I grew up poor in the Appalachians and even there I was made fun of due to my K-Mart clothes (think Parton's "Coat of many colors").
I pushed through after living abroad for years, met my wife, realized her potential and pushed her to become an executive in a huge health care system.
My family suffered for years but my folks decided to start a business that all us kids had to sacrifice for, but it really worked out.
Now I just do what I can and try not to worry about shit. So many terrible jobs in the interim.
This will sound weird but hear me out: I spent some time in a zen temple in Japan and honestly did not get it at 20 years old. Just didn't make sense to me at all.
The other day I realized what the hell I was doing and why I shouldn't worry about things beyond my control.
I'm over 30 years older and it's weird it finally hit me. Zen isn't really a religion as much as a philosophy.
It literally took me 30 years to figure out that you can't figure it out.
Are you attempting to engineer a bitter lonely future?
Because driving away the people who love you is a really amazing start on that project.
But you do you … and that attitude suggests that everyone [else] would be better off that way. As an excellent TV show (almost utopian) once asked, "wouldn't that be for the best?".
