have a large ribcage circumstance of 46', I weight around 300lbs.

• Upvotes

I've been looking everywhere, but it doesn't matter, my back/ribcage is huge... It's not like I have a lot of body fat getting in the way of my measurements... I am not left with a lot of body fat that I can scoop and put into the bra... I hate these proportions, and I am hoping losing weight will bring down the circumstance at the very least to around 40', but I am not that hopeful, I also haven't started HRT, so maybe there is some room.. but I am built like an endomorph, and I don't know what I will do, I don't want to be some big back freak when I lose my weight.

Trans and Thriving Anyone else’s mind different after HRT?

Good evening all. Been on HRT for over 5 years. Anyone shocked the differences in how the brain works now after being on it so long? I process information so differently now and have all the other feelings.

I have been shocked to see how different I am now compared to before. Loving the changes.

For my young girls, remember, this journey is a marathon not a sprint. Give the meds time to work.

Good News Finally deleted Twitter šŸ™

Feels a little silly putting this as a ā€œGood Newsā€ flair because in the grand scheme of things, this is pretty mundane, but whatever, this is big for me!

If there’s one habit I have that I could point out as being obviously detrimental to my mental well being, it would be my Twitter usage. I’ve used the app for years and years as a way to keep up with musicians I love, find new stuff to listen to every week, and talk to people about lesser known stuff that my irl friends aren’t into.

Apps been awful ever since The Evil One bought it though. My account wasn’t big by any stretch of the word, but even in the 3 months I’ve been openly trans online I’ve encountered some of the nastiest, most hateful shit on Twitter. Whether it be directed at me in the comment section of some random music post, or something I just saw while scrolling my feed, I’ve had enough exposure to TERFs and right-wing shitheads for a lifetime.

Should’ve done this a while ago but better late than never. Finally taking the steps to healing and self acceptance.

Venting Mom

My mom is very supportive and so are all of my family members, I just can’t stand when she talks to me about how things are going so far. I don’t mind that as a whole but she keeps saying things like ā€œit isn’t going to change you much from what it hasā€ and ā€œI mean people will always be able to sort of tell that you were a boyā€ and I just can’t stand it it’s so annoying and demotivating like, it makes me worried that people WILL always be able to tell and that things won’t change much more. Idk it just sucks

Discussion if you have darkness around the philtrum area where hair used to be post-laser, try niacinamide

i did 2 years of laser and hair wasn't growing on my upper lip anymore, but there was always something still off about it. it seemed to be a slightly darker shade of color no matter what. well it turns out i had hyperpigmentation or melasma there and it was giving the illusion of an unclean shave or laser result

after about 2 months of using niacinamide on the area, this issue has completely resolved

it turns out that estrogen tends to cause hyperpigmentation around this area in cis women too, especially high or fluctuating levels and i've seen/read about a lot of cases where laser doesn't resolve the issue, but no hairs are visible to remove. sometimes this will mean they are still deep in there and need electrolysis but sometimes it is just melasma or pigment. in addition, shaving can cause post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation there and many of us have shaved that area of skin our whole lives

if u think this could be a struggle for u try it out, i use a 10% niacinamide serum. if that isn't enough, u can double down by adding a vitamin c serum

Trigger Warning So, my father has disowned me for being trans, but still wants to use me

TW: A slur and some misgendering by an abusive parent

Basically, my father finally decided to get a smartphone, and he wants a printed copy of all his contacts. I had done this twice, but basically, we stopped talking after I came out in January last year. He basically sent me three messages, one insulting me more than the other, and threatened to kill me (my little brother has recordings).

Without me around, my little brother was tasked to produce this contact list. But he couldn't do it. After 3 days of trying on his own, my brother called me for help. Now, I don't wanna help this asshole, but I also didn't want my brother to get screamed at for not being able to print the damn contacts list.

For 2 hours, I tried everything. But as it turns out, using the Nokia Ovi Suite in 2026 is kinda challenging on modern hardware, and the USB passthrough in a VM wouldn't work either.

As I was venting about how I feel bad for helping my father, he basically confessed to me that my father had actually told him to "give that faggot a call, what do we have him for?" At that point my blood was boiling. So the mf misgenders me and throws slurs at me, yet also wants my help? At that point I said that he can fuck off, my brother apologized for even calling me (which he didn't need to do), and the call was over.

This man has thrown nothing but slurs at me for a year and a half, even when he needs my help. And, while I was the one with the orchiectomy, he had no balls to reach out to me and forced my brother to do so. Smh
